The ultimate (unofficial) Survivor book forfans from the contestant-turned-host of Rob Has a Podcast.
Rob Cesternino has probably talked more Survivor than any other person on the planet. After playing in Survivor: The Amazon and All-Stars, Rob built a community amongst Survivor’s online fans with Rob Has a Podcast. Now, this foremost scholar of the show takes readers from the beaches of Borneo on the first season all the way to the landmark fiftieth season. This beautifully illustrated ode to the show includes “The Heroes and Villains Hall of Fame,” the greatest “Watercooler Watershed Moments” in the show’s history, and Rob’s “Ultimate Survivor Playbook” (no refunds) to winning that million-dollar prize.
Whether you’re a superfan or a first timer, The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a must-read celebration for anyone who counts themselves as part of this passionate tribe of fans from around the world.
Rob Cesternino, the two-time Survivor player referred to by Jeff Probst as “the smartest player never to win Survivor,” is the creator and host of Rob Has a Podcast. Since 2010, Rob has covered reality TV shows such as Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, and more. The show has won five People’s Choice Podcast Awards. Rob is a proud husband, father of two, and friend to thousands in the RHAP community.
This may be the only time I write a rave 10/5 star review for a book and then go on to say it’s not for everyone, and I think @robcesternino would agree and endorse the review 🤣🤩 this book, as a super fan of Survivor, is EVERYTHING. Not to brag, but I got every reference, from easiest / most well known (sorry @dabudoodles but you are incredibly well known) to the most obscure “cmon Reed!” moments. I cackled. Like genuinely was laughing out loud as I read it and had to share the comedic bits with my husband, a fellow super fan, who hasn’t read a book in years but is dying to borrow this one. Any fan of Survivor, who understands the lore, desperately needs this book. It is a pure joy to read if you know the game inside and out. But, if you’re like “yeah I watched Borneo when it came out”, this isn’t the book for you. It would go right over your head. But to the RHAP listeners, the super fans, the ones who have been personally victimized by production and the winner’s edits… this book is absolutely, undoubtedly for you. A huge thanks to @atriabooks for my early ARC; it was a treat to finish reading on the day Rob premieres on THE TRAITORS! ⚔️ is anyone else planning to watch tonight? I wouldn’t miss it! #thetribeandihavespoken #rhap #survivor #survivorcbs #robcesternino
The audiobook is performed by Rob Cesternino with the foreword by Stephen Fishbach.
Rob is a former Survivor contestant who has dedicated his life to championing and podcasting about Survivor.
I love competitive reality shows and I love strategy. I am a big Rob Has A Podcast/ RHAP fan and a big Survivor fan. So I was very excited to read this book.
I am obsessed that Stephen Fishbach did the foreword. And so happy that Rob is the audiobook performer on his own book.
This is a fun look at the show. It is part memoir and part how to guide. It showcases Rob’s experience on Survivor, his advice and his knowledge. The audiobook is very humorous and includes impressions of many Survivor players.
He goes through the gameplay of lots of the players, which I loved. And he goes through the different eras of the show. I enjoyed the discussion about strategy.
Chapter 6 discusses gameplay advice for people applying to be on the show. I love his chapter of advice, how to win and what to do in various situations. This is the ultimate Survivor playbook.
My favorite part of the book is Chapter 8. It is about his Survivor experience. It details everything about his experience on Survivor as well as the casting process. I also loved learning more about the beginning of RHAP.
I liked also having the ebook so that I could read along and see the illustrations.
Is this book for superfans, casual fans or people who haven’t watched the show? I definitely think that fans of Survivor will love this book. It is informative and it is so fun to look back at so many seasons and see discussions about favorite players. There are spoilers for past seasons. But I do think that this book would be a great resource for anyone who wants to go on the show or just learn more about Survivor’s history. Overall this book is a wonderful book.
Thanks to libro.fm and Simon Audio for the Audiobook
This one’s only going to appeal to die hard survivor fans (aka me) but I loved it!!! Listened on audio and read this so quick. Loved all the lore and inside scoop on how things go!
