A violent betrayal has yanked the rug out from under her; now, cut off from her magic, she is forced to rely on her cunning and intelligence to save herself from the Hunters, an ancient order dedicated to eliminating monsters, and who have Lucy’s new family firmly in their cross-hairs.
All hope seems lost.
But the Hunters have secrets of their own, and they don’t realize that they may have bitten off more than they can chew. Lucy has a few tricks up her sleeve yet; unexpected allies, more than her fair share of luck, and the affection of a God who might be convinced to take a gamble on them all for the right price.
The actual monsters are about to be revealed, and the truth will shake the foundations of reality itself.

The long-awaited third book in the SoE series is almost here! Ready to regret ever picking up these books? I'm gonna break your heart.
If you thought TSOE and TSS were good, you better strap in because this story is even more chaotic and amazing! I don’t know what drugs Athena sprinkles in her books but gods DAMN!
✨✨ TL;DR This book is a crazy, chaotic, wild ride and I don’t want to get off it. This family is a bunch of traumatised queers running around like headless chickens and I’m here for it!! ✨✨
I don’t have Athena’s gift with words and I’m sure others will write more articulate reviews but I do want to say that this book had me in a chokehold from start to finish. It was such a wild, incredible ride and now I need the next book ASAP!
The story starts off basically where TSS ends so if you’re like me and have a terrible memory, I would definitely suggest a reread of books 1 & 2, but it is easy enough to catch up.
I feel like the first few chapters gave us a new insight into Al, Ryan, and Lilly. Especially Lilly! She was an absolute stand out character to me and I bloody loved watching her come out of her drug-induced haze and prove why women do it best. Ryan got a moment to shine too, and his determination to be strong for his family damn near broke my heart. I don’t want to give anything away but Ryan taking a moment to act like a kid for just a second before he tugged up his boots very nearly made me cry. Poor little dude.
As for Al, it was good seeing him step up to the plate and not just bury his head in the sand. We got to learn more about his magic and also who he was outside of Lai. I’m super excited for people to read the car chase scene with Al because not only does it shows you how freaking cool he is but it was super gross in the most satisfying way ever hahaha.
Two of my favourite parts in this book was the tea party with Bird, and the fourth wall break . The writing of the tea party was so vividly detailed, it made it so easy to bring the scene to life in my thoughts. As for the fourth wall break, that was GOLD! The whole scene had me cackling, it was so much fun! Poor Lai had no idea what was going on 😂😂
In my opinion, every scene with Lilly just got better and better. I freaking LOVED her relationship with Eleanore!! The feminine rage throughout was GIVING!! Especially when those two got together. I am torn between happily letting Eleanore step on me, and wanting to be her when I grow up because she’s so fucking awesome! Lilly and Aris’s adventures were just as fun! The exasperation Lilly felt with Aris at the renfaire had me cracking up, it was exactly like a teenage daughter and her embarrassing dad! 🤭 The way this book handled the topic of faith and belief in magic or the pretend in these chapters was so powerful. It was fascinating seeing the bizarre blend with the serious.
I enjoyed the snapshots we got from within the tower with Lucy, Klein, Lai and Freya. A lot of it hurt to read, most obviously the story time with Lucy and Klein. Watching Lucy realise just how much of a disaster they were in and listening to Klein’s stories was rough.
As for the villains, I could quite happily beat the Farrowatchers with my cane, even Xim, but especially Henry!! Henry and Victor pboth gave me weird vibes from the start but Henry was unhinged in this book. It made for incredible storytelling but also made me want to choose violence against them. I’m a little unsure about Xim. You could tell she was questioning everything by the end but I don’t know it’s enough to change her loyalties…
Each character shows such growth with every book and it also highlights how Athena’s writing has grown too. TSOE was good, TSS was better, and TGG has knocked it out of the universe!! The way I am so proud of Athena (and Marly) for the heart and soul they put into this book is ridiculous. Little did I know when I first read TSOE that it would introduce me to the big bunch of queers I now consider family. They are just as chaotic is the family in this book and I can’t wait for more people to join the crew.
