Sky High: A Porter Brothers Novel

Rate this book
Planning a wedding party is easy—if Nina Scott can manage to stay out of Angelou Porter’s bed.

Nina has built her career managing other people’s reputations. Guarded, confident, and determined, she doesn’t have time for love—especially not with a man like Angelou, whose tattoos, swagger, and smooth charm hide grief he hasn’t quite learned how to let go.

But when they reconnect in Paris during her best friend’s engagement and return home as maid of honor and best man, sparks reignite fast. What was supposed to be casual quickly becomes complicated, and what started in secret soon feels impossible to ignore.

Between champagne toasts, wedding chaos, and late-night confessions, Nina and Angelou find themselves standing at the edge of something real. But love isn’t simple—and neither of them knows if they’re ready to fall.

Because sometimes the biggest risk is believing you deserve the happily ever after you never planned for.

First, I love the level of black excellence between the characters! Everyone was successful in their prospective careers. Now Nina worked my nerves, she definitely was a runner a track star and her reasoning wasn’t enough for me lol! Angelou had some work to do too but he got it together. I loved the vulnerability of the male characters, and the representation of getting help! I loved the love story, and happy they got it right! Can’t want for Trevor’s story.

Angelou & Nina
Word on the streets, Angel is no longer blocked 😂

If you read Creative Differences, then you know Nina hit it and block it, my good sis kept running from my boy Angelou. When they are forced to work together to pull off the wedding week of the year, Nina is forced to be communicate and be in close proximity with Angelou. The tension? could be felt all the way from CA to NY.

I loved that I get to see more of Mackenzie & Jackson and their beautiful wedding week and also get to see the journey of Nina & Angel getting to their HEA. It was a lot of back and forth between them but that is life.

One thing I appreciated that the author did was make Angelou present while they worked through what they are going through. Often times it is one is forced to leave in the name of space, but this stood out to me. He gave her the space she needed, but he also let her know that he was not going anywhere.

I love the blend of their professions, family, the depth, and topics of grief and therapy. plus, there were some surprises. I am really enjoying the author and her writing style.

HUGE thank you to the author, D.H. Renfroe for this ARC! This review contains spoilers*****

Wow, I enjoyed this book so much!
Life can come at you fast, and boy was Nina and Angelou on a fast track! Usually, I’m not a fan of a baby being thrown in the mix so soon, but the way it was done by the author here gave a dose of reality that I was expecting. Romance often gives us the perfect MMC for our fantasies, but I really appreciated the realism of Angelou’s grief with this one. We never got to meet Della, but you can tell how great of a person and mother she was by witnessing her boys process life without her in real time. I love that this series is unfolding the Porter brothers’ journey with such care, vulnerability, and support.
The author’s writing is excellent. I love descriptive writing using literary devices to bring a scene to life. If you’re describing hair, tell me that it shimmered like the midnight sky, not just that it’s black, lol. I appreciated the descriptive writing of this author,as well as the pacing of the story itself! I can’t wait to finish the rest of this series!

I didn’t vibe with this one as much as the first. The pacing felt a bit too fast, and I found myself wishing for more depth in their relationship development. It felt like a big part of their journey was missing, especially when it came to seeing them actually work through their issues on the page. The accidental pregnancy element also felt a bit rushed and didn’t add much to the overall story for me. Still, I’m a fan of this author’s work and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what they write next.

Sky High was such an emotional and beautifully layered story. I didn’t expect to feel it as deeply as I did, but something about Lou’s journey really got to me. There’s this quiet heaviness he carried that made me empathize with him from the very beginning. His grief, his guilt, and his attempt to keep it all together—it was raw and real in a way. Even as I’m writing this, I’m getting emotional.

The bond between the Porter men was absolutely top tier. Even while each of them was working through their own pain, they still found ways to show up for one another. That sense of brotherhood and unspoken love grounded the story and added such a meaningful layer beyond the romance.

And speaking of the romance—Nina and Angelou’s chemistry was undeniable. Their connection was messy, passionate, and full of vulnerability. Watching them navigate their emotions and figure out if love was worth the risk felt both heartbreaking and annoying (at times) but mostly hopeful.

Sky High isn’t just about falling in love—it’s about healing, forgiveness, and believing you’re worthy of happiness. This one will stick with me for a while.

I am a forever fan!

