Crushing on a hot alpha doctor isn't in Eric Blake's plans when he goes to a clinic to fix his weird heats.

Unfortunately, it seems that won’t be easy, and Dr. Randall suggests an… experimental treatment that will also help the doctor’s research. It’s unorthodox, but it’s not personal. And no matter how good the alpha smells to him or how much Eric starts needing him, he knows Dr. Randall will never see him as an omega worthy of mating.

Disillusioned with mating after his disastrous marriage, Hugh Randall wants to prove that true mates don’t really exist. He'll never get mated again and his interest in Eric is purely professional. He'll fix him, and they'll go their separate ways.

At least, that was the plan. But along the way, the lines get blurred, and what starts as a scientific experiment turns into something else. Something very much unprofessional. Something that might ruin their lives…

"Just the tip,” Eric begged, sucking on Hugh’s scent gland. “Just the tip. Please. Give me the tip.” 😏

Book 4, or shall we say Eric’s story "Expert” picks up where we left off in Illicit (book 3). After being supposedly exiled from Pelugia due to an unexpected scandal, Eric seeks refuge and comfort at the Cleghorn estate in Kadar. Eric, for those of you who don’t remember (well, because it’s been so long since we read the last book in the series), is the youngest Blake brother. A lovely, impressionable, intelligent, and beautifully awkward omega. This is his story, and his sexy doc, Hugh Randall, is a big part of that.

Eric is 18 years old, while Hugh is in his early 30s; there is a slight age gap between the mains, which makes the story more interesting. Eric is new in Kadar, and aside from being the subject of a humiliating scandal, he also has health issues related to his heating cycle. Eric is excessively horny, and the poor dear needs an alpha to keep him balanced and steady. Who better to come to his aid than the sexy, reserved, and stern alpha doctor?

The first encounter between Eric and Hugh is through a “manual examination,” up close and personal. Our handsome alpha doctor is captivated by Eric, who is all over the place due to hormonal imbalance. Doctor Randall tries to be professional with Eric; after all, he is a “kid,” a patient, nothing more, nothing less. But Hugh’s alpha instincts, which he tries to suppress at times, kick in and blur the lines between a patient and his doctor. An attraction between a needy omega and a protective alpha seems inevitable. Alessandra does a great job of showing that between Eric and Hugh, especially with Hugh trying so hard to resist the temptation that is Eric. We see Hugh’s self-composed professional demeanor coming undone when interacting with Eric. There is no denying that the good doctor wants Eric, the awkward omega. However, a bad marriage from Hugh’s past discourages him from taking things further with Eric. Although the doc is a walking contradiction, lol. He can’t seem to say no when it comes to Eric. The age gap and Hugh’s lack of belief in having a true mate create angst, tension, and challenges for Eric and his alpha-to-be. Much of the angst and tension in the story is in Part I of the story (the story is told in two parts). Part I was the part I highly enjoyed. Eric’s neediness, Hugh’s sternness, and the development of emotions between them made for good angst, which I think most readers will enjoy.

Part II of the story was somewhat unexpected (you will know what I mean when you read it). It was a bit rushed and relatively short. Had the angst and emotional development been explored more in part II, this would have easily been a 5-star read. But unfortunately, part II wasn’t what I thought it would be.

I sincerely hope Lucien gets his own book; he makes an appearance in this book. I enjoyed him being supportive and a friend to Eric. They are similar, and their friendship was enjoyable to read about. So, if you enjoyed Lucien in the first book, you would enjoy reading this book, where he is a supportive side character.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. Much better than Feral and Illicit. There is an age gap, codependency, neediness, and angst, so my fellow AH readers, you will like this book since those are recurring themes/tropes in AH’s books. I am glad Eric got his own story; he is probably the most likable brother of the Blake brothers. I hope you like him as much as I did.

Expert will be released later this week. Happy reading!

Thank you very much to Alessandra Hazard for providing the ARC, I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

"gods, he wanted to kiss him so badly. so fucking badly. he wanted to consume him. consume him and be consumed by him."

✦ you can always count on Alessandra Hazard to write a book that you just can't put down until you finish it. the possessiveness, obsessiveness, codependency and neediness in her books always do it for me.

✦ this was a typical AH book and i was heeeere for it. however, as usual with any AH book, i was left craving moreeee. i swear, if she ever writes at least at 350 page book with a deeper relationship development i will literally combust on the spot.

