Some scars are invisible. Some wounds never fully heal. But love has a way of mending even the deepest fractures.
Harper never thought she’d escape. After twelve years trapped in an abusive relationship, she finally finds the courage to run–landing in the small, welcoming town of Brookhaven, with her ten-year-old son, Connor. With a fresh start and a job at the local bakery, she’s determined to rebuild her life. Romance? That’s not on the table. Until she meets Ryan.
Ryan has spent the last year hiding in Brookhaven, trying to outrun the ghosts of his past. As an ex-NHL enforcer with a reputation for being ruthless on the ice, he knows better than to hope for something good. Especially with someone as strong, kind, and breathtaking as Harper. She deserves more than a broken man like him.
But no matter how hard they fight it, the pull between them is undeniable. Their late-night confessions turn into something deeper. Something real. And just as Ryan begins to believe he might finally deserve happiness, the past comes knocking–threatening to destroy the fragile life they’ve built.
With old wounds reopened, and trust shattered, Harper and Ryan must decide if love is worth the risk. Because the hardest battles aren’t fought on the ice or in the past–they’re fought for the future.
Perfect for fans of emotional, small-town romances with heartwarming found family, swoon-worthy tension, and second chances, Almost Ours is a story about love, healing, and finding the courage to fight for the life you deserve.
This was my first ever ARC book I received and what a good one to start with!!! I’m a huge fan of hockey romance books and this one was different in the best way. A beautiful story of healing, I swear I teared up every single chapter! I’m also a huge fan of the epilogue being in a side characters POV instead of the main character and I think this one was done in the most beautiful way. 100% recommend
Wow. Happy release day Ashley and what an amazing debut! This was probably one of the biggest emotional rollercoasters I’ve been on. Harper is strong and resilient. Fierce and devoted. An amazing mother. No doubt about it. The lengths she went to to protect herself but more importantly, keep Connor safe, was everything. And Ryan, oh how I love me a broken and grumpy man. He was so misunderstood and it was honestly heartbreaking. The way these two heal each other, and protect each other. Ugh, my heart. And the relationship between Ryan and Connor had my momma heart feeling all the feels. Each and every interaction between them had me melting and loving Ryan even more. And the last, best part about this book was the found family. Each of our side characters brought so much happiness to Ryan and Harper’s story. A sense of home and belonging. Ryan, Shane and Kyle’s friendship. Nina and Harper’s friendship. And our sweet Benny. These are the type of people everyone wants in their corner. This book had so much depth and, as someone who has been in Harper’s shoes, truly provided so much healing for me. My husband is my Ryan. And if you’ve been in the trenches, or are currently in them, just know that your Ryan is out there too, you just have to survive your Reid and know you’re never alone. No matter how isolating it feels.
Thank you so much to Ashley and Luna Literary Management for an ARC of Almost Ours. I have a good idea of who gets book two and I cannot wait!
read if you love: small town, found family, hockey coach x single mom, DV survivor, slow burn, healing romance TW: domestic violence, mental health struggles, medical trauma, hospitalization, gvn violence
Harper and Ryan are two people shaped by their pasts — both carrying experiences that have left lasting marks on how they live and love, which made them feel so incredibly real.🩵
Harper is fierce and devoted, willing to do anything for her child. She’s built walls around her heart, but when Ryan unexpectedly walks into her life, he begins to slowly, gently break them down.🩷
I absolutely loved the cozy winter vibes of this story and the fact that the MMC was a coaching hockey to kids - it added such warmth and softness to his character.
Ryan and Connor’s relationship was so freaking cute, and every interaction between them made my heart melt. Ryan didn’t just care for Harper, but for Connor too, always showing up for them even when distance came between them.🏒
The found family element was another highlight — it brought so much heart, laughter, and a sense of belonging that made the story feel extra special.
I hope we get a spinoff of Shane and Nina!🤞🏼
My only small critique is that some of the conflict happened a bit too close to the end, and I found myself anxiously waiting for it to be resolved.
Still, Almost Ours was such a sweet, easy read that left me smiling. ❄️💙
ARC Review ✨ First I would like to say a big thank you to Ashley for letting me be apart of this ARC Team! Rate: 4/5⭐️
What to expect when reading Almost Ours; -Small Town -Hockey Coach -Single Mom -Found Family -Slow Burn -DV Survivor
You get to follow Ryan and Harper. First check trigger warnings some topics may be heavy for some. Harper is ready to get her and her son to a better, safe life and finds herself in a small town. Ryan lets his past haunt him. Both have troubled past but will they let that get in the way for what could be a happy ending?
As her debut novel Ashley you did amazing! This book made you feel like you were right in Brookhaven. These characters were fabulous! You felt like you were apart of their little family lol The chemistry between Harper and Ryan was amazing but I think he melted me the most with the way he was with her son, Conner. I was a puddle! Also I am a complete sucker for this epilogue lol
Fav Quote: •”Damn unicorn in flannel” •”a hot weirdo” •”you don’t have to walk through anymore storms alone”
Make sure you get your copy of the book when it releases Nov. 14th🩷 #bookstagram #romance #review
It’s not just a story of romance, but also one of healing. Our main characters, Harper and Ryan, are both carrying heavy emotional scars. Harper is fleeing an abusive relationship and looking for a safe, fresh start for herself and her son, Connor. Ryan is battling his own demons — guilt and grief that weigh heavily on him. Two broken people who slowly find healing through each other.
