Cute little folk tale about 'honesty' for children (as adult can guess it easily).
Illustrations are really sooooo adorable that even adult would love them. 😍😍

This was an interesting folk tale. I feel even though this was an interesting folk tale it was a cute one with a good lesson. I love how the author used characters to make this story come alive. I also really love the illustrations. I feel as though these helped tell the moral of the story.

I liked this book because it shows the kids that honesty is very important and it shows ways in which you can be honest and what happens when you are not honest. I find it important for kids to know how to be honest so they can set an example for other students their age.

I really loved the illustrations on this one, but the moral of the story went write over my head haha. I’m autistic, so the moral of the story went completely over my head until it was explained at the end.

Amazing story!

My 7 year old daughter read this book in school and was really impressed and intrigued by the story and pictures. She had me find it so she could read it to me at home because she loved it so much. She loved that it had a moral to the story about honesty.

I love the illustrations and the moral in this book. Although Cheng was upset that his plant was the only one that wasn't growing, it paid off for him in the end because no one's plant was meant to grow. This definitely shows that an honest person is way better than a person who cheats.

Title: The Empty Pot
Author: Charlotte Guillain
Illustrator: Steve Dorado
Genre: Non-European folktale
Theme(s): China, Honesty, Folktale

Opening line/sentence:

Everyone in the Kingdom loved flowers too.

Brief Book Summary:

The Empty pot is a Chinese folktale about a young boy named Ping. All of the children were given seeds to grow and Ping’s seeds would not grow but he submitted his empty pot in the contest with all of the other seeds. Ping was rewarded for his honestly.

Professional Recommendation/Review #1:

• Horn Book Guide
(2) K-3 series. In a satisfying, accessible tale, all the children of the land are given seeds to grow for the old emperor; unbeknownst to them the seeds are incapable of germinating. Ping is chosen to be the next emperor when he is the only one who has the courage to come before the ruler with an empty pot. The story, gracefully and sparely told, is accompanied by delicately detailed artwork

Professional Recommendation/Review #2:
• Kirkus Reivews
Ping is a fine gardener; but when the Chinese Emperor announces an unusual test to choose an heir--the child who raises the best flowers from a seed given by the Emperor will be his successor--then Ping, unaccountably, is unable to get his seed to sprout. Grieving but knowing he's done his best, he reports back with the other children, all of whom have gorgeous plants. But Ping's empty pot is best of all: the Emperor cooked the seeds before distributing them, hoping thereby to discover an honest person. Demi's characteristic delicate illustrations are at their most exquisite here, floating in bubble shapes on a soft green ground. A lovely story well told and most attractively presented.

Response to Two Professional Reviews:

Both of the professional reviews mention the moving story that is created in the folktale. They both thought the illustrations were the best part of the children’s book, the visuals were so unique and detailed.

Evaluation of Literary Elements:

The illustrations are so intricate and beautiful. The colors create a relaxing and peaceful read. The plain background and the pictures confined the circle creates a world for the story. Each circle provides a little piece of the story world. The rhyming words allow the students to flow through the folktale.

Consideration of Instructional Application:

This book is perfect for multicultural integration. The students have an opportunity to read stories written from the perspective of a different culture. A lesson that could follow this book could be to ask the students to find a folk tale about a different culture and research information about the culture. The students could present their findings with a creative project.
