THE DEAD CANNOT COME BACK, BUT PROMISES MADE TO THEM LIVE FOREVER

Honzio Hartinza is no stranger to loss, but rather than bury himself in mourning, he focuses on building a better empire and rooting out the traitors who wish to destroy it. His primary aim is finding Svorgin, but after searching endlessly, Honzio is losing hope of his friend’s survival. Even so, he leaves the throne’s mantle in trustworthy hands and sets sail over the perilous Lagrima Sea to honor the promise he made him and free Savoria. When circumstances leave him stranded on the island alone, he conceals his identity until he can determine his next step.

Saga Barindaughter met sorrow firsthand the day her father was captured. But under the oppressive rule of the Tariqins, grief didn’t help her survive—resentment did, a low vengeful fury that still burns within her. When a strange man washes onto Savorian shores and claims he has come on the emperor’s orders to save them, Saga’s misgivings hold her back. But despite her distrusting nature, the longer she spends in the stranger’s presence, the more she believes him and feels something she hasn’t in a long time: hope.

When a mission from Emperor Honzio is entrusted to her, Aria enters Devorin’s castle to uncover the queen’s betrayal. Her attempts to rescue an imprisoned Savorian man go awry, and she becomes wrapped in a wicked scheme and is forced on a hunt for an ancient relic alongside the queen’s specially trained warriors—the Fox, the Mole, the Hounds, and the infamous Blade. Chained with the aggravating Savorian, she has no choice but to put her faith in him so they can escape before they unwillingly find the queen the tool to achieve her dream of world dominion: the Golden Crown.

No! This can't be the end! Israh Azizi needs to make more books for this series, hint ;). I have been so invested and really don't want to let go. Book 4 was a true gem in the Heroes of the Empire lineup. The ancient crown was understood and finalized in this book as it has been a sought after power in the first three. Great development of new characters and their relationships with each other. Love the title, The Captive, and how each character had their own take on being one. A beautiful and emotional literary journey. I can't recommend this series enough. ARC read this book and a big thank you to Author Israh Azizi for letting me read and give my opinions. Can't wait for your next book!!!

This is the fourth story in the series, and follows Saga, Honzio, Aria, and Svorgin on their epic journeys to save the Kingdom and loved ones, and adjusting to their tragic losses at the end of book 3.
I loved how it follows 3 separate journeys with their own adventures and challenges, but their paths merge in an epic finale.
I loved all the nods to tradition and culture, especially in Saga's clan, and how they honoured their fallen family.
The characters face sea monsters, the city of the dead, a quest for a lost relic, and trying to fulfil their promises.
I enjoyed seeing Aria go undercover to find Jax, and stumbling into danger and a new ally. I enjoyed Saga's resilience, determination and bravery to protect her people, and seeing families and friends reunite.
It's a bittersweet ending, that sees the rise of heroes, new love, honouring the fallen, and seeing new bonds form.
I have loved being immersed in this epic world of heroes and legends, and seeing a deserved conclusion for the warriors.

I loved this book so much that I finished the last 53% in one sitting. I haven't binged that much of a book in one sitting in awhile! I have loved this entire series and this final book in the quartet was everything I could have wanted in a finale! After the heartbreaking ending to the last book, I was curious where this one would lead! I LOVE that this one followed Svorgin and Aria. I also loved seeing more of Honzio's growth and also meeting Saga! So far in the series, Mordon and Coralie have been my favorite couple, and I didn't think I could love any other couple as much. Until this book! I loooove the banter between Svorgin and Aria; it is seriously top notch! And I adore the interactions between Honzio and Saga. Going from distrust to helping one another in their grief/anxiety was so cool! I LOVE them together! I also really loved the storyline. I will admit there were a few instances where things wrapped up quickly, but only a few. The plot overall is insanely engaging, and I love that the author ties together all her plotlines. We know what happens to all the major players and the epilogue was chef's kiss to tying in a certain character who started this whole epic saga! I absolutely loved this book! I love these characters, and I highly recommend this entire series!!
*just a note, this story does have a good bit of violence, so check triggers.

I actually went back and reread the end of the previous book before diving into this one, just to put myself back in the headspace these characters occupy and I’m so glad I did. I’ll be honest: I was nervous going in. Losing my two favorite characters was such a bold, gut-wrenching choice, and I genuinely thought there was no way I’d love this installment quite as much as the first three.

But somehow this became one of my favorites of the entire series.