Omg Sky High gave me such a warm, comforting feeling — I couldn’t put it down.

I saw so much of myself in Nina (my block queen 😌). She just wanted peace, not chaos… but sometimes that chaos is what helps you let go and finally be open.

And Angelou? Watching him drop the playboy act and step up as a man, a leader, and someone learning to deal with grief — that hit deep. Losing Della really shook him, and you could feel how much that pain shaped his choices.

This story shows that love doesn’t stop at grief — you can heal, grow, and still love through it all. 🫶🏽

Nina and Angelou took me on a ride, and I don’t even like roller coasters! 😂 If being in your own way had names, they’d be Nina and Angelou. Both needed to do some serious work, open their eyes and step aside to see what life really looked like.
Nina is fiercely guarded, while Angelou is running from reality. Together, they create a story packed with surprises that kept me on the edge of my seat. This is the second book in the series, and it does not disappoint!

DH Renfroe keeps my emotions on a rollercoaster and I’m willingly getting on the ride every time! I found myself holding my breath over and over again as I journeyed with Nina and Angelou.

Nina’s walls are high and well-fortified. She’s terrified of falling for all that Angelou seems to be offering her, though he’s given her no reason to be wary.
Angelou has spent much of the recent years finding ways to run from his grief after his mother’s passing. But something about Nina makes him want to stand still… with her.
They were just having a good time but now, they’re fighting against their hearts that want so much more.

Every time I started to relax and giggle too much, I checked my progress and had to remind myself not to get too comfortable. Because one thing I learn over and over again in my favorite books is that there’s always room for a surprise or plot twist!

Nina and Angelou started out as bang buddies and the chemistry between them stays consistent. (Read: the spice is spicing!)
Seeing and experiencing Nina and Angelou’s growth as individuals was so heartwarming. The deepening of their connection was almost palpable.

Come fall in love with Nina and Angelou.I promise it’s a trip worth taking.

Loved it!

One thing that stood out for me was the dynamic between Nina and her parents. Nina misinterprets her parent's relationship and watching her navigate those misunderstandings was eye-opening. Her flawed view of their relationship shapes how she approaches love, highlighting the impact that family can have on one's understanding of connection and intimacy. It was fascinating to see how Nina's perspective evolved as she began to recognize the complexities of her parents' bond.

I also really connected with Nina's fear of falling in love, especially her worry that she might lose herself in the process. That feeling of wanting to maintain individuality while also being vulnerable in a relationship was something I found deeply relatable.

Angelou copes with the grief of losing his mother throughout this book, and his journey through therapy to process that pain was good to see. I also appreciated how the book delved deeper into the bond he shares with his brothers and father in the aftermath of their mother's death, showing the strength of their connection

Overall, watching both characters grow over the course of the story made it even more enjoyable

A swoony, emotional, and unputdownable romance!
If you enjoy romance with some of the best tropes-second chance romance, forced proximity, secret relationship, and a touch of grumpy/sunshine energy-this story delivers it all. Nina and Angelou's chemistry leaps oft the page, and watching them navigate wedding chaos, emotional baggage, and their undeniable connection was everything 1 wanted and more.
DH Renfroe master fully balances fun banter with deeper emotional moments, creating characters who feel real, Hawed, and worthy of love. The opposites attract dynamic is done so well here, with Nina's guarded strength and Angelous charming vulnerability making for a compelling paring.
Thank you to the author DH Renfroe and the publisher for the ARC. I'm so glad I got the chance to read this early-it's a
дет!

You’re Not Alone

🤩🫣”You’re Not Alone”: nope 🙂‍↔️…nada🤔…never (“tight like glue”)…with “project triplets” 😳🤯🤷🏾‍♀️🤭. Yet, the Porter brothers were uniquely independent, separate career journeys, creatively equal & still fiercely devoted to their family‼️Oh wow, this fictional family is/was an inspiration & an anomaly. …but what a pleasure to witness no sibling animosity, competition & or urban black market pharmaceuticals ventures to success etc. 🤣😂🤷🏾‍♀️🤔‼️Nevertheless, look how this Porter/Smith/Scott family grew exponentially in just a few months & still counting😍‼️“Sky High: A Porter Brothers Novel (Porter Brothers Series - Book 2)” Nina & Angelous romance 💘 journey was complex and just as entertaining as book one. More so, the beauty & continuity of these characters & plot development was superbly executed👏🏿👏🏾👏🏽💐. ..”Sky High” was a fantastic read🥰‼️

Just like Creative Differences, Sky High delivers all the feels and then some. Nina and Angelou are two beautifully complex characters who need to learn how to get out of their own way and into each other’s hearts.