The story follows their journey through trials and tribulations, but together they learn to trust, to love, and to rebuild. It’s a beautiful reminder that love can be both soft and strong. The small-town setting adds the perfect dose of warmth and charm, and the side characters are hilarious — the kind of people you’d love to have in your own life. I’m really hoping we get a spin-off with Shane and Nina soon!
I’ll end with the words by the author that perfectly sum up this read: “I hope Harper and Ryan’s story reminded you that healing is possible, that second chances are worth it, and that love–real, messy, transformative love–is always worth the risk.”
A beautiful representation of a small town found family, I loved reading about this cute little small town and all of the little personalities within it.
Also hello Ryan!! It’s like he got up everyday and was like what else can I do to look after everyone. Such a painful backstory and he is such a sweetie with Harper and Connor. 🧸
I will say there was heavy topics that were within this book, I feel that these made sense within the story and were written with respect and care. However I would recommend people read the trigger warnings and ensure that you’re aware of these topics 🖤
I did struggle with the length of this book, as I felt this could’ve been a bit shorter around 300 pages. The book I believe was nearly 600 pages which felt really long.
I’m not a fan of giving half stars which is why I rounded up to 4. Because most of this book was great but there were a few things I couldn’t get past. One this book was entirely too long. This horrendous thing happens 60% into the book and it becomes resolved and you’re like “oh sh*t” what else is there. I understand Harper’s reasoning when she received the anonymous text(which correct me if I’m wrong we never found out who sent it 👎) but the resolution took way too long in my opinion.
For a debut author though this was pretty good it does deal with some heavy themes, check your triggers.
Thank you to Lovenotes PR and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and options are my own.
this book was an absolute delight to read! I have laughed, cried, swooned and cried some more, not only is it a Hockey romance but its a story of not only our FMC healing after years of surviving DV but also our MC healing from a past that weighs heavily on him.
Harper has fled to a small town to start a new life, safe and secure with her son Conner but starting over isn't easy, especially when the hotty you spilled coffee on turns out to be your sons new Hockey coach AND an Ex NHL player!
Ryan has never felt like he was deserving of love, especially that messy, all consuming, can't stop thinking about them love. But after meeting Harper then her son Conner, Ryan decides he's all in and will do anything to keep that smile on both their faces, even if it means omitting a few truths he knows he should share with Harper.
Not only are our MCs absolutely relatable but the way the side characters was not only hilarious but truly caring had me laughing and crying!
Hopefully we get a spin off from Shane and Nina because I was definitely getting a vibe👀
thank you so much to the Author and LoveNotes PR for the eARC!
Okay wow, would never have guessed that this was a debut novel based on the writing style! Everything is so descriptive and I literally feel like I’m in Brookhaven with these characters! And also, this book is so emotional! I cried so many times and every single emotion the characters were feeling really came through with the writing! I love Ryan, Harper, and Connor - and every single scene with them together had my heart so full of happiness. Ryan is so patient and caring - talk about green flags! But both him & Harper have some past trauma and mental health issues they struggle with - and I love how much the mental health rep really comes out in their story.

I can’t wait to see what’s next in Brookhaven!!! Thank you so much Ashley for letting me beta read this book!
"Years of standing alone, of swallowing hurt because no one was coming to help, cracked wide open in my chest."
This was raw, this was emotional and this was beautiful.
Harper and Ryan are absolutely adorable together and this story was a whirlwind of emotions. There's some heavy DV in there, but the way things get resolved made my heart warm.
I love the aspect of small town, single mom, grumpy MMC and found family. This story had it all and then some. This was my first read by Ashley but I truly adored it! 🥰
This book made me laugh out loud, cry sad tears, be very frustrated, and cry happy tears. All the feels!! No one should have to go through what Harper and Connor went through with Reid, EVER!! So glad she met Ryan, a good man with somewhat a checkered past if you listen to the media. He has been hurt, and that makes it hard for him to trust and believe that he deserves good things. Harper has a hard time trusting anyone after her experiences with Reid. Love the friendships shown in this book: Harper and Nina, Ryan/Shane/Kyle, Connor and Liam, Benny and Harper, and Harper and Mrs. Knox. Love this book so much!! Can’t wait for book 2!!!
This was my first Ashley Parker book and let me tell you; I’m hooked! From her witty character banter to the storyline itself, I was hooked from page one. This story really resonated with me. The FMC Harper had a past that reflected a very close family member of mine and Ashley truly captured the strength that it took for Harper to leave her past behind her. Ashley was able to encapsulate the strength, perseverance and even the fear that Harper had to go through.
The story follows Harper, a mother who is fleeing her past to keep her son safe. When she spills coffee on a customer on the first day of her new job, never did she think she would meet the man who would change her life. Ryan, an ex-NHL star, has a past he’s not proud of. One freak accident changed his entire protectory of his life. When coffee gets spilled on him one morning, never did he think he’d meet and fall for the one woman who would make him see he deserved love.