I predict many therapy bills being sent to Athena after the way this book ended, mine included! I’m going to need book 4 as soon as possible but until then I will just scream into the void and rock myself to sleep every night hahaha 😭
This third installment, DEVOURED! Though I feel like it also gobbled me up, made me part of the world then proceeded to put me on tumble dry before spitting me out, leaving me wondering WTF just happened!
I remember a mutual friend once writing "Buckle up B***es" as part of the cover review.....I can tell everyone this is accurate! Be prepared to be taken on the ride of your life. Just when you think its safe to peek around the corner and breathe a sigh of relief think again, YOU ARE NOT READY!
Moments that totally hit me hard included chapters 14, 17, 29, 31, 32 and the final chapter. IYKYK but also if you're confused feel free to message me when you get to those parts. Perhaps my favourite thing ever is that the author is also the artist and has bought some key scenes to life with illustrations which are EVERYTHING!
You will gobble this up like a chaos gremlin if you enjoy; Found Family Gods and Goddesses SciFi Queer Rep Animals that could kill you Feminine rage
I can't fault Athena's storytelling or artistry, and both her and Marley are the most amazing DREAM TEAM you could imagine, and all the street team are hot and we love that! Bring on the next, including all the TRAUMA!
I'm actually feral over this book! The world building? Unreal. The chaos? Delliiicciouuss. The character arcs? Emotional damage in its best form (i'm also blaming Marly for this).
The family I have grown to love over the first two books is scrambled, battered, and yet still fierce and hilarious as ever. As always, Athena manages to balance dark, funny, queer, and heartbreaking without missing a single beat. There were so many moments where I cackled, cried, and looked at my kindle screen like "wtf did I just read??". The ending?? A crime. The character that starts with an R?? YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID....
I knew this book was going to be incredible, but it completely blew my expectations out of the water. I am forever part of this family full of traumatised, magical, gay, neurodivergent baddies whether I like it or not (I love it). Book 4 is expected to be in my lap tomorrow (please?).
If you love found family, feminine rage (and theres a LOT of it in this book), queer rep, gods behaving badly and magical mayhem, then this series is for you. You won't regret it.
Absolutely loved this book read it cover to cover 🙌. But that ending??? What the actual fuck 😭 I deserve some form of compensation and book 4 by tomorrow night xx
I am genuinely so in love with how strange this book is. Athena has taken some incredibly esoteric swings, including a literal fourth-wall break, which I have never seen before. It was a risk, but the writing was so well-crafted and carefully executed in a setting that allowed for it, making it work, even when it shouldn't. This story takes a setting that should be dull - sitting in a jail cell, waiting for a rescue- and makes it chaotic insanity of the highest caliber. I laughed so hard I had to put the book down, I cried bitterly at the ending, and although it answers SO MANY QUESTIONS, I'm still begging for more. I can't wait to see how this all ends, and I'm dreading it at the same time. I love this world.
Ohhhhhh boy does it feel good returning home to these characters!
Yeah, things have hit the fan and they don't actually have a home themselves anymore, but this mad, diverse group of hooligans provide all the sense of home for me as a reader.
There was chaos, the pacing was on and the stakes were high.
I love all that, however the enormous highlight for me was the feminine rage.
On our own, that rage can be a special and powerful thing. As women come together, that rage can spark and fuel each other's.
That is what we got in The God Genome as powerful, fierce women connect and together, their sparks of rage are set to become a full inferno and I LOVE IT
Okay so this will be a long one. I even cracked open the laptop to type this one out rather than using my phone. I have had a couple of days to let this book sink in so lets get into the review!
To start off, I want to say that if you thought The Sons of Echidna and The Sirin Sisterhood were chaotic.. Then strap in baby and get ready, its about to ramp up to another level of crazy (in the best way possible).
This book was absolutely PHENOMENAL!! There is no other word to describe this book other than Phenomenal. Each chapter, page, sentence, even word adds so much to the story, there was nothing that needed more, or anything that needed less.. It was absolutely perfect. It all adds to much depth and interest to the story.
