This is finally Simone and Asmodeus' story, and I have to confess — I never saw him coming 😤 I thought I knew what to expect from Asmodeus. I was wrong. So wonderfully, deliciously wrong. All I will say is: my little fairy 🧚♂️ swoon 😮💨
Liana captivated me from the very first page — as she always does — with that effortless writing style that makes you forget you are even reading ✨ The banter is sharp, the sass is constant, the dirty talk will make you put your phone face down for a second, and her humour is woven through everything in a way that just makes you fall even harder for her characters 😭🩷

Was so curious to know what exactly happened to Simone after her disappearance in previous books. So, I was excited about this one.
Asmodeus was not what I expected! I expected an archdemon that was harsh, brutal, and punishing. He was manipulative and calculative, yes, maybe a little... and mischievous and seductive.
' “Az!” Simone screams, arching against me.
“That’s right,” I say, my voice like gravel. “Let all of Hell hear you’re mine, little fairy.”' (Ch 18)
One would think that eventually, perhaps, Simone had a little bit of Stockholm Syndrome mixed in. However, it was really hard to tell because Az was exactly what she needed after her traumatic history! His patience and consideration seemed unerringly unending, especially since time was flying by so quickly, and yet he acted like he had all the time in the world for her. Rather, disturbingly endearing.
"....Because the most sensual acts cannot compare to the rush I get from watching you tuck a strand of hair behind your ear.” (Ch 11)
I was kind of dreading the inevitable moment where Simone finds out who/what Az really is. I was kind of hoping (unrealistically) that she’d never find out. 😅 I was kind of feeling anxious for Az.
The reunion had me giggling. I know I've said it in prior reviews in this series, but I absolutely adore when the past characters come back in.
This was so good! I love the softer tone, though the spice still sizzles like an inferno!

Absolutely SAT for Asmodeus! If I were to get Stockholm Syndrome from anyone, I would want it to be from this man. Demon. Archdemon. Archdemon of Lust.
Y'all know I can't help but to fall for a winged demon MMC and Az was all that and a bag of chips.
Usually, I'm not a fan of large time gaps in books but this one worked! All the time that Az and Simone spent together over the years just brought them even closer and I am weak for a centuries old MMC who has never loved anyone but falls for her 😍 (and their child even though he alraedy has hundreds 🤣).
I love the interconnection of the characters in this series so much!

I devoured this like I was starving! As always Liana pulls you in right from the start and thats it you’re hooked.

Getting to catch up with characters from the other books was great but seeing our two main characters grow and change with/for each other had me beyond invested.

Another great one in this series!
I really enjoyed finally getting Asmodeus’ and Simone’s story! This whole series and world is so entertaining and I especially liked the Easter egg reference’s to both the author and one of her other books at a couple points. I love where the overall storyline is leading and am very much looking forward to the next one!

I have offically found a new book boyfriend Asmodeous is the complete package. I absolutely loved this read between Asmodeous and Simone's push and pull to the world building being so well written that it feels like your actually there. This book captivated me from the first page and held me captive until the last. If you enjoy fallen angels, archdemons, and a slow burn thats worth the wait then this is for you. I highly recommend! I got this via BookSprout and this is my voluntary review.

Although this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. The story is heavily focused on Simone and Asmodeus, and the important events involving previous characters are naturally explained along the way.
Simone, a young French woman, is preparing to leave her abusive and jealous husband to raise her baby away from him. But tragedy strikes when he catches her and violently pushes her down a staircase, causing her to lose the child.
Years later, while working as an au pair in St. Louis, Simone is suddenly transported to Purgatory alongside several other people. There, she discovers they all carry either angelic or demonic blood and are being trained to control supernatural threats that endanger Earth.
During a mission in Hell, Simone catches the attention of Asmodeus, the Archdemon of Lust.
When she becomes lost and poisoned, he rescues her… only to keep her hidden away in a cave. Yet his captivity is far from cruel. He visits regularly, bringing her beautiful dresses, fine food, jewelry, and companionship. More importantly, he offers patience.
Simone has been deeply wounded by the men in her life and does not trust easily. But Asmodeus keeps showing up. He plays cards with her, remembers the smallest details, and slowly earns her confidence.
Meanwhile, the feared ruler of Hell finds himself neglecting his kingdom. Parties no longer interest him. Neither do the pleasures he once thrived on. Instead, he would rather spend his time with Simone in the manor he builds for her.

