So I received this arc late...and I finished it late. BUT it was certainly worth the read.
The couple was adorable, though I dislike that everything got wrapped up and cleared up so quickly. The last section felt like a whirlwind of everything moving VERY quickly, and a little too swift for some of the things.
But the story was cool and unique enough that there was nothing I rolled my eyes at. I like pirate stories, especially ones with action, and this one had a fair amount of action involved (even if it wasn't as heightened in emotion as I prefer).
The side characters were very good, too, and now I need to go read the prequel!
I could probably say more and do a better review but the point is: If you'd like a clean pirate book with elves and an "enemies"-to-lovers romance, this is a great book for you!

ARC Review - The Hostage and the Elf Pirate by Eliza Prokopovits.
Book 1 in the Pirates of the Faren Sea series. I loved this story so much. It has a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe and captured my interest from the start. I will also highly recommended to read the prequel, The Baker and the Elf Pirate to get into the series with another sweet story and getting more on the characters in book 1.
Missy is a great character and her stubborn attitude was fun to follow and see how she develops throughout the book.
This is a clean romance with no spice. The endearment, love and yearning was top tier and left me smiling and also wanting to giggle with the characters.
Eliza’s writing is flowing and easy to read. I will recommend to anyone who enjoys a book with adventure, amazing found family and forced proximity, I cannot wait for the second book.

Why was this broody elf pirate meets sunshine human sweet, cozy romance SO GOOD? Let's see if I can put it into words:
- a grumpy MMC that is not actually grumpy, just grieving and secretly helpful and adorable
- a sunshine FMC that is pure joy and not at all annoying
- HILARIOUS banter between our FMC and a ship full of pirate elves (elf pirates?)
- a friendship that is authentic, sister-like, and one where they are always on each others' side
- baked goods
- strong elf pirates with soft hearts
- real emotional struggles that don't leave you feeling hopeless
- very satisfying resolutions
- "rhylin" 🥰
I loved this book.

Profanity: None. Curse words are always tagged as 'he swore' or something similar rather than using the actual word.
Violence: High mild-low moderate. There are multiple battles against privateers on a ship. Mostly it's just yells, clanging weapons and such. But once a character is killed on screen with a knife in his throat with some blood spatter onto another character. It's not described past that. Sea creatures attack ships, peril throughout. A creature gets a knife in the eye. A character is stabbed shallowly in the side. Some blood is on his shirt/waistcoat. There is talk of killing people or not killing them, as well as obvious talk of past fights where people have been killed.
Sexual: High mild. Mistresses are discussed and appear on page (not in a sexual way, just as proof they exist). Illegitimate children are also discussed. It is implied that a woman isn't safe in her cabin from sailors who haven't seen a woman in months unless the door is locked (nothing ever happens). A man leers at a woman in a lascivious manner. There is talk of fertility differences in humans vs. elves, nothing beyond how long it can take to conceive. Being held protectively, female's back flush against the chest of a man. Touching hair in a loving way to tie it back and just stroking it. Hand holding and hugging for comfort. Whispering in ears. At minimum a half dozen kisses or more on the lips, corner of mouth, cheeks, hair, etc. A man runs a finger down a woman's neck and to the 'dip in her colarbone'. A woman unties a man's hair while kissing to run her hands through it. Heated kissing without more detail than remarks like 'we should get married soon' and 'you make me feel too much' and 'feeling butterflies in the stomach'.
Triggers: Kidnap and anxiety from waking up in an unfamiliar place. Some claustrophobic-like moments Loss of family and loved ones; grief and trauma from that loss. Unfaithfulness and adultry off-page.
Wowzer. This was a ride! I was very happy to get an ARC from the author (my review is totally honest regarless FYI) because I so enjoyed the prequel story "The Baker and the Elf Pirate".
This story is set 4 years or so after the events of the prequel, and follow Missy, the cousin of the protagonist from the prequel, Margot.
It all starts with Missy getting kidnapped from her room by an elf pirate captain. He plans to ransom her from her fiance, the human Lord of Commerce, who is a fierce enemy of the pirate elves. Missy is set up as a character who always 'gets her way' and is charismatic and charming. This is immediatley shown in how she befriends the pirates simply by being herself. They know she's genuine, as they've been around a long time (the aging of the elves is about 10 to 1 in this world, so a 250 year old elf is equal to a 25 year old human).
No one is more drawn to Missy than the Captain of the pirate ship. Kildran fights the entire story to keep his distance from Missy, to not notice how much he likes her, to make sure he doesn't do more than like her.
I'm sure I don't need to tell anyone how that turns out. hehehe.
The way the plot unfolds is enjoyable, from the decks of the Dusk Runner, to the port towns they make berth in, to taverns, to islands, and everything in-between. It's an adventure, and it's charming. I enjoyed it immensely and it was easy to read and get caught up in.
And the side characters made me happy. We get cameos from Margot and Alvon, as well as meet new characters that are endearing and lovely. I loved the friendship and trust displayed from the side characters, especially Cosar and Brandor.
One thing I never got a satisfactory answer to though, which is kind of a big deal: why are they pirates anyways? What is the story behind that choice? What do they do with the loot? I kept expecting an explaination, a Robin Hood type story of giving to the poor or something. Nope. It's barely touched on. I'm hoping that will change in later stories. At this point it just feels like a way to romanticize the elves in this even more? A little irritating for me, but didn't stop my enjoyment.
what threw me a bit was the romance. Missy and Kildran are a will-they-won't-they mess through 80% of the book. But it's not annoying, it's understandable because of the hang-ups they both have to sort through. The thing that got me was when the decision finally gets made. They went from longing looks and almost moments to being unable to not touch/kiss each other every second. On the one hand, I know couples like that when everything is all new and lovely in the reciprocity of feelings. On the other hand...I got a little uncomfortable at the amount of making out and kissing happening on page.
But it was still clean! I'm just not a fan of PDA, even in books. Just my preference. I like one to three swoony kisses, and I'm good. More than that and my discomfort grows every time. One kiss in particular (spoiler here) But nothing ever happens past that level of intensity.
And I was sooooo happy to get a little bit of the next book in the series at the end that features I love me a Love that trope.

