His Reign Shall Have No End is a new introduction to traditional Catholic Social Teaching (CST). Too often, this subject is reduced to a grab-bag of catechetical truisms and welfare policies driven by modern secular, egalitarian, and pluralist assumptions. Instead, Dr. Kwasniewski traces all of its major elements back to the world-changing mystery of the Incarnation, whereby the Son of God became Head and Ruler of mankind in regard to goods both natural and supernatural. So far from being superseded by the "march of events" or what some would call "progress," the kingship of Jesus Christ-a revealed truth given consummate formulation by Pope Pius XI in his 1925 encyclical Quas Primas-is nothing less than the master key to CST's coherence and, more importantly, to the flourishing of nations no less than the beatitude of individuals. Wherever this kingship is ignored or denied, individuals, families, whole societies decompose like a body deprived of a soul; wherever it is welcomed in faith, Christian life revives and Christendom stirs from slumber. Divine Providence raised up Pope Leo XIII to guide the reconquest; his teaching is taken here as the unsurpassed guide to the thorniest political and economic questions that confront the human race at a time of tremendous upheaval.
Dr. Peter A. Kwasniewski holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Thomas Aquinas College in California and an M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
After teaching at the International Theological Institute in Austria and for the Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Austrian Program, he joined the founding team of Wyoming Catholic College in Lander, Wyoming, where he currently serves as Professor of Theology and Choirmaster. He is a board member and scholar of The Aquinas Institute for the Study of Sacred Doctrine, which is publishing the Opera Omnia of the Angelic Doctor, and a tutor for the Albertus Magnus Center for Scholastic Studies.
Kwasniewski has taught and written extensively on a wide variety of subjects, especially Thomistic thought, sacramental and liturgical theology, the history and aesthetics of music, and the social doctrine of the Church. He has published two books with The Catholic University of America Press and a volume of music for liturgical use, Sacred Choral Works (Corpus Christi Watershed, 2014). His latest book, Resurgent in the Midst of Crisis: Sacred Liturgy, the Traditional Latin Mass, and Renewal in the Church (Angelico Press, 2014), is being translated into eight languages.
Dr. Kwasniewski writes for several major weblogs, including New Liturgical Movement and Rorate Caeli.
I read this book from cover to cover, and it was very interesting and valuable to me as a Catholic convert, but also to my husband who is a cradle Catholic, and also a big Peter Kwasniewski fan. It was a fascinating read and it challenged many of my assumptions and beliefs, especially around libertarianism and capitalism. And as always with Peter Kwasniewski, be it throughout his writing or in interviews, he sneaks in a ton of recommendations for excellent books which I have already lined up for future reading. I highly recommend this book to all Catholics who want to understand the true social teaching of the Church, and not the distorted toothless versions promoted since the 1960s.
Dr. K’s brief presentation of CST was truly accessible, broadening and clarifying my understanding of the subject. His chapters exploring teachings on economics were particularly helpful to me and opened my eyes to the real injustices among different models while also describing distributism in a way I finally understand. I underlined multiple passages for future reference. Definitely recommend having a copy on every Catholic bookshelf.