Both Harper and Ryan feel like because of their pasts, they don’t deserve to love and be loved. Realizing that the other may just be the one thing to change them forever, Harper and Ryan’s journey together is anything but smooth. There’s the ever-present fear of Harper’s past catching up to her and Ryan’s determination to keep his past hidden. Will everything come crashing down? Will Ryan actually see that he deserves to be happy and that an accident is truly that? Can Harper finally breathe without the fear of someone lurking in the shadows? Read Almost Ours – Out NOW!
I received this book as an advanced reader copy from the author and I thank you for letting me experience Ryan and Harper. OMG you guys this book was like watching a Hallmark movie soooooooo good. So when I first opened this book and saw it has nearly 600 pages I thought it was going to take a while for me to get through it but as you all can see I binged this book in just a few days. So I don’t do spoilers in my reviews just some basic information, so Harper faces the challenges of escaping an abusive relationship. After a particularly bad night with her husband she packs up her son and moves to a small town trying to escape the life she had been living. In this small town of Brookhaven she meets the most important people for her little family including Ryan. Ryan has a past that was a little violent and he wants to escape that and focus on being better and when he meets Harper and Conner he was smitten from the start. This book made me feel the entire spectrum of emotions I loved Nina and Shane their banter always making me laugh (also saw this is a book 1 please tell me book 2 is going to be about Nina and Shane because I need more of their story). I had moments that made me cry and others that made me feel love. This book being as long as it is had little to no fluff chapters each portion giving you a little bit more into the story. The epilogue was perfect and made me cry happy tears. Thank you again for allowing me to arc read this book I absolutely loved it.
4/4.5 The characters are so easy to love in this book! I can picture and hear their wit, love, and banter. I love how the scenes and community of Brookhaven are set up. What a thrilling, lovely and easy to read story. There was so much feeling and description poured into this. Some scenes felt a bit drawn out due to the lengthy descriptions, but I wouldn’t say it took away from the book, just something I noticed at times. The honest and emotional plot had a good amount of spice, I could’ve even had a bit more. I wish a bit more was settled with the ex (don’t want to leave spoilers to I’ll leave it at that). But maybe we’ll have more in the sequel? We’ll see! I saw a lot of reviews that complained about the length of the book. I think if it was shorter it would’ve lacked detail on the characters and emotions/connections throughout the plot so I for one am happy with the length. It made it stand out from your typical small town romance type that I find too cheesy. Shoutout to the author for their debut novel!!!
And the epilogue??? I think it was my favourite part of the whole book. Love love love. Highly recommend!
Listen, ebooks have been hard for me lately, but this book didn’t care. It just dragged me in anyway. The beginning? It doesn’t even give you a second to breathe. You blink and suddenly you’re in that scene, in that fear, in that tension, and you’re just there with Harper and Connor. It feels like the book grabbed me and damn … it never let go 🫠✨🥹
Harper… wow. She deserves every good thing. She’s strong in that real-life way — not the movie version. The way she protects Connor, the way she gets up again after everything she’s been through… that’s queen-level strength. I just love her so much.
Now Benny. I need to talk about Benny before I talk about anything else because that man is comfort in human form. The way he greets Harper and Connor when they first arrive in town? The hot chocolate, the cinnamon roll “on the house,” like it was nothing but it meant everything? That was the moment I knew I loved him. And then the way he hires her without hesitation later — no judging, no weird looks, just “yeah, you’re in.” 😮💨🥹🫠
And from the moment Harper arrived, I kept thinking: Okay… but when is Reid going to show up? Because men like that don’t just disappear. They always come back. Always. And the whole time, I just kept waiting for it, and when it finally happened, I was not surprised. But damn —Ashley wrote that feeling (the fear, the tension, the waiting for the other shoe to drop) way too accurately. It hit deep because it was real.
I need to say this too— the return of Reid was written perfectly. Not over the top. Not dramatic for no reason. Just real, and scary, and exactly how men like that are. The anxiety of waiting for him, the moment he shows back up, the way it all goes down — yes. A thousand times yes. Perfect. 👌🏼
Ryan.
Oh my God, Ryan.🫠🫠🫠
The relationship between Harper and Ryan builds so naturally that I lost count of how many times I whispered, “just kiss already.” They’re like live magnets — you can literally feel the pull through the screen. It’s slow, but not frustrating slow. It’s like… intense slow. That kind that sits in your chest and does not move.
He shows up for her in a quiet way. Not loud, not pushy, not “I’m here whether you like it or not.” Just gentle, steady, “I’m here if you want me.” And the way he is with Connor? Yeah. That did it for me. He never uses Connor to get to Harper. He never crosses her lines. He never makes her feel small.
And when he gets that offer to coach the sled hockey team and they want him permanently, I was so proud of him it didn’t even feel like fiction anymore. The way he handled everything … 😮💨🫠🥹 I know I’m married but damn this man is mine too 🤍🫶🏼
And before I end this, I need to just say, Ashley… I need Nina and Shane’s book. Like, yesterday. I also need to know what really happened with Liam’s mom. And Kyle still deserves a full happy ending too — book please🤞🏼.