What really struck me is how deeply this book sits with the consequences of everything that came before. The entire story feels shaped by the impact of those lost characters: how their choices ripple outward, how their absence changes people, how grief becomes a catalyst for healing rather than just a wound. It’s handled with so much care and so much emotional intelligence.

I didn’t expect to get new romances here, and I definitely didn’t expect to like them as much as I did. This is a book full of heavy emotions, but it never loses sight of hope and connection. That’s honestly what made it so special for me.

If anything, the pacing felt a bit quick in places, but it didn’t bother me. If anything, it made the whole thing feel more like one final push toward something meaningful. And this ending is meaningful. It closes the series in a way that feels incredibly satisfying. It absolutely sticks this landing.

This whole series was such a surprise for me (five stars across the board) and it’s a little bittersweet knowing there’s no more time to be spent with these characters. I’m going to miss them like crazy, but what a fantastic ending to go out on.

Thanks to the author for the pre-released copy to read and review. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

And that concludes this quartet.

Oh my days- I’m an emotional wreck. How I managed to find the time to read this I cannot fathom. But I am in such awe that a series that I’ve been so obsessed with over the last two years has finally come to its conclusion. The first review I ever wrote on Goodreads was for the first book in this series, and so to have finished it is just incredible to me.

This book had me battling tears, laughing, grinning like an idiot, and all the muddled emotions in between.

The pacing? Incredible. Isra Aziz’s signature writing style seems to include jaw-dropping reveals and slight cliffhangers all interspersed with different subplots, and the result: an immaculate story (and one that will leave you reading for hours without realising).

I love that in this book we are introduced to new characters as well as some old ones, and to see their growth, development, and their stories being finished? Just incredible.

I’m genuinely in awe of this writer- this series is honestly so underrated it’s CRIMINAL. I’m forever grateful that I received a digital copy of this (I didn’t have the willpower to wait another month until I could buy this on Kindle).

Thank you Isra Azizi, for one of the most epic literary adventures I’ve ever had.

You know a book with multiple povs is good when every time you see the name of the character for that chapter you go “oh yay! I love them!!”
Heroes of the Empire quickly become a favorite of mine with book one, and I have continued loving it with every book. At times things did move a little quickly and issues got resolved a little easier than expected, and I wish we’d got to spend more time with some of the characters from the first three books, but those would be my only minor complaints other than I wish there was more! I’d gladly take four more books about these characters, but I can settle for simply reading whatever Israh Azizi writes next!
I loved getting to meet Saga’s character, and the addition of Svorgin’s and Aria’s povs.
This series is so good and so easy to get sucked into. And I absolutely love these characters and just want to give them all a hug and protect them from the narrative 😄
Highly recommend giving this series a read!!

Picked this up at a local book fair. Author was there and she signed it which was really cool cause I had the other books in this series signed previously. This is a top tier epic fantasy filled with memorable heroes, villains and the morally gray. Series should be read by those who love adventure, high stakes and addictive characters.

Heroes of the Empire: The Captive (the concluding volume in the quartet) follows a three-front reckoning: Saga Barindaughter claws her way through occupation-era Savoria with an axe in one hand and grief in the other; Emperor Honzio tries to stitch the Empire back together while pursuing a quiet investigation into Devorin’s queen; and Aria infiltrates Castle Yakh, chasing the last request of her dead brother, finds Jaxon Tana, only to find a castle that feels less like a seat of power than a laboratory built out of nightmares.

Reading it, I kept feeling how the title’s “captive” isn’t just a plot condition, it’s a texture. Saga’s chapters have the briny, clenched-jaw intimacy of survival, where even tenderness comes barbed. When the book finally lets her say, aloud, that captivity is over, it feels like a door unbolting in your chest. I loved how Azizi doesn’t soften the moral bruises: characters aren’t merely brave; they’re scarred into bravery, and sometimes they mistake spite for oxygen. If there’s a cost, it’s that the emotional pitch stays high so often that quieter beats can feel rare, like a candle you keep expecting the wind to take.

What surprised me most was how effectively the court-intrigue thread goes cold, not elegant, not witty, but clinical. Aria’s discoveries in Castle Yakh read like a page you shouldn’t be holding: lists, experiments, “statuses,” the bureaucratic handwriting of cruelty. That darkness gives real ballast to Jax’s arc, which is less a heroic return than a painful, partial unmaking-and-remaking of a self. And then the epilogue pivots, unexpectedly, into something almost tender: Jax, a ragged figure in the capital, telling stories to children who only know him as “Master Hand.” It’s a strange kind of mercy, and it worked on me.