A great book for Survivor fans! I listen to Rob’s podcasts after Survivor every week. This book was a great look at Survivor and how it has evolved through the years. Rob also touches on his own personal experiences playing.
All in all, a great read if you are a survivor fan!
Great walk through survivor history and interesting behind the scenes on Rob’s life. Good read for a survivor fan. Casts a wider net than it does a deep net like some other survivor books do, but still solid
thank you rob for not only creating the best podcast community in the world, but for being the first book i’ve finished in basically a month thanks to a grueling reading slump <3
Now this is what the Jeff Probst "Forged By Fire" 50 Season 25th year anniversary book should've been. No stone left unturned. A complete, detailed, self aware and unbiased history of the greatest and oldest reality tv game show on earth.
The how to win Survivor portion maybe was filler. (Especially seeing you didnt win Rob haha) But I'm still happy it was there.
Wonderful illustrations throughout by Sam Bond.
I look forward to part two in 25 years and 50 more seasons time Rob. (And hopefully at least one more return to the game from you)
So anyone who knows me knows that it goes without saying that I am a huge Survivor and RHAP fan. So obviously, I was very stoked when I learned about the existence of this book. As much as I love podcasts, I have always preferred the written medium so it felt like this book was made just for me.
If you are a listener of RHAP then you know that Rob Cesternino is the Survivor historian so who better than him to write the definitive guide to the show. I will say that this book is not for the casuals. It is chock full of spoilers, history, references, and inside jokes that only someone who has watched Survivor in its entirety will understand and appreciate. It truly is a love letter to the Survivor superfan.
Even though I have clocked in hours listening to Cesternino analyze the game, I still found myself intrigued by the insights into the game that he outlines in this book. I would imagine this would be the perfect book to read if you are preparing to go play the game yourself. Cesternino provides unique insight into the game as a past player himself as well as a superfan.
You can see the passion Cesternino has for this show through his reverent writing. He clearly knows his stuff. Just like his television persona he brings a sense of wittiness and humor into his writing that makes the experience of reading this book a joyful romp. I especially enjoyed his analysis of all the big players to ever be on the show.
Well, if you’re reading this review at all it probably means you are a Survivor fan, and if that’s the case, run, don't walk to your nearest book store to pick this one up. It was made for you. Thanks to Rob for writing a book made for and by the superfan.
Thank you to NetGalley & Atria Books for the eARC!
Listened to this one only. A very cool look at the show by someone who you can immediately tell, knows a whole lot. As a fan of the show with no interest of going my favorite parts were definitely the history chapters going through big moments and characters. Even though I’ll never put the tips to use myself, I look forward to looking out for the strategies and Easter egg phrases from the advice chapters as I watch future seasons. Honestly I’m glad I decided to listen to this one instead of read because Cesternino is a big survivor character himself so I enjoyed being able to hear his reading and personality and don’t think it would have been quite as interesting reading it silently to myself (though still worth a read!).
We love Rob Cesternino and Survivor SO MUCH here!!! This was a such a fun read as a look back through the history of survivor and the history of Rob has a Podcast. I loved how much of Rob’s personality shined through the page. Reading this felt just the same as listening to Rob on the podcast. I was giggling all through the inside jokes and references Rob made in the book. He really makes us long time die hard listeners feel welcomed
I got this book at the RHAP Survivor 50 event in NYC and I got to meet Rob’s brother Danny randomly at a restaurant before the show. Just wanted to flex.
Though I am a from the womb Survivor fan I haven’t ever listened to Rob’s podcast. I saw he wrote a book about Survivor and naturally I decided of course I have to read that.
This was such a fun look back at so many Survivor legends and seasons I can only remember snippets of and audio book was so engaging.
My only wish is that he had of talked more on some of the newer seasons and analyzed some of those players.
Overall if you’re a Survivor fan this is definitely a book I would recommend.