This book made me feel everything. I cried, I yelled “kiss already,” I panicked, I hoped, I healed a little with them.
5 stars. No questions asked — unless it is if we can make it a 6 because 😭 it’s worth a damn 10 ✨
🩷Almost Ours 🩷 Firstly,I want to thank LoveNotes PR & Ashley Parker for this amazing ARC!✨
Harper ran away. After leaving a years long abusive relationship,Harper managed to find home again in Brookhaven. She has a house,a job & is building an normal life for her son, while her own has to be on pause for a little bit.Until she meets Ryan & everything suddenly changes. Ryan has his own secrets. As an ex-NHL enforcer,Ryan tries to hide his tragic past while starting over in Brookheaven. However his new life is going to take an unexpected turn when Harper gets in & the connection is undeniable.
This was A MASTERPIECE. LITERALLY ANYTHING LESS THAN 5 STARS IS C R I M I N A L. But let's get things from the start. Almost ours is a life changing experience, yes not a story an EXPERIENCE,that will have you in the edge of your seat until you read that final word in the epilogue. Personally,I was HOOKED with the book since the first chapter which had me so invested,in order to understand what is going on.Continuing the story falling in love with most of the characters was inevitable,-my top one was Benny! This man made me laugh SO HARD & crave ALL of his pastries-!Also, all her plot twists were one of their kind 🤌🏻 Generally,I really liked that throughout the story,it was really pointed out the sense of community feeling in a small town. That everyone has your back had a major impact on the character development of our fmc Harper & the author wrote about it so beautifully! Speaking about Harper.Oh My God.HARPER THE WOMAN YOUR ARE. Reading about her is not like reading about the standard fmc.Our girl is a survivor,a mother & woman, and I can assure you she feels every role she is in. However, the characteristic that is more remarkable about her is how much she shines even after everything & believe me things are constantly happening!Even,my girl is as bright as the sun and thank god life treated her so well in the end that had me in tears!
I cannot not say about Connor,Harper's son,& how big impact he had on the story. As I have said in the past it is really important to have the child's perceptive in those stories, and Parker gave so much page time to Connor, with him having the chance to do exactly that.Plus,my sheila was so sweet and cute*big hugs C!
More, our mmc,Ryan was such a sweetheart too, always supporting Harper & being a wonderful dad to Connor!I loved his patience and care that had for his family & yes girls he is a HOTTIEE!
Lastly,I want to end with the romance, that was exactly what BOTH our main characters needed. It had care, love, patience, support, passion & it needed time. However,if Almost Ours teached me one thing is that sometimes needing time is not the bad version of the story, nor the end of the romance between two people. It's exactly what it should be in order to heal & work things out-okay a tear fell of my eye right now🥹.
I don't think I need to say how MUCH I recommend this book.Just for you to clear your calendars Almost Ours is out on 14th of November 🩷
🖤 First impressions: This novel grips you from the start — raw with emotion, tender in its hope, and driven by characters who aren’t just broken … they’re fighting to become whole.
🔍 What the story’s about: Harper has finally escaped a twelve-year abusive relationship and moved her and her ten-year-old son Connor to the small town of Brookhaven to rebuild their lives. She takes a job at the local bakery, determined to find safety and peace — romance is far from her mind.
Meanwhile, Ryan is hiding out in Brookhaven too. Former NHL enforcer, bruised by his past and convinced he doesn’t deserve anything good.
When these two meet, a slow-burn connection begins. Late-night confessions, small moments that build trust, the kind of relationship that’s not instant fireworks but a gradual healing.
Then the past comes crashing in — Harper’s past trauma, Ryan’s guilt, threats to the new life they’re building together. They must decide if love is worth risking their safety and their hearts.
📝 What I loved: The single-mom + sports-coach trope done with heart: Harper isn’t just the love interest, she’s a protector, survivor. Ryan sees more than just Harper — he sees her son Connor too, and their relationship felt deeply layered.
The small town, found family vibe: Brookhaven isn’t just background, it’s a character. Community, friendships, warm bakery treats, hockey-rink nights — it gives the story a cozy, lived-in feel.
The emotional depth: This isn’t fluff. Themes of domestic violence, mental health, trauma, trust, healing — they’re woven in thoughtfully.
Slow burn done right: The relationship grows steadily, there’s tension and pacing, you feel the stakes.
The kid angle: Connor adds so much — his relationship with Ryan, his own wary hope, makes the stakes higher.
Side characters shine: The “found family” circle has banter, warmth, humor — great for lightening heavy moments.
⚠️ Heads-up / what to consider: Trigger warnings: The book deals with domestic abuse, medical trauma/hospitalization, gun violence and mental health struggles.
The emotional weight: Because of the topics, it’s heavier than a simple “meet-cute” romance. Some chapters will tug at you, maybe even break your heart a little.
If you prefer super light, brisk romances with minimal conflict — this may lean more into “grown-up, real problems + healing” territory.
⭐ Overall: A powerful, heartfelt read. I’d give it 5 stars. If you like: slow-burn romance, sports/hockey themed love stories, a strong lead who’s a survivor, small-town feel, found family, and emotional depth — this one’s for you.
