I have a story in this anthology, so my review is perhaps tinged with pride at having been part of this journey. However, setting aside my contribution, Super Canucks comprises incredibly strong, diverse, and delightfully local stories by and about Canadians from across the country. I enjoyed every single story, which is not a given when reading a multi-author anthology. Editors Andy Taylor and Mat Del Papa put a truly heroic effort into selecting and editing the eleven stories in this volume. My favourites, if I had to choose, were "Allies" by Christopher O'Halloran and "Old Crow" by Melanie Marttila, but every author brought their A(Eh?)-Game. Premee Mohamed's "The Shunt" is delightfully weird and surreal, and will appeal to fans of weird fiction.
Basically, there's something for everyone in this collection. Classic superhero vs. villain stories; stories where the "villain" is less a person and more a concept; Canadians of all stripes facing uniquely Canadian problems; heroes facing modern problems that are universal; nostaglia and locality as well a macrocosmic, overarching connection between the stories about what it means to be heroic in our modern world.
You don't have to be Canadian to love this little volume, but it helps!