This is my first ARC in a while, and I was not disappointed! I'd already read the prequel (which you can access through Miss Eliza's newsletter), but this one held its own!
First things first, I'm glad she kept the sailing aspect simple. Sometimes I get lost if an author is too passionate about including EVERYTHING about life on a ship, but Eliza handled it rather well.
Missy was such a charming heroine. Her brightness sometimes lended itself to immaturity, but she learned well and didn't make too much of a fuss (other than the things she should've fussed about because KIDNAPPING).
Kildran took a little to warm up to, but as that was the case with Missy's perception of him, I consider that a plus. He has such a heart of gold (pun half-intended), and his arc was so lovely. Having to learn how to love even with the threat of loss was hard for him, but it was handled well.
I have to say, even though in the first half they barely spent any time together, their tension was rife in every stolen glance and chance meeting! There wasn't a boring moment, I'll tell you that.
And one of the reasons it was so exciting happened to be the side characters! I loved how fast they warmed up to Missy (who wouldn't, honestly). Brandor's candor and Cosar's stoicism kept things interesting, especially since both were very friendly.
Seeing Margot and Alvon again was fun too! They are, as Missy described, adorable.

This was such a fun story, and it was written so well that I enjoyed every moment of reading it. There was just the right amount of action and peril mixed with tender and humorous moments, not to mention a delightful slow-burn, no-spice, enemies-to-lovers romance.
I also loved every character! Missy, the FMC, spent the story learning who she really was outside of the comforts and expectations of the society she grew up in, and discovered the bravery, strength, and determination she possessed that had never had a chance to be seen and used before. Kildran, the MMC, was such a real softy on the inside, who spent the story learning to let down the walls he’d built up to protect his heart from the pain of loss, having experienced much in his life. The side characters were all wonderful additions to the story as well, and I am looking forward to reading more about the characters in the next book!
This was book 1 in the series, however, I strongly feel that anyone who wants to read this story should read the prequel first, as it really sets up the world and some of the characters in a significant way. It was also a really great read, so don’t deny yourself of reading more of this fantastic series!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who likes sweet romance stories, reading about characters developing hidden strengths, books set on a pirate ship (and without swearing or excessive gore/violence,) and cozy fantasy that highlights compassion.

