About the author

Chie Shinohara (篠原千絵) is an award winning Japanese manga artist best-known for Red River, known in Japan as Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori: Anatolia Story. She has twice received the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo, in 1987 for Yami no Purple Eye and in 2001 for Red River.

Aside from her comics work, she has also written several prose novels. She has published the six volume Big Draw Daughter Hatsu light novel series, as well as five gaiden (or side-story) novels related to her Red River series. All of these were illustrated by Shinohara herself.

My feelings and thoughts on these 3 volumes is very mixed. The things that I liked I really liked and the things I didn’t like I really hated.

The art continues to be a series highlight. Some of the panels in here are absolutely gorgeous and I can’t put into words just how breathtaking they are.

Unfortunately I have to put spoilers in here so I can talk about the highs and lows of these volumes. One low continues to be these cheap volumes that Viz just threw together, it’s very obvious they have no care about this product, which is a shame. I am not looking forward to how they will cheaply throw 4 volumes together for the last Omni.

Now that I’m done complaining about Viz let me take the time to rant about what I felt was the low point of the volume Kail and Ramses’ dick waving contest in the middle of battle. It was so stupid and made me dislike them both even more, which I didn’t think was possible. Also why were they suddenly naked during said dick waving contest?

I’m not even going to get into Yuri and Kail’s big reunion perhaps if I liked them as a pairing I would care but I don’t so I didn’t.

The downfall of Nefertiti was the highlight for me. Especially her monologue to Yuri about how they are not the same. How Yuri would never understand her, what she’s been through to be where she is. I also liked that some of her servants refused to leave her and how in this world the bust of Nefertiti having one eye was given reasoning, it’s a mystery that baffles scholars in the real world.

I like how this series doesn’t shy away from the effects of war. Including one of the rebels hating Yuri and wanting her dead.
I’m interested to see how Nakia’s downfall will play out.
