ARC Review of Surviving Lily by M. Black

Surviving Lily is a Dark twisted psychological Thriller. This book does not have a boring moment in it. I was impressed by all the suspense in this book and I really thought I had it figured out but was proven completely wrong.

The book follows Jax and Avery. Jax was attacked by the Black Dahlia killer and when he returns home, he has an ex-FBI agent as a bodyguard, guarding him and Avery.

This book keeps you guessing who the Killer is and has twists just to make sure you stay on your toes. Knowing what I now know this book would be a fun re-read.

This book includes:

🖤Grumpy x Sunshine
🖤Bodyguard Romance
🖤Serial Killer Mystery
🖤Mid-size FMC
🖤Mental Health Rep
🖤Criminal Minds meets Perfect Strangers
🖤Dark Romantic Suspense with a side of comedy
🖤Deadly Secrets

Thank to Luna Literary and M. Black for the advance reader copy.

Surviving Lily by M. Black completely pulled me into its dark, twisty world and did not let go. This story walks a razor-thin line between psychological thriller and dark romance, and it does it so well.

Avery is such a complex, unreliable heroine, you’re never quite sure if you should be rooting for her or questioning everything she does. Watching her piece together her past while everything around her unravels kept me hooked the entire time. And Ellis? The tension between his need for answers and his growing connection to Lily was chef’s kiss 💋🤌 messy, emotional, and just the right amount of dangerous.

The pacing was tight, the reveals hit hard, and the overall vibe was dark without feeling overdone. If you love morally gray characters, trauma-driven stories, and romance wrapped in suspense, this one is absolutely worth the read.

Ooo now this was a bit different!

Its a spicy psychological thriller that keeps you guessing! Who is it!?

The twist at the end was clever and I didn't see it coming until just before it was clear in the story!

I loved Ellis! What a spicy sweet heart ❤️

What a book this was! It really has everything that I liked! If you like Criminal Minds, complicated characters with all their flaws and spice, I highly recommend this book!

I was hooked from the very first page. We follow the story of Avery who just wants to live a quiet life and then she crossed the path of Ellis, an ex-FBI agent who has the mission of protecting her best friend Jax who survived the Black Dalhia attack on his family and himself.

Avery’s sunshine personality and Ellis’ grumpy side go so well together. Their banter was everything and I really liked how their relationship evolved throughout the book.

I have so much to say about this book but I really don’t want to spoil it for you.

And of course there is spice in this book but it added so much to the plot and it was so well written.

The last chapters were really something for me. I didn’t see these twists coming at all. When the truth was revealed, all the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place and everything made sense. And omg I was so shocked by the end!

Oh my! What a twisted psychological thriller. This book has it all, including a little twist that is sure to throw readers for a loop.

Avery and Jax are best friends. Have been since college. Thick as thieves these two are and no one can come between them. When Jax survives a attack by the Black Dahlia Killer he returns home to New Orleans with a babysitter, bodyguard to protect him.

Brooks is an ex FBI agent in charge of babysitting a man child. Add in Jax's female best friend it is like double trouble. He has never met a women who is not afraid to put him in his place. And she does time and time again. But he doesn't trust her. She is definitely hiding something. And he will find out what it is.

As a killer or killers close in, Brooks may get more than he bargains for. As the secrets unravel and the spider lays it's trap, Brooks begins a race to protect those he holds close. He will have to make some tough decisions that could cost him everything.

Overall this book is a twisted thriller filled with chills. It has a lot of witty banter that is sure to entertain as well. It contains some violent and graphic scenes of torture, so proceed with caution. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dark romance. It has all those elements of surprise. The characters are well mapped out and interesting. And the twist will be one that is shocking and surprising all in one. I kinda guessed the killer about midway through with some of the easter eggs laid out. But my first guess was wrong.

I really loved this book and definitely want to read more...

ARC reader:

This is my first time reading a book from Morgana Black but it for sure won’t be the last 🙌🏻

I will say MAJOR check for trigger warnings especially for talk of mental health disorders… I can’t say more so I don’t spoil anything.

