Red flags belong in the dark romances I read, but a masked stalker steps out of the shadows and saves me.
By day, I’m a reporter chasing small-town stories that no one reads. By night, I’m hooked on tales of dangerous men and the women reckless enough to love them.
Fantasy collides with reality when a broody biker appears where he shouldn't, leaves cryptic gifts, and bugs my room. He's the kind of morally gray hero I highlight in books at 2AM.
I should run from a man who hides his face, keeps secrets, and severs handsy fingers that touch me. But he steps between me and the crime syndicate I research on the side, who buy judges, erase witnesses, and rule the city through blood.
And now the past I’ve spent years outrunning is finally catching up, and my masked shadow and I must uncover the truth, or end up buried with it.
Painted Scars is a standalone dark romantic comedy for the girls who want severed fingers instead of flowers, packed with grumpy sunshine chemistry, and a curvy heroine. Contains content warnings. Guaranteed HEA. Each book features a different couple. Ideal for fans of Lights Out by Navessa Allen, Leather & Lark by Brynne Weaver, and Rook & Rebel by Kate Crew.
First book I’ve read by this author and I’m grateful to have been give the chance to read this ARC. This is a dark romance with stalker, second chances, and a girlie that loves dark romance herself. It did start slow for me but once you get into a few chapters things begin to happen and they don’t disappoint. Glitter Bombs start to happen left and right. I will definitely be reading more from this author!
Absolutely loved this book! It started off a little slow but once it got to the good stuff, I was hooked! Dark and twisty with glitter bombs along the way. Well written with a great plot, lots of smut and plenty of laughs. Can’t wait for book 2!
I tried but I just couldn’t. I was selected a a ARCH reader and this is the first book I’ve ever DNF 😭 I am so sorry.
Felt like it was trying to be too many things and the style was just not for me. Too many references to other books and the book community as a whole. It made it hard to focus on the book itself.
I found myself constantly rolling my eyes at the nicknames. In general it felt like it repeated itself ALOT (I think it needed some more editing) everything just felt forced
Felt like it tried to be “young, cool and relatable” but it was just a drag honestly.
I think the story line had real potential but the writing style was just not the right fit.
If you want a book that is similar to Lights Out & Rook & Rebel with a glittery sprinkling of The Mindf#ck Series, this book is for you! Give me books like this allll. Day. Long! A morally grey, golden retriever MMC and dark romance obsessed FMC with spoilt rotten yorkie (named after the ultimate book boyfriend of all time) and daddy issues. This messy, chaotic, wild story had me cackling, kicking my feet, pacing around my living room and anxiously biting my nails. It was angsty, mysterious, fun, and bookish. Kate is an awesome FMC, who is a fierce and brave journalist and avid reader with a love for stalker tropes and masked MMCs. She's been added to my list of favourite badass FMCs. August is *chef's kiss*, utter perfection. He has a few... issues he needs to work through, but what morally grey grump doesn't? He learns all the bookish lingo just to make Kate happy, he's memorised Celine Dion songs so he can quote them during conversation and Josh (Kate's spoilt yorkie) is completely besotted with him. Anywaay, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it's definitely a new favourite for me and would recommend! Kate was incredibly relatable to me in many different ways.
Thank you so much for trusting me to read your book. I loved it and cannot wait for next book to be released!
The writing style was not for me. It’s so disjointed. Metaphor after metaphor that don’t connect. A found family trope that’s surface level. CONSTANT talk about other books and booktok just to try to seem relevant. They don’t have a deep relationship or a meaningful one and they drag this out for 400+ pages. The bad guy is an entity that’s hard to follow as to who or what they are. Are we in a world of gangs ? It’s confusing and weird. Just not for me.
“Sexy, slow burn of two broken souls with a dash of STFUATMDLAGG line!” I absolutely loved this book. I had the privilege of reading this ARC for @caitlynskyauthor and it did not disappoint. I couldn’t wait to read it every night just to be caught up in the chaos of “Glitter Bomb” and Book Daddy!! A 5 star from me as the dark romance plus plot twists plus banter plus lots of smut plus grovelling plus so much more had me wanting more. I’m invested for book 2 (this one with be extreme smut to the next level) and book 3, (I think will be the best as the silent ones are the most intriguing 😉) Hurry up Caitlyn Sky with the next books coz I need more!!
