Wayward Sons #1.5

Against the Wind

Rate this book
The last person I expect—or want—to take shelter with as a hurricane bears down on Hatterwick Island is Daniel LaRue—the man who broke my heart barely three months ago.

I’m not looking for distractions.

The clinic’s been targeted by thieves.

The island’s locked down tight against the storm.

And Daniel—hot Coast Guardsman, bad decision, walking heartbreak—is the last thing I need complicating my life again.

Coming back to the Outer Banks after med school was supposed to be a fresh start.
For a while, I thought maybe I’d bring him with me.

Until he accepted a promotion across the country without even telling me.

It turned out he was more of a situationship than anything real.

Except now he’s standing on my doorstep, insisting he’s here for me—and refusing to leave when everything in me screams to slam the door in his face.

Stranded together, we have no choice but to face the storm—and the feelings I thought I'd buried.

But as the hours tick by, it’s clear Daniel isn’t telling me everything.

And on Hatterwick Island, secrets always come with a price.

Drug runners, the wrath of Mother Nature, and the fury of a woman scorned. Daniel’s got his work cut out for himself proving to everyone that Hatterwick is where he’s supposed to be. Gabi always knew she was coming back to Hatterwick. Until three months ago, she’d thought Daniel would be coming with her. Now, hurricane force winds have blown him to her doorstep and she doesn’t know if she should give him a second chance or if that would just make her a fool, again. I'm a sucker for a second chance. Pair it with an incredible grovel and irresistible chemistry and I'm going to be head over heels. I loved seeing these two get it right finally and I'm so glad I don’t have long to wait for the next book. I need more Wayward Sons and I need it now!

Gabi had to pick herself up and nurse her broken heart these past months after Daniel chose his career over her, over them. Now he's back on the island telling her he's there for her?! Nope. But when a hurricane hits and he's stuck in her clinic with her riding out the storm, her heart and her body are telling her to give him the second chance he seems so intent on. Should she chance another broken heart? Is Daniel really here for her, or is it his career that's still his priority?

Daniel knew almost immediately that he made the wrong choice when he said yes to a promotion without even talking to Gabi about it. It's taken awhile, but he's finally back on the island, and he's going to get her to forgive him and give him a second chance, no matter how long it takes. He might have to take a slight detour to get there, though, when someone related to his case tries to break into Gabi's clinic. If they make it out of this storm, and take down the targets of his task force, he will convince Gabi that she's his priority.

This short novella is fast-paced and takes you right to the heart of Gabi and Daniel's second chance. I wanted to know more about them, about their past, and their present, but I still enjoyed reading how their close proximity forced them to reopen their hearts to each other, and Gabi to give Daniel his second chance. There's a bit of suspense, their chemistry is hot, and it's obvious they're heading for a happy forever.

Swoony love, healing and intrigue

I loved this second chance romance with a side of hurricane disaster and mild suspense. The storyline was imaginative, characters relatable and likable, and the writing captivating. It had the perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, and spice. Gabi is a physician who returned to her hometown, Hatterwick Island, after her residency. Unfortunately, her boss is on vacation when a hurricane is going to make landfall and she is the only doctor on the island. Daniel is a Coast Guardman and a drug intradiction investigator who recently transferred to the Nags Head. After screwing up his relationship with Gabi and breaking her heart three months ago, he transferred hoping to get her back. While he’s working on a plan, a hurricane heads for the coast and he is tasked with helping. To find their way back on the journey toward their HEA, they’ll need to unpack some baggage, while riding out a hurricane and dealing with criminals. The story had a good balance of both the mild suspense and romance, each equally important to the flow of the story. I am excited to read the rest of love stories of the Wayward Sons. 4.5 stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. My only complaint was there wasn’t enough of it!!!! 😈

ATW gave us an insight into Gabi’s time off island when she left to attend college. When we catch up with her it’s a few years later and she’s home to work at the local island clinic which was always her plan.
While she was away she met a guy who was a coastguard and for the time they were together she thought this was the real deal with a future, until the day he dropped a bomb and put his career before them! Gabi’s heart is busted and she feels they were more a situationship than a relationship.