This serial killer mystery with a perfect side of romance kept me on the edge of my seat. When I thought I knew what was going on I was like “ha yeah I know who it is and how it all happened” *POV me sitting back in my chair with my hands behind my head like I’m some big hotshot detective* and BOY was a pleasantly surprised when there was a twist I never saw coming. Was I still right… yes 🔍😏 but also wrong and I love that hahah 😂

I cannot wait for the next book I’m already intrigued!!

Wow… this one was insane 🤯

If you think you might get bored while reading a suspense novel, think again. Surviving Lily is gripping from the start and keeps you questioning everything as the story unfolds.

Just when you think you’ve figured it out… you’ll change your mind. And then change it again. And maybe again after that. 🤭 The twists keep coming, and the tension builds perfectly throughout the story.

But here’s the fun part — the clues are there. You just have to pay attention.

This book blends suspense, romance, and humor in a way that keeps the pages turning. I genuinely enjoyed the ride and trying to piece everything together along the way.

If you enjoy thrillers that keep you guessing until the very end, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I received this as an ARC and this is my opinion of it. OMG I loved it, never thought that I would like a suspense/romance book but this was outstanding. The ending was fantastic I am not going to give any spoilers but you need to read it for yourself. The twist at the end was clever and I didn't see it coming until just before it was clear in the story. Just when I th ought I had it figured out it changed. The chemistry between Avery and Ellis was spot on. I loved the banter, suspense and the romance.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Thank you to NetGalley and M. Black for gifting me a copy of her first contemporary suspenseful romance, Surviving Lily. It’s always hard to write reviews for mystery/thrillers because I want to be very careful not to spoil anything for other readers… but let’s give it a go.

We start with our FMC, Avery Jordan, who lives in New Orleans, which I thought was a fantastic setting for this story. I could really tell the author did her research on the city. I’ve been there several times, and I had such a clear picture in my mind as the scenes played out.

Avery is trying to live somewhat off the grid, but unfortunately, her best friend Jax is famous enough that attention is inevitable.

Things escalate even more when Jax and his family nearly become victims of a serial killer. He’s forced to have a team of FBI agents following him everywhere, led by former Special Agent Ellis Brooks. Enter our grumpy MMC in all his sexy glory. The night of Jax’s attack, Ellis’s partner was murdered by the killer, connecting the two men in a dark way and ultimately leading Ellis to leave the agency with Jax being his last assignment.

Immediately, Avery and Ellis butt heads. As his suspicions of her grow, she becomes increasingly paranoid about events from her own past coming to light.

I gave this one 5 stars. It was the perfect late-night read, the kind you don’t want to put down. I literally finished it in two days.

The author markets this as having Criminal Minds vibes, and I can absolutely see why...even down to the side character, Miles, who felt like our version of Penelope. I thought M. Black did an amazing job keeping the twists hidden until just the right moment.

I’ve read a lot of mystery/thrillers and a lot of romance, but this felt like my first true combination of the two. And I say that because this book is a ROMANCE first, with the mystery/thriller driving the plot. The relationship between Ellis and Avery was so well written, and I was rooting for them the entire time. And the spicy scenes were exactly what I’ve come to expect from M. Black. (If you haven’t yet, check out her romantasy series The Sorrow of Shadows under the name Morgana Black.)

All in all, I will definitely be recommending this one to my friends, and I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Loved this! Absolutely inhaled it

When I slipped into this dark & spicy psychological thriller about a bodyguard, I wasn’t expecting to be gasping at the end of the book. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong! I absolutely LOVED this romantic suspense & can’t wait to see what this indie author does next!

Told with multiple POVs & plenty of flashbacks, I was right there with the main characters as the multi-dimensional story of Ellis, a former FBI profiler, & his hunt for a serial “un-aliver” unfolded. M Black skillfully pulls together multiple backstories without causing confusion & distracting from the plot. Her careful crafting kept me completely engaged & on the edge of my seat throughout this fast-paced thriller.

I loved Ellis, the serious, all-business former FBI agent. His backstory & his departure from the FBI as the lead investigator led credence to his value as a bodyguard. And I adored his dirty mouth! The heat that came off him when he was around Avery, his yearning, restraint, & his commitment after claiming her, combined for some serious chef’s kiss moments between them. The chemistry was palpable & I ate it up.

