Ik vond Hero Journey to the East een leuk boek om te lezen. De dystopische wereld en het idee van een reis naar het mysterieuze Eden maken het verhaal interessant en zorgen ervoor dat je benieuwd blijft naar wat Hero nog gaat meemaken. Ik vond het ook leuk om te zien hoe Hero zich tijdens zijn reis ontwikkelt en steeds meer leert over de wereld om hem heen.

Soms voelde het verhaal voor mij wel een beetje lang, vooral bij sommige beschrijvingen van de reis of de omgeving. Daardoor werd het tempo af en toe iets langzamer voor mijn gevoel. Aan de andere kant gebeuren er genoeg dingen tijdens de reis om toch door te willen blijven lezen.

Voor mij persoonlijk was het geen “wow-boek”, daarom geef ik het 3 sterren. Maar ik denk wel dat dit een boek is waar veel jongeren echt van kunnen genieten. Ik ben in ieder geval benieuwd hoe het verhaal verdergaat in het volgende deel.

Van Wolter kreeg ik de vraag of ik zijn boek wilde lezen en recenseren en zo wat onder de aandacht kon brengen bij jongeren en leesbevorderaars. Hij is zelf docent Engels op een middelbare school en schreef dit boek met veel input van zijn leerlingen, omdat hij toch wel boeken miste die specifiek voor jongens leuk zijn. Ik ben groot voorstander van het bevorderen van leesplezier en kan me goed voorstellen dat het voor jongens in de puberleeftijd wat lastiger kan zijn dan voor meiden in dezelfde leeftijd om een goed en leuk boek te vinden, dus ik besteed graag wat aandacht aan dit boek op mijn kanalen. Wolter, enorm bedankt voor het recensie exemplaar!

En dan nu mijn ‘echte’ recensie. Ik vond dit boek echt nog veel beter dan ik had verwacht en raad het dan ook zeker aan!

Het plot deed me heel erg denken aan het tweede deel in ‘The Maze Runner’-serie, al vond ik niet dat het gekopieerd was. Het verhaal speelt zich af in een dystopische wereld, waar nucleaire oorlogen mutaties hebben veroorzaakt bij verschillende groepen mensen en de wereld een soort vervallen chaos en woestijn is geworden. Ik zag dan ook heel erg de wereld va ‘The Scorch Trials’ voor me en ik vind dat echt een geweldig boek (en een geweldige film), dus qua sfeer zat ik meteen al helemaal goed in het boek. Hoewel ik nog wel wat meer uitleg had gewild over de verschillende groepen mensen die er nog op aarde te vinden waren, had ik vrij snel door dat de ‘Freaks’ in ieder geval een soort zombies waren en dat de andere groepen mensen daar vooral voor op de vlucht zijn, al zijn er dus nog wat meer verschillen te noemen.

Zoals velen inmiddels wel zullen weten, ben ik afgestudeerd op YA dystopieën, waardoor ik echt mega enthousiast word van dit soort verhalen. Ik vond de wereld hier dan ook erg goed uitgewerkt. De omgeving werd goed beschreven, vooral door het ‘show, don’t tell’-principe, waardoor verdere handelingen en gevoelens van de hoofdpersoon goed te begrijpen waren. De ‘Freaks’ en hun gedrag worden goed omschreven, waardoor de angst van de personages goed te rechtvaardigen is, het verhaal ook echt een doel heeft en de spanning de boventoon voert.

Hero, de hoofdpersoon, heeft de grootste rol in dit boek en je groeit als lezer eigenlijk met hem mee. Je leest hoe hij steeds wat ouder wordt (13-20 jaar ongeveer), hoe hij steeds meer levenservaring opdoet en hoe zelfverzekerder hij wordt. Ik kan me voorstellen dat dat voor jongeren (jongens in het bijzonder) heel fijn kan zijn om te lezen, omdat de hoofdpersoon zich best kwetsbaar opstelt en het toch goedkomt. Dit is echt niet altijd even makkelijk in die leeftijd, maar wel heel belangrijk om te zien bij anderen - ook al zijn die anderen fictief.

Het plot bleef daarnaast van begin tot eind ook echt interessant. Mijn nieuwsgierigheid bleef worden gewekt door alle gebeurtenissen en ik wilde alsmaar weten hoe het verhaal verder zou gaan. Door de spannende gebeurtenissen en de vlotte schrijfstijl bleef ik doorlezen en bleef ik dus ook nieuwsgierig. Ik vond alleen het einde net iets té over de top, dat had wat mij betreft iets meer geloofwaardig en iets minder heldhaftig gemogen.