✦ anyways, these two were so damn cute!!! they gave me so many feels. the angst made my heart hurt a little at times. the longing, the pining... wow. they both seemed like such lonely souls who finally found comfort and love in each other despite it taking a while... the random time jump took me out though lmao. i literally gasped when i turned the page.

✦ i will probably always be one of those people who picks up AH's books the day they drop. i truly still don't know what it is about this author's books that make them so damn addictive, but i'm sure y'all get me.

Book one and two are still my all time favorites. But this story did manage to redeem whatever the hell happened with book three.

Eric becomes trapped in a nasty scandal that leads to him and his family being harassed. The only way to avoid all the prying eyes is to move away and let everything die down. But this solution leaves Eric feeling incredibly alone. Not only is he now in a strange place but his heats have also been getting out of control and he has no idea what to do. Eventually he decides that he should see a doctor.

Dr. Randall (Hugh) has followed one goal during the course of his career. He strives to prove that true mates don’t actually exist. A result of a freak experience/accident he had when he was younger. And once Eric walks into his clinic and Hugh sees his issue he may have a proposal for him, one beneficial for the both of them. Eric’s condition requires him to find a compatible mate and fast, otherwise his heats will just continue to become uncontrollable.

But finding a mate is the last thing Eric wants, he doesn't even know where to start looking. Then Hugh suddenly says he may not need a mate after all, if his experiment works and he’s able to prove that Omegas don’t actually need a live Alpha during their heats, just the pheromones. And they don’t need a live Alpha to mate since it’s all just biology connected through their pheromones. Eric agrees to the proposal since it’s the only option he really has. However, their experiment doesn’t go as planned.

I really enjoyed this book!! Eric was a nice character to follow, he may be computer smart but he’s not very street smart which was shown through how he got so lost and confused a long way from home. He already never liked to be on his own, he never liked big gatherings or celebrations and now the scandal just makes everything ten times worse. And Hugh was like a solid rock that just held Eric’s life in place, he helped slow everything down so Eric could catch up.

There is an age gap between them of fifteen years, which I didn’t think was that bad at all, I honestly thought it was gonna be worse. The only thing I didn’t like was how Hugh kept calling Eric “kid” and wouldn’t shut up about how young he was. And that their relationship was a mistake because Eric didn’t know what he was doing. Which thankfully is brought up in a conflict between them, I would have flipped if it wasn’t mentioned at all. But some of the joy of their relationship was taken away by me just wanting to take Hugh, shake him, and say, “he’s an adult! Capable of making his own decisions!!!”

Anyway, this book was pretty good. I think I’ll move on to something else for now but I’m glad to end on a good note.

Age gap, doctor/patient, time jump, ABO world, and all the cheesy tropey Alessandra Hazard goodness.

If you haven’t read this author, then you need to know that she loves to write stories that should make you feel uncomfortable. Boundaries are always pushed and every sex scene should make you slightly ashamed that you’re into it. This one is par for the course and just about everything I love from AH. Honestly, if there’s something I don’t really like when I read one of her books I assume I just had my expectations up too high. That’s not a dig at all either; she knows what she’s good at and she churns out these books for our entertainment.

The ABO universe she has created is so perfect for all of these vaguely uncomfortable tropes too. You can’t be too mad at the doctor crossing boundaries because there’s no other good solution in this world. You can’t be too mad about an age gap when they live so long, there’s inherent compatibility, etc. There’s an answer for everything and it toes the line between naughty and gross. Let’s be honest, if you’ve been in this genre for a few months then this is practically tame.

I’ve read people are upset with the “first time” and the time jump so I’ll give my take. The time jump felt necessary for me. Hugh might never have believed Eric’s love for him if it was only based of the imprint and of course we have the previous mating bond to consider. Is it convenient? Yes, but who cares? Everything about this book was convenient for plot purposes. As for their first times after seeing each other again…it felt like it happened exactly how it should have and only served to show they were not just compatible, but this world’s version of fated mates.

As always for an AH book, it’s insanely readable and hot in a dirty way.

Would I recommend to anyone I know? No.
Would I reread it? Yes.
Will I read anything she puts out. Absolutely.

Expert is the 4th book in the cracktastic The Wrong Alpha series by the mistress of addictive writing, Alessandra Hazard, so you know I had to read it the second it was published.

Was it my favorite book she's written? No
Did I get my fix in? YES.