Avery was a perfectly flawed FMC. The author thoughtfully portrayed her panic attacks, and I loved how Avery purposely tried to make the most of every moment. Her sunshine never felt trite & I liked her dedication to her best friend & her joy for life. It all made sense within the constraints of her character. I loved the way she teased & pushed Ellis’ buttons. It made for great banter & chemistry. And ultimately, some deliciously spicy moments.

I appreciated that the side characters are not second thoughts. While there aren’t many, the author flushed out each one & they serve a purpose. I especially loved Avery’s best friend, Jackson. He was the most likable rich kid, & his easy banter with Avery & big brother-ish moments with Ellis made him the person I could see Avery befriending.

This was the best kind of ride & I can’t wait to see what this immensely talented author does next. This is a five-star, 100% recommend for anyone who loves romantic suspense or thrillers. It’s a total slump-buster!

There was one minor plot hole in the wrap up, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment or distract from the conclusion.

A book that made feel all the emotions... That’s what I’ll like to call Surviving Lily...From the very first chapter, I knew this was going to be one of those books that completely takes over your brain, and I was right. I couldn’t put it down, couldn’t stop thinking about it, and honestly didn’t want it to end.
This story follows Avery, who just wants a normal life after everything she’s been through but of course, that’s not happening. The moment a serial killer resurfaces and a bodyguard gets thrown into her life, everything spirals. And not in a subtle way. Avery trying to rebuild her life, secrets lurking in every corner, and a serial killer case that keeps getting darker the deeper you go. There’s this constant feeling of unease, like something is always about to go wrong, and it kept me hooked the entire time. Ellis?? peak grumpy, emotionally closed-off, “I trust no one” energy and then there’s Avery, who constantly gets under his skin. The tension between them was SO good. The banter, the push and pull, the way neither of them could stop thinking about. the other?? yeah, I ate that up.... I’ve always loved murder mysteries with romantic subplot... And this book literally made me happy in that department...Serial killer aspect isn’t just background noise it drives the story. Every reveal added more tension, and I genuinely couldn’t predict where it was going at times.
If anything, the story leans into its chaos but instead of feeling messy, it makes everything more intense, more consuming.. What really worked for me is how this balances genres. It’s a full on serial killer mystery with real stakes, and the suspense actually keeps you guessing and that romance and tension between Ellis and Avery is chef’s kiss... Also Avery is not your typical fmc. She’s messy, guarded, and clearly hiding things, and I loved that about her. Watching Ellis slowly realize there’s more to her story?? that tension hit... That said, the plot can feel a bit chaotic at times because there’s a LOT going on like trauma, mystery, romance, secrets but honestly, it made the reading experience more intense .. The friendship between Jax and Avery is everything... I really wish I had a friend like him... .

Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy! Surviving Lily is an intriguing mystery with likable characters and a shocking twist.

It follows Avery, who is hovering over her best friend after he was nearly murdered by a serial killer. However, things become complicated when feelings arise between her and her friend's new bodyguard.

I thought Surviving Lily would be predictable, but I was definitely wrong. It took me a while to get into it at the beginning and felt like I didn't really connect with the characters until around 100 pages in. After that, however, I really enjoyed the characters and their dynamics.

Avery is very lively, but not in an annoying way. She's a little bit bubbly, but without the ditzy-ness that sometimes accompanies female characters. She has a difficult past and a lot of trauma, but it doesn't overshadow her character. She still very much owns her own life.

Ellis is also scarred and overcoming some recent trauma, but it just motivates him to care more about those around him. At first, his immediate attraction to Avery seems shallow and I thought he wasn't capable of anything more than that, but I was wrong about that, as well. He ends up being very likable and protective of those he cares about, which includes Avery earlier than I expected.

Jackson is a very fun, lovable best friend and you genuinely care about what happens to him. He often acts as the comedic relief and another reason why a relationship between Avery and Ellis would be complicated.

There are some aspects of the book that I saw coming, but others that really surprised me. I guessed about HALF of the end, but the other major twist completely floored me and really impressed me. It's well-written, though, and explained well, so it doesn't feel like it came out of nowhere. There are also some very subtle hints leading up to it that I found to be very well-executed.

