Donovan Hill is a grump whose trauma has caused him to spend years acting like a jacka*s. Though he’s ready for a change, he doesn't know how to get back to the man he was before. He hopes that a return to his Alma Mater for Homecoming and the retirement celebration of his band director will help him remember who he used to be.
Honor Havenwood is a ray of sunshine whose everyday fight is not letting the issues of life take her down. She stays booked and busy in an effort to remain distracted while dealing with the messy and embarrassing aftermath of a divorce. All she wants to do is maintain her upbeat disposition and get through Homecoming and her former band director’s retirement celebration.
When the band director asks if she would be willing to host "the grump" for the week, Honor agrees. She has no idea that her decision just might throw her life into a tailspin.
Love me a grumpy sunshine romance. 🥰 When Donovan learns that his fiancé has ill intentions, he is ready to call it quits. Then tragedy strikes, and he is unable to reconcile his feelings about all that has happened. The trauma causes him to act out and become a completely different person that his friends and family no longer want to be around. 🥹 Wanting to change his outlook on life, and his disposition, he goes on a weeklong trip to his alma mater for a celebration, that changes everything.
Honor, the strait-laced church girl, is coming into her own after her divorce nearly wrecked her! 💔 Being the sweetheart she is, she agrees to host Donovan for the celebration. They initially clash as Donovan still has his asshole tendencies flying high. However, Honor takes it in stride as she knows what he has gone through. Slowly as the two spend time together, getting to know one another, vulnerabilities, fears, and insecurities are shared. As they begin to heal, love is blossoming. I loved how Tracy incorporated the spiritual aspects in this read, without being preachy! Really enjoyed this.
Yes, that is what I said. Also, its a second chance love story for old school bandmates and secret crushes who reunite for their band director's retirement celebration.
I really enjoyed Donovan and Honor being together. It was a second chance at love for both of them since Donovan had a messy love life in the past and Honor was divorced. It was also a slow burn story due to Honor's Christianity but that added a depth to their relationship. It was good to see how they got to know one another and fall in love. Great book with emotional moments and a lot of fun moments during the celebration on the HBCU campus!!
The storyline was relatable enough to be invested in it. I loved that Honor was a Christian , loved God and let her walk reflect it. She wasn’t perfect but she was accountable and sincerely trying. I also loved that the characters had enough intelligence and enough of a vocabulary that course wasn’t the bulk of what they said.
In the other books that was written about Donovan‘s brothers I was so curious to read his book. He was rude and grumpy all the time! It was so eye-opening to see what truly happened in He and Nevaeh‘s relationship. I loved seeing that he found healing through therapy and Honors friendship.
Excellent love story. Sometimes our mental struggles are tied to things that happen to us in our past and present. Honored and Donovan needed the love of each other to survive Thanks for keeping it real for us !
Honor valued her religion and being a peaceful person. While dealing with a divorce she tries to stay active but not in search of love. Donovan experienced trauma that lead him to stir away from a lot of things in life. Both, hoping to find themselves again may lead them to find unexpected timing.
I really enjoyed this one. It was very realistic and relatable. I got the word in one paragraph and a laugh in the next. I enjoyed that there wasn’t a lot of spice at all but the intimacy was well written. The growth between these two was beautiful. And TWO EPILOGUE’S, thank you ma’am!!!!
This book really stuck with me even after I finished it. It really proved that the right person can influence someone to make the necessary changes for the better. Donovan was sick of being grumpy but didn't know how to come out of it. Once, he is basically forced to stay with Honor for homecoming weekend he starts to see where everything essentially went wrong in his life. I absolutely loved Honor. She stood on her beliefs and wasn't willing to bend them for anyone. The way she slowly had Donovan opening up and finding himself again was beautiful. Honor and Donovan needed each other, and I'm glad it worked out. My favorite scene was hands down when they ran into her ex.