What I loved most about this book was the care Asmodeus shows Simone. Despite being immensely powerful, he never forces, pressures, or rushes her. He understands her trauma and allows her to heal at her own pace, even when it means denying his own desires.
And considering who he is, that's saying something.
There is plenty of spice in this story, including demons and supernatural seduction, but it feels consistent with both the setting and the plot.
More importantly, beneath all the heat lies a relationship built on respect, patience, and trust. Ironically, this Archdemon often shows far more kindness and understanding than many of the men Simone encountered on Earth.
✨ A captivating paranormal romance filled with healing, devotion, spice, and a surprisingly tender love story.
🌶️ Plenty of spice.

Il comprend ses traumatismes et l'accompagne avec beaucoup de patience sur le chemin de la guérison, même lorsque cela signifie mettre ses propres désirs de côté.
Et pour l'archidémon de la Luxure, c'est un véritable exploit !
Le roman contient beaucoup de scènes épicées, avec démons, succubes, incubes et tout ce que l'on peut attendre d'une histoire se déroulant en Enfer. Pourtant, derrière cette dimension sensuelle se cache une relation fondée sur le respect, la confiance et la patience.
Et finalement, cet archidémon se montre bien plus attentionné que nombre des hommes que Simone a rencontrés sur Terre.
✨ Une romance paranormale addictive, pleine d'émotions, de guérison, de passion et de tendresse.

First thoughts:
Although this is listed as the third book for the series I didn’t feel like I was missing out on other storylines. I have read the prequel and book 1 but there’s a few novellas sprinkled in so there’s actually 8 books ahead of this one. So a lot has happened before or even simultaneously of Az and Simone’s story.
Things I loved:
- The tears I wept at beginning for Simone and again for both Az and Simone later on. Not to give anything away but if you have any triggers regarding miscarriages or pregnancy and childbirth complications/distress then please read this with awareness to your mental health and wellbeing. But I can say from my own experience of loss it was written with grace and respect.
- It’s a love story through and through. Trials and tribulations are a fact of all relationships and the way theirs started certainly had its ups and downs. As Simone said “What in the Stockholm Syndrome is this fuckery?” 🤭🫣
- The pacing and character development. The warped time was enjoyable

- There wasn’t really an arc that was pivotal to the story. Not that I didn’t enjoy the love story that was Az & Simone. I know that they’re part of the bigger picture this series is telling I was just surprised that other than what came out about Az was pretty much the arc.

First thoughts:
Although this is listed as the third book for the series I didn’t feel like I was missing out on other storylines. I have read the prequel and book 1 but there’s a few novellas sprinkled in so there’s actually 8 books ahead of this one. So a lot has happened before or even simultaneously of Az and Simone’s story.
Things I loved:
- The tears I wept at beginning for Simone and again for both Az and Simone later on. Not to give anything away but if you have any triggers regarding miscarriages or pregnancy and childbirth complications/distress then please read this with awareness to your mental health and wellbeing. But I can say from my own experience of loss it was written with grace and respect.
- It’s a love story through and through. Trials and tribulations are a fact of all relationships and the way theirs started certainly had its ups and downs. As Simone said “What in the Stockholm Syndrome is this fuckery?” 🤭🫣
- The pacing and character development. The warped time was enjoyable