Overall, the story is intriguing, the characters are likable, and the twists are very twisty! I enjoyed this book very much after a slightly slow start.

This book delivers a fast paced, immersive reading experience that keeps your mind turning from beginning to end. The author does an excellent job balancing momentum with attention to detail, carefully weaving together the who, what, where, and why behind the mystery. The result is a story that pulls you in quickly and keeps you fully engaged as the layers unfold.

One element I particularly loved was the playlist included at the beginning of the book. It perfectly matched the overall vibe of the story and added an extra layer of atmosphere. My only small wish is that the songs had been directly incorporated into specific moments throughout the narrative so readers would know exactly when to press play and experience each scene with the intended soundtrack.

The twists, turns, and unexpected bumps in the road kept my mind reeling in the best way. The mystery unfolds in a way that constantly makes you question what you think you know, which made the book incredibly difficult to put down.

While the characters are well established and their personalities are clearly defined, their journeys feel less like dramatic transformations and more like revelations of who they truly are beneath the surface. Rather than major character evolution, the story focuses on peeling back layers and allowing readers to discover their authentic selves alongside the plot.

The FMC was an absolute standout. Her sass, strength, and strong willed nature made her instantly lovable. She handles challenges with resilience and confidence, making her the kind of character you can’t help but root for.

And the MMC Ellis Brooks. . .holy moly. He is undeniably hot. The author mentions early on that the book is for anyone who wants to hear Derek Morgan call them baby girl, and while that comparison is definitely there, the character also gave me strong vibes of Seeley Booth from Bones. In my mind, he felt like a perfect blend of both: the presence and attitude of Booth, with the voice and mannerisms of Morgan.

Another highlight was the FMC’s best friend Jackson. It’s the kind of loyal, fiercely devoted friendship everyone hopes to have in their life. The love and support between them is beautifully clear, and I especially appreciated how that dynamic is firmly established early on when the possibility of something developing between the MMC and FMC becomes apparent.

If you enjoy contemporary stories that blend thriller, mystery, and possessive romance, and especially if you love a setting with rich atmosphere, this is definitely a book you’ll want to add to your reading list ASAP.

I’ll stop here to avoid any spoilers because if I keep going I will I’ll spoil it all, but I will say that I’m genuinely excited to continue the series. 📚✨

There’s something about a strong, mysterious opening that just hooks you instantly and this book absolutely had that. The atmosphere was tense, the premise felt layered and it gave that wait… what is actually going on here? energy that makes you want to keep flipping pages. I was in. Fully invested. Ready for chaos, revelations, all of it.

But the issue is… it takes so long to actually get there.

The pacing is where this really struggled for me. The story keeps teasing answers without properly delivering them and instead of building tension, it starts to feel like it’s dragging things out. There’s only so many times you can hint at something before it stops being intriguing and just becomes frustrating. I kept waiting for that moment where everything clicks into place but getting there felt way more stretched than it needed to be.

Character wise, I had mixed feelings. Avery is interesting in theory, there’s depth there definitely and you can tell there’s something beneath the surface but the constant slow unraveling of her thoughts and motivations made it hard to stay fully connected. It felt like I was being kept at a distance instead of being pulled in. Brooks added to the mystery but at times he felt more like pieces of the puzzle than an actual person which made some of their dynamics fall a bit flat. There’s tension but not always the emotional payoff to match it.

That said, I can’t deny the concept itself is strong. The tone, the initial setup, the sense of unease; it all works. This could’ve been a really gripping, standout read if the pacing had been tighter and the reveals a bit more satisfying. It’s one of those books where you see the potential the entire time which almost makes it more frustrating when it doesn’t fully land.

(Thank you to the author for the eARC in exchange for a review. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own)

Surviving Lily by M. Black feels like Criminal Minds wrapped in a romance—and it absolutely delivers. You get a psychopathic serial killer, a broody (former) FBI agent determined to protect an innocent, and a heroine whose dark past ties everything together in ways you don’t see coming.