I spend about 4 hours of each waking day thinking about or actively consuming survivor-based content. And Rob Cesternino and RHAP is at the center of that. I appreciate this book as it is — a retrospective of the development of the game. At the end of the day, it’s more of a table book for me — great gift for a superfan. It felt a little surface level at moments but it’s hard to assess that, when again, I spend 4 hours of each waking day on survivor. 4 stars but not a wide spread recommend
As someone who found RHAP through twitter during HvV, I’m so proud of what Rob has accomplished! I could listen to this book over and over again (and probably will). If you like Survivor (and Survivor history) this is a book you can’t miss. Loved the mix of Survivor history & the journey to RHAP.
Tough to rank because I’m uncertain about the target audience. I assumed it was super fans but a good half of the book felt like basic recaps of big characters and moments from the show, which super fans would presumably know. Maybe it’s for his podcast cult (of which I dabble but I ain’t fully freaky like that) but I feel like they would know this information already too? Idk. Theres some chapters I enjoyed, like the starting section about the inception of survivor and reality tv, but then he ends with a memoir section about how his podcast started and the book just never clicked or became fully cohesive. Idk!!! I think I’d be most interested in critical essays and that wasn’t this. I SAID I DONT KNOW!
I love Rob the PODfather . I love survivor. It is my soul and my life blood. This book made me chuckle and I love all the Easter eggs for the real ones.
We have fun, don’t we!!! Loved going down survivor memory lane. I did skip the part about what to do to get on survivor etc bc I get a migraine if I skip breakfast so you will not see me there
This book was absolutely my favorite Survivor 🌴 book I’ve ever read. It’s celebrated the show in a way nothing ever has before. It gave kudos to memorable moments, underrated players and the fans who have been loyal to both RHAP and the show itself. Of course, the book tracked Rob’s journey through his two seasons and almost 3rd appearance on the show he discussed his anticipation before getting on the island, the trials that he dealt with on the island and the aftermath of both of his seasons. He celebrated big wins like meeting his wife because of Survivor but he also in this book touched on the devastating loss of his father after having a meaningful conversation with him. Rob took the time to give tips and tricks for every single part of the casting process how to make a video, what to do at your first mat chat, how to maneuver through the mergeatory, how to make an appearance at final tribal and how to deal with the post game press. Rob spent entire sections of the book talking about moments that shaped the game forever, but then other sections he spoke about players who shaped the game he analyzed great strategies and strategies that left more to be desired. He even analysis on the new era and he talked about moments from his guy like Cirie’s balance, being maybe being an overrated moment.
Survivor is obviously a huge part of my life and has been since it’s first started airing. I love that. I’ve watched every single episode and never miss the season. Even Rob admitted to taking some time off so I have him beat there but to watch a master spend hours and years discussing the show building a whole community pulling people together and hosting events for other fans like me so I can go and gain some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. It’s truly remarkable.
This book is not just the testament to the show, but it truly stands for all of the parts that make this fandom so unique. This is the first show of its kind and it reshaped the way America watched TV. Of course, I only listen to audiobook, and while some of the impressions were cringe, the quotes were such a blast from the past. I will absolutely be buying the physical book and adding it to my Survivor shrine because this might be one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. Period. Thank you, Rob! thank you! thank you!
This was such a great read (listen)!! I would classify myself as an OG longtime watching survivor fan. I've watched every season on cable since it came out 25 years ago. Watched it with my husband, and then all as a family when the kids were growing up, and now back just hubby and I. It's really the only show I still watch on network TV.
I would not say I am a super fan...at all. (I've never read a blog or listened to a podcast about survivor (although I might have to check out the author's it sounds great) I would NEVER consider going on this show,(there is a dedicated section in this book with tips on how to do your application video) but I love to be a spectator. I usually remember 1 or 2 of the most memorable characters from each season.(all time favorite is Boston Rob) About 50% of the time I remember who the winner was each season and I actually had to google who this author was (sorry the other Rob).
This book had a great set up. I enjoyed the recaps of some of the major moments and the insight and extra behind the scenes info was great for me....as I don't follow any extra stuff outside of the show so it was all news to me!! It's a long book for the content with a lot of meat to it!! I think a lot of planning went in to all the info included. It wasn't just a - now I'm famous I can write a book and give my take. I think it was true expert survivor knowledge on all the seasons! definitely read if you are a fan of the show! I also think it's a bonus that this just came out so it's super up to date and season 50 ended so that is all fresh in the mind too. So if it interests you now is the time!