📖 Would I read it again / recommend? Yes! Definitely recommend. Especially to readers who want more than just “meet-cute & happy ending,” but a story of rebuilding, forgiveness, and second chances. Mark your calendars 🗓️ this comes out November 14.
Thanks to @lovenotes.pr and @authorashleyparker for letting me be an ARC.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If you would have asked me to describe Almost Ours, I would tell you that it was hands down one of the biggest emotional rollercoasters I have ever been on, but yet I would continually come back for more. There is zero chance that I would have known this was Ashley’s debut book, and I got lucky enough to BETA read it. This was hands down one of the EASIEST infinity stars I have ever given a book.
Harper’s story will tear you into a million pieces, it will make you angry and so broken just for her character. But it will also show you just how far of lengths a mom will go for her children! There is just something about the way Harper caries herself, and tries the very hardest to be the mom that Connor deserves that will just send you into a whole world of appreciation.
Ryan, oh my sweet Ryan. The sad, broken, living in grief and disappointment... I always say I love a broken, grumpy man.. but Ryan takes it to an entire new level. The amount of broken that Ryan brings... is truly just heartbreaking and misunderstood by so many. He takes his entire life flipping in the matter of moments with him as he is trying to move forward but he truly just can’t until he meets Harper.
These two are truly such a healing, beautiful story. It’s heartbreak, it’s misunderstanding, it’s protecting, it’s loving, it’s walking through the storms together - despite what may be thrown at you.
The friendships in this book will make you want to stay in Brookhaven forever. Between the bickering and giving each other shit between Shane and Nina, the trio of Ryan, Shane, and Kyle, and then none the less Harper and Nina. The best friend any girl could ask for. Also Connor and Liam - they truly bring all the light and happiness. You couldn't ask for more! But really who steals the entire show is Benny.. there is truly NO ONE like Benny and he deserves all of the love and appreciation. I felt like Ashley wrote this book with what everyone’s dream friends and community would look like because with all of these people involved. There is truly so much love and adoration from everyone. The support they show both Ryan and Harper through all of their struggles is obvious and truly such a joy to see in the depths of their sadness.
You could not tell me that this book did not require a million tissues and streaked makeup, because that is exactly what I looked like the entire time reading this. Tears in all of the ways-the good, the bad, the ugly-were everything I could have dreamed of. This book had so much depth and healing, it was a top 5 read for me this year.
I have to say this, Ashley Parker, I am SO proud of you! You did this. You wrote this. You absolutely knocked this book out of the park in every way possible. This book altered me forever. and I am already counting down for Book 2!
Ashley Parker's "Almost Ours" is a very sweet small-town romance where the FMC tries to put her life back together after years of abuse and ends up falling for someone she didn't see coming: her son's hockey coach. This book is entirely too long, but I think the payoff is ultimately worth it in the end. The slow-burning nature of the romance between Harper and Ryan kept me invested in reading from beginning to end. There are a few lulls in the story here and there, and with a little editing, I think this has the potential to be a big-time novel. Both Ryan and Harper have had traumas occur in their pasts, traumas that have shaped who they are as people now, shape how they see love, and threaten their future together. She was abused, and he has always felt like he was never good enough. They both have sky-high walls erected around their hearts, and as they slowly get to know one another and confess their feelings and secrets to each other, these walls come crumbling down the more they fall for each other. Despite his past career as an NHL enforcer (a beefy-manly-macho-job, to some), Ryan is kind and patient and accepting of Harper's past traumas. Harper has to learn that Ryan is worth trusting. They both have to realize that they are worth loving, just as they are, without preamble or second thought. They complement one another very well as characters. Ryan is not only falling for Harper, but also for her son, Connor, too. I adored their interactions together. Ryan and Connor are so sweet together! The snowball fights, teaching him slapshots, whatever it is, their interactions make this book worth reading. Ryan amps up Connor's self-esteem, which is something he knows he personally lacked growing up. For him to be that role model had me tearing up from time to time. I loved the found family aspect of this story. I love watching Harper and Connor grow in Brookhaven as they become the people they were always meant to be. I love watching Harper forge new bonds with friends, make acquaintances, and become accepted by the town. I also loved watching Ryan peek himself little by little out of his self-imposed shell, the more he wants to get to know Harper. Shane and Nina are riotous secondary characters. I hope we get a book about them! They provide some much-needed banter in and amongst the drama-heavy story of Harper and Ryan. I also loved Benny, the owner of the bakery where Harper gets a job early in the book. Great secondary characters all around! As I said, this book is way too long. I feel like at least a hundred pages could have been trimmed from this book, and the same sentiments would be there. Still, I did enjoy reading this one!
Thank you to Ashley Parker and Luna Literary for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
Thank you to Love Notes PR and Ashley Parker for sending me an ARC of this book!
Almost Ours by Ashley Parker is a small-town hockey romance that hits harder than expected. It revolves around Harper and Ryan... two individuals who have both been shaped by pasts that left lasting marks. I was immediately drawn into their dynamic, finding this to be an incredibly touching and emotional read about healing and finding safety in unexpected places.