Ellis Brooks is exactly the kind of MMC I love—guarded, distrustful, and still reeling from the loss of his partner to the infamous Black Dahlia killer. When he’s tasked with protecting Jackson “Jax” Montgomery in New Orleans, he expects danger… just not Avery. Jax’s best friend is mysterious in all the right (and wrong) ways—no traceable past beyond eight years, lingering trauma, and panic attacks she tries to hide. From the start, you know there’s more to her story.

The suspense in this book is so well done. It has that perfect cat-and-mouse tension that keeps you constantly questioning who to trust. The slow tightening of the killer’s presence creates this underlying anxiety that builds beautifully—and that twist near the end? I genuinely didn’t see it coming.

I also loved the balance between romance and action. Neither overshadows the other, and the relationship between Ellis and Avery develops naturally. Their grumpy-sunshine dynamic works so well, and the banter is sharp, quick, and completely in character.

Overall, this was a gripping, twisty romantic suspense that kept me hooked from start to finish.

Plot Twist Queen strikes again!

The plot twists in this book I did not see coming! This is a suspense thriller romance that had me gripping the book the entire time. The story follows a young lady (Lily) who has something happen to her family. She wasn't supposed to survive, but somehow she did. The trauma she experienced changed who she was as a person, after several years she had grown up, moved into a new city and tried to create a new life for herself. Her best friend, Jax, was part of a high profile family and was the victim of an attempted murd3r. FBI Agent, Brooks was the agent on his case, and lost his partner during the incident. Jax goes back to New Orleans with a new security detail which now is led by the former agent, Brooks. With Brooks, Jax and Avery now in each others lives while trying to keep Jax alive, things take so many crazy turns and things aren't exactly what they seem. Brooks now has concerns about Avery and her mysterious past.

This book has so much intrigue, twists, turns, drama and so much more! I was enthralled by this book and honestly the story was gripping but had a good pace. The characters are engaging and well written. You are vested into their stories and lives. If you loved Criminal Minds with Derek Morgan then you will love this book. I was fully invested from the minute I picked it up. The plot twists in this had me saying "WHAT JUST HAPPENED" a few times. The connection and banter between Avery and Brooks was my favorite part, but the sass of her BFF Jax was so good too. You get some spice in this book, but the story is really what grips you the entire time. This isn't the first book Morgana will make you question everything and honestly it was my first dark suspense thriller book in years. I highly recommend you to read this story. You won't regret it.

I’d like to thank the author for the advance readers copy of this book.

I want to start by saying that I really did enjoy the book overall. The spice was there, the supporting characters were lovable, the MMC and FMC follow the formula you’d expect from a book in the genre (that’s not a bad thing) to include the banter and slightly immature FMC but we can chalk that up to her trauma I’m sure.

I did figure it out before the big reveal. There were subtle clues but it didn’t take away from the book. The second twist on the other hand felt rushed. I don’t want to say unfinished because that’s how it’s supposed to feel but it wasn’t needed. I get that it was for shock value but when it came out I rolled my eyes and said “oh boy” to my kindle. It doesn’t ruin the book but it also doesn’t add anything to it. But maybe that’s just me.

Something that isn’t as big of a deal but I did vent to my MIL about was the food allergy that felt thrown in. Before I hop up on my soapbox I feel like I should mention EVERY reaction is different even one persons reactions can be different from the last. Typically they do get more severe the more you have and is usually not the anaphylaxis that kills you. It’s after when you get your EpiPen. I have to navigate multiple deadly food allergies and nutmeg isn’t an easy one at a coffee shop, a pastry place, and ESPECIALLY a tea shop. With that being said let me remind anyone who does have one or may know someone who does… allergens can be deadly if inhaled, always carry two epipens, make sure the injection site is outside of your thigh, elevate your legs if you can.

Overall it was good. It was the first book I’ve read by the author and there’s a chance I’d read more. Based on the epilogue there will be a second and I’d give it a chance

First! Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read this!!

I’m not usually a big psychological or thriller reader—it’s not the genre I normally gravitate toward—but I’m really glad I picked this one up because it ended up being a great read. It definitely opened my eyes to a genre I don’t explore very often, and while I’m still primarily a romance reader, this book showed me how engaging and addictive a well-written thriller can be.