Quick Summary This book is a wild ride of glitter, grumps, and thigh-clenching drama with enough sass and Aussie vibes to keep you hooked. Caitlyn serves dark romance with a cheeky wink, and honestly, I was laughing, swearing, and loving every second. I swooned over this book the whole way through and this is a must read for all.
Reading Thoughts 📕I felt like this woman was my twin- tea, sewing, dark romance, audiobook, glitter and sparkles - she just gets to have the stalker daddy 😜 📕This had me laughing out loud, swearing at them and clenching my thighs. Caitlyn just has a way with words. 📕Glitter Bomb (aka Kate) has come leaps and bounds since her ordeal but it is still lingers, she is sassy and fierce. 📕Grumpy Daddy (aka Mace) is there to hold her through it in every way. He has his own rough past and she helps him to unlock his heart again. This man screams dreamy stalker in the best way possible. 📕The broader story that takes place is brilliantly constructed and is super intriguing in itself. 📕The fact that it was an Aussie author always thrills me with the little bits that scream home.
Words that linger 🍷Book Girlie me assesses him against the book boyfriend scale and purrs, “Yes, Daddy.” 🍷They’ve already catalogued everything about you, given you a backstory, and assigned you tropes. The only question is, what role are you playing?” 🍷He’s right out of my dark romance handbook. Thoughtful. Protective. Possessive. Obsessive. 🍷“I prefer morally gray vanilla, thank you.” 🍷“You’re riding up front, and my fingers are going into your panties until you’re begging for forgiveness.” 🍷“If anyone’s walking into battle bedazzled in rhinestone armor, dick swinging, it’s you, Glitter Bomb.” 🍷Then I’m going to give you the full fantasy. Gag, ropes, and fucking the glitter out of your brains. What’s your safe word?”

Painted Scars blends dark romance with moments of humour, and while there were elements I genuinely enjoyed, the overall mix did not quite land in the right places for me.
I connected with the premise and found Kate an engaging character, especially with her bookish lens on the world. The darker storyline held my attention and I appreciated the tension that built as the plot moved toward its later stages. From around the three quarter mark through to almost the end, the pacing lifted and the action drew me in. Those chapters were easily the strongest for me and reminded me why I had picked up the book.
Where I felt less connected was with the tonal balance. The romantic and serious threads sometimes sat at odds with the comedic moments, and the humour, grounded in well known tropes, appeared so frequently that it became harder for me to stay immersed. The repeated use of certain language choices also began to feel overwhelming rather than playful, which shifted my experience of the story.
I also found some aspects of the mysterious love interest a little difficult to suspend disbelief for, particularly the long stretches where he remained fully masked (without naming the specific mask used) during close interactions. While I understood the intent, this detail impacted my ability to fully invest in their dynamic.
Even with these moments, I did enjoy parts of the journey. The later chapters, the heightened tension, and the more serious emotional beats worked well for me. Readers who enjoy darker romance with heavy trope play, morally grey heroes, and a blend of spice and suspense may connect differently and find a lot to love here.
I received this book as an ARC, however this review reflects my honest thoughts and feelings shared voluntarily.
Who doesn’t love a Cinderella/Robin Hood retelling? This a dark romcom but just make sure you check your triggers
I absolutely loved this book, I had a few personal revelations while reading it… 1 I absolutely need to find some bookish friends and have real life catch ups, 2 August may be my least favourite month but it’s my new favourite book boyfriend and 3 I maybe don’t dislike Celine Dion as much as I used to.
I love supporting fellow Aussies and I loved the few subtle nods like timtams, Brut and koala sprinkled throughout the book.
Ok so where to start?!
Kate/Unicorn/Glitter Bomb - she’s living her very own dark romance and uses colour as a shield and her words to make change in a world that takes what it wants and dictates the narrative at every turn. She’s been a victim and becomes the hero she’s needed.
