The ultimate (unofficial) Survivor book forfans from the contestant-turned-host of Rob Has a Podcast.
Rob Cesternino has probably talked more Survivor than any other person on the planet. After playing in Survivor: The Amazon and All-Stars, Rob built a community amongst Survivor’s online fans with Rob Has a Podcast. Now, this foremost scholar of the show takes readers from the beaches of Borneo on the first season all the way to the landmark fiftieth season. This beautifully illustrated ode to the show includes “The Heroes and Villains Hall of Fame,” the greatest “Watercooler Watershed Moments” in the show’s history, and Rob’s “Ultimate Survivor Playbook” (no refunds) to winning that million-dollar prize.
Whether you’re a superfan or a first timer, The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a must-read celebration for anyone who counts themselves as part of this passionate tribe of fans from around the world.
Rob Cesternino, the two-time Survivor player referred to by Jeff Probst as “the smartest player never to win Survivor,” is the creator and host of Rob Has a Podcast. Since 2010, Rob has covered reality TV shows such as Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, and more. The show has won five People’s Choice Podcast Awards. Rob is a proud husband, father of two, and friend to thousands in the RHAP community.
The audiobook is performed by Rob Cesternino with the foreword by Stephen Fishbach.
Rob is a former Survivor contestant who has dedicated his life to championing and podcasting about Survivor.
I love competitive reality shows and I love strategy. I am a big Rob Has A Podcast/ RHAP fan and a big Survivor fan. So I was very excited to read this book.
I am obsessed that Stephen Fishbach did the foreword. And so happy that Rob is the audiobook performer on his own book.
This is a fun look at the show. It is part memoir and part how to guide. It showcases Rob’s experience on Survivor, his advice and his knowledge. The audiobook is very humorous and includes impressions of many Survivor players.
He goes through the gameplay of lots of the players, which I loved. And he goes through the different eras of the show. I enjoyed the discussion about strategy.
Chapter 6 discusses gameplay advice for people applying to be on the show. I love his chapter of advice, how to win and what to do in various situations. This is the ultimate Survivor playbook.
My favorite part of the book is Chapter 8. It is about his Survivor experience. It details everything about his experience on Survivor as well as the casting process. I also loved learning more about the beginning of RHAP.
I liked also having the ebook so that I could read along and see the illustrations.
Is this book for superfans, casual fans or people who haven’t watched the show? I definitely think that fans of Survivor will love this book. It is informative and it is so fun to look back at so many seasons and see discussions about favorite players. There are spoilers for past seasons. But I do think that this book would be a great resource for anyone who wants to go on the show or just learn more about Survivor’s history. Overall this book is a wonderful book.
Thanks to libro.fm and Simon Audio for the Audiobook
This may be the only time I write a rave 10/5 star review for a book and then go on to say it’s not for everyone, and I think @robcesternino would agree and endorse the review 🤣🤩 this book, as a super fan of Survivor, is EVERYTHING. Not to brag, but I got every reference, from easiest / most well known (sorry @dabudoodles but you are incredibly well known) to the most obscure “cmon Reed!” moments. I cackled. Like genuinely was laughing out loud as I read it and had to share the comedic bits with my husband, a fellow super fan, who hasn’t read a book in years but is dying to borrow this one. Any fan of Survivor, who understands the lore, desperately needs this book. It is a pure joy to read if you know the game inside and out. But, if you’re like “yeah I watched Borneo when it came out”, this isn’t the book for you. It would go right over your head. But to the RHAP listeners, the super fans, the ones who have been personally victimized by production and the winner’s edits… this book is absolutely, undoubtedly for you. A huge thanks to @atriabooks for my early ARC; it was a treat to finish reading on the day Rob premieres on THE TRAITORS! ⚔️ is anyone else planning to watch tonight? I wouldn’t miss it! #thetribeandihavespoken #rhap #survivor #survivorcbs #robcesternino
A great book for Survivor fans! I listen to Rob’s podcasts after Survivor every week. This book was a great look at Survivor and how it has evolved through the years. Rob also touches on his own personal experiences playing.
All in all, a great read if you are a survivor fan!
thank you rob for not only creating the best podcast community in the world, but for being the first book i’ve finished in basically a month thanks to a grueling reading slump <3
So anyone who knows me knows that it goes without saying that I am a huge Survivor and RHAP fan. So obviously, I was very stoked when I learned about the existence of this book. As much as I love podcasts, I have always preferred the written medium so it felt like this book was made just for me.