Be prepared for a strangely long time jump. Probably my least favorite part of the story. Also, this is (dare I say) lower steam for an Alessandra Hazard book. It takes awhile for these two to finally get it on. Freaking Hippocratic oath...

However, I still enjoyed the hell out of it. It's probably more like 3.5 stars but I'm feeling generous today :)

Probably the longest book to be released on my TBR and wasted my time waiting on it.

It started out okay, but then it become a little meh, and when the storyline reached part 2, it went down to the bottom of the hill. It’s a surprise I couldn’t enjoy a book by Hazard. It wasn’t as exciting, hot and sexy as the previous ones.

Their connection was barely there despite the proximity and plotline. It was explained in a way that they were solemnly in it for the experiment and Eric’s disorder. Sure, Hugh cares about him, but the constant denials were so much to the point where I couldn’t pinpoint if they fit together. No emotional connection at all. Not even the repetitive sweet nothings could help.

***SPOILERS AHEAD.***

At first I thought the 3 years time jump was unnecessary I was so numb reading it. I hated everything. It gave no purpose; the marriage, fucking Greg but THANK GOD it was explained later (couldn’t wait until I was numb-er) But I was still pissed because of the lacking of depth on the last 20%. So I would say this was rather disappointing than me having mixed feelings.

The “marry someone else” trope. Why are we doing this ridiculous plotline again?

Then, after the 3 years time jump they fall back into sex. Probably should’ve write this longer with a fully drafted plotline than 200+ pages with lacking of chemistry. I was so numb reading the epilogue. GG.

Surprise, surprise. It was only sex for them till the end.

Updated review Jan 28th 2023:

Alessandra Hazard, the GALL of this woman to end a book with "and they lived happily ever after."

She's kinda mother for that.

I love that compared to other series (Straight Guys and Calluvia Royalty), the omegaverse is where her writing really shines, since the genre has turned more or less into an ironic sandbox analysis of gender roles and patriarchal norms surrounding intimacy. Who's best equipped for that sort of thing but cishet women? I cringed-laughed at "omegasexual", the feeling exhilarating—the woman who invented omegaverse in Supernatural fandom all those years ago must be feeling the same as she realizes it has come full circle and the other cishet women who wrote ABO finally invented lesbians.

I'm looking forward for Lucien's story, moobs and all. But since the culmination of his story is already laid out in the epilogue here, I'm intrigued to see how hindsight will affect the storytelling in the next book.

As for the next one in the Straight Guys series... Does the synopsis from the last book give too much "The Sheikh" (1921) vibes, or is it just me?

Early "review" left on the day this book was announced:

Okay but when is Aksel and Lucien's story coming out?? Girl I'm still haunted by that scene in book #1!!

Late to the party since this released a while ago, but this story reminded me not to give up on the author (after several, several, several flops in a row).

Is it a masterpiece of the romance genre? Well, no.

Is it cliche, melodramatic, "blink and the plot falls apart"? Well, yes!

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Plus, the lack of actual mpreg was a positive for me. I read omegaverse for the knotting, not the offspring.

This book is full of longing and sweet moments, also second guessing and regrets. Eric is the youngest brother of Liam and Jules (Feral and Illicit) who is in the lowest point of his life. Lucky for him, he met with the cold hearted Hugh ( my new favorite nasty doctor) who is in need of protecting and to care for someone. Of course the plot is twisting and turning and and they need to grow and fight to find their happiness… It’s not just smut, while the heat level is amazing, the story itself pulled me in.
This book is on my “couldn’t put it down, I bringe read it till the end” shelf.

I think Lucien’s story is next and I can’t wait to read about him.

I received Expert’s ARC by the Author and this is my honest review.

I don’t know what it says about me that I’m so into the fragile young omega being cared for by the strong older alpha, but OMG I WANT MORE.

Hot, sweet, emotional, wrong and infuriating. I was so mad at Hugh. But he delivered in the end, with a belated but perfect HEA.

The last time I read a setup this ridiculous was in Matehub when the author came up with the most hilariously stupid porn plots for the sole purpose of bringing her audience to tears from laughing and making her characters question all their life choices. Here tho? I’m not sure if Alessandra Hazard intended for us to take this serious, because I really couldn’t. It was just so on the nose. *lmfaoooo

“The bad news is, [...] I’m confident that you have hypersexual disorder, Type 3.”

“Strictly speaking, it’s not sex your biology craves. […] Your body needs certain pheromones produced only by alphas.”