Wat daarnaast echt heel fijn is voor de leeservaring en ook een goede motivatie is voor jongeren, is het feit dat de hoofdstukken echt lekker kort zijn. De meeste hoofdstukken zijn een halve tot 4 pagina’s lang en de grootste is volgens mij maar ongeveer 10 pagina’s. Daarnaast is meteen duidelijk wie er aan het woord is, doordat ieder deelhoofdstuk begint met de naam van de persoon wiens perspectief je leest. Het boek zelf is dan wel weer aan de dikke kant, maar het opdelen in kleine fragmenten wil vaak ook goed motiveren.

Ik ben in ieder geval erg benieuwd naar het vervolg van dit verhaal, want ik wil graag weten hoe Hero’s avontuur verder zal gaan!

I feel genuinely grateful that the author reached out to me through social media and offered me the chance to read his book. Wolter, an English teacher in the Netherlands, set out with a clear and inspiring goal: to encourage teenagers—especially his own students—to read more. What makes this book even more unique is that many of his students contributed ideas that helped shape the story. Originally starting as a WattPad project, Hero: Journey to the East has now grown into a fully realized novel aimed primarily at a young adult audience, particularly teenage boys.

The story takes place in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world where Earth has become a vast wasteland, causing water to be scarce. War and radiation have altered a part of the humans to become cannibalistic creatures called 'Freaks', making survival a constant challenge.

We follow Hero, a teenage boy, as he journeys eastward in his electric car, Falcon, in search of a place called “Eden,” where life is rumored to be better. The novel spans several years, chronicling his journey, growth, and the many encounters he faces along the way.

This isn’t typically a genre I normally go for, but I’m really glad I gave it a chance—I ended up enjoying it a lot. The setting strongly reminded me of Mad Max and Dune, while also giving off Maze Runner and Star Wars vibes, all of which I really liked. The writing style is simple and accessible, making it easy to immerse myself in Hero’s perspective.

Because the book originated on WattPad, that structure is still noticeable. Chapters are divided into short, often shifting POV sections, which gives the story a dynamic and episodic feel. You can almost imagine readers eagerly waiting for each new installment as it was being written. This format contributes to the book’s fast pacing—there’s always something happening, and each section leaves you wanting more. Around the halfway point, I found it difficult to put the book down.

The characters are well-written and engaging. Hero feels authentic, dealing with typical teenage emotions and decisions, which adds both humor and relatability. At times, his impulsiveness can be frustrating, but it fits his character and stage of life. The book also introduces other points of view, including a character named Flash. Although we only get a small glimpse into his perspective, I found him intriguing and would love to see more of him in future installments.

Despite its length, the novel reads quickly thanks to its pacing, straightforward writing style, and the constant stream of events. The ending is satisfying while still leaving room for continuation, which makes me hopeful for a sequel—I would definitely pick it up.

Overall, if you’re looking for a fast-paced, engaging story set in a dystopian world, following the adventurous journey of a courageous young protagonist, this book is definitely worth checking out.

This story follows Hero, a teenage boy who loses his parents and travels with his electric car Falcon on a journey to the east, to find a paradise.
It’s a post apocalyptic world full of dangerous gangs, freaks and a lot of dangerous situations. Hero struggles to find people he can trust on this journey but he’s determined to keep his promise to find the paradise, Eden.

I couldn’t put this book down. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I would like this book when I started it. It’s a pretty thick book and a genre that’s new for me. I was scared I wouldn’t understand everything. But I’m so pleasantly surprised.
The writing style is so easy to follow and it really feels like you’re growing up with Hero. You learn about everything with him. The situations he finds himself in are crazy, but nothing felt unrealistic.
I was pretty grossed out at some scenes, I even had tears in my eyes in the end of the book.
I couldn’t put the book down and I’m actually sad it’s over. It really felt like a movie.

Ik vond Hero een leuk boek om te lezen!! Het genre dystopian vind ik echt top en dus valt dit boek al gauw snel bij mij in de smaak. Het boek deed mij al gauw denken aan ‘The Scorch Trial’ het 2e deel van de Mazerunner serie.

Het boek volgt Hero die leeft in een wereld waar eigenlijk nog heel weinig over is van hoe de wereld er ooit uit zag. De ouders van Hero zijn er niet meer en de enige uitweg die hij heeft is opzoek naar ‘hoop’, de plek ‘Eden’. Hero wilt koste wat het kost deze plek zoeken maar komt onderweg wat obstakels tegen.
Samen met Falcon, zijn auto gaat hij het avontuur aan.