If you are a listener of RHAP then you know that Rob Cesternino is the Survivor historian so who better than him to write the definitive guide to the show. I will say that this book is not for the casuals. It is chock full of spoilers, history, references, and inside jokes that only someone who has watched Survivor in its entirety will understand and appreciate. It truly is a love letter to the Survivor superfan.
Even though I have clocked in hours listening to Cesternino analyze the game, I still found myself intrigued by the insights into the game that he outlines in this book. I would imagine this would be the perfect book to read if you are preparing to go play the game yourself. Cesternino provides unique insight into the game as a past player himself as well as a superfan.
You can see the passion Cesternino has for this show through his reverent writing. He clearly knows his stuff. Just like his television persona he brings a sense of wittiness and humor into his writing that makes the experience of reading this book a joyful romp. I especially enjoyed his analysis of all the big players to ever be on the show.
Well, if you’re reading this review at all it probably means you are a Survivor fan, and if that’s the case, run, don't walk to your nearest book store to pick this one up. It was made for you. Thanks to Rob for writing a book made for and by the superfan.
Thank you to NetGalley & Atria Books for the eARC!
I spend about 4 hours of each waking day thinking about or actively consuming survivor-based content. And Rob Cesternino and RHAP is at the center of that. I appreciate this book as it is — a retrospective of the development of the game. At the end of the day, it’s more of a table book for me — great gift for a superfan. It felt a little surface level at moments but it’s hard to assess that, when again, I spend 4 hours of each waking day on survivor. 4 stars but not a wide spread recommend
Thanks to Atria Books for my early copy for review!
I first encountered Survivor maybe 12 years ago? Which, at this point in time (season 50 is about to wrap up!), puts me at entering my Jeff Probst era halfway through its run and I was instantly hooked.
Rob Cesternino very much wrote this book for the big Survivor fans. His hot takes and deep knowledge of the show really shone through, and his love for the game and what it did for reality tv was beautiful to see on the page!
He highlights his own personal journeys as well as the gameplay of some of the legends. This book very much felt like a walk down memory lane with Rob adding in extra analysis along the way!
I highly recommend this read for anyone who finds themselves mouthing along to Jeff's lines throughout each episode!
Thank you so much to Rob, Atria Books, and NetGalley for sending me an advanced e-copy of this book. I am so honored. I’m a RHAP fan so to get my hands on this early was amazing. I loved it! I loved the setup and organization of this book. Some of the chapters included short vignettes about the players or memorable moments throughout the show, and some were longer chapters. I teared up at the end knowing we did not get our podfather on Season 50 or a previous returnee season, but also appreciating everything that he has achieved to this day by following his path! Again thank you so much and can’t wait to continue to listed to RHAP!!🩷
Rob Cesternino is one of many Survivor legends who never won the game. He turned his passion of the show into a successful podcast, dissecting the game, the players, and the masterful moves each season. In this book, Rob talks through the history of the legends, how Jeff Probst went from host on the sidelines to being immersed in the game, and how hopefuls out there can prepare to be on the show if ever selected.
This was a fun one for me, as someone who has been in the process of watching Survivor 1-50 in order for the first time. I’m currently on season 41, so I definitely had to cover my eyes and ears for parts of this book. I strongly recommend an immersive read for this one for a few reasons: 1.) Rob narrates the book, and as a podcaster, not only does he have the perfect voice for it, but he’s also hilarious. It really elevated my experience. 2.) The illustrator did an amazing job, and I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to enjoy the graphics throughout. I learned so much, and enjoyed getting more insight to one of my current passions. Like David, I hate being outside - but maybe one day, I’ll want to play Survivor, and this book will help me do that. Yes Rob, I’ll use your code phrase when I do.
I've been an RHAP patron for years, so I am definitely the target demographic for this book. It's a fun overview of the show; the only thing I would have liked more of is the stuff at the end where Rob talks about his own life and reflects on the podcast. The audiobook is especially enjoyable since Rob obviously thrives in an audio medium, and it includes his impressions of different characters. However, the physical book has illustrations, so you're in for a fun ride either way.
If you’re a fan of Rob, absolutely read a physical copy while listening to the audiobook. I’m obsessed with all the ways the audiobook deviates from the physical.
If you’re a fan of Rob and/or Survivor, you don’t need me to encourage you to read the book. You already know.