The story pulled me in more than I expected. The tension, the pacing, and the way the mystery slowly unfolds kept me curious about what was going to happen next. Even though psychological thrillers aren’t typically my go-to, this one had enough intrigue and character depth to keep me invested the whole way through.

I especially enjoyed Avery and Ellis. Their dynamic was one of my favorite parts of the book. The way they constantly butt heads, challenge each other, and push one another made their interactions really fun to read. Their journey from clashing personalities to working their way toward the end of the story together was engaging and added a lot of personality to the plot.

And that twist? I definitely didn’t see it coming. It completely shifted the way I looked at the story and made the ending even more satisfying. Moments like that are what make thrillers so exciting, and this one delivered.

Overall, even though psychological thrillers aren’t usually my thing, this was a really enjoyable read that kept me hooked. If you enjoy strong character dynamics, a tense storyline, and a twist that makes you rethink everything, this is definitely a must-read.

Surviving Lily opens with a strong, mysterious hook that instantly pulls you in. The atmosphere is tense, layered, and full of the “wait, what is actually happening?” energy that makes you want to keep turning pages. I was fully invested from the start, ready for chaos, revelations, and all the twists the story promised.

The book blends dark romance with a thriller subplot. Avery, the female lead, carries heavy trauma, and watching her fall for Ellis, a devoted and caring presence, was satisfying. Their romance builds slowly with palpable tension and chemistry, and the spice hits hard.

The thriller element adds suspense, but I predicted the perpetrator early on thanks to foreshadowing. However, the story delivers a twist I did not see coming, which casts previous events in a new light. While interesting, Avery’s response to this twist felt unrealistic, and it slightly clouded my experience.

Pacing is the book’s main challenge. The story teases revelations repeatedly without delivering them efficiently, which made some sections feel stretched rather than suspenseful. Avery’s internal reflections are layered but at times slow, creating a distance from her that made it hard to stay fully engaged. Brooks contributes to the mystery, but occasionally feels more like a plot device than a fully realised character, which undercuts some of the tension.
Despite these issues, the concept is strong. The tone, initial setup, and sense of unease work well. With tighter pacing and more satisfying reveals, this could have been a standout thriller romance. As it stands, it’s an enjoyable read, but it didn’t fully capture me enough to continue with a sequel.

First, I’d like to thank Morgana and Luna Literary for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest and spoiler free review of Survivng Lily!

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My Thoughts:
This is a brand new author to me and let me just say that Morgana (love this name by the way!) is an amazing author! Survivng Lily was such a unique story that I didn’t know that I needed it in my life.

It wasn’t just a bodyguard x protected type of story..it was also an incredible mystery thriller type of story. These characters had so much depth to them that I was completely obsessed with learning about them and seeing them grow during the story. The thriller vibes follows a serial unaliver called the Black Dahlia. The name alone brought so many curious thoughts as you honestly couldn’t trust any one whole reading this story. Ellis is the bodyguard and he is really good at his job. He is able to read people pretty well until he meets Avery. Avery is always working hard for herself and enjoys making things in order to help others. When she meets Ellis he definitely ruffles her feathers but she doesn’t back down from him even if her feelings do get hurt.

Avery and Jax have such an amazing friendship and I loved seeing how they both were each others twin flame. At least that’s what it felt like to me. Their friendship was beautiful to read about and I also really liked Avery and Ellis. Their banter was incredible and they were the typical grumpy sunshine trope which is one I loved. Seeing Avery make Ellis curious about her truly had me smiling like a fool. This is all I will say for now but I can’t wait for others to read this book!

I am so grateful to have been given an advanced copy! Thank you so much for the opportunity to read early. The premise had me very intrigued and there were so many of my favorite tropes.

Grumpy/Sunshine
Bodyguard Romance
YEARNING and slow burn
Top notch banter

This book was a wild ride! I actually can't say a lot of the things I would love to talk about because you aren't getting spoilers from me! There were so many twists and the author did a wonderful job at making you question every character. I was suspicious of every single one of them at some point. I really enjoyed coming up with theories and chasing them through the story.