Daniel knew he’d messed up pretty much right away - well yeah, the lack of discussion or communication on taking a new post with the gal you’ve been getting serious with was his first misstep…. but he sets about trying to fix things.

He’s the last person Gabi expects to see arrive to help the town get organized before a hurricane hits the island. To say she’s not best pleased would be an understatement.

You would think that Daniel would have leaned from his first mess up with Gabi that communication was key… hey, no!!
He’s there partly to assist hurricane prep but there’s a bigger reason and he doesn’t tell her. Will this pair ever manage to work things out? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ I did enjoy the intrigue that story line brought to the book.

I liked that this novella filled a question I had from Sawyer & Willa’s book. We had seen Gabi and Daniel in that and I was curious about both her being back home and who he was.

HJ gave us a great epilogue extra for this pair that made me way happy as their book kinda finished in a happy for now note.

I’m looking forward to catching up with the couple and the other characters we’ve met so far as the series continues.

As a hurricane approaches, we are back in Hatterwick, a small town in the Outer Banks where Dr. Gabi Carrera, is back in her hometown. She now owns the clinic and is the only physician in the area.
As she prepares for the upcoming hurricane, a different kind of hurricane arrives at her clinic. None other than Daniel LaRue. The man that left her behind for a job in Seattle without any input from her.
When Daniel, a Coast Guardsman, realized the mistake he made by leaving the woman he loved, he decided to make amends. Taking a demotion to grovel to the woman he terribly hurt, is a start. In the midst of it all, he’s also been assigned to help find out who is trafficking drugs in the area, and stop them.
Between the hurricane, and the traffickers , the suspense keeps us guessing making the plot engaging.
Though not truly a cliffhanger, the readers are left with some unanswered questions and new discoveries.
Looking to finding out more on the next book.

Against the Wind is a Novella that follows alongside book one in the Wayward Sons series. It's Gabi and Daniel's story. Gabi met and fell fast for him while she was in New Orleans. Their situationship took a turn when Daniel impulsively took a job transfer to Seattle without talking about it with her. Gabi headed back home to Hatterwick to lick her wounds, work at the clinic, and be with her family. Which was a nice distraction until Hurricane Hannah came along and brought Daniel with her. He is determined to win her back and prove to her that she can trust him.

I am a fan of this series and I enjoyed this little story. It had a lot of good things wrapped up in a little Novella.
Suspense, spice, emotion, small town, and close-knit family/friends vibes. Hatterwick is one of those places where pretty much everyone knows everyone. So everyone takes care of each other. I think the little teensy cliffhanger at the end was a nice touch. What a way to set us up for the next book. I can't wait for Ford and Brees' book.

Gabi only left the island to go to University but her plan was always to return. Now working at the clinic she has to batten down the hatches when a hurricane is predicted.

Daniel was serving in the Coastguard when he and Gabi were together but his career was taking him away from her and he chose to leave her! He quickly realised just what he had given up and wants to get Gabi back in his life. Helping to organise for the impending Hurricane will make them spend time together. He also hopes it will get Gabi's attitude to thaw a little!

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel - you continue to put your huge foot in your even bigger mouth! Communication is the key to success, you dolt! I mean he finally gets a clue but good grief, I was tearing my hair out with him. This is a shorter length novella so you don't get the depth of story as you would get in a full length book but I thought it was well formed and well paced.

I'm delighted that we finally resolved the will-they-won't-they between these two but now to wait for the next book!

4.5 Stars 🌟 - a wonderful romantic suspense series

Against the Wind is a Novella in the Wayward Sons series. There are two books released already, a prequel and book one, with book two due for release in April. I would highly recommend reading the books in order to get the background and full impact of the intertwined storylines. This is a wonderful series of romantic suspense and I am eagerly awaiting book two!

This book focuses on Hatterwick Island resident Gabi and Coast Guardman Daniel. They have history, but the current story is focused on the imminent arrival of Hurricane Hannah. They are focused ensuring readiness to survive the coming storm, as well as the their turbulent emotions and the potential drug running activities in the area.

For a novella, this book is jam packed with action, mystery and romance. There is plenty of excitement, as well as old mysteries resurfacing and a subtle cliffhanger which leaves us anticipating the next instalment.

