Of Potions and Honey

Rate this book
An unexpected inheritance. A potion shop in a sleepy little town. An aloof neighbour with walls around her heart.

When Mira receives a letter from a distant relative bequeathing her an old potion shop in the small town of Emberglen, she grasps this opportunity to flee a miserable job in the city and start anew. With little experience but ample enthusiasm, Mira throws herself into running her late uncle’s shop right at the edge of the beautiful Honeywood.

While Mira is busy fixing up her new house, making friends with the townspeople, and learning how to brew, things in Emberglen turn out to be not quite as idyllic as they appear. Mira’s former employer is already in town, and the mystical spring that has let the villages along the Honeywood flourish for so long is drying up. With her fledgling business at stake, Mira teams up with her equally grumpy and attractive neighbour Yoni and her old childhood friend Kayden to try and save the town that is just beginning to become her new home.

Of Potions and Honey is a cosy, sapphic romantic fantasy for fans of The Spellshop and Stardew Valley!

This was such a charming, cozy story. One of those you read purely because of the vibes. I could see the village of Emberglen so vividly in my mind, the author did a wonderful job with that! Although this story is not complex, I was left with such a good feeling after finishing this book and I would recommend it if you need something easy and quick, maybe an in-between read or if you are unsure of what to pick up. It was absolutely lovely!

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for giving me a ARC of this book. All opinions are my own!

A lovely cozy romantic fantasy about Mira that recive for his uncle an old potion shop in the small town of Emberglen. It is not esay in the begging for her to start a new shop and to live in a town that seem isolated. But slowly she get to know her neighboors and understants the charm of that place.

I like very much the friendshiphs that Mira build with Kayan and Yona, and I love so much Marigold. She is such a cutie. Also the all town together for expose the big corporation was a really great moment, I love stories when the characters work in team to save their homes.

CW: Past Character Death

4.5 / 5 Stars

This book honestly felt like being wrapped in a soft blanket and handed a cup of something warm — probably honey. :D

At its core, it’s a beautifully crafted, character-driven story about learning to take the plunge into the unknown… without ever feeling like it's shaming the reader for potentially not sharing said sentiments. Like, on paper, girl is kinda reckless, resigning from her job, moving into a half empty small town, hours away from friends or family, with barely any money and no clue if she'll make it even more than a week. She's not naive, but that sure as hell was a very impulsive thing to do. Which we acknowledge. Especially when that think before you act attidue eventually catches up to her. There are a billion things that could have gone wrong, but jumping into the abyss she did end up finding out that she was capable of more than she thought. Again, the book is not saying to duck the risks, but I think it finds a very nice middle ground, that leaves me with a warm and hopefull feeling. I'm bringing all this up because I've read books who sometimes conciously - or not - feel like they're shaming people who'd rather not risk drowing when they jump into the unknown, but this is absolutly not the case here. Just warmth to be found here.

It had some nice cottagecore vibes, without truly being a cottagecore book. The magical realism def helped to achieve that feeling, as did the small town setting.

The romance was also really sweet. Slow burn, like, really slow burn, where we grow to appreciate the person for their personhood first and then *gasp* decide to date and see where it goes. Refreshing. Oh, their also both bi ;D

Also, shoutout to the plot thread involving a “totally not shady, totally not evil” company that may or may not be heavily inspired by real life events *cough* Nestlé *cough*.

Here’s the quick list of everything that made me fall for this book:

♡ Bi4Bi romance
♡ Slow burn
♡ Magical realism
♡ Cozy cottagecore vibes
♡ Small-town
♡ A suspiciously familiar evil corporation (you know what you did, Nestlé)
♡ A character-focused story about courage and finding your own pace

Final Thoughts:
A cozy and tender story that left me feeling warm, hopeful inside.

4.5⭐️ This was such a cozy, warm story! Perfect for this time of year even though it doesn’t actually take place in autumn/winter. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The story begins with Mira finding out and settling an inheritance from her late uncle, whom she visited often when a child. She decides to sell but then can no longer stand her current job and ends up relocating to the town of Emberglen, move into the house and reopen the potions shop she inherited.