August/Mace/Grumpy Daddy - he literally steals from the rich to give to the poor after having to erase his life for looking too deep into the shadows, he now lives in them watching and waiting to strike. He is the living breathing persona of a redemption arc, glass unicorn, severed fingers and all.
My heart was breaking for August the closer he got, the deeper he went and yes even being a romance with the way Kate could be determined I wasn’t sure he’d get his second chance and I was equal parts TAKE OFF THE DAMN HELMET and don’t do it don’t do it please.
As someone that had for many years worn colour as armour, seeing Kate find her strength was beautiful and I was so oddly proud of her from not backing down from the fight and instead embracing the challenges even when choice was taken from her - again.
I’ve always been a sucker for a morally grey MC but I’m forever hooked on morally orange (my actual favourite colour!) with a side of baking.
I loved the side characters so much and giggled at their own code names and am really looking forward to delving into Murder Spice!
I have never chuckled as much reading a dark romance as I did with this book and will never ever look at STFUATTDLAGG the same.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 Painted Scars @Caitlyn Sky Aussie Indie Author Shadow Lake Stalkers- Book 1
I have never highlighted a book more in my life. Caitlyn’s writing just hit all the marks for me.
🍋Kate- Glitter Bomb is a fierce and feisty FMC. I loved all the dark book romance mentions in this book (Bad Book Girly). Literally made me laugh out loud throughout. 🍋August-All the Daddies 😉-those turquoise eyes. He is the best mix of all the book boyfriends I have read. Touch her and die, acts of service, cooks, Celine Dion, learns about her book world, nothing is too much effort, burn the world down for you. 🍋Loved the banter and plot twists with all charters. 🍋Josh 🐾 loved him!! 🍋Two broken souls that stand up to demons together and find the love for each other on the way. 🍋I can’t wait for the other books in this series. I’m so invested after this one. 🍋Would definitely recommend this book!! Just check the TW as your MH matters.
Words that Linger: 🍋”Don’t compromise the mission with your 🍆” -August
🍋”We’re going to find you someone who wants you in the light, not just the shadows”. -Kate’s friend Charlie.
🍋”You look fear in the eye and told it to F off. That’s not just brave, that’s fearless.” -August
🍋”Whatever happens in this war, I’ll burn everyone and everything to keep her safe.” -August
🍋”Baby, for the love of your book gods, shut the f up and take my 🍆 like a good girl”. -August
🍋”So long there is glitter in our autopsies and Celine at my funeral”. -Kate
So many more I could of added but just read the book. 😀
Thank you so Caitlyn Sky and Aussie_Indie_hub for this ARC.
Let’s see, where to start … First, of course I love ‘Painted Scars’. This story has depth, action, intrigue, sex, romance, perceived betrayal, groveling, true friendship, romance book trope references, and true love. The lead and supporting characters are all well fleshed, flawed, damaged, unique, and extremely likable. I am absolute in my certainty that I will enjoy books two and three as much, if not more, than book 1’s ‘Painted Scars’.

Love supporting Aussie authors , forewarning read the triggers this book is morally grey in areas and dark romance. I throughly recommend reading this book, it has romance, funny moments, tension and adventure. Kudos to the author for writing a fabulous book.
This was so good! The mysterious morally gray biker who will burn the world for his queen! I can't wait to read the rest of this series! Lots of trauma but lots of love too. Their book club reminds me of my book club friends too!
Was given an arc of this book and have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by it. The author blended some dark humour with romance and ur reminded me of Butcher and Blackbird. Would definitely recommend it and am looking forward to reading book 2.
This book had me hooked from the start!!! Kate and August are so suited, they are definitely in my top 10 favourite couples.
This story was written brilliantly. There was laughs, oohs and aahs. I struggled to put it down. Highly recommend if you’re into your darker romance. Harper is awesome and I cannot wait to read her story.