Avery was a blast as an FMC. She has her issues but won't let anyone push her around. Brooks is a perfect MMC. Almost too perfect but I adored him and Avery together. Their banter was top notch and had me giggling, in spite of the literal serial killer plotting their demise. Amazing yearning from both sides and a wonderfully built slow burn that can't be stopped. The way trauma is handled between them is fantastic, how they balance and support each other through so many events, and learn to heal while accepting the good and bad parts. Their chemistry is intense and so fun to read.

Outside of the relationship you have the thriller serial killer mystery happening. Overall I was enthralled by it and couldn't wait for the next answer. The pacing at the very end felt a bit too fast for me. There are some unresolved questions and some interactions I wish we would have seen. But with book 2 coming I will absolutely be continuing this series. I can't wait to see what happens next!

A Dark, Twisty Romance with a Shocking Secret
Avery, our FMC, is a woman with a tragic past that she wants to outrun. When her best friend, Jackson, becomes the target of the Black Dahlia killer the FBI assigns Ellis to protect him. Ellis is an ex agent with a sharp tongue and an instinct for danger. Ellis is cold and suspicious of everything. So also of Avery's devotion to Jackson. He suspects that she is hiding something. While the story develops Ellis finds himself drawn to Avery. However when her past collides with the present, the truth comes out and makes him choose between the woman who stole his heart and his duty.
Ellis a a classic hero. He is a damaged protector. Hardened by betrayal, guilt and loss. He is loyal and had a lot of dry humor. However when the story evolves so does he. He goes from distrust to devotion. The way this is done is compelling.
Avery herself is quick witted and is hiding a trauma. The trauma is so deep it reshapes the story. I very much enjoyed the banter with Ellis. The way she loves Jackson is adorable.
The slow burn between these two is masterfully drawn out. They circle each other in a dance of suspicion and attraction. Their first kiss is hot, but it is the quiet moments that are key here.
I would have loved some more development for the Black Dahlia killer. I feel we did not get enough of him.
This book was one that kept me on the edge of my seat. The way the plot twist is written into the story is everything. It blew my mind.

If you’re a bookish babe who also loves all things true crime, run, don't walk to check Surviving Lily out! This was written for all the Criminal Minds ‘Baby Girls’ (iykyk), and it definitely scratched the itch I’ve had for another good crime romance read.

What I liked:

🔥That slow burn! Listen, I’m usually pretty impatient and am probably part of the 1% of the bookish community that gets annoyed AF with slow burns (I know, I know, don’t come at me). But when Avery and Ellis FINALLY acted on their feelings, whoooo boy were you rewarded. Ellis’ dirty talk alone was worth it!

🎬 The clear yet cinematic writing style. It definitely read as though inspired by true crime tv, but that is what I loved about it! No overly floral language, or points drowned in metaphor. For this particular subject, M. Black gave me exactly what I needed: a book that played like a movie in my head, spice that stands up to today’s standards within the genre, nuanced characters, and plot twists that leave you yearning for the next book.

💕Great balance between crime/mystery plot and romance development. There were plenty of clues to keep sleuths occupied, and the tension and chemistry between Avery and Ellis sparked off the page! Upon finishing the book, I didn’t feel cheated with either topic, which I feel is pretty rare for me. I’m a huge true crime fan so I get pretty picky. I can count the number of true crime/romance books that I’ve fully enjoyed on one hand, and I’m happy to say that Surviving Lily will be one of them.

🌶🌶🌶
This book pulled me in right from the start. I was completely hooked. Written mostly in third person, the level of detail made every scene feel vivid and easy to imagine, which kept me fully immersed the entire time.
The banter between the characters was top tier. It added so much energy to the story and had me laughing out loud more than once.
Avery, our FMC, is sarcastic, strong, and incredibly resilient. Despite the trauma she’s faced, she continues to push forward, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way. She’s such a badass.
Ellis, our MMC… I’m SWOONING. He has that classic grumpy edge, shaped by his own past, but underneath it all he’s such a sweetheart. I couldn’t help but root for him too.
Watching their relationship unfold was both fun and heartwarming. It felt natural, engaging, and full of moments that made me smile.
The side characters deserve a mention as well. I loved every single one of them and really enjoyed seeing their dynamics and interactions throughout the story. There is the perfect amount of spice in the story as well but it doesnt overpower the plot.
The mystery element was so well done. It kept me guessing the entire time, constantly questioning what was going to happen next. And those twists? They were completely unexpected and I did not see that coming.
The ending delivered a strong finish, and I’m already counting down the days until book two.
Thank you so much, Morgana, for this incredible story. it was such an enjoyable read!! 💕💕