The River of Woe was an amazing read that I devoured like mad 🩶 It was so descriptive and well written, and the tension and emotions really pull you in to Asmodeus and Simone’s story! The back and forth banter and trust building between them was enjoyable, sweet, and amusing, and their personalities bounced off each other very well 🤍 Their relationship formed at a nice pace, and it was also neat getting to find out what was happening with Simone from what we knew from the other books! I of course loved getting to see characters from those other books too 😌
Simone is a strong and admirable character, and her story was both heartbreaking and absolutely heartwarming 🤍 I really loved seeing her come out of her shell with Asmodeus, and her trust in him was slowly and rewardingly earned! It gave me all of the emotions watching her become more bold, confident, and just more herself 🥹 When she started to feel comfortable with Asmodeus it felt meaningful, which it definitely was. Her character interested me from the first book, so it was really cool getting to find out what was going on with her all this time!! I loved how she had a feistiness to her despite what she’s been through, and I looooooved that part to her even more once that started to show more when she became more forward 🥵 She has quite the fiery side to her underneath that sweetness! I loved her character and story, her thoughts had me giggling, and seeing her finally get to be happy and have what she wants was overwhelmingly emotional in the best way 🩶
Asmodeus is deliciously spicy and so, so, sweet, thoughtful, and caring 😍 He has a major soft spot for Simone, and the lengths he was willing to go to in order to earn her trust and just simply make her feel comfortable pulled majorly on my heartstrings 🤍 His personality and interactions with Naamah, Sariel, and Ashtaroth were entertaining and had me laughing, and it was particularly amusing when they were teasing him a bit! I liked seeing the different sides to him and him navigating his own new and growing feelings for Simone. The side of him that was softer and more sensitive with her, and the side of him that was still powerful and commanding made a nice contrast in his character! And yet Simone has a certain power over him, and he cares on a very deep level for her, always making sure she’s comfortable, even helping her start to come into her own, which led to some very spicy times 😏This man has everything (and sooo much more 🤭) you could possibly want! Asmodeus is a huge green flag wrapped up in irresistible yummy spiciness 🩶
This was a really great read that had an emotional, heartwarming, and spicy plot that will definitely keep you invested 🤍 Asmodeus and Simone have funny, spicy, and intimate banter, and seeing them get closer, Simone learning to trust him, is super heartwarming 🥹 It fills in Simone’s side of things from book one and the others too which I liked a lot, and all the characters in this series are some of my favorite characters, and I really enjoy getting to see them throughout the books—This was another amazing book in The Rivers of Hell series!! 🤍

After escaping her abusive ex and living in Purgatory, Simone is kidnapped while patrolling and cannot escape the grip of a demon named Az—Asmodeus, who is so obsessed with her. She wants to escape, but it is impossible, she does not know where she is and Az cannot let her go. the way he treats her and the attention Az gives her during her captivity eventually soften her, or perhaps they soften each other, because she even makes Asmodeus, an archdemon of lust, feel something he has never felt for anyone before: love and devotion for Simone.
The dynamic between Asmodeus and Simone is interesting...and filled with an unexpected depth of connection. perhaps being captive for so long in the same place with only Az as a companion given Simone a better understanding of him. Simone finally sees the true Az as more than just the demon who kidnapped her🥰
Overall I enjoyed this book🥰 I know going into a Liana Valerian book will be worth it✨ It's entertaining and like all the previous books, this one is low stakes, easy to follow and to read as a standalone, but reading the previous books is highly recommended for a more enjoyable reading experience!😆 For fans of demon romance, this series is a must-read!✨

I received an advance copy of this book prior to publication. This review reflects my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book, although I could definitely tell I jumped into an established world. This is book three in the series, and while I’ve read the novella The Veil of Obsidian (book 2.5), I still felt like I was missing some background information and character history. The story is still easy enough to follow, but I think readers who start from the beginning will get even more out of it.
Despite the darker premise, the romance is more of a slow burn than I expected, which actually worked well for the plot. The story grabbed my attention quickly and kept the momentum going throughout.
One of my favorite aspects was getting Az’s POV. I always enjoy dual POV in dark romance because it adds so much depth, and seeing his internal struggle made his character far more interesting than if we had only experienced him through Simone’s eyes. Watching an ancient, feared archdemon slowly realize that he’s capable of love and vulnerability was surprisingly satisfying.
Simone is equally compelling, although in a very different way. My heart broke for her from the beginning. She constantly compares herself to others and convinces herself that she isn't enough, and her lack of confidence is impossible to miss. Over the course of the story, she grows emotionally and starts recognizing her own worth, which I really appreciated.
The only thing I found myself missing was some of her physical development. Early on she learns new skills and becomes more capable—especially with knife throwing—but as the romance progresses, those abilities seem to fade into the background. Instead, she settles into a much more domestic role, reading books, designing and sewing clothes. While that reflects where she finds comfort and safety, I would have loved to see her continue embracing both sides of herself.
I can already imagine this being a divisive book for some readers. Simone eventually realizes that she was genuinely happy with Az despite the fact that he kidnapped and imprisoned her for years, and I suspect some readers will interpret that as Stockholm syndrome. Personally, I saw it more as a trauma-informed exploration of healing, dependency, and slowly reclaiming parts of herself she had buried. As the story progresses, she not only gains confidence and begins to recognize her own worth, but also becomes more comfortable with her desires and embraces a side of herself she had long suppressed. Whether that emotional and intimate journey works will probably depend on the individual reader.
Overall, this was an engaging dark fantasy romance with strong character development, an emotionally satisfying dual POV, and a relationship that grows in unexpected ways. It left me wanting to go back and read the earlier books to fill in the pieces I feel like I missed.