Give this series a try, you will not be disappointed!

Dr Gabi Carrera has returned to Hatterwick Island after having her heart broken in New Orleans. Now she is helping out a the local medical center but when the head doctor leaves for a vacation and there is an incoming hurricane, she knows she can no longer focus on her broken heart.

Daniel LaRue made a very bad decision 3 months ago and now he has arrived in Hatterwick Island for both his job and to make it right with the woman who’s heart he broke.

This was a novella and a quick read and the first I have read from this author. I think this book made it easy to like the main characters and definitely get involved in the mystery that occurred at the end of the book and also the underlying drug trafficking issue that brought Daniel to town.

Both of these characters were likeable and obviously career driven but ultimately Daniel chose what was most important to him in the end.

I really want to see what happens next and will be going back to see what I missed!

A wonderful story. Gabrielle had done her residency and met Daniel, who was in the Coast Guard. But he then took a job in Seattle without consulting Gabi and caused her great heartbreak. She is back home on Hatterwick Island and trying to keep the medical clinic going while her partner is on vacation. But there is also a hurricane on the way. Then Daniel shows up to help the area prepare for the hurricane. Daniel apologizes but can Gabi trust him. Someone tries to break into the clinic where Gabi works and Daniel is not going to let her be there alone. There are other things that are going on in the background. Can these two find the happiness they were looking for several month ago? Or will the events the town is facing cause more problems for them? But I loved the story of Gabi and Daniel and hope to see more of them in future episodes of the story. This ends with no cliffhangers of the story but you know there are more stories coming.

I love this type of book. Romantic Suspense just gives you a little more to bite into than some romances. This is a short, quick read, but that doesn't mean it's not as good as the author's other books. I always get caught up in them.

This is a story that centers around a small island getting prepared to be hit by a hurricane. Gabi is currently the only doctor at the clinic. Suddenly her ex shows up. He's with the Coast Guard and has been sent to help with the hurricane preparation. It's not a coincidence. He's really back to try to rectify his mistake of walking out on Gabi.

This story also has criminals and smugglers. Intrigue and romance... I loved it and can't wait for the next heart stopping addition to the series!

Thanks to Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the copy. All thoughts are my own.

Against the Wind by Harper Jackson, a novella within the Wayward Sons series, is a second chance romantic suspense, centering around a small island and its residents as they prepare to be hit by a hurricane. Gabi, currently the only doctor at the clinic, is working crazy hours seeing patients and getting ready for an intense hurricane heading toward Hatterwick. Daniel is with the Coast Guard and it's not a coincidence he is there to help with the hurricane preparation. Daniel realized he made a mistake of epic proportions and is trying to get back in Gabi’s life. Gabi does not know of the sacrifices and changes Daniel made to his life in order to be closer to her and correct his mistake of leaving Gabi without talking first. She was not expecting to end up being stranded with her ex during the storm. Being stuck together forces these two to open up to each other and confront their feelings. Only Daniel is not on the island just to get back in Gabi’s good graces he is also there investigating drug runners

Between the hurricane, and the drug traffickers, the suspense keeps us guessing making the plot engaging. Though not truly a cliffhanger, we are left with some unanswered questions and new discoveries. Now to patiently wait for the next installment of the Wayward Sons

Against The Wind is book 1.5 in the Wayward Sons series and it’s set in the small town of Hatterwick, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. If you love small town romance look no further than Daniel LaRue and Dr Gabi Carrera’s entertaining story.
Gabi is the only doctor in Hatterwick and as a hurricane approaches she is busy getting ready for the storm what she didn’t expect was for Daniel to walk into her clinic…..
Coast Guardsman Danielle walked away from Gabi but now he is determined to make amends and prove his love for her. But will she give him a second chance and what happens drug traffickers put them both in danger. One click to find out.
This is a book that will captivate and keep you on the edge of your seat. There are twists and turns you don’t see coming and it’s a well written, believable story with great characters. I’m living my visits to the Outer Banks, NC.