The Hostage and the Elf Pirate was such a fun story!!! I have loved everything that I’ve read by Eliza Prokopovits, and this was no exception!! It had so many of the things I love in a story: adventure, a hateable villain, clean enemies to lovers romance, elves, and a full cast of wonderful characters!!
Missy was such a fun FMC! I enjoyed her fire, liveliness, and determination to not be a ‘watering pot heroine’. One part of her character that did annoy me was that she would keep pushing until she got what she wanted, regardless of how ridiculous or stupid said want was. However, her willingness to admit she was spoiled did soften my frustration with her; being able to admit your faults is a strength I admire.
Kildran was wonderful!! I loved his protectiveness, competence, loyalty, and tendency to notice even the smallest of Missy’s concerns and needs and meet them.
I loved how Missy and Kildran’s relationship grew, and seeing them decide to choose each other over all the difficulties, obstacles, and fears that could have kept them apart was beautiful and inspiring. I can’t wait to read Cosar’s story next!!

She was suddenly hostage on a pirate ship and trying to make sense of so many new things. I loved seeing her build relationships on the ship and find a new place for herself. Missy felt very real and I was rooting for her!
I felt for Kildran! He was focused, diligent, and intent on protecting himself from further loss. He had much loss already and I could understand his reluctance to be subject to further. Missy was a shock to his system, bringing dreams he had never considered before.

Melissa (Missy) Fisher is engaged and dreaming of sailing the world with her new husband, who travels frequently for his job. Then she wakes up on a pirate ship after being kidnapped by Captain Kildare Geldiri. It seems that her fiancee, Lord Cowell, has been targeting elves, including Kidare’s family and he wants to ransom her to get them back. Neither one of them is happy with the other, since Kildare has gone through a lot of family heartache and doesn’t let anyone in except his adopted parents and his foster brother and Missy isn’t too fond of kidnapping pirates. But being on a ship at sea is a big adventure for Missy and she is treated well by the crew, so she softens a bit about the whole kidnapping thing. Especially once she finds out more information about her fiancee and his behavior. It was lovely to see characters from the prequel story, and watch these two characters fight hard against their attraction, but there is a lovely conclusion where everything goes the way it should - at least in my opinion. There is no steam except a tiny bit towards the end, where there is some kissing, so I would describe this as a sweet romance. I look forward to the next book in the series, I’m interested to see how the unlikely pair mentioned will get together.

This book was lovely. Missy was sassy, clever, and perceptive as she struggled with being kidnapped by Kildran, captain of the Duskrunner and an elf pirate, due to being engaged to a nobleman, missing her family, and trying to come to terms with being at sea with her kidnappers for an undetermined amount of time. Kildran is reserved, observant, and loyal to his crew, his adoptive family, and wants to avoid Missy as much as possible, especially with her beautiful blue eyes. The interactions between the two main characters ranged from snarky, charged, thoughtful and sweet as the story progressed. I appreciated how Missy’s fear of being locked in and Kildran’s grief and fear of losing more he loved were handled with compassion and vulnerability and hated her nobleman fiance with the passion of a thousand suns. It was great to learn more about the differences between Elvish and human culture in this world and lovely to see familiar faces again from a related prequel novella (Margot and Alvon). Overall, great worldbuilding, complex characters, and sweet pirate / noblewoman romance with no spice.

As someone who read The Baker and the Elf Pirate first (the prequel novella), I was excited to know that Missy and Kildran were the main characters of this book. I loved how Missy carried herself with courage and dignity, and the relationships she built amid her circumstances. And Kildran was the kind of MMC I always fall for; rhe kind who has much more to him than meets the eye. They were both adorable, and the bond between them was developed with good pacing; however, I think I enjoyed the second half of the book more.
I also wanted to add that although I read Margot's story (the prequel) before diving into this one, I definitely appreciated it more after finishing The Hostage and the Pirate Elf. I'll be waiting for the next installment! 🤗

I enjoyed this book, but after this, I think I have quite enough of reading romance for a while 😆.
I liked The Baker and the Elf Pirate better than this one, but that is quite possibly just because it has less kissing than this one does… and I like Alvon better than Kildran 😁.
I recommend for 16+, merely because it is romance with a lot of kissing… and there are several mentions of the villain’s illicit activities.
I personally don’t think that teens should read a lot of romance (me included 😜😂), so I’m not sure I will recommend this to my friends… don’t think I will… it was a cute story, though!

I received an ARC of "The Hostage And The Elf Pirate". After having read Eliza's novella featuring Margot and Alvon's story, I was excited to know Eliza planned more stories in this world. I've loved several of her Regency Magic Faerie Tales books and enjoyed them all.