So, this book leaves off right where book 2 ended. so you definitely need to have read the first 2 before diving into this one.
Al and Lily get more page time in this book and I loved seeing more of these two characters. We get an insight into how Al's magic works and him finally admitting to himself what he wants. Plus we get to see Lily develop into this BADASS woman with so much pent up rage! Oh and for good reason, she comes out of her drug induced haze and becomes such an amazing character.
Each character gets there moment in this book and they are so wonderfully crafted, even the villain's get a moment. In saying that, if I could beat Henry Farrowatcher into pulp, I most certainly would. The Farrowatchers are written so well, Henry just outright crazy, while I ended up feeling kinda sorry for Victor - even though he is probably just as bad as Henry...
Okay now for that ending.... I was 100% NOT PREPARED! Like book 1 and 2, it ends on a cliffhanger.. And this one is brutal, you can count on this one ripping your heart out! I will just have to trust that book 4 will stitch it back together.
There is so much chaos, love, and determination packed into these pages that its hard to put down. It is definitely a series that I will forever recommend to anyone that will listen.
I want to note that am so lucky to know Athena and Marly, and so endlessly proud of their journey along side these characters they are creating. The development in the writing from book one outstanding. I absolutely love the style of writing, it keeps you captivated until the very last page. There are also so many writing concepts I have never read before in this books and loved it - that 4th wall break was amazing.
I am a person that struggles with Aphantasia, I LOVE that this book has illustrations from both of Athena and Marly, it helps my brain understand certain aspects. Athena has a style of writing that makes it easy to understand while still being otherworldly but I did appreciate the Tea party scene illustration (it is one of my faves), as it was so beautifully written but it was hard for my brain to comprehend what it looked like while understanding what was going on (hopefully that makes sense haha)
So in conclusion... READ THIS SERIES ASAP!! It is well worth it.
This is the third book in an incredibly addictive series, and I absolutely loved every second of it. I devoured it so quickly, and now I’m impatiently waiting for the next one. So much happened in this book, and the emotional intensity made it such an amazing reading experience
First of all, the cover is absolutely gorgeous. The sprayed and stencilled edges fit the vibe perfectly. The illustrations throughout the book add so much to the story, and the character artwork at the start of each chapter makes every POV feel even more immersive. It’s such a stunning book visually
And the ending? INSANE. I genuinely don’t know how to express my shock other than saying wow. I’m still thinking about it
One of the things I love most about this series is how many POVs we get, and this book used them so well. Each character brought something unique and had their own standout moments
Al’s POV was incredible. I loved getting a deeper look into what he was dealing with and how he was feeling throughout everything. Learning more about his magic was fascinating, and I think he’s such a well-written, determined, and strong character. I hope we get even more of him in the next book because I adore him
As always, I loved Candy. She continues to be one of my favourite side characters ever. She is just so cool
Ryan had such a surprising storyline this time, and it completely blew me away. I didn’t see it unfolding the way it did, and I’m so excited to see where it goes next book
Freya’s storyline was amazing. She has been through so much in the past, yet she remains strong and grounded. I loved reading every part of her journey. She has so much potential, and I truly think she’s going to be even more incredible in the next book
Lai was absolutely intense this time around. There’s a particular scene of his, paired with artwork, that I have never seen done in a book before. I’m genuinely in awe of it. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever read. He was a complete unit in this book, smart, strategic, funny, and full of brilliant ideas. I’m obsessed with him
Victor’s POV was such a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t expecting to get his perspective, but I’m so glad we did. He’s such an interesting character, and there are definitely a lot of answers we still need from him. I hope he has a much bigger role in the next book
Lilly was another standout for me this time. She’s so intriguing, and I need more of her as soon as possible. She is so well written!!
Lucy went through so much in this book. My poor girl was getting emotional whiplash from every direction. Her backstory is so intense, and seeing her fight through everything in her chapters made me love her even more. Her POVs are always a highlight, and she continues to be such an important, compelling character
This book had me in a chokehold from the first page to the last. It was emotional, fast-paced, surprising, and beautifully written. I love this series so much, and I truly cannot wait for the next one!!