Harper arrives in town desperate for a fresh start, on the run from an abusive ex-boyfriend—the father of her child. She is focused on survival and protecting her child, definitely not on romance. Enter Ryan, a former NHL player turned local hockey coach (alongside his charming best friend, Shane). When Harper’s guarded world collides with Ryan’s established small-town life, they both have to decide if they are brave enough to let their walls down again.
Given Harper's traumatic background, the strength of this book is how beautifully the author handles her healing journey. Ryan is the perfect hero for this situation. He is patient, protective, and understands that trust has to be earned, making their chemistry a delicious slow burn built on a foundation of safety. What I particularly admired about Harper was her incredible bravery and unwavering dedication to her son, Connor; every decision she made was filtered through her desire to protect him. Beyond the main couple, I absolutely loved how the people in town truly came together to create a supportive, found family for Harper and Connor, adding so much warmth to the story.
While I absolutely loved this story, there were moments where both Harper and Ryan’s internal struggles, though understandable, could be a bit frustrating. Harper’s skittishness and reluctance to trust, especially when she discovered the reasons behind Ryan's departure from the NHL, sometimes made me wish she had been more willing to hear him out. Similarly, Ryan's tendency to blame himself for what happened to his friend, Kyle, occasionally felt like a hurdle he struggled to overcome. However, these very human flaws ultimately made their individual growth and their journey together feel even more impactful and realistic.
Overall, Almost Ours is a heartwarming, and sometimes heartbreaking, romance that I highly recommend. It's perfect for readers who enjoy small-town settings, protective heroes who go above and beyond, and stories that deal with serious themes with care and emotional honesty. If you love tropes featuring strong single mothers and heroes who heal, this book is a must-read.
Almost Ours By: Ashley Parker Book 1 in the Brookhaven Series
5 ⭐️
❄️Small town 🏒hockey coach ❄️single mom 🏒found family ❄️slow burn 🏒domestic violence survivor ❄️healing romance
This was my first Ashley Parker read and let me tell you it did not disappoint! Almost Ours the first book in the new series Brookhaven follows the story of Harper and Ryan. Both Harper and Ryan have broken paths, and those broken paths found one another. Both of their lives have been shaped by this crazy past that they are both trying hard to forget, to leave it just there in the past. Harper is such a devoted single mom, who loves her son Connor so much and who will stop at nothing to protect him. She is very relatable, always thinking of what is going to come next, or what she needs to do to make sure that dinner gets put on the table for her child, not so much for herself but always for Connor. It brought tears to my eyes because as mom, we can relate to her and the struggle that she is going through, and it warms my heart so much that these are the sacrifices she makes to make sure that her child is safe.
Harper is very guarded, and she has so many walls up due to her past….enter Ryan - tall, dark and handsome. He walks in and slowly he starts to chip away at those walls and when they come down, boy do they come down. Ryan also has a past that keeps haunting him and both him and Harper are these two imperfect pieces that fit perfectly. The relationship that Ryan has with Connor, the interaction between them is amazing, you can see that he truly cares for him, that he cares for them both. Both Harper and Ryan learn to heal with one another, turning into such a beautiful, second chance story. It was a little bit of a slow burn but I was along for the ride and loved every minute of it!
This was such a great read, I loved the story, the characters, the little town of Brookhaven, the people in town….I LOVED all of it! Loved the friendship dynamic between Harper and Nina, Connor and Liam, Ryan and Shane. I smiled at times, I laughed at times and I even cried a little. If this is not on your TBR list, it needs to be I promise you that it will not disappointed. ✨Please check your trigger warnings.✨ Thank you to author Ashley Parker and Love Notes PR for this opportunity to read this eARC. Almost Ours releasing November 14, 2025
Almost Ours is the debut novel from Ashley Parker and the start of a brand new small town hockey series. This book is over 500 pages and honestly I wish it was longer because I simply was not ready to leave Harper and Ryan's romance behind. I could have read another 500 pages and more about the two of them together.
I thought this was a really well written and well rounded book. There was a lot of light-hearted and fun moments with family and friends but it also touched on more serious topics. I thought the balance of both elements was perfect.
Harper is such an amazing FMC. She is so brave and she is such a good Mom. I completely understood her hesitancy and trust issues when it came to Ryan. She had to put herself and her son first and it took her a while to lower her guard. Watching her flourish in her new environment and was so heartwarming as she deserved all of the love that now surrounded her.
I absolutely adored Ryan! I enjoyed how there was a bit of mystery surrounding what had happened in his past. It took a while for the readers to get the full picture and by the end of it I was left feeling so sad for both Ryan and the other person involved. A lot of his self-worth is tied to that incident and there's definitely a lot of unresolved trauma there, which he works through over the course of the book. I loved that, no matter what, Ryan was there for Harper and Connor in anyway that he could be. He really showed them what it was like to have a reliable, loving presence in their life.
Also, poor Connor. That boy was put through it !!! He was such a sweet kid and I wanted to just wrap him in bubble wrap and protect him from everything. There was some amazing bonding moments between him and Ryan some of which had me at the end of my seat!