*squee* I got an ARC of this book and it's SO GOOD. If you subscribe to Eliza's newsletter there's an adorable (free!) prequel about her cousin, who is taking clandestine baking lessons when she bumps into an elf pirate. This one is so much fun! I've got highlighted sections and I love the respect so many characters show, as well as the great character development and good worldbuilding.
I love how each of the characters is distinct and Kildran/Missy aren't just Alvon/Margot recycled with new names and descriptions. They each have traits that make them relatable; strengths as well as traumas and things to work through that are very human (or elf, as the case may be). I love the different take on piracy and little pieces of backstory, as well as the hints for more books to come!

I love this story so much! There was a thrill of adventure seeing things through Missy’s eyes. It’s no wonder why Kildran fell in love with her! And then there’s moments that brought tears to my eyes towards the end of the book! I cannot wait to read the next book in the series! If you love the tropes Slow Burn, enemies-to-lovers, or Found Family, then add elves and pirates. I highly recommend giving this book a read!

The Hostage and the Elf Pirate by Eliza Prokopovits is a beautiful book about sacrifice and love.
I love the trope of kidn4pper and ho3tage. It surrounds the beautiful topes of forced proximity, enemies to lovers, and many more. The world building promises something more, the antics and the character arcs was beautiful. What does it mean to give up something in the name of love? I loved the difference in figuring what you want and what you are willing to sacrafice for it.
If you want a clean closed door romance with pirates and yearninggggg this is the one for you.

I was totally sold at pirates bc that's the theme I'm going for this summer & the theme delivers. The quick to action beginning was fun. The pirate theme was was kept PG. It's a quick story, 273 pages, so perfect for a summer read.

I can see this series will be amazing! 🤩 Kildran and Missy are amazing! Their constant banter and their emotions were so perfect. Kildran is afraid to love someone again, especially human friends, afraid he will lose them again and the pain afterward. Missy is more carefree and determined. She doesn't want to feel dependent on others and wants to enjoy herself. Also, how Kildran always gave her options. ❤️

*Happy sigh* This was quite a meaty read for me, and took a few days to read, but I truly savored every bite! If you haven't read the prequel novella (The Baker and the Elf Pirate), I totally recommend it. Those characters play prominently in this story, and it's fun to see how they started out.
Missy is spoiled, but not rotten. She thinks she's about to embark on her happily ever after...and is dismayed when she wakes up the morning after her engagement ball in a strange bed, on a pirate ship. Kildran is an elf, a pirate captain aboard the Dusk Runner....and the scoundrel that kidnapped Missy for ransom. (As this is a cozy fantasy romance, I'm sure you can guess where this story ends.)
I loved Missy and Kildran so much. Their backstory had enough drama to it to make me sit up and get invested, but enough easy-going acceptance of circumstances to keep it cozy and non-stressful. Eliza Prokopovits is a master of the kind of stories that make me want to cuddle up in a blanket with a cup of cocoa, and giggle over the sweet romance. Bravo!

Eliza does not disappoint. This second book in her Elf Pirate series has all the swashbuckling, enemies to lovers action you can ask for. This is a stand alone book, but reading her first Elf Pirate novella gives more background to a couple of the characters we meet. I loved the plucky heroine who acts tough and confident on the outside but is terrified on the inside. Something most of us can relate to. I highly recommend anything Eliza has written.

I like the author's style of writing, it makes me curious as to what will happen next, and I don't want to put the book down. Imagine going to sleep in your bed and then waking up on an elven pirate ship with no idea how you got there! That's what happens to Missy and, honestly, I think she handled it really well. This book is full of adventure and is a great escape. I loved how Kildran and Missy fight their feelings for each other, especially Kildran.
This is a really fun adventure with great characters. I very highly recommend it!

This book was such an enjoyable read. I was hooked on it from the very beginning and I stayed locked in until the last word was read. It was so engaging and captivating. We get adventure and intrigue and danger. Watching the connection and chemistry shared between Missy and Kildran was so endearing. Their relationship faced its ups and downs but it stood the test of time in the end. And what an ending it was. It felt absolutely perfect for them.

This is a cute, sweet romantasy. I did love the characters Kildran, Missy, Cosar and Brendar. I loved the relationships that were built. However there were a fee times the story felt slow or extended, so that’s why it’s 4 stars. I did like the theme of sacrifice for love and seeing past prejudices.