Surviving Lily follows a ex-FBI, now bodyguard who is assigned to the main FMC’s best friend who narrowly avoided a serial unaliver. Avery (aka Lily) is best friend with Jax and meets his grumpy bodyguard, Ellis, who she instantly butts heads with. Ellis, MMC, is a broody, tough shell to crack because of many things in his past that have left him feeling like he can’t help the people around him and he doesn’t trust easily. Ellis tries to find out anything he can about Avery, but is finding her past to be nonexistent. Through his continuous efforts he says he’s just doing it for security reasons, but he finds himself being continuously drawn to her….

This book was written in 3rd POV which I do find very hard for follow personally. However, it was written well in this POV. I did enjoy this book quite a lot, but kind of got lost near the end at one of the plot twists. I did find that one of the twists was predictable but the other was totally unexpected. I personally think there is a part in this book that feels unneeded, but I do understand why it was added in. The tension between the two MCs was so strong and I enjoyed the slow burn. I also think that Ellis dirty talk was *chefs kiss*. I would read the second book in this series which I believe is hinted towards in the epilogue??

I did receive this as an ARC from the author and Luna Literary in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much for letting me read this!

Tropes:

- Enemies to Lovers
- Forced Proximity
- Forbidden Love
- Bodyguard MMC

I. Cannot. Even. 😭🤯
Surviving Lily had me hooked from page one. If you think suspense might be slow or predictable… think again. Every time I thought I had it figured out, BAM 💥, I was wrong. And then wrong again. And then… you get it. The twists keep coming, the tension keeps building, and I couldn’t stop turning the pages.
Avery Jordan is living her life mostly off the radar in New Orleans, but of course, drama finds her anyway. Enter Ellis Brooks, grumpy, protective, and my ultimate FBI crush. Their chemistry? 🔥 Grumpy vs. cautious, opposites that fight, snark, and slowly melt into each other. I lived for every interaction.
The mystery/thriller side of this book is just as amazing as the romance. Criminal Minds vibes? Absolutely. You get clues, red herrings, and that perfect balance of suspense that makes you want to keep reading at 2 a.m. (not that I did that or anything 😅).
Spicy scenes ✅, emotional stakes ✅, romance that’s slow-burn but also impossible to resist ✅. And the side characters? Loved them all. Miles is basically the perfect sidekick, bringing levity and smarts when things get intense.
This is the kind of thriller-romance mashup I didn’t know I needed but now can’t live without. I’m officially obsessed and already ready for the next book.
Tropes:

This Prologue Had Me 😳

Ok Besties… you KNOW I have thoughts on "Surviving Lily" 😏

Let’s start with that Prologue... because WOW. It hooked me immediately and gave full-on 'Criminal Minds' vibes (yes please 👀). I was locked in, ready for chaos, k!llers, and late-night “just one more chapter” energy.

Buuut… let's address the elephant in the room, shall we? This is written mostly in 3rd person POV, and I struggled with that... NGL. 🫣 I kept craving that deep, immersive 1st person multi-POV moment, especially with a story this dark and psychological. HOWEVER… there were a few 1st person chapters from the killer that brought Absolute chills. And weighted the suspense. But when the next chapter went back to 3rd person, it just lessened the suspense, IMO.

Avery and Ellis had all the ingredients... grumpy x sunshine, bodyguard tension, forced proximity... but I personally didn’t feel that chemistry the way I wanted. It might’ve been the POV distance, because the setup was there.

That said… the plot? Intriguing. The suspense? Solid. The serial k!ller mystery? Had me invested. And the New Orleans setting? Loved it... felt atmospheric and real.

Overall, this was an interesting read with a killer concept (pun intended 🤭). If dark suspense with 'Criminal Minds' energy is your thing, go ahead and add this to your TBR.👍🏼
