Truth is the one luxury the rich can’t affordExiled on a wintry French Riviera, Chadwick, a disgraced agent, hides in a shuttered hotel, trying to forget the betrayal that cost his lover her life. Ordered to lie low, and against the advice of the enigmatic Silje, he agrees to help a Latvian woman find her missing brother, believed drowned in a shipwreck.
Caught between his commitment to one woman, and his love for another, he is drawn into a ruthless conspiracy that endangers everyone close to him. Forced to confront the mistakes that ruined him, he is condemned to repeat them – only, this time, he may not survive.
I came upon this new book just before a long airline trip to Asia which means 2 x 13 hours of available time to read a thriller.
What a good surprise to read about fallen agent Chadwick who creates more trouble by his sheer presence and seems to get anyone near him killed as a consequence.
Without willing to spoil on the story - dynamic with new even (read drama) every few pages or so, we might be reading the first of hopefully a long series as Chadwick seems to have all it needs to become a sequel-type of detective.
What I did find interesting is that no-one - even the main character, is really sympathetic and you have a certain (not-guilty) pleasure in reading about all of them being morally of physically tortured. 2nd interesting point is that the hero is not smart - of course he will manage to survive (otherwise no sequel - big spoiler !) but Chadwicks makes almost more mistakes than hits - which will result in many more wounds and deaths than necessary to solve the plot.
From the beginning it is (rather) obvious who are the true villains but I always find more interesting how they manage to ruin themselves and get caught rather than the surprise of the unexpected. However there are many twists in the story to keep you alert and at the end you have the final messages: do not trust anyone and do not mess with other people's problems !
So congrats to the authors and waiting to read about the future disasters Chadwick will no doubt continue to generate.
