I’d almost be shocked if this story changed at all before it wound down in a couple of volumes and that’s okay. I think this is here to carry the torch for ‘cute date yuri’ and it does so with aplomb.
The first chapter introduces Minami, a girl Nanoha befriends, which sets Chidori’s hackles on edge because we haven’t seen enough of that particular plot in this series yet.
Except it ends up flipping the script on that trope, which was appreciated. The way that chapter played out was super amusing and Minami, with her ebullient personality and lack of guile, makes more of an impression than any of the other friends. She’s very well suited to the coffee chapter.
However, she does represent the series’ primary means of drumming up comedy - people assuming one thing when something else is meant. It’s gone to this well a ton of times already. Sure, it’s fine, it doesn’t not work, but I sometimes wish this was more than a vibe.
Of course, the vibes are the point and it’s always fun to see Chidori and Nanoha just being very sweet on one another. This has never been the most compelling series, but it’s an enjoyable one.
Chidori’s birthday gets a lot of page time and it’s all about Nanoha being thoughtful and the two of them just being in love. It’s all very fine, yet unremarkable. I did wish they’d called it ‘Flowers Over Boys’ after Nanoha gave her that rose though.
The big change is the end of high school and preparing for the leap to universities and other such things. It makes the two girls work harder to find time together, but since they have to keep their relationship secret most of the time anyway, it’s not a huge difference.
It’s a good series that I won’t return to that often, but has made for a good time. I’m looking forward to the conclusion and want a nice happy ending, but I wouldn’t say I’m super invested.

In the final year of high school, Nanoha and Chidori end up being assigned to separate classrooms. They watch each other from afar and try to spend what time they can together outside school. Nanoha makes a new friend (who is low-key a bit annoying.) Then Nanoha and Chidori celebrate Chidori's birthday with one fun surprise after another until they get stuck in the mountains in the pouring rain. They make the best of it, regardless, and continue to be one of the most adorable couples I have ever read.
I am disappointed I have to wait until October for the next volume to be released!