Het boek leest makkelijk weg omdat je al gauw in de actie komt. Heel af en toe zaten er wat hoofdstukken in waarin het tempo, wat mij betreft, wat meer omhoog mocht. Er zit een heel klein beetje romance in en daarom is dit echt een goed YA boek.

This book was a nice surprise. My usual reads are darker, so reading this in between felt like a nice little break from that. It brought back the same feelings i had during the Maze Runner books, specifically the Scorch Trials (i spotted someone else mentioning this in another review and i totally agree). While it does give off the same vibe, it's a very different story from those books though. If i had spotted this book on the shelves in my teen years, i definitely would have bought it and i still would.

The book mostly follows Hero, with some other POVs added in there too. In the beginning of the book you get Hero's childhood in bits and pieces, working up to him being around 17-20 for the rest of the book. I loved seeing how he copes with everything he went through. It's not the typical "the hero is always strong" which made this more believable, having Hero show vulnerability, insecurity and growing into the person he is later in the book.

Flash's POV is only a short part of the book, but it had me intrigued and i'm hoping there will be more of him in the sequels.

Emily was a nice addition to the book. Her back and forth with Hero felt very natural and i just loved her character in general.

It's very adventure driven, in a world that's completely different from the world we know today. Water and food is scarce. The world is like a wasteland. There are different groups of people trying to survive, but also freaks (similar to zombies) that make the world a more dangerous place. What i love about the writing here is that the surroundings/objects/people are explained in a way that you will have no problem imagining it.

I would recommend this book without hesitation, whether someone is a teen or an adult. I'm looking forward to the next part in Hero's story.

If you’re looking for something that feels like a blend of Waterworld and Mad Max, wrapped in a compelling YA voice, then this is absolutely a book you should pick up.

It delivers the harshness and tension of an apocalyptic world while balancing it with the raw innocence and emotional intensity of teenage characters trying to survive within it.

There are genuinely gripping moments, scenes that carry real weight, yet the story never loses that youthful perspective that gives it heart and accessibility.

What I appreciated most is how readable it is. It’s engaging enough for adults, yet perfectly suited as a gift for a younger reader who’s ready for high-stakes adventure with emotional depth. That crossover appeal is not easy to achieve.

Not every stylistic choice fully resonated with me, but that’s the beauty of books, reading is subjective, and what doesn’t work for one reader may be exactly what captivates another.

All in all, this is a strong debut. I would wholeheartedly encourage readers to give it a chance. I’m very curious to see what the author does next.

Hero: Journey to the East by Martin Busscher is one of those books that reminds you why YA science fiction can be so powerful. It had me hooked beginning to end. Yes, it’s an incredible read for teenage boys, but it is absolutely not limited to them. Girls will love it. Adults will love it. Anyone who enjoys rich characters, big themes, and cinematic storytelling will find something here.

The characters are what really sold this for me. Hero is compelling, thoughtful, and believable, and the people he meets along the road feel fully realised rather than just background figures. Their choices matter, their sacrifices hit hard, and the emotional weight sits beautifully alongside the high-stakes action.

Tonally, this gave me serious Mad Max vibes, with the sweeping scope and moral questions of Dune and the mythic journey feel of Star Wars. As a massive Dune fan, this was completely my thing, immersive, reflective, and quietly powerful beneath all the danger and momentum.

Although it’s marketed as YA, this is one of those books that deserves to be celebrated as cross-generational science fiction. It explores loyalty, compassion, doubt, and hope in a way that feels especially relevant right now. I genuinely think we’re seeing the rise of romantic science fiction, stories that care just as much about emotional truth as they do about world-building.

I already know my students are going to love this, and I cannot wait to read it with them. A gripping journey, a thoughtful hero, and a story that stays with you long after the final page.