"Men reminded Freya of forest predators, except predators hunted out of hunger or necessity. Men pointed their weapons like children brandishing sticks, more eager to show dominance than to survive."
Athena you have once again cracked open my chest, scooped out my emotions, and handed them back to me gift wrapped in blood, badassery and brilliance.
This book is the best bloody example of ramping done right in a series. I went back and read my previous reviews for the first two books and awwww I thought the first book was full of so much whimsy and joy, even the bad guys were cuties... Welp, the family apparently needed more trauma. At this point I think they have more layers of trauma than the Farrowatchers tower has levels. But hey hurt people, hurt people - or whatever instructions Lai follows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Athena will have you clutching your chest in anguish one moment and cackling the next. (Girlies 1 Rooster 0) While I'm on the topic of emotional whiplash: Athena how did you manage to give me empathy for literal human (monsters, derogatory), culinary crimes (porridge with corned beef??), and still manage to make this book feel like a devastating homecoming.
Three books in and this series still has me in a chokehold, a warm embrace and has me ready to fight someone if they dare hurt my baby Bird.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
4.5 stars rounded up! The ending ripped my soul out of me and I am still processing it. This is one of those times I wish I had the power to dive into a book.
A Fourth wall break, Gods and Monsters, a mustang and the multiverse ? All ingredients for an intoxicating concoction.
Following the epic cliff hanger of Book 2 comes an action packed third installment in Bliss' series, The God Genome.
Athena M. Bliss returns in full force, really strapping down readers/fans and giving them a deep dive into her universe. Her plot is engaging and her biggest strength is her character building. When Athena writes her characters, there is an intimacy, a deep connection. Her Characters are written as if they have existed for years, long before the books existed and it is very easy to connect to these characters as a reader. I promise you'll walk away with a favourite ! Athena writes in multi-perspective chapters. In this third book, we are treated to more time with side characters of the previous books characters like Lai, Freya, Ryan, Halcyon and a persepctive I didn't expect to be my favourite...Lilly. I have never read a book where an Author has successfully switched between a wide variety of characters and can kept me engaged quite like Athena has in this book.
Diverse characters, queer and neuro-divergent rep...Ren faire...Monster hunters...Cinematic action scenes, all part of a universe that is best paired with a glass of something cold to drink.
Thank you to Author for the e-ARC copy in exchange for a review.
So here i am with yet another Athena Bliss review ! But this time we are talking about book 3, baby! I've been so eager to read this book with all the snippets Athena has shared!
So where do I even start? 😫
Book 3 continues on from the exact spot they left us at in book 2, the Sirin Sisterhood, and it continues on with more chaos than ever before ! Honestly, i couldn't put this book down and read it over 3 days (mum life got in the way) from all the action, the emotional toll (that ending has me still crying!) And continuing the bond of their found family it really was a rollercoaster!
I won't get super into this book review as I want you all to experience this ride yourselves because it is sooooo worth it ! I am yet again waiting on the next book it is that exciting !
If you buy anything this year , please buy Book 3 (and books 1 and 2) 😍💗 i promise you wont be disappointed!!!
Let’s start this by saying I don’t know WHAT to say. Athena, I trusted you! And then you ruined my life? Thanks for removing my will to live and ability to function? I guess? What the fuck did you do? WHAT DO YOU EVEN MEAN? *SCREAMING INTO THE VOID*
In all seriousness though, The God Genome picks up right where The Sirin Sisterhood left off, which was one hell of a cliffhanger and to say that I’m satisfied to know how that wrapped up is an understatement.
…until TGG left me worse off.
This book comes packed with more chaos, more action, and a whole lot more lore for all of the characters in The Sons of Echidna series which expands on not only the overall plot, but I’m sure the many books in this worlds future.