Book 4: The Captive is for readers who like epic fantasy, romantic fantasy, dark fantasy, multi-POV political fantasy, and rebellion/court-intrigue storylines that don’t flinch from trauma but still insist on complicated hope, especially if you enjoy endings that tie off wars while leaving emotional loose ends on purpose. If you’ve ever mainlined Sarah J. Maas for the big-feelings momentum and battlefield romance, you’ll recognize the addictive glide, though Azizi’s palette runs a little more wintry and iron-streaked.

The end of a series is a bittersweet experience. I read the first book in 2023. It's always interesting to look back and see what I thought about the first book in a series, and what I think now at the end. I know I was dreading having to finish and put these characters to bed - though Ms. Azizi did an amazing job resolving the complex character arcs and world she'd built up. I was excited to see in the notes afterward that she isn't done with the world, though. And I hope that means that maybe we'll see some iteration of some of these beloved characters again someday.

This was one story that absolutely needed the epilogue, because if it had ended before that, I'd have been livid! But since we got that epilogue, I'm mostly satisfied. I'm torn on the ending for one of my OG favorite characters. Since there is a body count in this series, I won't name names because I will let you find out who makes it through on your own.

High action fantasy like this isn't my normal preference, and I don't think I've been converted. However, if you're going to give it a try, this series is absolutely the one worth picking up. There's so much humanity, magic, drama, and just "other" going on that while there is a lot of action and violence, there is enough to keep you going if that's not what you're here for. And she writes the romance, bromance, family drama, and basically every other kind of relationship so well! Her characters grow so much throughout the series and within each book.

I also really enjoyed the new characters we met in this one, especially Saga. She is another really awesome, strong female lead! I really loved everything about her, and I am so glad we got to see her story.

I'm so grateful to follow this story from start to finish, and I'm so pleased for the author and her accomplishment of finishing the series! I absolutely can't wait to see what she does next!

You know that strange ache that hits you when you close the last book of a series you’ve lived in for years? That was me, just sitting there, processing my feelings like someone who wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

Finishing The Captive felt especially personal because I’ve followed these characters from the very first book as an ARC reader, so watching everything collide here, the consequences, the secrets, the messy loyalty and the quiet emotional bruises they’ve been carrying hit differently.

What I appreciated about this final book is how it finally forces everyone to face the things they’ve been running from since the beginning. It’s not just battles or missions, it’s characters being pushed to their emotional limits, finally confronting grief, betrayal, and the kind of responsibilities that change you whether you say yes or not. You can feel the weight of an empire crumbling and rebuilding, the tension between what they want and what the world demands of them.

And the title The Captive isn’t just about physical capture, it’s about the ways people are held by their past, their fears, and the promises they can’t walk away from.

This story made me feel everything, frustration at certain choices, pride at certain growth, and this quiet heartbreak at how much everyone has lost and gained. And the ending… it doesn’t try to be neat or fairytale-perfect. It’s honest. And somehow, that honesty is what stayed with me long after I closed the book.

If there’s one thing I’m taking away from this finale, it’s this "some stories stay with you because they make you feel the weight of the journey, not just the victory at the end." And The Captive did exactly that.

“They tried to break you, to use you for their gain, but you resisted.” “Instead, they made you a warrior.”

This is the fourth installment in the Heroes of the Empire series and does not disappoint! You will get your fair share of found family and hidden identities, slow burn romance and multiple POVs, reluctant allies and revenge, cursed kingdoms and dangerous quests, and the finale with the truth about the ancient crowns.

This installment follows Honzio, Saga, Svorgin and Aria in their quests of honoring their lost loved ones while embarking on their own journeys to ensure that the Kingdom’s survival. Through their traditions and legends, they rise as heroes of the empire, banding together in an epic showdown, overcoming the challenges they face while battle mythic monsters and traveling through the city of the dead while on their quest for a lost relic. Together, they rise above their chains and transform their minds in ways that may just break them while attempting to fulfil the promises they have made.

WOW! Just WOW! What a way to end the series!!! What I would give to be able to read this story again for the first time. This book is easily my favorite of the entire series, which I didn’t think was possible to top the first 3 books. Beautifully written in a way that will captivate your heart and soul, and hold it hostage until the very last page. Israh Azizi you are a gem for creating this storyline that will forever be one of my Roman Empire series.