Who would think I would fall for the ‘deity of carnal sin, scourge of virgins and corrupter of saints’, but I sure did! I absolutely love the River of Hell series and was so excited to read Asmodeus and Simone’s story. I wasn’t expecting the fierce Archdemon of Lust to turn out to be such a romantic, but Simone captured his heart, and her heartbreaking story caught mine.
My synopsis:
Simone’s life has not been easy and after escaping an abusive relationship, her happiness is once again challenged as she is taken to Purgatory to be an elite warrior. Simone vows never to be broken by a man again, but on her first solo patrol, she captures the obsessed attention of the Archdemon, Asmodeus, who is used to taking what he wants, and he wants her. Ladynapping and keeping her locked away in a cave, he does his best to woo her, but Simone doesn’t fall that easily for the man who took her freedom away. As her body begins to give in to his charms and skills, her heart starts to follow but can she forgive him for all he’s done?
My thoughts:
I loved how the ultimate playboy, the Archdemon of Lust, Asmodeus, falls so hard for Simone and tries to win her heart. Simone’s character has lived such a hard life filled with abuse and terrible loss that I just wanted to wrap her in a blanket and keep her safe. Her story hit me right in the heart—and yes, there were tears! The fact that she becomes stronger from her experiences and in the end, has an Archdemon wrapped around her little finger is a testament to her strength and resilience.
With appearances of some of my favorite characters from the other books including Ashtaroth, Lana, Naamah, Kevin and Sariel, it felt like coming home to the Rivers of Hell world. When Santaniel makes an appearance, I knew he had ulterior motives and the Devil did not disappoint—even if we’re still not completely sure what all he’s up to.
This enemies to lovers romance features a morally grey MMC, forced proximity, a soul pack and open door spice, including Shibari. Even though some of the characters are actually ‘related’, the found family trope is a big part of the River of Hell series which is one of the reasons I love it so much and want to be adopted. I adore Liana Valerian’s writing and highly recommend this 5⭐️ read be added to your TBR today!

Simone and Asmodeus finally take center stage, and I have to confess—this story caught me completely off guard in the best way possible. I thought I knew what to expect from Asmodeus, but I was wrong.
Liana Valerian delivers a high-stakes and undeniably addictive read that showcases her talent for building tension and emotional depth on every page.
Diving back into Liana’s world is always an absolute joy. She has an effortless writing style that makes it incredibly easy to forget you are reading and simply get lost in the narrative.
The narrative immediately drew me in, blending witty humor and sharp banter with the dark, seductive atmosphere of Hell and Purgatory. The narrative expertly weaves together moments of witty banter and deeply moving, sorrowful passages that resonate long after you finish reading.
Simone’s journey, which I have been curious about since "The River of Fire," was well worth the wait. Her resilience in the face of past trauma makes her an incredibly strong, compelling lead, and watching her stand her ground against someone as formidable as Asmodeus is what makes this book shine.
Asmodeus is the quintessential archdemon—cruel and possessive—but the vulnerability beneath his armor adds such depth. Watching him transition from a man who couldn't be bothered to remember the names of his children to someone entirely fixated on Simone is a fantastic character arc.
The dynamic between them is intense and addictive, featuring the kind of slow-burn tension and possessive energy that kept me glued to the pages from beginning to end. It is a brilliant exploration of how love can take root even in the deepest sorrow.
Liana Valerian continues to prove she knows how to craft characters that stay with you long after the final page, and I cannot wait for everyone to get their hands on this one.