My first experience listening to RHAP was a cast preview podcast for BB19. While that season may have sucked, it was made better by having the RHAP podcasts to supplement it along the way.
Rob really has built something so special with his podcast empire. I've listened to an insurmountable amount of hours over the past 9 years. It was an honor getting to attend my first RHAP event in NYC just last month. The energy in that room during the Survivor 50 episode we watched was amazing. Just picture, 1500 people bursting into cheers as their favorite character pops up in the intro and booing when their least favorite shows up.
Survivor fans are some of the most passionate people out there, Rob being one of them. My favorite parts of the book were honestly the ones where he told his full story with the show. This silly little show is so important to his life, and it's really important to me too. Hell, I quite literally found the love of my life through Survivor!
Seeing a book like this come from someone who is truly even more of a fan than I am made for a phenomenal read. Very proud of Rob for putting this out there and I absolutely identified with him more than I ever have.
Thanks to Atria Books for my early copy for review!
I first encountered Survivor maybe 12 years ago? Which, at this point in time (season 50 is about to wrap up!), puts me at entering my Jeff Probst era halfway through its run and I was instantly hooked.
Rob Cesternino very much wrote this book for the big Survivor fans. His hot takes and deep knowledge of the show really shone through, and his love for the game and what it did for reality tv was beautiful to see on the page!
He highlights his own personal journeys as well as the gameplay of some of the legends. This book very much felt like a walk down memory lane with Rob adding in extra analysis along the way!
I highly recommend this read for anyone who finds themselves mouthing along to Jeff's lines throughout each episode!
Thank you so much to Rob, Atria Books, and NetGalley for sending me an advanced e-copy of this book. I am so honored. I’m a RHAP fan so to get my hands on this early was amazing. I loved it! I loved the setup and organization of this book. Some of the chapters included short vignettes about the players or memorable moments throughout the show, and some were longer chapters. I teared up at the end knowing we did not get our podfather on Season 50 or a previous returnee season, but also appreciating everything that he has achieved to this day by following his path! Again thank you so much and can’t wait to continue to listed to RHAP!!🩷
Rob Cesternino is one of many Survivor legends who never won the game. He turned his passion of the show into a successful podcast, dissecting the game, the players, and the masterful moves each season. In this book, Rob talks through the history of the legends, how Jeff Probst went from host on the sidelines to being immersed in the game, and how hopefuls out there can prepare to be on the show if ever selected.
This was a fun one for me, as someone who has been in the process of watching Survivor 1-50 in order for the first time. I’m currently on season 41, so I definitely had to cover my eyes and ears for parts of this book. I strongly recommend an immersive read for this one for a few reasons: 1.) Rob narrates the book, and as a podcaster, not only does he have the perfect voice for it, but he’s also hilarious. It really elevated my experience. 2.) The illustrator did an amazing job, and I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to enjoy the graphics throughout. I learned so much, and enjoyed getting more insight to one of my current passions. Like David, I hate being outside - but maybe one day, I’ll want to play Survivor, and this book will help me do that. Yes Rob, I’ll use your code phrase when I do.
A must-read for any Survivor fan. Chapters 6 and 7, though, made me seriously reconsider my thought of applying, and echoed Jeff Probst's notion that the game is basically impossible to win.
Rob's quips throughout the book were funny, and I enjoyed how he interspersed his own experiences and perspectives along the way. He did a great job of looking back on 25 years of the show, highlighting how it has evolved while sharing some behind-the-scenes insight. An entertaining read for any Survivor fan!
It was interesting to read about the history of Survivor and various players from seasons I haven't watched. But I also spent a good portion of the audiobook being annoyed with Rob. It sounded like he was stomping his feet like a child who didn't get their way when he talked about wanting to talk about the game of Survivor in his confessionals, even though production kept shutting him down about it. Then he seemingly got jealous when he talked about the new era players being able to talk about it.