Gabi and Daniel

Against the Wind is a suspenseful novella that gives Daniel LaRue, a Coast Guard lieutenant, a second chance to fix his monumental screw up with Gabi Carrera, the love of his life. I loved the juxtaposition of the storm inside Gabi and the storm raging outside Hatterwick, Outerbanks, NC. As a hurricane barrels down on the small island town Daniel is there to help the town prepare while looking for signs drug traffickers. He’s requested this post to hopefully win Gabi back.

Harper Jackson knows romantic suspense. This is an unputdownable book and although a standalone, I suggest reading the series in order. Ms. Jackson does a great job of keeping the reader informed on past events, however, there is one mystery story arc threaded through these books that reading them in order helps to understand more completely. I loved this story and wish it wasn’t so short because I would like more of Gabi and Daniel. And once you get a taste of this series, you’ll want to devour it from the beginning. I can’t wait for the next book!

I read the prequel, then books 1 and 2, not realizing this was after the prequel, so things that will resolved in later books were not solved yet in this one.

This ended at the 93% mark on my e-reader, rest is teaser for next story. This is a story about second chances. They don't come together until about 1/2 through the book, so romance is slow to begin.

Some drama, suspense, villains and some crude words used. Not all is solved in this story about the drugs, but no cliffhanger for our MC's.

Also, a story how a town comes together in a Hurricane. Lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level barely 3 out of 5. No cheating, HEA, some romance and a tad of steam. I'd suggest reading the series in order.

I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase this novella. (ljh)

5 Star Review Against The Wind
(Wayward Sons #1.5) by Harper Jackson

I love stories set in small towns, such as Hatterwick, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This was a well written, entertaining story that drew me in and had me invested from the first chapter.

I enjoy romantic stories with an element of suspense and Against The Wind had a good balance of romance and suspense.

Although a novella, Ms. Jackson packed a lot into the story. The characters were easy to relate to and engaging.

There were numerous twists and turns and I found myself riveted to Daniel and Gabi’s story.

There were moments where I was on the edge of my seat whilst reading.

Now to patiently wait for the next installment of the Wayward Sons…

This was a quick novella and it gives us an insight to Gabi and Daniel’s story. We’re introduced to them in Won’t Back Down and I’m so happy we got to get their story. Gabi returned to Hatterwick with a broken heart and while trying to heal from it, she starts working at the clinic. A hurricane is on its way to Hatterwick and while Gabi is getting the clinic ready Daniel shows up with one of the firefighters to help board up the windows of the clinic. The lights go out and they’re reminded of the hurricane of the night they met. Although they still have things to talk about and work through, Gabi gives him a second chance. Definitely an enjoyable read and I can’t wait for more in this series.

We're back on Hatterwick island with the crew for Against the Wind. I have truly loved this series and all of the characters so far and this novella did not disappoint either. I enjoyed the backstory about Daniel and Gabi and what happened with their relationship. We had little snippets of her previously so it was great to get more of her. As they prep for a massive hurricane, things get a bit crazy on the island. The romantic suspense in this book was great and I loved the grovel and big romantic gesture from Daniel. His need to protect her was perfect and I loved how he jumped in to help her friends too. I am looking forward to more of this series.

Thank you to Harper Jackson for the ARC.

Gabi thought that what she shares with Daniel had a future until he didn’t give a second thought to leaving her to pursue his career. She is focused on her career and preparing for an upcoming storm when the man she never expected to see again shows up to help.

The biggest regret of Daniel’s life was leaving Gabi, and he is determined to make amended. He has come to her hometown to be there for her as the storm moves closer, but they will soon realize it isn’t only the storm they need to fear.

This story gives Gabi and Dani a chance to undo the mistakes of the past and realize how strong what they feel for each other truly is. The chemistry and connection between them were never in doubt but it is tested by the dangerous situation they find themselves in.

I had already read Hoyt/Caroline, Sawyer/Willa, and Ford/Bree's books so Gabi and Daniel's was a bit out of sequence. That being said, it made this book no less enjoyable.

Gabi was so angry that I could not imagine what Daniel was going to do to break down that wall. I love a good forced proximity book but I had to wonder if that was going to be enough. Daniel proved he was up to the challenge.