I also really enjoyed learning a bit more about sledge hockey. I had never heard of it before reading this book and I really liked how natural its inclusion was.
Thank you so much to Harper and Love Notes PR for the chance to read this ARC! I cannot return wait to return to Brookhaven unfollow the rest of the gang on their journey HEA!
This romance has some meat on its bones. Ashley Parker dealt with some very heavy topics in her debut novel, Almost Ours. Book 1 in her Brookhaven series, she dove right into her writing journey and I am a fan! Two people starting over, both finding a home in the small town of Brookhaven. Another beautiful reminder that not all heroes wear capes and not all scars are visible. I lost sleep while reading this book because I couldn’t put it down.
Harper has finally taken back her life. Years of an abusive relationship left her broken, but she didn’t let that take away her fight. Having to provide a better life for her son, she does everything she can to do just that. She found safety in Brookhaven, but put her own selfcare on pause, while she created a safe home for her son. I am in awe of how eloquently Harper is written. She has a quiet strength about her that deserves to be seen and celebrated. She is an amazing mom and deserves all the happiness the world has to offer.
Ryan ran from his tragic past and NHL career. He too found solace in Brookhaven, taking his talent with hockey and coaching the young people in town. He is just what Harper and Connor need, but lets the relationship with each of them unfold on their timing. He never pushes Harper for anything that she isn’t ready for, all while making her feel seen the way she deserves to be seen. This man found the pieces that Harper needed help filling and just filled them. He seamlessly fits into their lives, but makes a huge impact.
Ashley writes a beautiful story of healing, surviving, and romance. The romance is heartfelt and the healing these two provide each other is soul deep. I am ready for more of this series and Ashley’s writing. She has solidified herself in my book as an amazing author. Being able to take on some deep topics, while balancing the romance and laughter, takes talent. She is an author that I will be impatiently waiting for her next release and until then be thinking of Harper and Ryan nonstop.
As always, review any author notes before reading.

ARC Review — Thank you so much to Ashley and the team at LoveNotes PR for letting me be part of this ARC Team! 💕
Almost Ours is one of those small-town romances that wraps you up in warmth, healing, and the kind of found family that makes your heart ache in the best way. Harper and Ryan are two characters shaped by painful pasts, and that depth makes their connection feel incredibly real.
Harper is fierce, tender, and unwavering in her devotion to her son. She’s survived more than most, and watching her rebuild her life piece by piece was both emotional and empowering. Ryan—our soft, quietly haunted ex-NHL enforcer turned kids’ hockey coach—slowly chips away at her walls with patience, kindness, and so much heart. The cozy winter vibes and the rinkside moments? Absolute perfection. ❄️🏒
Ryan and Connor’s relationship melted me into a puddle. Every scene with them glowed with softness, showing that Ryan wasn’t just falling for Harper… he was choosing her little boy too. And the found family element? So full of laughter and belonging that it added an extra layer of comfort to the entire story.
I really hope we get a Shane and Nina spinoff because those two deserve their own book! 🤞🏼
My only very small critique is that the conflict landed a bit close to the end, and I felt myself anxiously waiting for the resolution. But even then, the payoff was sweet, heartfelt, and so worth it.
As a debut, Ashley absolutely nailed it. Brookhaven felt like a real place—warm, imperfect, and full of love—and these characters felt like people you’d want in your own circle. The chemistry between Harper and Ryan is gentle but powerful, and the way Ryan treats Connor? Instant swoon. 💙
Favorite Quotes: • "Damn unicorn in flannel.” • “A hot weirdo.” • “You don’t have to walk through any more storms alone.”
If you love small-town charm, slow-burn sparks, single-mom sweetness, healing romance, and a big dose of found family, this one absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR.
✨ Releases Nov. 14th — don’t miss this cozy, heart-mending read. 🩷❄️
For this being a debut novel and my first experience with Ashley Parker I have to admit I’m extremely impressed. However, this is one of those moments where even though I’m impressed it wasn’t completely perfect. I wish Goodreads allowed .5 star ratings but because they don’t I went ahead and rounded up to 4⭐️ because I see what Ashley is building with the town of Brookehaven and I’m excited to see it continue to grow and develop.
First, let’s start with that I loved about Almost Ours. - I loved the small town found family vibes. Harper & Connor needed that so much after everything they’ve endured. I loved that no one hesitated to immediately welcome them with open arms. Every single side character from Benny, Nina, Kyle and Shane shined and I can’t wait to see their stories fleshed out as the series continues.
-The Romance! Harper & Ryan are electric. They’ve both got things in their past that haunt them. But watching them work through those traumas was healing to witness. - The Epilogue! I think I could gush a whole paragraph on that epilogue. It was seriously everything I could’ve wanted and more. I promise I won’t actually write a full paragraph because I don’t want to spoil anything. But just know it was pure perfection.
Now let’s talk about my Cons. - The book length was a big one. Causing some pacing issues especially in the beginning. Some scenes were really slow and I think we could’ve trimmed some out. - My last major was one is our third act conflict. It ultimately boils down to lack of communication. Which is frustrating because if we would’ve both grown a pair this wouldn’t have happened. Now don’t get me wrong I understand Harper’s overall reasons. But girl if your friends, coworkers and heck the whole freaking town is still in favor of your man then you need to reevaluate faster.