It’s a dark romcom about Kate, a reporter by day and a sassy book girlie by night. She leads the Morally Gray Man Book Club with his friends, prays to find a man who will fulfill all her dark fantasies and has Josh Hammond, a very spoiled Yorkshire. 🐾 She doesn't know she's attracted the attention of a grumpy stalker. He didn't expect to fulfil one of her darkest wishes. He’s the perfect man with golden retriever energy, commitment into learning all about the bookish world, cooks, has moral. Sure he’s extremely protective and a bit unhinged, but who doesn’t love that?! 🤷♀️
Their relationship is awesome despite the tension, action and suffering, all their strength, chemistry, support and love shine through. 💖
An addictive reading and engaging writing. It made me giggle, kicking my feet but also feeling the tension. ❤️🔥
It’s an amazing love story filled with action and emotion. The chemistry and the plot are beautiful entwined, with bookish banter and intriguing side characters I’m eager to read about! 🤩
I truly loved it and recommend it!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The story follows Kate and August. August is part of a tactical team determined to eliminate crime organizations, and he believes Kate might be tangled up in the very world he’s sworn to fight. But is she truly part of the problem…or something far more complicated?
What makes Painted Scars stand out is its dark rom‑com energy, blending suspense with sharp humor and morally gray allure. Caitlyn Sky introduces readers to the Morally Gray Men Book Club, where red flags, scars, biker helmets, and “Big Knife Energy” replace fairy‑tale princes. This backdrop sets the tone: dangerous men, tangled loyalties, and a heroine caught between perception and reality.
Kate’s character is layered…by day, she’s a reporter covering community events, but by night she’s a book lover drawn to stalker romances. That duality makes her fascinating: she’s both ordinary and extraordinary, someone who straddles the line between safety and risk. August, meanwhile, embodies the grumpy, relentless archetype, a man whose mission collides with his instincts. Their dynamic sparks tension, mistrust, and undeniable chemistry.
Without giving away spoilers, the novel thrives on questions of trust, obsession, and blurred morality. Readers are invited to ask: What happens when the lines between danger and desire blur? The pacing keeps you hooked, with moments of humor breaking through the darker undertones.
Caitlyn Sky’s writing style is bold, unapologetic, and playful. She leans into tropes like stalker romance and tactical suspense but twists them with wit and chaos. The result is a book that feels both edgy and entertaining, perfect for readers who enjoy morally gray heroes, high‑stakes tension, and banter that cuts as sharply as the knives mentioned in the blurb.

Who Knew Emotional Damage Could Be This Funny?” 🎨💔😂
Painted Scars by Caitlyn Sky is exactly what happens when a dark romance crashes headfirst into a comedy club — messy, magnetic, and completely unhinged in the best way possible.
Our heroine? A walking disaster with killer eyeliner and even better sarcasm. The love interest? Broody, mysterious, and apparently allergic to healthy communication 🖤. Their banter? Sharp enough to wound. Their chemistry? Enough to set off a small fire in your Kindle.
Sky somehow manages to make trauma bonding hilarious — the kind of book where you’re laughing one second and emotionally ruined the next. The emotional depth sneaks up on you between all the chaos and quips, and when the serious moments hit… they hit.
Yes, it’s a little over the top in places (you can practically hear the dramatic background music), but that’s part of its charm. It’s unapologetically dramatic, delightfully snarky, and secretly tender under all the darkness.
✨ Tropes you’ll love: 🖤 Grumpy x chaotic sunshine 🎭 Enemies (with incredible tension) to lovers 💋 Forced proximity 💄 Emotional damage but make it sexy 🫶 Healing through humor 🔥 Banter that could kill 🎨 Artist x muse chaos
If you like your romance a little dark, a little unhinged, and a lot hilarious, Painted Scars will absolutely deliver. You’ll laugh, swoon, and probably question your taste in fictional men — but hey, that’s part of the fun. 😏

This was the first book I read from this author, but I love supporting Aussie Indie authors and I am so glad I got the chance to ARC read this! It’s a Dark Stalker RomCom, and I was hooked from the beginning. Grumpy Daddy (August) is a morally grey badass who stalks a woman to see whose side she is on, and Glitter Bomb (Kate) is a book girlie and badass brave reporter. Both MCs have a rough and trauma-filled past that is the reason they are the way they are and why they devote their time to trying to take down the corrupt in their city and helping the people whose lives were ruined. This story was very well written, great plot, plenty of spice and lots of comedy throughout that had me giggling out loud as I read
I also LOVED the side characters and look forward to reading more about them in the next books. Especially Murder Spice and Katar!