It’s a beautiful thing to watch someone fulfilling their destiny, and an honor and a Gervase to play a small, small role in it.
As my obsession with survivor seemingly knows no bounds, I loved this book! The unofficial survivor history with Rob Cesternino’s behind the scenes lore was amazing! Is there an extended edition of everything his editor made him leave on the cutting room floor because, just like the end of a 90 minute episode of survivor, I want more!
Very fun ride through Survivor lore. I appreciated the balance of reverence for the show’s history and criticism of the shell it has become. Gonna rewatch HvV now.
I received an ARC by winning a Goodreads giveaway. It was so much fun to read a book about my favorite show for the last 26 years and relive some great historical moments on Survivor.
So fun to relive all of the best moments of the last 50 seasons of survivor and hear Rob’s insights on prepping, playing, and life after competing. Could not recommend this book any more highly for survivor super fans!
This is an A+ report — sociological, historical, comedic, nostalgic — on my favorite show of all time. This won’t be for everyone, but super fans are in for a treat. Recommend the audio book — Rob’s impressions of Survivor’s finest made me laugh out loud.
I love this show and I hope to see Rob Cesternino back on my screen soon, whether that is a return to Survivor or The Traitors or any other social strategy competition.
I’ve been watching Survivor (on and off) since I was 9 years old, and I cried when this MF got voted off at final 3 in Amazon. This book isn’t just right up my alley, it IS the alley. 10/10.
“To anyone who keeps the torch of Survivor alive in your heart - you are my tribe.”
Part Survivor biography, autobiography, and how-to guide, The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a love letter to the best reality show on television. If you’re a longtime fan or only recently joined the Survivor community, The Tribe and I Have Spoken has something for everyone.
Cesternino guides readers through Survivor’s tumultuous history through anecdotes and quotes showcasing where Survivor has been and where it’s going in the future.
There is a whole chapter dedicated to detailing Survivor’s best players. From Boston Rob to Dee Valladares, Cesternino talks through their strategies/gameplay and how they influenced the game.
If you’re looking to apply, there’s an entire chapter that gives gameplay advice for every step of the game. While this was the least exciting chapter for me (as I have no interest in applying), I appreciate the detailed advice Cesternino included.
The illustrations are amazing. They’re funny, accurate, and help put faces to names.
Overall, The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a love letter to Survivor. It’s full of inside jokes and reminders of moments you may have forgotten in the past 25 years of exciting reality television.
*** I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
as a long time fan of the rhap network that rob has created, i was excited to dive into his unofficial survivor guide. while i’ve not been a survivor fan for long (big brother for life), it was an incredibly in depth look at iconic characters and moments from the show’s 50 season history, as well as rob’s own take from his time on the amazon & all stars. full of his trademark humour, this book is great for survivor fans and non fans alike!
I've been a longtime Survivor fan and longtime supporter of RHAP, so I was always going to buy this book. The biggest issue I had with this is the packaging, which I'll get more into below. I think the approach here was muddled in terms of what the publisher wanted this book to be and who it should be aimed toward, and I think it would've benefitted from a narrower focus.
Summary:
Rob Cesternino is a two-time Survivor player and longtime reality TV podcaster. In this book, he goes through the history of the show, adding in his trademark humor, and discusses the key players, memorable moments, and how the show and host have evolved throughout the years.
Spoilers below:
There are a few different angles to tackle with this book. I want to start by saying that Rob is absolutely the authority on Survivor, and my issues aren't to do with him not being the right choice. There is literally no one better suited to create the unofficial guide on the show. However, I don't know who this book is meant to be for. I've watched just about all the seasons (the New Era has been rough), and I've listened to many, many, many hours of RHAP, including the entirety of the Evolution of Strategy. There was so much recapping of past seasons that it felt like old news to me--and something that could've come from any Survivor fan, not just Rob, which is the perspective I'm looking for. As a superfan of the show, I don't know that I need a recap of what's happened because I'm well aware. There was a bit of analysis that went into those recaps but nothing to a particular depth that would provide me with a new perspective.
The chapter that included tips for every stage of the show was great. I don't know if Rob has done a podcast episode on that before, but it was a great how-to guide for what he'd recommend thinking about and how to prepare. Similarly, the chapter on his journey on the show was quite good, if a bit familiar from TEOS and other podcasts.
