Me ha pasado una cosa rara. La primera, que el dibujo parece más... ¿apresurado?

There was a point in this volume where I almost put this manga down for good, right around the horse racing stretch. I've read plenty of series that have a really strong starting point and then get so long in the tooth that they run out of ideas and the plot gets more and more convoluted. March Comes in Like a Lion is a good example if you get deep enough into it.

I think there's an acknowledgement that the really compelling core of this story happens in the first volume, and that's why just that portion got adapted into a well reviewed and popular movie instead of a full series. But everything after it is compelling in its own way. It's just a very different story from the one we all got hooked on at the start.

There's a melancholy that exudes from this series that I can't look away from. The constant nostalgia flashbacks to when they met make it feel like Shun and Mio are both stuck in the versions of themselves they were back then.

Here's my detached view of where they are now: Shun is deeply unhappy (likely mental illness) in a way that never really lifts, and he's never had to face it directly or seek treatment for it, because his career success, his editor, his family, and most of all Mio keep cushioning it. Mio, for his own reasons, has built his whole life around being the one who cushions it.

You watch the same pattern repeat across all these later volumes. Shun defaults to misery no matter how well things go on the outside, and he gets a lot: a wonderful partner, success in a brutal field, more money than he needs, repaired family relationships. Mio is always there cooking, cleaning up, pulling him out of his funks, being supportive, never quite becoming his own person.

Ideally Shun would get real help and Mio would build an identity that isn't just "Shun's boyfriend." But a relationship dynamic doesn't have to be healthy to be worth portraying. Plenty of people spend their whole lives in relationships like this one.

I still care about these characters and I'm curious enough to see how it ends. Do we get to watch Shun and Mio move into their 30s and 40s and, through trial and error, find a way out of the cycles they're stuck in?

This one made me sad, which is rare for these volumes to do. I usually turn to this series for some form of comfort, so it surprised me. It’s not even the obvious kind of sorrow…it’s more like, depressive and vacuous, I guess? It’s one I deeply relate to and I’m not sure if the author is aware it’s there or not. Either way, Shun is me and I am him 😭

Shun stays iconic as he always was. But where is the romance? These two don't feel like lovers anymore...

I absolutely adore this series and these characters but what is even happening?! LOL. It’s so chaotic! No clear direction! And it would be nice if there were some kind of indication of the next scene starting!!!! It just goes into the next and sometimes, I don’t realize it for a minute or two…
Also, could we get a little more romance for these two? It’s been a volume or two…

I enjoyed this book it seems the last 3 have taken a different direction to the first four. It’s still a good read.

Pro’s:
- Very cute art
- introduces an intriguing ‘new’ character (not actually new but they get more attention and things are revealed about them)
- a very chill read if you don’t want something stressful.

Con’s:
- feels very slow
- not a very interesting plot
- I feel like we need to go more in depth with the characters, I also want to see more of a focus on Shin & Mio again! Ever since they got together I feel like they aren’t getting the same deep character they had before!
- Mio and Shuns chemistry feel as if its going away, I no longer feel like Mio & Shun belong together, I would almost be more interested in following Fukuchi or Kusano’s stories, infact i think they have a lot of chemistry and would enjoy if this volume focused a bit more on them insteat.

Just read the whole series again in preparation for finally reading volume 6 and 7….. with the way it is going, I might stop with this series because this arc is just not for me. Life is full of ups and downs, sure, but these characters are acting especially stupid in Tokyo. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s making me want to throw these books away I’m so mad at them.

4.5🌟 rounded up!

MY COMFORT COUPLE RETURNNNSSS.😭❤️ Shun and Mio's domestic life brings me so much friggin joy. I love that Mio traveled back home for a visit. The way they take care of each other being so realistic is a breath of fresh air. CAN VOL 8 COME OUT NOW?