There were some characters that got more screen time in this third instalment that thoroughly scratched my brain, and it’s no surprise that everyone is just as chaotic as each other and there’s a small part of me that hopes this series ends with a giant group therapy session at Candy’s- with a professional therapist and a pharmacist at the ready 😂
The God Genome really hit hard on the feminine rage, which was truly a delight to see- because while my favourite characters might be two of the the boys (Klein and Lai), the women really let it rip in this one and it was BADASS.
It’s always nice to return home, even if there’s no actual house right now because the cast is displaced. And it’s a nice reminder that home is where the heart is 🤍
This book made me cry. This series is actually so funny? How did we get here 😭
Major highlights for me with no context: horses, cheese, castration, seduction, eyeballs, wall breaking, helicopters… Martha 🥹
This book is for those that seek comfort in intricate worlds. The ones that you wished you could climb into as your parents read you a bedtime story. Even if you didn't experience that, this book still welcomes you with open arms.
It pulls you in and makes you a part of the family. Lucy is an amazing protagonist and she only continues to grow and learn as this series has progressed. Their intricate detail to how magic works and behaves in this world is refreshing and I cannot accurately state how tangible this story feels. Between the lessons each character learns, and the soul searching so many of them have... it wouldn't odd if you shed a few tears along the journey.
But, if you enjoy seeing cis men being taught primary school lessons such as "Keep your hands to yourself" then this is not only the book for you, but the world for you.
First and foremost Lilly is badass. I was shocked what that waif of a girl could do. I laughed so much in this book, the banter and jibs were the best yet!!
☁️FQOTB: “ you can flash some foil or a pretty, holographic sticker at me and I’ll help out.” - Halcyon
^ same 😂😂Halcyon has become one of my favorite beings.
The artwork in chapter 11 … is now my background on my phone. I love it so much. Even though ALL of the art is amazing!
Al x Lai are so freaking cute I can’t stand it…
This book leaves you on a heartbreaking cliffhanger…. Like I’m sobbing. I need Athena to get going on the next book because 😭😭😭
Athena and Marly you clever lil mofos..... im sending you my therapy bill when I finally start going to therapy.
Do you like a break out heist, chaotic chosen family, messy characters and pure chaos put into readable, intoxicating words that mean you stay up til 2am finishing a book and then get left on a cliffhanger?
Yeah this is the book for you.
With badass goddesses, shape shifting chaos junkies, multiple threats to life and Al getting to shine like the bad ass that he is, The God Genome is a most EXCELLENT third addition to the Sons of Echidna.
And now if you'll excuse, I'm going to go suffer over that cliffhanger....
Book 3 in The Sons of Echidna series absolutely knocks it out of the park! From Chapter 1 you are hooked and The God Genome is action packed with a beautifully rich lore and an utterly unique magical world! Athena is a truly talented author who has a way with words and creativity! I won't spoil it, but you are definitely in for some surprises! Complete with utterly gorgeous illustrations, this is a must add to your TBR!
This book really exceeded my expectations! I knew it was going to be amazing because I love these characters- fiercely! It really shock me though. The ending was absolutely brilliant and I feel like this series just continues to get better and better. If you haven’t read any of Athena’s work you are in for a treat! It’s fast paced, fun, beautiful and captivating!
Thank you for letting me read this early and for having me apart of the amazing street team 😍
I just finished this book, and I am in shock. This book made me feel almost every emotion. So many incredible moments in this story, and the art as always is incredible. Love Athena M Bliss and Love The God Genome.
Athena's books always feel like coming home. How does one write a book that's action-packed yet cosy? I dunno, but Athena somehow manages it. As usual, I will be eagerly awaiting the next one.
So I came across this lovely couple a few Armageddon Expos ago and I enjoy encountering authors out in the wild and choosing their books because of them and how they have a genuine conversation.
I had been waiting to read what would happen next as it has been quite an exciting read so far. Some of the characters from previous books as more minor characters step forward and develop their stories as well as progressing the main characters between their activities.
Also to note the artwork, even the little picture at the beginning of each chapter, just enhances the book and the connection to the characters.
Will definitely be buying the next one after the way this one ended.