While Mira becomes acquainted with the town, the people and her new lodgings, there is something stirring the waters behind the scenes making many houses now stand empty. There’s also the store that’s a part of the emporium Mira quit that has settled in Emberglen as well and other than the mayor no one is happy about.

Can Mira make a home for herself? Can she make potions and open a store? Read and find out! I recommend this cozy, whimsical story to brighten your day!

Thank you to BookSirens and the author for letting me read this e-arc in return for a review!

3.5 ⭐️ — this was a very cute and cozy mystery story about a small town with some magical realism and a lot of fun characters. i think in this book the romance aspect was not part of the plotline, which i like in mysteries and fantasy books. you could describe it as a slowburn but half of the book you're not even sure that there is a romance because it is barely hinted at and it came kind of out of nowhere for me.

the writing and dialogue felt a bit clunky at times, but maybe that's just a me thing since i'm used to high fantasy and classics these days. i did like the open ending a lot, leaving room for a possible next book.

I feel as if the romance throughout this book is very much on the back burner. If you are into and enjoy slow burns this one will be more than enough for you. However, if you want to read something small town and a small mystery (which was easy to figure out chapters before the FMC does) this is the perfect book for you.

Although the plot was predictable and the romance super slow, this was such a well written enjoyable novel. A super cosy read that is so bingeable, it can be done in one sitting!

Of Potions and Honey by Cara N. Delaney is a sweet Sapphic romance with a hint of mystery and the cutest cosy vibes, and it was a delight to read.
When Mira unexpectedly inherits a potion shop in the quiet town of Emberglen it gives her the chance to leave behind the city and the job that is making her miserable, but it is not going to be without its challenges, not the least of which is that she has never brewed a potion in her life. Once she arrives she starts to settle in and even make friends, despite the somewhat frosty welcome from some of the townsfolk but reopening the Potion Shop is not going to be easy, even with the book of instructions her uncle left behind. When the magical spring that supplies water to the town starts to run dry it seems like Mira's former employer might be involved, but without the water it will be impossible to brew potions and save the shop. It will take all of Mira's effort and smarts to figure it out, but with a little help from her childhood friend Kayden, and her grumpy but beautiful neighbour Yoni they may be able to save not just the shop but the town itself.
This was such a soothing comfort read, the cosy vibes were perfect and reading it felt like a hug in book form, perfect for when you just need something to make you feel good. The book is character driven but has enough plot to keep you invested, even though you will definitely figure it out before the characters do and the romance, though slow burn is adorably wholesome because there is real growth from friendship to more.
This was the perfect book to curl up with on a cold Autumn night.

I would like to thank BookSirens for the copy of Potions and Honey by Cara N. Delaney. I wasn’t sure what to expect after reading the description, but I quickly found myself cozied up and thoroughly enjoying the story.

This book is a warm, comforting journey about finding oneself and stepping through open doors to discover where they lead. The FMC has made a huge change in her life and is navigating the ups and downs of building something new for herself. She’s learning an exciting—yet intimidating—"new career", all while making new friends and slowly shaping a life that feels truly her own. The story features a strong found-family trope and a small-town community that truly sticks together. The characters are relatable and charming—exactly the kind of friends you wish you had.

The small-town setting invites you into a slower-paced life, creating a soothing and nostalgic atmosphere. When a situation arises, a few concerned townspeople step up to protect what matters most. Their determination adds heart and depth to the story, highlighting the power of people who care enough to take action.

This story doesn’t rely on excitement or flashy twists, but sometimes we need a book that lets us slow down and enjoy the simple things in life—while still offering just enough conflict to keep us turning the pages. I would have loved for the story to be a bit longer, but I truly appreciated how it highlights the strength of our FMC as she bravely navigates the challenges of building a new life for herself.

“A way to a woman’s heart goes past her cat” - I could not agree more

This was certainly a low stakes cozy fantasy! While it was fantasy, it wasn’t action ridden which made it something smooth and easy to float through the pages. Verrrry slow burn, but I felt it made the romance more realistic than instant-love that fills most of the shelves.