I really wanted to give this book a higher rating because it had such potential. Besides the fact that this book really could have benefited from going thru another round of editing, the plot was pretty solid and definitely has the ability to continue into a sequel. My complaints about the book are definitely personal opinion. 1. I found the FMC very irritating. Kate is supposed to be a journalist up against this mafia-esque syndicate, but her entire personality seems to be made up of “I’m a dark romance book girlie”, and that’s it. It was just too much. 2. After the 7th time reading the nicknames “Glitter bomb”, and “Grumpy Daddy”, I wanted to rip my hair out. Honestly, I can’t tell you how many times I rolled my eyes. 3. This book took me 4x longer to read than normal. The beginning was very slow and I struggled to push thru. It does pick up about halfway thru, and becomes more interesting. (I wish the Romans were explained earlier on in the book because it was slightly confusing in the beginning).
Overall, the plot was decent and I did really like the MMC. I would read the second book because those characters are more interesting to me and I would like to know their stories.
I’ll be honest — Painted Scars was longer than my usual reads, and I did struggle with the pacing in parts. But I’m really glad I pushed through, because once it found its rhythm, this book completely hooked me.
Caitlyn Sky blends dark humour, emotional grit, and feral obsession in a way that somehow works. The mix of trauma healing, knife-play tension, and glitter-covered defiance gives it a chaotic kind of beauty.
Kate is sunshine with a streak of survival, and August? A morally-gray biker with cinnamon-roll tendencies and the emotional range of a thunderstorm. Together, they’re messy, magnetic, and oddly wholesome in the middle of the carnage.
If you love grumpy × sunshine, touch-her-and-die energy, and MMCs who threaten violence then make you breakfast, you’ll devour this.
This book was full of so much! It had plot, references, spice, references, glitter, references, morally grey men, references, a canine side character, and did I mention references? It started a bit slow, almost having me concerned it was going to copycat some of the books it actually referenced itself... But it picks up! Our FMC is annoyingly chipper, but I understand it's a shield she wields. Just as our MMC is her counterpart. This book almost seems to run on exaggerations though.
The plot is full of espionage in mafia-esque undertones with a city being ran by dirty heads and sleezy bosses. Kate along with a team of amazing friends/side kicks has to take on the task of righting the wrongs that have been done to not only them, but others and stay alive along the way.
Gaining a stalker was never a part of her plan, but being the dark romance reader that she is, can you blame her for not having ideas?
Tropes included but not limited to: Grumpy x Sunshine Masked Stalker Biker Crime Thriller Daddy k!nk
Thanks to Caitlyn for this one! I can't wait for Katar and Harper, she's more my aesthetic! 🙃
I really wanted to enjoy this book, but it ended up being one of the most time-consuming reads I’ve picked up in a while — and not for good reasons. The story is packed with references: other books, BookTok trends, inside jokes… so many that I had to stop every other page to look something up. Honestly, I don’t even need to do that with science books. A glossary would have helped a lot.
Because of this constant referencing, the book often felt like I was missing a prequel — even though this is the first in the series. It created a strange distance from the story and made the reading experience feel fragmented. The plot itself didn’t help much either. Instead of one coherent storyline, it came across as a string of loosely connected scenes without a real emotional or narrative thread tying them together.
I pushed through with determination and finished it, but it was tough. Maybe if you’re very active on BookTok you’ll enjoy it more and catch all the nods without losing the flow. But if you’re not deep into that world, be prepared for a challenging read.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Painted Scars was such a ride! From the moment the masked mystery man appeared, I was HOOKED 👀💀 The chemistry is intense, the tension is delicious, and the whole stalker-romance vibe?