In deze dystopische setting (Mad Max meets YA) volgen we Hero op een eenzame en gevaarlijke reis naar een groen paradijs waarvan het bestaan nooit bewezen is.
De worldbuilding is goed neergezet, van de nomadische 'Swifters' tot de gevreesde 'Freaks' (die mensen vetmesten voor consumptie) je voelt bijna de hitte en de wanhoop van het landschap.
Hero groeit op met een droom, met zijn ouders en Falcon, de zonne-auto die hij met zijn vader bouwde, naar Eden vertrekken. Na een brute aanval op zijn dertiende blijft hij alleen achter met niets anders dan die droom en Falcon. Onderweg sluit hij aan bij een groep Swifters maar hoort er nooit helemaal bij.
Wat dit verhaal emotionele diepgang geeft, is de innerlijke strijd van Hero. Wanneer hij rond zijn twintigste weer alleen komt te staan, wordt hij geplaagd door hallucinaties en een zwaar overlevingsschuldgevoel. De komst van Emily zorgt voor een keerpunt. Hun moeizame begin en de weg naar onderling vertrouwen is midden in alle actie heel menselijk en beschreven.
De auteur schrijft in korte hoofdstukken en wisselt tussen perspectieven, waardoor het tempo er goed in blijft. Hij schuwt de wreedheid van deze nieuwe wereld niet, maar houdt ook focus op de emotionele groei van zijn personages. Hoewel het einde flink wat vragen achterlaat, zorgt dit er wel voor dat ik benieuwd bennaar het volgende deel.

Emily’s arrival marks a turning point. Their difficult start and the road to trusting eachother is described in a very human way amidst all the action.
​The author writes in short chapters and alternates between pov's, keeping the pace fast. He does not shy away from the cruelty of this new world but also maintains a focus on the emotional growth of his characters. Although the ending leaves quite a few questions unanswered, it certainly makes me curious about the sequel.
​An interessting YA dystopian story that will also captivate adult readers. A story about loss, but above all, about continuing to drive toward the horizon, no matter how barren the road may be.

Ik kreeg de kans om Hero: Journey to the East te lezen en er een review over te schrijven, en het was echt een leuke leeservaring.

Vanaf het begin zit er meteen actie in het verhaal, waardoor je direct in het boek wordt getrokken. Het tempo ligt vrij hoog, waardoor het verhaal vlot blijft doorlopen en je steeds verder wilt lezen om te ontdekken wat er gaat gebeuren.

Wat ik ook fijn vond, is dat het verhaal gemakkelijk te volgen is. De schrijfstijl is duidelijk en toegankelijk, waardoor je zonder moeite in het avontuur meegezogen wordt. Dat maakt het een boek dat heel prettig leest en waarbij je snel door de pagina’s gaat.

Voor mij was dit gewoon een heel leuk en fast-paced avontuur. Als je houdt van actie en een verhaal dat je aandacht meteen pakt, dan is dit zeker een aanrader. Ik ben in ieder geval benieuwd naar het volgende boek en hoe het verhaal verder zal gaan.

I received this book from the author, Martin Busscher which I really appreciated!

I really liked the start. It throws you straight into an intense moment, and the writing is very visual. I could picture everything so clearly. It almost felt cinematic at times.

We follow Hero after a traumatic event during a time of war, and I enjoyed the focus on his emotional growth. The first half flowed really well for me. In the second half I felt it slowed down a bit, and I personally wanted a little more depth to fully connect, but that might just be my preference, since I tend to read darker fantasy.

Overall, a solid YA-leaning survival story with a strong emotional core.

Ik vond dit boek prachtig in iedere manier ik voelde de ups en downs van alle karakters. Het voelde gewoon alsof het mijn vrienden waren ! Dit is op een hele gave manier geschreven je zit er gewoon helemaal in. Hero is een sterke jongen die heel veel heeft meegemaakt… hij een echte “Hero” er komt kannibalisme en moord in voor. Het gaat over een jonge genaamd Hero die een belofte heeft gemaakt naar zijn ouders.. in het oosten is hem een paradijs beloofd. Hij zal wel een weg moeten afleggen naar het oosten toe.. in die weg zijn er meerdere opstakels… meerdere groepen, swiffers, freaks en nog meer… uiteindelijk zal hij offers en keuzes moeten maken..

‘Hero: Journey to the east’ speelt zich af in een dystopische wereld. Een genre die nieuw voor mij is, dus ik wist niet zeker of ik dit boek leuk zou gaan vinden.

Ik werd echt meteen in het verhaal gezogen, omdat het gelijk begint met actie. Dit blijft ook het hele boek terugkomen, hierdoor wilde ik steeds verder lezen en kon ik het boek niet wegleggen. De omgeving en de ‘Freaks’ worden zo omschreven dat je je echt kan voorstellen hoe deze dystopische wereld eruit ziet.

Zeker een aanrader voor jongeren (maar ook voor volwassen)! Ik kijk uit naar deel 2 en het vervolg van het verhaal.