Of Potions and Honey was cute, but not quite seamless. The transitions were choppy at times between chapters that made it difficult to keep up. New chapters start without following previous chapters and instead just start in the middle of an entirely different thought, previous chapters don’t feel like they’ve concluded. I will also note that the last 25% ish has a much quicker pace on the conflict than anything else in the book. The ending conflict is largely unresolved, but cannot fill another entire book with the falling resolution. We really just needed an epilogue. However, the romance plot does end on a good note and could be left as is with a satisfying conclusion. These finishing touches aside, I still enjoyed being dragged into the ambiance and brought along for the ride.

Lastly, I am also gonna need a wood sprite to visit my cats to ensure them a lengthy lifespan as well. Perhaps extra ears for them too will help them to ignore me less (unlikely).

Thank you to Booksirens for this free ARC which I am reviewing voluntarily.

I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review.
This is my second book ny the author, the first being the excellent "Blade of the Crown" and both of them have a slow burn romance running through. it seems to be the style of the author = and why not as she is so damn good at it.
If I looked up "cozy romance" in a dictionary and saw a picture of this nook next to it I would not be surprised, no bodice ripping here, or unbuttoning, or even slightly loosening this is a book you can fall asleep reading safe in the knowledge that it will not be open at an embarrassing page as there are no embarrassing pages just a great story. A story that is well written and surprisingly hard to put down, even though it is fairly predictable the reader has to keep reading just in case something goes wrong and spoils Mira's happiness.
Sweet as the honey in the title, recommended and five deserved stars. After two books I am hooked on this queen of slow burn romances - when is the next onw?

Of Potions and Honey is pure magic in every sense of the word. Cara N. Delaney has crafted a story that feels like a warm hug for the soul — full of charm, gentle humor, and little sparks of enchantment that made me smile again and again. The characters are delightful and wonderfully relatable, each with their own quirks that make them feel like friends you wish you could visit in real life.

The world of potions, tiny adventures, and sweet little surprises is utterly enchanting, and I loved how the story balances whimsy with heartfelt moments. There were scenes that made me laugh, moments that made me sigh happily, and even a few that made me reflect on kindness, courage, and love in unexpected forms. It’s the kind of book that stays with you, long after you’ve closed the cover.

If I had to nitpick, I’d say I wanted just a touch more tension in the middle, but honestly, the joy and warmth of this story more than make up for it. Delaney’s voice is so bright and inviting, and her storytelling is as comforting as a cup of honeyed tea on a rainy afternoon.

Thank you, Book Sirens for providing me the opportunity to read an ARC copy of ‘Of Potions and Honey.’ All opinions below are my own. I was not paid for this review.

[3.25 stars]

This has to be one of the most coziest books I have ever read and although I’ve been recently delving into and loving the cozy fantasy genre, I do feel this was a bit too cozy for my taste. Cara N. Delaney crafted a world of heartfelt moments and delightful ambiance. The characters and story were well-written and at times, downright relatable. I believe Delaney’s strongest writing is in the craftsmanship of the characters and the relationships that slowly bloom. What I truly loved about the book was the conversations it had sprinkled throughout the story. The plot itself was very straightforward and predictable. I found it to be an easy read and easily consumable.

The only issues I have are simply my personal preference. I wished a few things were explored and stretched out more such as the romance and including additional scenes of Mira navigating potion work. It somewhat felt too quick for my liking, but not too much that it took me out of the story or affected my enjoyment of the story.

Mira’s life is safe, predictable—and painfully ordinary. She’s stuck in a job she doesn't enjoy (with an a*** as a boss), going through life without expecting much to change. Then, out of nowhere, she inherits her uncle’s shop. No one is more shocked than Mira herself. What starts as a quick trip to sign legal papers turns into something far more when she discovers a letter from her uncle—a heartfelt invitation to start over by taking over and making potions. Sounds like a weird proposal. Or does it?

What seems impossible at first slowly transforms into a beautiful journey of rediscovering herself. Mira learns to take chances, to open her heart to new friendships, and to embrace a community that feels like home. This story reminds us that sometimes the biggest risks lead to the most rewarding ones.
“When life offers a second chance, dare to say yes.”

It's a feel-good book, that I enjoyed very much and couldn't put it down. It made me feel good and was exactly what I needed in the moment.

