Thaddeus Malloy only wanted to be a doctor, and he was well on his way until he killed his stepfather, who had beaten him and his mother for the last time. This lead to Thad leaving town and going on an adventure that takes him to a powerful and wise old Indian that teaches him many things including how to heal and kill. From there Brody goes to a small settlement and with the blessing of the mayor he takes over the doctor's office after the doctor left town to tend to a sick family matter.
After leaving the town with a group of Cowboys, where he learns everything he needs to learn about cattle as he slowly becomes a good cowboy. His reasoning for going with the cattle drive is to help the boss out who's top Cowboy was hurt and Thad saved him. This way he can tend to the injured Cowboy, learn a trade and get back to Kansas to dish out frontier justice for the men mistreating his mother and stealing her business. If he survives he will go to school to become the doctor he wants to be.
Thaddeus Malloy has been working for the town doctor and wants to go to medical school. He is very intelligent and a good boy. After the death of hie father his mother marries another man. This soon turns into disaster as the new husband beats his wife and Thaddeus. One day Thaddeus has had enough after he found his mother on the floor barely alive. He fonds his stepfather in their bar and accidentally shoots and kills him when he was tripped. He then gathers what few things he has and steals a boat to escape. This starts a new adventure for the boy who now calls himself Brody Conner. Brody learns survival skills from man old Indian man and also some native medicine. This is just the start of his adventure with more action and suspense to come but I won't spoil that. I really enjoyed his adventures.
NEVER AGAIN, Monty Garner, 12/05/2025 Possibly a 12-year-old boy wrote this book after reading too many shoot'em up dime novels. The premise is that a young boy wants to be a doctor, so after hanging out with the local doctor, he aspires to go to medical school. Before he leaves town, he murders his mother's husband, who regularly beat her unconscious. As he travels, he leaves dead bad men right and left, always "in self defense." Descriptions of the killings are gory and the product of an immature imagination. Nothing about this book makes sense. Certainly not the "nice girl" he meets who acts like a tramp, aggressively making sexual moves on Brody, having met him the same day... yet calling the saloon girl "a hussy." The grammar, punctuation, and shift in tense made me crazy! Obviously, there was no proofreading or editing. Spare me!
I like the old west, horses, cowboys and Indians, Poker games gunfights outlaws good guys bad guys, all of them. I did not like the childish attempt to reconcile 1850's morality with contemporary goody two shoes idealism. I do not believe there is a need to apologize nor make up silly rationalizations for our history. Nonetheless the germ of a good story resides within the book. If Garner had allowed the actions of he characters to speak for themselves it would have been a better story. However the author insisted on sharing the why and how they felt about everything.
I thoroughly enjoy your books. This one was excellent. I really appreciate your having your main characters with "great wisdom and insights". They always think before action. It really makes the book worthwhile reading because you appreciate someone with a "brain"!!! Please continue with this series as long as you continue to give us brilliant writings.
This was a fun story to read. They characters predictable, but I expect it and sometimes, it's just what I want. The verbs went from future (example -'will go') to the expected verbs in storytelling. There was no rhyme or reason to the shift. Amusing. Proofreaders, where were you?
The author has written a great story of a young man’s journey as he is bent on making sure his mother remains safe and becoming a doctor by enrolling in medical school. A very interesting story of fighting for the protection of others who have been wronged.
As much as I was looking forward to reading this book. I was appalled that there was theft with no conscience. To steal even if for a good reason is wrong!!!!!! This is what,is going on in our schools now days. Kids take things just because they want them without thinking they already belong to someone. Shame,
This book kept me and my mind flowing the more I read the more I wanted ,it did not disappoint me I Will wait for the next chapter of Dr Brody Conner keep it up see you next time .
The best westerns need a believable hero, one worth rooting for. While some descriptors of Brody are a bit over the top, this is a true “white hat” who demonstrates self-reliance and standing for what you believe in.
I really enjoyed this book, great storyline! Loved all the different things he did such as riding drag! I've tailed as many as thirty in my younger days and that was definitely enough for me!
First time reader. Good story, likable character in Brody Connor. I was happy that Brody finished his medical schooling and received his medical degree. I will definitely be reading book two.
This was a very well authored book it was exciting, suspenseful, and full of action. I would highly recommend this book to western book lovers. I. Can’t wait until book three is released.