I think from a superfan perspective, I would've liked more definitive takes on things like how to evaluate the best winner, the evolution of social dynamics in the game and the television product, the behind-the-scenes production secrets and how the show has evolved in that way, etc. I want grittier discussions and a stronger voice/stance on those topics. Content-wise, it feels like this is geared toward a more casual fan, but wouldn't the more casual fan be more likely to pick up Jeff Probst's book? If Rob is the leader of the superfans, I think that's the audience he should be leaning into.
To add to that, the physical packaging here is not my favorite choice. The book is oversized, which makes it inconvenient to bring around to read at a coffeeshop. It's packaged almost like a coffee table book, but while the illustrations are well done, it's not picture-heavy-enough to really justify being a coffee table book. Not to mention, this now puts the book in direct competition to Jeff Probst's book instead of allowing each to appeal to different audiences. I think this could and should have been a standard 6x9 hardcover geared to the superfan. The cover direction as well, being illustrated, doesn't fit the moniker of "smartest surviving loser." A cartoon illustration reads as goofy, not savvy. This isn't a knock on the artist; it's just not the messaging I think they should be broadcasting. Something more akin to the direction Taran's Big Brother book took is more what I would expect/hope to get from Rob.
I'd love for Rob to try something else that's more in keeping with the brilliant and in-depth analysis that I'm used to hearing from him all the time on the podcast. I think this was just a packaging miss.
Editing to add: In case someone at the publishing company sees this, I spotted three incorrect “Malcom”s instead of “Malcolm” in case you’d like to do a search and replace for reprint.
I absolutely loved The Tribe and I Have Spoken. If you’ve been watching Survivor since the early days, this book feels like sitting down with an old friend and reliving all your favorite moments — the players, the twists, the alliances, the debates, and the memories of watching it unfold in real time. And if you discovered Survivor during its Netflix-era resurgence, this is a fantastic way to experience the deeper history and lore alongside longtime fans. Rob Cesternino brings such a unique perspective as both former player and longtime analyst through Rob Has a Podcast. His insights feel earned — not just from playing the game, but from years of podcasting, analyzing strategy, and genuinely having fun with Survivor and its community. There’s even a moment where Jeff Probst calls Rob “too clever for the game” — which feels especially meaningful knowing Rob was arguably the first true superfan cast, long before superfans were the norm. One of my favorite parts is the “You Had to Be There” section, where Rob walks you through the legendary watercooler moments and explains why they mattered at the time. Sure, everyone remembers Jonny Fairplay and the infamous grandma lie — but who remembers Billy Garcia falling in love? I literally laughed out loud flipping through these pages. Rob doesn’t just recap the moments — he recreates the feeling of watching them live, when you had to wait a week between episodes and debates carried on for days. The Heroes and Villains Hall of Fame is especially great, helping newer fans understand why certain players hit so hard culturally, while longtime fans get to relive those iconic moments all over again. There’s also a section with Rob’s advice on how to play the game, which is both smart and hilarious. If you’re part of the RHAP community, you’ll spot fun Easter eggs and familiar lore. But you absolutely don’t need to be — this book works for anyone who loves the show. And even if you’re not a hardcore Survivor fan: if you enjoy reality TV at all, this is still a really entertaining and insightful read. I’m also genuinely excited to have a Survivor coffee table book. I can’t wait for the hardcover to arrive at my house on May 5th — this is the kind of book you leave out, flip through, and share with friends. More than anything, this isn’t just a love letter to Survivor. It’s a love letter to the fans, the personalities, and the shared experience of watching something evolve over 25 years and nearly 50 seasons. Rob has built an incredible community around this game, and this book reflects that spirit beautifully. Entertaining, thoughtful, nostalgic, and genuinely joyful — highly recommend.
**Thank you to Atria Books for this free digital review copy.**
I have been a fan of the show Survivor for at least the last decade (I genuinely don't remember how or why I started watching, but I believe I was in college), started listening to Rob Has a Podcast not too long after, and became a paying member of Rob's Patreon sometime in the last year or so, so when I was approved to read an early copy of "The Tribe and I Have Spoken," despite really not vibing with the chosen title, I was giddy.
The book delivered exactly what I would expect from Rob. Lots of inside jokes and quotes from both Survivor itself and RHAP, deep insight into the game and the people who have played it, and a clear love and passion for this show that has completely changed Rob's life—as well as the lives of so many who have participated in it or even just watched for the last 25 years. I think anyone who calls themselves a fan of Survivor would love to read these essays.