Overall, this was a great debut and I’m excited to see what this author does next. I also 100% recommend this book to anyone looking for their next romance read. Lastly big thank you to Love Notes PR for providing me an ARC to read and review
Okay, let’s talk about this book because I am STILL not over it.
First of all… RYAN. This boy spent the entire book dragging himself through the mud for things he didn’t deserve, and for WHAT?? He is the softest, sweetest, most loyal man alive. I just wanted to wrap him in a blanket and tell him everything’s going to be okay. The way he loves? The way he tries? I was screaming, crying, kicking my feet.
And then we have Harper. Listen—I adore her, I really do. But girl. The moment she heard something from the outside world and jumped to the worst conclusion about Ryan? I was internally combusting. She never let him get a full explanation out, just shut it all down instantly. I get that her past left her with major trust issues, but watching her assume the worst when Ryan is literally the softest man alive had me clawing at the pages. The tension? The frustration? The emotional chaos? Top-tier.
Now… Ryan and Connor. This relationship was EVERYTHING. There was never a single moment where Ryan treated Connor as anything other than his own kid. His protectiveness, his patience, the way he showed up without hesitation—it was exactly what Connor needed and it melted my entire soul. Every scene with them had me soft-smiling like an idiot.
And shoutout to the side characters, because they were actually characters, not random extras thrown in just for show. Every single one added something—the humor, the heart, the chaos—and it made the world feel so full and real.
Final thoughts: This book gave me all the feels—frustration, heartbreak, warmth, and those soft little moments that stay with you. Ryan alone is worth the emotional damage.
If you love messy healing, characters who make you want to scream and hug them at the same time, and found-family vibes… this one’s for you. 💛📖✨

My Ratings: 3.7-4 Stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Harper, i would say she was such a strong character, Or should i say strong mom Who's rebuilding her life after years of surviving. Ryan? The broody, Yet gentle and patient character. He have my heart, He was such a patient man, loved the way he loved Harper. And Connor he was a such a sweet child who made me laugh but also shed tears too at probably at a point. Coming back to Harper and Ryan and their love. Their love was slow, yet gentle. The healing journey was heartbreaking and i wanted to give both of them hugs. But it also was very beautiful. I absolutely loved how the book handled sensitive topic and as a debut novel it was really good! It would have been a 5 stars but i think the book was bit too long... Overall as a debut it was really good and i absolutely loved the story and the character and the story was absolutely beautiful! And oh i forget to mention about how much i loved the found Family vibes in the book and how much i adored Ryan and Connors Dynamics.
And not too mention the side characters Shane and Nina!! cause i absolutely loved them too xD I Love Love Love their banter. Hope they get a spin off
Thank you so much @authorashleyparker and @lovenotes.pr for the opportunity for Arc!
Spoiler maybe?
Fav Quotes: -"I Love you, Harper" -"I Love Connor like he's my own son. I want to spend the rest of my life making you both happy, being there for you, building a life together" -"He's good with Connor. Constant. Reliable." -"The Quiet way he looked at me, like i was more than my past, like i was worth protecting, worth loving" -"I held her because i needed to because this woman and that kid had become my whole damn world"
𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 – Almost Ours has been such an emotionally rich slow burn. The chemistry between the lead characters is undeniable. The supporting characters add warmth and depth, and the small-town energy makes the whole story complete. Ashley Parker does a phenomenal job at navigating the very sensitive topic of domestic violence (read the trigger warnings!). There is so much depth and complexity to Harper’s history that is beautifully told. She is a fearless mother, doing everything she can to protect herself and her son. I love how her relationship with Ryan unfolds. Ryan is such a good partner, which is just what Harper needs after what she’s been through. There were so many emotional plot twists between Harper, Connor and Ryan that put my heart through the wringer!
𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬 – I do have a couple let downs from Almost Ours. Mainly, how lengthy the whole book is. It absolutely did not need to be as long as it was. There were definitely times that felt drawn out and unnecessary. I also think Harper way overreacted to Ryan’s “lie”. He didn’t even lie; he just wasn’t sure how to tell her his trauma. The buildup of Ryan’s backstory was way to dramatic for what it really ended up being. It was a tad unrealistic that that is what he left the NHL over. Also, the fact that Harper had never heard of him or the huge headlines that he caused, yet she and her son are so big into hockey just seemed like a plot hole that got overlooked.
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 – I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to read Almost Ours! It is such a hauntingly beautiful, traumatic, whirl wind of a story that kept me enticed throughout. This is Ashley Parkers debut book and I look forward to what comes next in the Brookhaven series! There was a lot of buildup for a Shane and Nina story that I’m very excited for!
💜 Blurb - Harper never thought she’d escape. ❤️ Review - I have been loving all the hockey, sports romance novels that are around at the moment and Almost Ours certainly didn't disappoint. This was such a cute read. The story was cute and easy to follow and had a great cast of characters. I loved Harper and Ryan's chemistry and I wanted them to have the happy ending that they deserved. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author. 💝 Thank you to the author Ashley Parker and Love Notes PR for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