Nina’s guarded by her perceptions of her mother’s choices in her own marriage, while Angelou is still grieving and unwilling to open up… until Nina. When they’re thrown together as maid of honor and best man, their walls start to crumble and what’s revealed is raw, real, and romantic.

I devoured this story and loved every moment. DH Renfroe has once again crafted a heartfelt journey that’s equal parts emotional and swoony. I’m already counting down the days until Trevor’s book!
Thank you to the author for trusting me with this gem! 💫

Sky High! This was such a beautiful emotional read.

The way that DH Renfroe wrote this love story….. chefs kiss.

At first Nina was being problematic but she got it together. And the Angelou not being ready to take care of his responsibilities because of grief. So happy the Porter men show up for each other because Angelou needed that. Angelou & Nina’s character development was everything. From therapy to being new parents. The black excellence throughout this book made my heart smile. From wedding planners to lovers!

The Porter men have easily become my favorite brothers.

I’m so excited to read Trevor’s story next.

All the Feels

Sky High by DH Renfroe reminded me that romance doesn’t need prolonged tension to feel meaningful. What stood out most was the author’s refusal to let conflict linger just for the sake of drama. Instead, I was able to watch Nina and Angelou choose each other with intention, which made their relationship feel grounded and sincere rather than performative.

I found myself blushing, laughing, and quietly emotional in the same sitting. The story creates space to actually enjoy their love, not just endure obstacles. For readers who value softness, communication, and presence as much as passion, this book is an easy recommendation.

Love doesn’t fix the pain, it teaches you to face it.

Whew… Sky High took me on a ride. Nina and Angelou are both fighting love like it’s the enemy and losing, beautifully. It’s messy, emotional, and full of that slow-burn tension that keeps you turning pages and clutching your chest.

This one isn’t just about falling in love, it’s about facing your pain and realizing sometimes love shows up right in the middle of your healing.

P.S Those Porter men have an amazing father!!!!

I freaking loved it!

Read Creative Differences first though.

Soooo good

I liked Mac and Jackson’s story, but I absolutely loved Nina and Angelou. OmG, this book had it all…the chase, the catch, the insecurity of falling as well as the fear, and the unexpected happenings that life throws at you. These Porter men are something else, but they had an amazing blueprint in their dad. Sky High will keep you reading and not wanting to stop. I’m excited to see what’s going to happen with Trevor because what he’s getting now, I don’t think he deserves it. You definitely need to get into The Porter Brothers! Happy Reading Y’all!💋

This is a first read for me by this author. Sky High is a second chance love story about Angelou and Nina. Angelou was running from the relationship he knew in his heart he wanted because he was still grieving but didn't want to deal with it. Nina had preconceived ideas about love because she felt like being in love meant losing yourself. Then they both received a phone call that forces them to work together planning the Bachelor/Bachelorette party for his brother and her best friend.

Real freaking cute! (And the cover is gorgeous—the couple looks so good!)

I always enjoy a romance storg where the relationship started off unconventional or very casual.

Angelou is that guy and Nina is that girl! They both came with some heat and vulnerability. Good insights on grief and love. Hot love scenes. Some things I didn’t expect, but happy ending nonetheless🫶🏾

Excited to read Trevor’s story!

4.5 STARS. I enjoyed getting know Nina and Angelou, and reading their story. Nina is a very independent and successful woman, who has written herself off from falling in love. Like Nina, Angelou, had no plans on falling in love. Their journey to love wasn’t , easy but it was definitely worth it in the end.

A great read, loved the character development Nina and Angelou ambitious and career driven but madly in love with each other. Im glad how the author wrote about grief-having a support system and going to therapy-not spoked about in the Black community but it’s turning around.

I really enjoyed Sky High! It was great getting to get an update on Jackson and Mackenzie’s story while also diving into Nina and Angelou. I loved that this story was full of good vibes, healing, passion, love and friendship. This is a feel good read that also has some spicy sex scenes to match.