River of Woe was everything I wanted from a dark paranormal romance. Liana Valerian created a story that immediately pulled me in with its supernatural intrigue, captivating characters, and undeniable chemistry.
The characters were one of the strongest parts of this book. They felt well-developed, layered, and emotionally compelling. I found myself invested in their individual journeys as much as their relationship. Their connection was intense from the start, but what I appreciated most was how the emotional bond developed alongside the attraction, making their romance feel authentic and meaningful.
The paranormal elements added the perfect amount of mystery and darkness to the story. The world-building was immersive without being overwhelming, allowing the romance and character development to remain at the forefront. There was always a sense of tension lingering beneath the surface that kept me eager to see what would happen next.
And the spice? Absolutely delivered. The intimate scenes were passionate, well-written, and enhanced the relationship rather than distracting from the plot. The balance between romance, emotional depth, and steam was executed beautifully.

Liana Valerian has done it again. The River of Woe is dark, devastating, and achingly beautiful — a story that refuses to paint love in neat, uncomplicated colours. Instead, it drags it through grief, trauma, sacrifice, and redemption, emerging with something all the more powerful for it.
What I love most about this series is that Hell never feels like a backdrop. It breathes. It aches. Every river, every shadow, every whispered threat feels steeped in history, and Valerian's worldbuilding continues to be some of the richest I've read.
Asmodeus is terrifying, possessive, frustrating, yet heartbreakingly vulnerable beneath the armour he's spent centuries forging. Watching those cracks widen as his humanity battles with his monstrous nature made him impossible not to love. His relationship is messy, raw, and emotionally charged, built as much on healing as it is on undeniable chemistry. Nothing comes easily, and that's exactly what makes every hard-won moment so satisfying.
Valerian excels at writing damaged characters who don't magically become whole. They stumble, make impossible choices, and they hurt each other as often as they protect one another. That emotional honesty is what elevates this series beyond a typical paranormal / demon romance.
Verdict: Beautifully written, emotionally devastating, and utterly addictive, The River of Woe swept me under from the very first page and didn't let me surface until the end. Dark, tender, and unforgettable, this is another outstanding instalment in one of my favourite series.

As a member of Liana’s Hellions, I have been waiting for this book forever, and I was absolutely thrilled to receive this ARC! Liana Valerian did not disappoint. Simone’s healing journey and the realistic representation of her PTSD were deeply moving and beautifully handled. The spicy scenes were diverse, perfectly executed, and brought the exact right amount of heat. Plus, getting to see appearances from other favorite characters from the previous books was the absolute best—and honestly, Sataniel is an absolute clever genius!
Scenes I Loved:
The Girl's Catch-Up: I absolutely loved the sassy and hilarious scene when Lana and Jessica caught up with Simone, bringing her up to speed on all the things she missed out on while being captive. It literally made me laugh out loud.

We finally got it and it did not dissapoint! Liana had me hooked from the first page again and if it wasn't for adulting I would've inhaled it in one sitting!
In the other books we already find out that Simone comes from a troubled family and a troubled past. In the beginning of this book we find out to what extent and why Simone is so introverted.
Due to her past Simone is reluctant to trust and won’t let any man come close again till a certain Archdemon of lust gets obsessed with her and kidnaps her to make her fall in love with him.
Asmodeus is THE playboy. I mean he is lord and master of lust with a LONG history of all kinds of debauchery so he would be the last person you would except to be able to tear down her walls.
He is used to just taking what he wants hence the kidnapping but he finds Simone less than enthusiastic. She rightfully doesn't trust his motives but Asmodeus surprises us in the best way with his affection, devotion and patience, making her walls come crumbling down eventually.
Their love was sweeter than I expected and I loved every minute of it!
And as usual I LOVED reading about all the familiar characters from the previous books!