Cats always know ✨

⭐ 4,5/5

I pre-ordered this novel completely by chance and good lord, I don't regret my purchase for a single moment.
Several times while reading this book I told myself "I'll finish the chapter and then I'll go eat." well spoiler alert, I was so absorbed that I didn't even realize I was starting new chapters and I ate very late 😔

I must say that it's quite difficult to find cozy fantasy novels that are both interesting while being easy going and sapphic.
This book doesn't have an overly complex universe setting so we managed to get immersed in it quite quickly, the characters are lovely, and above all the encountered problem is there to enhance the plot but isn't overly complicated/or overdramatic and that's all I expect from a cozy fantasy.

I might have just wanted an epilogue, but I understand the choice to leave an open ending.

I'll definitely keep an eye on this author from now on, and I highly recommend this book 🫶🏻

This is the second book I have read by this author and it certainly follows the same style. I really love the flowing way the author writes, the descriptions of Emberglen and surrounding areas are enough to be able to visualise the place as you are reading and I love that it is set in a realm that is somewhat advanced but lacks a lot of our modern comforts.

I liked the story between Mira and Yoni, I did not at first link the 2 together and it was a classic friends to lovers story. The story behind it about the dwindling water and the greedy corporate was also good but I think I sussed that one pretty quick! The reason this has 3 stars is that the author always does leave it late to have the 2 protagonists come together leaving no real time to enjoy their relationship, but this does seem to be a style in all her books, it just doesn't satisfy me fully! Overall a really nice read.

Mira takes the opportunity to start fresh in Emberglen by inheriting the house her uncle lived and the potion shop he owned. She tries her best to follow in his footsteps in potion making but whether it is enough to sustain a living is one of the many unknowns for Mira.

The title of the book and its storyline caught my attention and did not disappoint. It was an enjoyable read from start to finish. There some romance in the story but it definitely wasn't at the forefront of the story. While I was hoping to know more about the romance between Mira and Yoni, I did not miss it as much as learning about Emberglen and its community. The different characters and their tight-knit bond was a pleasure to read.

I did notice a few grammatical and spelling errors but it not prevent me from finishing the Of Potions and Honey.

Oh my goodness!

What a cozy, (for some reason fall vibes) small town novel. I absolutely loved the whole book. From the characters, to the plot, the easy going pace, it all made for a very extremely enjoyable read. It had me kicking my feet at points with just how cute it was. Yoni being a slight bit of a grump was 10/10, and Mira was a delight. I’m not going to lie, getting to read something without a trigger warning page, nor need for one was a breath of fresh air, that I was more than happy to come up for.

I legit have 0 criticisms, and this will for sure be added to my re-read pile. I hope there is a second book at some point, because I really want to see this town thrive and what other antics our little potion shop owner can get into.

Thank you so much for the free advanced copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily!

Of Potions and Honey is a cozy, FF-adjacent fantasy with a gentle, comforting atmosphere rather than a romance-forward focus. Mira’s return to her homeland and her attempt to open a potion shop draw the reader into a small-town setting infused with soft, understated magic. I really enjoyed the slice-of-life feel of building a small business, the sense of community, and the quiet adventure woven through the story.

While this wasn’t what I usually expect from FF romance, the friendships were warm and engaging, and the cozy tone carried the book for me. A special mention goes to Marigold—the magnificent cat who absolutely knows she’s the queen of the town.

This isn’t a romance-heavy read; the romantic elements stay firmly in the background. Still, it’s a pleasant, cozy fantasy for readers who enjoy atmosphere over passion.

Loved the vibes of this one - such a cottagecore cosy fantasy! I'm usually a romance girlie, but I enjoyed that it took kind of a backseat here, it meant that we got to see more of the community, and definitely added to the almost cosy game vibes that this had, it felt like a side story alongside the main part of running a shop. I was so invested in the scandal we were following throughout, and appreciated the anti-corporation conversations surrounding it.I appreciated the realistic depiction of the worries with starting a business, and the financial burdens that come with that. Had a fab time reading, recommend this for a chill, community-based sapphic read!

I like Mira and Yoni together. This is a real slow burn lesbian romance that keeps you guessing almost to the end. Their first kiss is basically on the last page of the book. The anticipation is there, though.

