I have been supremely blessed to walk the days of Lent with the Magnificat Lenten Companion. It was not simply a devotional aid, but a steady guide—quiet, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in the richness of the Church.
The following reflection, found at the beginning of the book, set the tone for my entire Lenten journey:
“Ash Wednesday, and indeed this whole season of Lent, is lit by the fire of God’s love.... His love burns, but it burns with the fire of purification. He will be like a refiner’s fire (Mal 3:2). He wants to reduce to ash our distractions, idols, and sins—whatever is not of him—so as to make us able to bear his glory.”
Those words stayed with me. Lent became less about giving things up and more about allowing God’s refining fire to do its quiet work — burning away what does not belong so that something stronger, clearer, and more faithful can emerge.
Today is Easter Sunday. In a few hours, I will join my fellow parishioners at Mass to celebrate the Resurrection and receive Our Lord in the Easter sacrament. The journey through Lent has made the joy of this day even more radiant.
I have been using the Magnificat Lenten companion since 2021, getting it out with one of my hoopla borrows every month that Lent falls in. Sacrificing one of my three monthly hoopla borrows in and of itself is a fairly effective Lenten offering.
However, reading the entry for March 18, by Anthony Esolen, person I had never heard of, sat very wrong with me:
"I lost one of my closest friends when he overheard me saying that for the nations of the West it’s either Christ or nothing."
Then of course, I had to look further into things, and was disappointed, to put it mildly.
I am a Catholic woman. I believe in the things I profess in the prayers I should say more faithfully. I don't believe in the deification of the West, or that God wants me not to love those who don't believe what I do. I don't believe that God would agree with the hateful things on Esolen's Twitter feed.
Each year I look for a to walk with Christ during this liturgical season. I find the magnificent excellent Lenten resource. Happy Easter all . He has risen!
I found the 2026 Magnificat Lenten Companion to be so helpful in making my way through the penitential season of Lent. The reflections are quite down to earth, yet uplifting. Each page bursts forth with timeless wisdom and insight.
Magnificat always produces quality spiritual readings, and this is no exception. There is a thoughtful meditation for each day of Lent. Highly recommended.