If I have a complaint about the book, it's that I kind of wish Rob had waited until after season 50 aired (as well as US Traitors season 4) to complete the writing, because including things from this legendary season would have felt much more satisfying that the several nods to "we'll see what happens..." I also would have appreciated captions on the illustrations; maybe I'm not a big enough fan or maybe it's because I was reading this early copy on my phone, but I wasn't always sure who was who in the pictures.
2025/2026 will be the year of the RHAP book trilogy. Behind the mirror by Taran, Escape! by Stephen, and of course The tribe and I have spoken by Rob.
It’s almost silly to listen to over 2,000 hours of someone and expect something new to be said in a few hundred page book.
We all know rankings are arbitrary and reductive but if I were to rank the 3 I would say Behind the mirror The tribe and I have Spoken Escape!
Behind the mirror really feels like the 1,000s of hours of discussion RHAP has had about big brother perfectly summarized into one book. Taran hits all the major talking points every true Big Brother fan wants cemented in the legacy of big brother. Behind the mirror really feels like the RHAP companion book for big brother that dives into the strategy, racism, sexism and everything that makes RHAP coverage so unique.
The tribe and I have spoken is fun, but feels more like a collection of unrelated blurbs than a true book. It doesn’t read like the ultimate RHAP companion book on survivor. Unconnected blurbs on big players and moments wasn’t needed. I do want to commend the chapter “oops all Cochran”. This is by far the best chapter in the book and somehow Rob discusses something never truly put into words before about the evolution of how survivor portrays the super-fan.
It is full of robs humor though and similar to my magic 8-ball, bell, and Jacaré buff, will always hold a spot on my shelf.
The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a detailed look at the world of Survivor, told from the perspective of someone who has both played the game and covered it for years. The book goes through the history of the show, touching on major seasons, standout players and the strategies that have shaped how the game is played. It breaks down how alliances, blindsides and twists have evolved over time and talks about key moments from tribal councils and challenges. The author also brings in insights from his podcasting and interviews with some of the players. Along the way, the book highlights how Survivor has grown and changed, both on-screen and behind the scenes.
I’ve been watching Survivor since around season five so I found this book interesting overall. It’s packed with stories about past players. There are so many that I kept having to pause and Google who was being talked about (I still didn’t remember a lot of them). It was cool getting a look at the history of the show, how much it’s evolved and behind-the-scenes details. My favourite part was chapter six, which lays out the ultimate Survivor playbook, from getting cast all the way to winning (or not). Fans of Survivor will enjoy this book.
As a massive RHAP fan, I can’t even pretend to be unbiased here. Rob Cesternino and the entire Survivor community have been such a staple of my daily routine for years that reading this felt like catching up with an old friend. The way Rob maps out the trajectory of the series is fantastic. He perfectly captures the magic of Borneo and the transformation of Jeff Probst from a standard host into the icon he is today. Reliving the legendary heroes, villains, and iconic moments through his lens felt like the best kind of deep-dive podcast ranking, but the standout sections for me were the Survivor Playbook chapters. They are an absolute masterclass in strategy and a definitive guide that every fan (and future Survivor contestant) needs in their collection. Even though I’m no stranger to Rob’s story, reading about his personal evolution to the Podfather of reality TV was still incredibly moving. It’s evident that he poured his heart into every page, punctuated by his classic witticisms in the footnotes, while the wonderful illustrations add a fun, creative touch that truly brings the stories to life. I am so proud of what Rob has built! This is an absolutely brilliant book and a total essential for the community!
As a lifelong fan of Survivor and a longtime listener of Rob Cesternino’s podcast, this book felt like it was written specifically for me. I absolutely loved it.
I listened to the audiobook version first and completely devoured it. Rob’s narration adds so much personality and humor to the experience, and the book itself feels like one giant celebration of Survivor history. The way he weaves together iconic moments, legendary quotes, behind-the-scenes stories, and sharp humor makes it incredibly entertaining from beginning to end.
What I especially appreciated was that the book never feels overly dry or analytical. Even while covering the evolution and legacy of the show, it stays fun, nostalgic, and full of love for Survivor and its fandom. You can tell this was a passion project.
I also own the physical copy and already know I’ll be reading it again this summer. From what I’ve seen, the illustrations and visual elements add even more to the experience.
You definitely do not need to be a listener of Rob Has a Podcast to enjoy this book, but if you’re a Survivor fan, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s funny, heartfelt, nostalgic, and packed with references and moments that longtime viewers will absolutely adore.