I’m honestly a bit embarrassed for how much I was into it still. But the desperation between the characters this author writes so addictively well is my catnip. I couldn’t help myself.

“I’ve got you, sweetheart,” Hugh murmured into his ear. “You’re not alone, I’m here for you.

“Just the tip,” Eric begged, sucking on Hugh’s scent gland. “Just the tip. Please. Give me the tip.”

I must say, I feel a tiny bit lost now that is nothing more to read for me in this series.

Freaking delicious.
Alessandra Hazard never disappoints.

Eric and Hugh's story was what I was hoping it to be, and then some: it's a forbidden relationship, soulmate romance at its finest and I enjoyed the hell out of it, start to finish.

"Expert" is packed with pining and yearning, banter and heartache and love. It's also packed with all the usual, delicious, steamy omegaverse treats (knotting, heats, scent marking, possessiveness and neediness? Inject it into my veins thanks!).
"Unnatural" and "Feral" are still my favourite books in this series (also, it was sooooo lovely to see Hadyn and Royce again, and that Jules/Devlin scene at the end was everything; maybe I should do a re-read?), but I adored this one too. I'm so looking forward to reading the next book: I already know that finally seeing Lucien get his well-deserved HEA will be priceless.

🌶️🌶️🌶️

It’s hard to decide between this and Feral as to which is my favorite in the series so they’ll just have to share the spot at the top.

In the previous book, Eric the youngest brother was caught up in a scandal when an alpha posted a salacious picture of him online. Not only did it ruin his reputations and send him to another planet, but it caused his heats to go out of whack.

So he visits a doctor and we meet Hugh, a sexy af alpha that wants to disprove the theory that their hormones rule their relationships (in a convoluted nutshell because I’m not sure I can explain it better.)

The chemistry between them is undeniable even when Hugh uses hormone blockers. A mixture of miscommunication and things beyond their control keep them apart even while they desperately try to pull each other in.

It’s sweet, emotional, fun and so stinking hot. This gave me everything I love and want from this series.

I’m so excited for the next one when Lucien finally gets his man!!

I feel like I can be a little harsh considering I’ve rated the other novels in this series higher and I enjoyed them a LOT more than this one.
Between the indecisive, over the top alpha, the whiny childish omega, and the EXCESSIVE ridiculous and weirdly placed time jump (I mean THREE YEARS TO FIGURE OUT HE WAS YOUR SOUL MATE PUH-LEASEEEEEE) this installment was a big fat disappointment.
Nothing happened. Just the repetition of a scandal that happened A BOOK AGO, and only “resolved” in like 2 paragraphs???? And then ANOTHER “scandal” that brought them together???

And for the last three books Eric was characterized as the smart, studios, tech nerd and we got NONE of that??? That was supposedly his WHOLE personality???? Also that he was socially awkward—again none of that??? HUH!??!!!

This was lazy, and unnecessary, and sucky.

The first part of the book was kinda "meh". They didn't really talk, I mean the author told us they would talk on the phone for hours, but we never really saw that, I didn't feel the connection... But the later part resonate with me so much that bumped this book from 3 stars to almost 4.
If you love Alessandra's books you won't be disappointed, it's your typical Alessandra format and I'm happy with it.

AH books are so fun and her omegaverse world is a fav of mine 💙💙💙 Hugh and Eric were great, I loved the doctor/patient dynamic and Hugh’s endearments he used for Eric were A++

It doesn’t come close to topping Unnatural for me, which is a forever fav of mine in this series and in the whole AHverse, but I still enjoyed it very much ☺️

Alessandra Hazard is back! Her brand of neediness, obsessiveness, possessiveness is constant in Expert. I could not get enough of Eric and Hugh. I needed more of them (but then I always need more of AH characters).

"He lifted his gaze to Hugh's eyes and whispered, "Thank you. You're so good to me". Hugh's nostrils flared, his gaze darkening and the air thickening with his pheromones. Eric breathed them deeply, greedily, pleasure making him almost lightheaded". "

After an unfortunate incident, Eric (youngest brother of the Blake family) needed a Alpha/Omega doctor (Hugh Randall) to help with his condition. And help he did! Eric and Hugh story was full of angst, smut, intensity, and several surprises. A few times, I wanted to yell at the characters but then I also wanted to hug them. Hugh thought he wasn't the typical Alpha, not realizing Eric would break his boundaries. Also the plot was very engaging, which I greatly appreciated after reading Illicit. The doctor/patient relationship was also done so well. You could feel how forbidden it was. It was also nice to read about the other brothers and Lucien. I really hope we get to read Lucien's story. Again, I needed more of Eric and Hugh! Their journey was just satisfying!