When the heroes of this isle ride up against the evil, the songs shall come back.

I never imagined this series to go on without Velamir. Still... I think this is my favourite so far.

We start the book with a map, I love them, and I need them.😂 I often turn back to the map when our heroes in the books fare on their journeys.

We return to what is left of the realm. With Prolus defeated, one would think that the realm is in peace. Still, it is not quite so.

🔹️
"Kvor Sergha ye lies."
🔹️

We are back in a realm of magic of artefacts and dead cities.
I was not sure what to expect now when a few of the main characters are gone. Still, I recognise the ones still there. General Mordon is in for quite the surprise, Honzio tries to find Svorgin, and Aria is a force to be reckoned with.

Then we meet Saga has known sorrow since her father was taken, and now she meets a stranger that gives her something rarer than even gold... hope.

🔹️
"Honzio, do not spill blood unless your blood is spilt first."
🔹️

Fighting seamonsters and cavebeings alike, it seems almost everyone is on their way to Qistool.

There is suspense all through the book and a good pace, except for the times we run for our lives.

A familiar pair of green eyes and a Golden Crown as powerful as they get.

Am I the only one who wants a Rumlok?

Halfway through, I realised I had come to love this book. The characters, the storyline, the
lost family by blood and by choice found. Not to mention the partnerships formed. So naturally, yet unexpectedly.
I would not have it any other way.

Thank you LBT for having me on this book review tour and for my gifted copy of this epub.

Ok so it’s been a min since I’ve read the third book so I need to go back and re read all the books back to back because I am just not ready for this series to be over nope I’m not. No way. Legit I am so sad. Having a hard time finding my next read now.

I absolutely love how we are following 3 separate journeys but yet someone they all merge together in this book. Let me just tell you this was absolutely epic and so good.

The attention to detail in this book is so good and how they honor each culture especially in Saga's clan and how they paid tribute to his fallen family.

I loved how they all faced so much in this book from sea monsters to a lost relic to trying to keep promises. I loved all the characters so much I felt so attached to them like they were my friends. I loved how Aria went uncover to help find Jax and well she found danger but also I loved how she found an ally !! How cool that was!!!

Saga gosh her resilience was just pure inspiration really was. She just wanted to protect her people. Need more people in the world like this like seriously !!

I loved seeing the reunions and people reuniting cue tissues!!! I cried a lot in this book like so much lol. I think I knew was the end or is it ?! Plus I just feel so much for all these characters!!

Overall yall need to absolutely go and get these books. Don’t wait go !!!

The fourth and final book in this part of the Heroes of the Empire epic fantasy universe continues on from the tragic ending of the last book. Following the newly appoint Emperor and the heartbroken side characters of previous books, we deal with the consequences of the incredible sacrifice that banished the potentially deadly Shadow magic from the world.

I LOVE this series! It has the perfect blend of beautiful world building, massive action sequences, gripping suspense, desperate heartache and the sweetest romance. It builds you up, just to knock you down, no one is safe but redemption is always available to those that are willing. It is unpredictable and shattering. Have I cried at some point in every book so far? Yes. Should you expect this one to go easier on you? Nope! Heartbreak is the name of the game with this series. Israh will come for your favourite characters – guaranteed! But I will tell you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is worth it.

My favourite thing about this book, and the series overall, is Saga! She is a strong and independent warrior that makes no excuses and doesn’t need a man to defend her (in fact it is the introduction of a man that softens her!). Saga will not bend and is willing to sacrifice so much of herself to free her people, despite every pressure to give in. I also love how complex and conflicted she is and how her backstory fills in so many of the gaps that were left by the rest of the series. Which is the role of this entire book – closure – even if it nearly kills you to get it.

This book (and series) truly has something for everyone and will appeal to a huge range of audiences. Definitely give it a go!

For transparency, I was delighted to receive an e-ARC copy of this book for review as part of a LBT Tour and look forward to supporting Israh’s future work (in this universe or another).

The Captive is the final installment to the Heroes of the Empire series.

Worldbuilding

New map for Savoria as it is a region that had yet to be immersed fully the the series. New areas are explored in Devorin and Tariqie as well.

Characters

The characters are the spotlight in this series. Multiple POV's with well edited and flowing dialogue only enhanced the reading experience of the characters backstories and lore that finalized the series off. Only complaint is the desire for the story to be longer.