I know I say this with each book from the series, but I’m always so excited when a new book comes out. Diving back into this world is always such a joy, not just because of the worldbuilding, but because the characters are just so fun! What can I say, Liana Valerian sure knows how to make Hell and Purgatory very enticing. 😉
I have been curious to know what happened with Simone since reading “The River of Fire”, where she went missing. It was absolutely worth the wait, her character is written so well. I loved how she kept standing up for herself, her past was traumatic but made her so much stronger. The burn between her and Az was wonderfully slow because of her resilience, and I enjoyed that so much!
Az was fun, he never really cared much about the women he slept with and the children he fathered. He has so many of them he can’t remember their names. When he met Simone though, he went completely off-character.
I loved their story, the way their interactions slowly started to become more civil, to friendly, and to more. The growling, possessive alphahole that is Az sure made the story more thrilling and entertaining.
The read was super smooth, fun, and difficult to put down. Liana knows how to write characters that are fun to read and stay with you! 💜

The story spans years, allowing us to watch their relationship develop and evolve. There were moments that were sweet, funny, emotional and incredibly romantic, mixed in with plenty of tension and heat. I loved seeing these two slowly grow closer despite all the obstacles thrown their way.
Now, does Asmodeus go about claiming Simone in the best possible way? Absolutely not 😂 But watching his character growth and redemption journey made it impossible not to fall for him anyway.

At this point, Liana Valerian has perfected her formula for MMCs: it does not matter what this man has done wrong, what questionable decisions he has made, or how many reasons we have to hate him. Somehow, by the end, we are going to fall for him. Asmodeus was absolutely no exception.
The romance and chemistry were easily my favorite parts of this one. I loved watching the relationship develop and getting to see beyond Asmodeus’s cruelty and possessiveness into the more complicated parts of his character. There’s something so satisfying about a character who should be incredibly difficult to love slowly giving you reasons to do exactly that.
But I also really enjoyed the FMC. She felt like a fully developed character in her own right rather than someone who existed solely to redeem or soften the MMC, which made their dynamic that much better.
The story itself was another great addition to the series, and after waiting so long for this book, I’m very happy to have finally gotten Asmodeus’s story. The Rivers of Hell series continues to be such a fun, dark, addictive ride, and I am absolutely still along for it.

Az isn’t just an archdemon, he’s a beautiful, monstrous devotion you never knew you craved until he wraps you in those indigo wings and makes you his! He’s predator and possession, soft-breathed mercy that collapses into terrifying, hot control. When he’s sweet, you believe it with your whole stupid heart, and when he claws you, you forgive him because he makes loving him feel like sin and salvation at once. Simone is the definition of survival, raw and stubbornly alive, and their pull is magnetic, filthy, and absolutely devastating. It reads like venom and satin. If you like monstrous heroes who are tender in private and violent in public, obsessive love that borders on worship, and a story that leaves you emotionally bruised and begging for more, this is pure, uncut obsession. Liana, THANK YOU for letting me be a part of this AMAZING series you are creating! I can’t wait for the next one!

This was such a great read! I loved reading about Simone and Az's story. It was a somewhat slow burn, with lots of chemistry you could feel off of the page! The continuation of the world building and descriptions were fantastic!
Even though Az is a big, scary archdemon, he's nothing but a big teddy bear for Simone, and later Leander. Those two have him wrapped around their fingers! 💕 I love the way he is so gentle and patient with Simone, letting her get comfortable with being touched again. But once she is comfortable, the sparks fly. And holy fires of Hell, do they ignite! 🔥🔥🔥
I love these two, and I think they may be my favourite couple so far. I loved the appearances by the other characters in the series. It was great reading how Simone and Az's timeline coincided with the other characters stories.
This world and series is incredible. Liana did a phenomenal job again. Can't wait for the next book!.

Liana created an incredibly immersive world set in the Underworld, filled with demons, archdemons, fallen angels, cambions, and so much more. I had been eagerly waiting to return to this world, and this book did not disappoint. The world-building was rich and captivating, making it easy to get completely lost in the story.
Simone and Asmodeus’s story was captivating from beginning to end. What starts as a kidnapping slowly develops into a beautiful story of healing, trust, and love. Their chemistry was undeniable, and I loved watching their relationship evolve throughout the book. Also the spice was fantastic.

The witty banter is sharp, entertaining, and impossible not to enjoy. Ms. Liana has crafted a vivid and immersive Underworld, brimming with imaginative details that bring every corner of hell to life. Equally impressive is the depth of the character development, which added so much heart and meaning to the story.