Chef’s kiss for anyone who loves their romance a little unhinged 😏🖤
I adored the dark humour sprinkled in — it made the heavy moments feel balanced and kept me flipping pages like a woman possessed 📖⚡️
And the MMC? Morally grey, dangerous, obsessive… but also impossible not to love. Truly the definition of “I can fix him… but I actually don’t want to” energy 😌🗡️
Why not 5 stars? A couple moments felt a tiny bit rushed, and some scenes were a little chaotic — but honestly, I was too busy being entertained to care much 😂✨
If you love: 🖤 Dark romance 👤 Masked, obsessive MMCs 💋 Banter with a twisted edge 🌑 A story that keeps you guessing …then you’re absolutely going to devour this.
The beginning of the book had a few cringe moments with references to a well-known stalker (gotta read it to find out, no spoilers) but as the book got further along I came to 🤍 these references throughout. But what really gripped me was the funny bookish Quotes that Caitlyn came up with. These are unique to her and just shows how fun and quirky of an author she can be.
I fell in love with August and how he was willing to be the biker stalker Kate needed but also was willing to burn the world down for her..........
And I almost forgot about Josh (Hint Hint) The way August treats him is swoon worthy. Makes my #morallygreyvanilla 🤍 melt
They are such a power couple and can't wait to see what the future lies for them and the other characters from this book.
This book in released on the 18th of November so I suggest you run don't walk on this release day. YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED. I hope you fall in love with the #morallygreyvanilla and #orangeflags world of #kateandaugust as I did.
A Dark Romance Girlie and her Grumpy Stalker. Every twisted fantasy she has ever imagined coming to life and even better than she thought it could be.
There are Bad Guys, Good Guys determined to see them fall and a gorgeous little dog that thinks he is the boss of the house!!
I had moments where I gasped out loud in the most inappropriate of places and I even cancelled a meeting to keep reading a particularly "interesting" chapter.
The spice is spicing and the banter is absolute perfection!! You will be giggling at the Celine Dion references and looking at the belt to your dressing gown in completely new ways!!
Cannot wait for the next instalment in this series and I will be seeking out the Special Edition with the glitter sprayed edges...It might need to be waterproof though...
This one is for all the feral book besties out there. So many tropes, so little time. This book is a fantastic vibes read when you just need a rom-com with a side of crazy fries. With best friends that make you immediately go yeah I need their book like NOW, and a plot that is strong enough to carry a series, this one is a can't miss.
I did get a little tired of her constantly calling him "Daddy" (even though she does give him a Daddy nickname), and there was one scene that gave me the "*side-eye* really?" icks, but it's late enough in the book that it's read through-able and didn't make me want to immediately dnf the book (because honestly the plot was vibing and when a book can carry you through an ick it's worth the read.
Cannot wait for book 2!!!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Kate is a reporter and a member of a *thirsty* book club posting some questionable videos on booktok. She catches the attention of August, and despite his… ahem… reservations, he’s the one set up to ‘protect’, aka monitor, her.
This started very slowly, and honestly, it took time for me to get into it. It’s unhinged, dark, and honestly, I struggled with Kate. There is humour, some of it made me cringe, the nicknames were atrocious, but there was plenty of banter, tension, mayhem and adventure to keep you riveted.
Is it for everyone? No. Did I enjoy it? Yes. I’m not sure yet if this is a series I truly want to continue, but it’s good enough that having a rad of the next one will help make the decision for me.

A big thank you to the lovely Caitlyn Sky for letting me read the ARC of Painted Scars! :)
My biggest piece of advice for new readers: be persistent and keep reading!! The first few chapters are a little slow but things soon start to heat up between Kate, our dark romance obsessed FMC, and her mysterious grumpy stalker, August. With dual POVs and a HEA, this book is filled with witty banter, enjoyable sexual tension, lots of glitter, and a severed finger scene that had me chuckling (IYKYK)! It was well written overall and had a satisfying ending that wrapped up the main storyline and left me wanting more! I'm thoroughly looking forward to reading book 2 of the Shadow Lake Stalkers when it's released!