Pacing

The plot is finalized with the finding of the elusive golden crown of immortality and power. The writing style only keeps improving with each publication and am interested in what is next for this author.

Magic System

Shadow Manos are no longer a viable source of power as most have died from prophecy fulfillment in previous books. The crown of power might me the most magical element that is definitely gatekept by a certain character. But not before we come to understand its potential.

My rating: 5 stars Heroes of the Empire Book 4: The Captive

Such a beautiful ending to the Heroes of the Empire. This entire series is one of the most epic, brutal, and heart-wrenching stories I've read. Azizi does not pull her punches with her storytelling.

Saga is a new character never before introduced in HOTE world, but I loved her instantly. She is a warrior that's lost everything and yet when her softer sides are revealed it proves that Azizi really can write any archetype.

This story has plenty of action and leans heavily on the emotional aftermath of the previous books. We finally see a new world emerge and monsters and myths come to life. The execution of plot twists and reveals are handled with finesse. Character arcs come full circle in the final installment of the series.

I'm not a crier when I read, but reading this book had tears in my eyes at several points. Azizi is a hard hitter with prose and phrases that last long after the book is finished.

I will forever read everything by Azizi. She is a phenomenal story teller with well-rounded characters and action that leaves your heart pounding.

WHERE DO I BEGIN?!!

Azizi took this final book in the series and made sure you would think about this world, these characters, the FEELINGS long after that final page was done. I spent a ridiculously long time staring at those final worlds. It is no easy feat wrapping up a world/series this big and epic, but Azizi did it with grace.

This four-book series is captivating, stuffed full of moments of laughter, tears, a few screams, and rich with a variety of themes that Azizi expertly explores while still progressing the plot. Azizi is one of the most underrated fantasy writers of this age, and I am just so honored to have been given the opportunity to be a part of her journey.

I am so excited to see where Azizi will take us next - perhaps an origin story, a spin-off? I'll be waiting :)

The moment I got the email for this tour, I ran for it. I’ve done tours for the previous books and they did not disappoint. Israh continues to do so in the final installment of this fantastic series. I highly recommend that you start from book one and just ride through all the trials and tribulations that the characters go through till the very end. It’s definitely one I would read over again as one of the few series that really stood out on its own. I truly cannot wait to see what else this author plans to bring to us next.

Thank you to @israh_azizi and @lovebookstours for having me and for the #gifted ebook

Heroes of the Empire has become one of my favorite series! The writing is top-notch; the characters make you care about their wellbeing and future while you’re happy when the bad guys get their comeuppance; and when you finish the last book, you’re sad it’s over. The Captive was definitely a great conclusion to the series, and if you haven’t read books 1-3, you absolutely should to get the whole Israh Azizi experience! You will enjoy it!

As sad as I am that it’s over, I rate Heroes of the Empire Book 4: The Captive a 5 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Highly recommend!

So I thought book 3 ended things well for the characters and was excited to see where the story was going to go after that.

This book somehow added so much more to the series, finishing up what was started and giving so much more closure to the characters. I loved all of the new POVs and the returning characters and had my heart wrenched out of my chest yet again. I will definitely pick up anything Azizi writes in the future.

Book four The Captive by Israh Azizi was an excellent conclusion to the Heroes of the Empire series. Again, the characters stole the show. Great fantasy world highlighting other regions of the map. An ancient and elusive crown of power was a plot focus and developed as it was always hinted at throughout the series. An addictive and rereadable series due to the very relatable and enjoyable character arcs. The author provided me with an ARC for my honest review.

I will say reading all four books in this series has been a really wonderful honor. We got the opportunity to read about some wonderful characters in the span of these four books and learn about their backgrounds. I will say the struggles these characters have faced when trying to save themselves and their empire has been truly heroic. While I am sad that this is the end I am also rejoicing because I have found another author whose stories I greatly enjoy and can't wait to read more of!

This is book four in the Heroes of the Empire series and just as action packed as the other three.

In this new adventure we get to be reunited with the familiar characters from the previous books and we get to meet some new characters.

The book follows three of the main characters’ stories and the chapters are very cleverly woven together.

I love how Israh Azizi provides maps in her books as well as a really handy name pronunciation guide.

Where to start? Well first off, I will always read Israh's books her writing is fantastic.

This is book 4 in the series, its following 3 different journeys until they become 1.
I wasn't ready for it to be finished but I enjoyed it till the very end. The pacing is great the emotional ride it takes you on is devastating.
