This is part of a series from The Wild Rose Press called “The Haunting of Pinedale High”. All the stories take place in the same small town and are paranormal and are YA in that the main characters are teenagers.

In this one, Ben Danvers has lost his twin sister, Beth. But, he can still see and communicate with her ghost. He keeps it quiet that he can do this until he meets a cute girl—who can also see ghosts. Together, the two of them, along with Beth, tackle a decades old murder mystery of the volleyball team. But they have to convince their parents and the local cops that the killer is still out there—and they could be next.

I love the emotions this evokes and the conflicts that Ben faces when trying to convince others that, first, he’s not crazy, and second, that there really is a danger out there and the killer’s not done yet.

I loved the ending. That twist was very satisfying.

Recommended.

Twisted Fates is a short, fast-paced YA novel with supernatural elements. It follows two siblings, Ben and Beth, as they start at a new school. The twist, so to speak, is that Beth is dead, and Ben is pretty much the only person who knows she's still hanging around in ghostly form.

Not everything is hunky-dory at the new school. Ben befriends the school outcast, and Beth discovers she isn't the only ghost in the school. Discovering the truth behind the deaths of the girls' volleyball team that haunts the hallways is the mystery at the center of the story.

Chapters alternate between the siblings, keeping the pace sprightly and offering both living and dead perspectives on all the happenings. I feel this technique worked quite well. As stated earlier, the story is relatively short, more of a novella in length than a novel. Despite that, I didn't feel the tale was shortchanged in the least. It is a quick, crisp yarn.

Depending on maturity and reading ability, readers as young as 11 or so could find this story appealing, especially if they have an interest in ghosts. In my opinion, that puts the ideal reader between 11-ish and 15-ish with an interest in ghosts. Bottom line, readers interested in paranormal stories that aren't overly intense or gory will find much to enjoy in Twisted Fates.

They say the connection between twins is deeply binding, and the sibling twins in Twisted Fates, by SD Porter, take this bond to a whole new level when one of them dies. Ben’s sister Beth, now a ghost tethered to her brother, follows him to his new home in Pinedale, North Carolina. He’s trying to finish high school with a fresh start, something his family desperately wants. But when he meets another student who sees ghosts herself—ghosts murdered in 1985—Ben finds himself whirled into a mystery to find the culprit…who just might be linked to his own sister’s death.

This story is a short novella and a satisfying quick read. The pacing is fast and clever, and it left me wondering how the author would ever be able to tie up the loose ends in time. She did so effortlessly, placing the reader right into the action. Written from two POVs, Ben and Beth, this story falls into the young adult, paranormal genre. There are heavier topics in this book, especially grief and the aftermath of murder. Though with the story set in a cozy, small town high school, there’s no horror or gore. It’s more of a mystery instead. And the breakthroughs that each sibling makes from beginning to end will move any reader!

Twisted Fates was the first of the Pinedale High series that I've read, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything from previous books in the series - it worked just fine as a stand-alone. I really enjoyed the twist right at the beginning with Beth's character, and the sibling dynamics throughout were nice. I liked the dual POV between Ben & Beth, as Beth's character had abilities that Ben didn't, which helped to move their sleuthing along. The ending was sweet and wrapped up the arc between the siblings. I do wish that there'd been more between the suspected killer and the siblings in the final chapters leading up to the end, but it was still a satisfactory climax to the suspense of the story. would recommend this to readers who enjoy mysteries with some paranormal elements. It wasn't overly graphic, nor was there any romantic spice.

Ghosts solve old and new murders

This beautifully written story focuses on the 40 year old murder of the Pinedale High's Girls' Volleyball team, coach and a janitor by arson and the murder of Ben's twin sister, Beth, a few short months ago. Ben can see his ghost sister and she can see the ghosts trapped in the school. They are assisted by Carly who also can see ghosts. The story artfully captures the bond between siblings, especially twins, and the pain senseless violence leaves behind even for decades later. I loved this story. If you didn't believe in spirits trapped on earth before, when you finish this book you will believe in ghosts! Highly recommended.

Our Review: This one has it all: well-drawn, interesting characters, both human and ghostly; compelling goals, motivation and conflict, coming from a variety of sources; and emotion. Gut wrenching, from the heart, appealing to all age groups, emotion. A large box of tissues is called for, particularly during the last pages. This is one beautiful story. Our congratulations go out to all who are responsible for bringing this excellent story to fruition.

Based on a scale of 1-5, Twisted Fates merits a 9.

A fun fast read with lots of mystery and all of the feels.

Ben’s move to Pinedale High means he can have a fresh start after his twin sister, Beth’s, murder. But he’s about to learn there’s no such thing as coincidence.

I look forward to more from the author.

A fun, quick read. Twisted Fates blends the supernatural with real human grief. Ben is still reeling from the unsolved murder of his twin sister. After strange things start happening at his new high school, captive spirits help him and a classmate investigate multiple murders, including his own sister’s. Nothing can hurt the ghosts, but a serial killer is after the teenage humans hunting him. SD Porter tells a story grounded in the everyday details of high school life and small-town sorrow. It's twisty, fast-paced, and full of emotional reveals without feeling over-the-top.
