A science fiction adventure set in the Irish rave scene of the 1990’s (between County Sligo, and outer space). The plot has a group of friends return from an outdoor party to watch the president’s address scene from the alien invasion film ‘Independence Day’. They manage to confuse the scene with reality, and set out to help save humanity -only to find themselves in the middle of a separate, and real, extraterrestrial invasion.
I went into this one with high hopes. I received a free copy from the author, who had shared it on Reddit and encouraged people to check out the audiobook, describing it as Half-Baked meets The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. As I listened, it felt closer to Shaun of the Dead, if Shaun of the Dead had a significantly lower budget.
The audiobook appears to be narrated by the author himself, which isn’t inherently a problem. However, the recording quality here really detracts from the experience. The microphone has noticeable echo and the pacing is rushed in places, and dialogue often gets lost in the delivery. There’s no distinct vocal differentiation between characters, and the overall sound mixing is rough. At one point, dogs bark in the background, and unfortunately, that’s not part of the narrative.
As for the story itself, it’s not without charm. I can see it appealing to readers who enjoy offbeat, absurd humor. There’s a playful energy beneath the rough presentation, and the core idea has potential.
My advice to the author would be: this story would benefit enormously from a round of professional editing and a dedicated audiobook narrator. The imagination is there, and the humor could land more effectively with cleaner execution. You have strong ideas, you’re just losing a lot of their impact by trying to handle every element alone.