I was slightly confused with the times of the book, not the timeline… Some of it feels olden times and at other stages it feels more modern, but then there are magical items involved without actual witches in the story.

It was still an enjoyable read. I would have loved to see the full HEA with Mira and Yoni, and I really hope there might be a next book for them.

Mira inherits a house with a potion shop attached in small town Emberglen from her uncle. She doesn't know how to make potions but fed up with her job in the city Mira moves into the house and works on fixing it up and learning how to make potions. Something is amiss in town and Mira teams up with her attractive neighbor Yoni and Kayden, her friend from visits there as a child to solve the mystery and save the town. This is a nice cozy read with low angst and HEA. I liked Yoni's dry humor as she slowly warmed to Mira.

I received an ARC of this novel in return for an honest review.

In Of Potions and Honey, Stardew Valley meets a hallmark movie with a slow-burn, family-friendly, sapphic romance. The protag, Mira, leaves an unappreciative, abusive sales job in the city and revitalizes a family potion shop in a small town where everyone knows your name. The book reads as cozy, cottage core with a coming together, town-saving subplot. It also has bi rep with one of the main characters.

Recommended if you are looking for a warm, comfy read with supportive characters who make you feel hopeful about the power of community.

I thought this book was adorable. It has a really cozy, magical small town vibe. The romance is the slowest of slow burns and not the primary focal point of the book.

I loved all the characters I was supposed to love and disliked the characters I was supposed to dislike. I’ll be honest though, my favorite characters were Marigold and Poppy, there’s no competition.

At first the pace can be a bit slow but it gets a bit faster halfway through the book. Personally, I never felt bored by the story. It really felt similar to playing Stardew Valley.

I was asked by BookSirens to read Of Potions & Honey by Cara N. Delaney and provide an honest review.

It took me a very long time to get into this book, I am a mood reader and every time I started Of Potions and Honey it didn’t keep my interest, but I am glad I decided to push forward this time!

If you like a bit of mystery, cozy small town relationships and a bit of magic this one is for you. There was a hint of romantic elements, but it was not the main part of the story and therefore fell to the background and honestly, it didn’t feel necessary. I skimmed over those parts as it didn’t truly matter to the plot.

Of potions and honey is a cosy cute read with a sloth burn romance and a mystery to boot.
Mira takes a risk by quitting her job with a horrible supervisor and giving her inherited potions shop a go like her uncle wanted. The timing of the inheritance is perhaps what pushes her to giving her notice so randomly.
The town of Emberglen has its charms but is slowly dying with numerous empty properties. But why?
The slow burn romance is so slow that it makes watching paint dry seem like a 5 minute hobby.
A curl up on the sofa with a cup of tea and lose yourself kind of book.

I looooove stories about opening up a small business in a quiet little town somewhere and this one had some excellent cosy cottage-core vibes ✨
I wasn’t a fan of the romance but really enjoyed all the potion making and descriptions of Emberglen. It could have done with another round of edits but all in all, this was a really lovely first instalment of what promises to be a series of fun, heartwarming stories.

I really enjoyed this book !

I was a lovely cosy book, that made me feel really comforted! I would highly recommend if you want a sweet small town romance story. I loved the characters and could imagine myself I’m the town with them! I also loved the animal sidekicks (poppy and Marigold!), one of my favourite things is pets in books!

The only reason it’s not a 5 star is because I felt it wrapped up too quickly!

I greatly enjoyed this book! I loved how the magical world is presented softly, as a natural part of everything, and not some big secret. I loved the dog, Poppy, and the way she stood out from other animals but wove herself into the lives of the main character and the town. I enjoyed seeing the main character, Mia, blossom into her own after moving from the big city. She’s so relatable from start to finish!

Every bit as sweet as the name implies. I loved the characters and the community and was sad to leave them all when I finished the story.
My only complaint is that it could use a copy editor. There was the occasional typo and some places where the wording could be optimized. However, in terms of the story, no notes other than please write more!

The book was good, however there wasn’t much to it. It was very simple and predictable. I liked it but I wished there was more to it. I think with more story development it could have been better but it just felt kind of flat.
