About the author

Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.

He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.

He is a recipient the Tezuka Award for manga.

Not my favorite volume, but for better or worse it's JoJo, and there's nothing quite like it.

Series: Steel Ball Run #7 (Ch. 49-55)
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

This volume picks up shortly after the previous episode ends. Lucy is trying to get close to the president to try and steal the mummy heart he has. She ends up going through his wife and it leads to her getting the pieces but also leads to a big shootout and battle. It was honestly a bit cringy in the beginning because Lucy is only 14 and all these adults are being sexual with her. Also her marriage is disgusting because her husband is in his 50s. Honestly, I don’t really like Lucy and her storyline but it will be interesting to see what will happen next with her.

Next this jumps to Gyro and Johnny being pursued by two new people, one of which is a man from Gyro’s past and the other a stand user. This was an interesting battle, not because of the stand user, but because of Wekapipo, who also uses steel balls to fight. His ability is different from Gyros’ but made for a very difficult battle but of course they eventually win. Then the sixth part of the race ends up being completed.

Overall, this had some interesting battles and abilities. While Johnny and Gyro are the focus of this series, this volume felt more focused on Lucy and Wekapipo’s stories since it took up about half of the book, but the last half is the battle against Wekapipo and Magent Magent.

The beginning of the volume starts with some risque scenes with Lucy which is controversial due to her age, but it also showed her as a capable spy who can handle herself. The rest of the volume is dedicated to a fight with more bizarre characters, one of which (Wekapipo) used the steel balls (combat technique), so we had a cool insight into how special Gyro's golden spin is against it. Wekapipo is a minor character but had an emotional backstory in a few pages. It goes to show you how much effort was put into writing; all of the cast of SBR is fleshed out and interesting.

Pockets of brilliance - a delightful Lucy spy story, winter harshness, and the final chapter to reorient the reader. Unfortunately this volume is marred by a creepy, lecherous Lucy subplot and yet another long fight with random Stand users whose powers and backstory are disposable. Our heroes bleed dramatically but they're never in believable danger, giving a video game feel.

kindle edition errors

Amazing volume but the first portion of chapter 51 has a few pages missing that removes significant story information. If they fixed that then I could recommend this easily; unfortunately like this either read it physical or somewhere else
