Catalan Conversation Practice

Rate this book
Speak Catalan from your very first day — with real conversations, not word lists.

Follow Carlos and Anna through one complete day in waking up, breakfast, the bus, the office, lunch with a friend, the supermarket, dinner, a film on the sofa — then a weekend picnic, an evening at a restaurant, a trip abroad and a Sunday in the park. Sixteen natural dialogues, exactly as Catalans speak them.

Fully revised second edition. This edition answers the feedback readers gave on the first Every key word is glossed in English — numbered inside the dialogue, then collected in a vocabulary table after each conversation. No more guessing.Every chapter opens with an illustrated scene — the bedroom, the kitchen, the bus stop, the restaurant, the airport — with the vocabulary numbered on the picture, so you see the word before you read it.Verbs in the order things happen, plus the five phrases from each chapter you will actually use.A short self-test closes every chapter, with answers. The 100 most-used Catalan phrases, grouped by situation, with translations.Who it is for
Beginners and improvers (CEFR A1–B1) who want to understand and hold a conversation in Catalan — students, travellers, people moving to Barcelona or Girona, and anyone who already speaks Spanish or French and wants to add Catalan quickly.

How to use it
Read the scene. Read the dialogue and use the glosses. Learn the verbs and the five phrases. Take the test. Ten to fifteen minutes a chapter — one chapter a day for a fortnight, and you will be able to follow, and take part in, everyday Catalan conversations.

Please note
The Catalan taught here is Central Catalan, the standard variety of Barcelona and most of Catalonia. This is a conversation and vocabulary course rather than a grammar verbs and phrases are taught through use, not through conjugation drills. The book is text and illustration only, without audio.

Also by Irineu De Oliveira the same method, the same characters and the same day, in Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and Galician.