This was a very descriptive read making me feel like I was right there in the hurricane. There was some action thrown in along with a nice amount of suspense. The book already provided an HEA, but the author also provide us with an epilogue and a bonus.
Now I need to go back and re-read Sawyer and Willa's story. I vaguely remember Gabi being mentioned in it.

Gabi &Daniels story

The situationship that Gabi &Daniel had in New Orleans was shattered by Daniel’s careless decision. Now he and Gabi are reconnecting during a hurricane and some dangerous situations. I like that Daniel realized that his actions caused Gabi so much pain and that he’s more than willing to admit it. He’s also willing to work at rebuilding the relationship and Gabi, although hurt and angry, isn’t too stubborn to work through to a possible HEA with him. Throw in a hurricane, dead body and drug smuggling and you get a good read and an interesting side view of Willa and Sawyers story.

Gabi is strong, independent and ready to take charge as the only doctor on the island, but the last thing she expects is to see the man who left her behind, standing right in front of her. These two have history and they also have a present, one that is full of some strong emotions and a connection that is undeniable. Second chance

Gabi and Daniel had a quick romance in New Orleans. She thought they were headed for a more permanent relationship. Then Daniel took a promotion with the Coast Guard without talking to her and he left for Seattle. Now she's back home as a doctor on Hatterwick Island. Daniel has figured out that he made a big mistake and is transferring to be closer to Gabby and hopefully get together again. There's a lot of excitement with the hurricane, drug running, and finding a skeleton. This book seems to be at the same time as the previous book in this series but you don't have to read it in order to enjoy this book. I'm looking forward to the next book.

excellent

Against the Wind is a shorter story featuring Gabi Carrera and Daniel LaRue. It is a standalone with no cliffhangers. It does refer to other incidents in the other stories in the series but Harper Jackson does a great job of explaining them enough where you don’t have to read the other books but if you do, you’ll enjoy it as much more.

Gabi returns to the island she grew up on and in the middle of a hurricane, Daniel’s investigation and their past collide. It’s a fast paced novel and I’m glad to read about Gabi. It kept me interested where I read the entire book in one sitting. You will love it.

I loved this book, in fact since discovering Harper Jackson I have been eagerly awaiting every single instalment. This is a romantic suspense novel with all the boxes ticked, great characters and an exciting plot line. This book could be read as a standalone, however I love catching up with all the other characters from Hatterwick Island and each novel feels like meeting old friends. I cannot wait for the next book in the series and if you have not yet discovered his author I strongly recommend catching up with the rest of the series, you will not be disappointed.

Military, Second Chance, Natural Disaster Romance!!

Daniel is pursuing his Coast Guard career with a move. He immediately realizes he has left his heart behind, and takes a career risk to return to the Nag’s Head area where Gabi works as a doctor.

An exciting time as a Cat 3 hurricane is coming, the island is being evacuated, but Gabi is staying as she is currently the only doctor on the island.

A novella, so harder to get in-depth. Has a good mix of action and romance.

Daniel and Gabi are just like the Hurricane they are hunkered down together for. You know it's coming it's fierce and strong but its strength can waver and at times it can be so quiet that it seems it has passed. However it's not truly gone.
This Novella and start to a brand new series is a great start. There is romance, a small town, there is an element of danger, new friendships, reconnecting with friends and spending time with family. Our first couple Daniel and Gabi have some serious communication issues thankfully small towns are known to be great support systems and always behind couples finding their happily ever after.

Wow! I absolutely loved this book. Amazing characters and wonderful plot. Very beautifully written and easy to read.

I read this book in one sitting and I loved every second of it. The chemistry and passion between Daniel and Gabi was undeniable and sizzling. They were made for each other.

Overall I loved this book very much. If you’re looking for a second chance, small town, heroine in danger, forced proximity, military hero romance then you’re going to love it.

Gabi, Carolyn's sister, returns home as a MD with a severely broken heart. She was always so sunny and optimistic as a young lady, but now is not so confident except as an MD. Re-enters Daniel, the man who shattered her heart. Does she trust him or does she not? He's there for two reasons, to try to get Gabi back and stop drug traffickers. Who will win? In the middle of a hurricane, they must trust each other.