Ugh. This book is a mess.

First, I hate time skips. HATE them, especially as late in the book as this one is. But this rating isn’t just for that.

There isn’t much relationship development beyond the Alpha/omega pheromones. I just felt like I was missing something.

This author usually writes some smokin hot sex no matter how bad the rest of the book is but in this one it was seriously not great.

The last 15% of the book had a shit ton of tying up crammed into it and it was super rushed and a lot of things were glossed over.

And not having the epilogue from Eric or Hugh’s perspective is a crime.

And not having the mating/biting/bonding sex scene included when this is a fucking book about Alphas and omegas mating.

I just.

I don’t wanna read anything new this year. I’m so tired of the trend of quantity overriding the quality in MM authors.

The Wrong Alpha is a sci-fi omegaverse romance series sans shifters. For me, Expert is the strongest in the series so far.

The romance is between Eric, an omega who is having trouble with his heats, and his doctor Hugh, an alpha who doesn't believe in true mates after a bad experience in his past.

This is definitely the hottest in the series. The angst between Eric and Hugh was perfect. There's a forbidden romance aspect as Hugh was his doctor .

I loved the push and pull of their relationship. There were so many reasons for them not to get together, and they tried to listen to them but their attraction to each other was just too strong. They're just hooking up to help Eric with his heats, but of course they catch feelings no matter how hard they try to deny them.

I would like to get a bit more world-building, but it's a romance so it doesn't bother me too much.

I was going through my downloaded tbr and was just casually scrolling (because that's the life of someone who has been HOPELESS with books lately) and then I saw this cover---more like, I saw the author, and I was like:

WTF??!! I HAVEN'T READ THIS YET??!!!!

I literally looked at the piles of homework I had in front of me and glanced back at this book and then proceeded to lay down and say fuck it, and started reading.

Now this book.....

3.5 stars ✨⭐⭐⭐⭐

Man, I don't know if I like it or if I'm just smiling to mask the pain.

It was good! I even finished it in one day (don't get me started because I think this was a first y'all for this year 😭😭😭) and Dr Hugh was so deliciously fun to read, I was like: TAKE ALL MY RIGHTS AND DIGNITY. I DONT NEED THEM.

Eric on the other hand though.....

What's a nice way of saying, I don't care about your opinions so can you pls go drown in the river (?)

No? too polite? Damn.

I'm just happy this book made me feel something and because this book is the work of Alexandra's. I'll never not admire and love her work. I really am hoping she's gonna work on Master's series this year 😭😭😭 it's been like 5 years already 😭😭😭 I need SOMEONE'S, ANYONE'S BOOK IN THAT SERIES. I miss Castien!!!!

And apparently Lucien's book is next, so 3 questions.

1. Isn't his mate already resolved in Unnatural (Royce's brother??????)

2. Are we even excited?? 😭😭 Cus I don't know if I even am.

3. Why does AH's recent epilogues include a POV from someone NOT within the couple???!!! 😭😭😭 Uhhhh, ma'am???!!

I love this whole series, which revolves around inappropriate, obsessive love. This time around it's doctor/patient, with Eric and his doctor Hugh falling for each other. The only reason why I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that I hate the number of obstacles in the way of their relationship. They both seem to have procrastinated fixing those issues on their own and so by the time they want to be together they have limited options and are stuck being apart. I hate romances that are focused on reuniting when the timing is better. The book is good and the ending is super cute, but I hate the time they had to spend apart, miserable without each other. (to be fair Hugh's problem is a more difficult one to solve but it seems like he's just given up and resigned himself to being alone forever)

I understand this is a me problem.

In this book, the parallels between the patriarchy, misogyny, and feminism in our real life world were far too close and not in a good way. Gettin’ a little too “tradwife” here for me. I know that the omegaverse can be pretty misogynistic at its core but there’s still things to enjoy but this was just a bit too close for me.

Alessandra Hazard writes completely addicting, hot as fuck books with possessive and obsessive characters and I feel like that was missing here and couldn’t make up for the things I hated. Alessandra Hazard even gets ME to read books where mpreg is possible! I hate mpreg! I hate all preg!

Honestly though, Eric deserved better. Poor guy!

It was a steep downhill drop from there.
