The Complete Fire on Ice Series

Rate this book
This series has five full-length novels about hot hockey stars and the women who steal their hearts.

Bound

College senior Kate Camden has learned to adapt - to her last year of school, to the promise of motherhood, to the fact that she’s doing it all alone. But just when she’s learned to adjust, heartache threatens to break her apart.

Pro hockey player Jason “Ryke” Ryker has it all: adoring fans, a promising career, and a beautiful wife. But when his seemingly perfect life is shaken by tragedy, he’s left questioning whether having it all is ever more than an illusion.

When circumstance brings Kate and Ryke together, they discover they don’t have to hurt alone. Bound by a grief that haunts them both, they must rely on one another to survive heartbreak. But that grief is more powerful than they realize, and the tie that binds them together may ultimately tear them apart.

Captive

Two years ago, Jason and Kate Ryker were brought together by grief and bound to one another by love. Now married, they’re confronting their fears together.

But heartbreak finds them again, and the ties that bind Kate and Ryke are tested as she struggles against fear and sadness. As a grief counselor, Kate understands all too well the pain of her clients. And while her husband’s career as an NHL forward is at an all-time high, he’s coping with the frustration of feeling powerless as his wife's hopes slip away.

Edge

One bad hit has left the career of young NHL Center Luke Hudson in question. When he arrives for rehab with a minor league team, his injury has robbed him of the edge that made him great.

Team trainer Adella Price’s job is to help Luke get back in peak condition. But their one on one sessions shake her resolve to remain unattached. Dell is hands-off to all hockey players, even one as charming and successful as Luke.

As Luke starts to get ahold of his game again, he loses his grip on his heart. Helping Luke get his edge back brings to light what Dell is missing from her life. But those who want them apart are relentless, and with their careers on the line, Luke and Dell must decide if their love is worth risking it all.

Drive

Years of training are about to pay off for hockey player Nikola Vereshkova. A call to play in the big league means he can finally come through for those who need him. His relocation to Chicago comes with built-in friends – and one gorgeous enemy who was less than impressed with him after their first encounter.
Sadie Alexander knows all about the drastic measures men will take just to get laid. She’s not only experienced it first-hand, but lived to tell about it in her online column, Sadie Says. And even though she’s a die-hard independent woman on the outside, the recent marriage of her best friend has her secretly feeling more alone than ever.
Getting close to a foul-mouthed Russian hockey heartthrob was the last thing Sadie expected. And the timing couldn’t be worse since she’s sworn off of men for a writing assignment. The line between love and hate is eroding, and Niko and Sadie find themselves in deeper than they ever expected. Could something that started out wrong end up being just right?

Release

NHL player Orion Caldwell protects his own. He’s an enforcer to his core, but he was the one left defenseless when his longtime girlfriend broke his heart. Now he’s all about his game, but spending the offseason in his hometown forces him to confront painful issues –both old and new.

Samara Cross just wants to be invisible.

Heavy on the romance, but lighter on the ice hockey side of things, this was an easy read but monotonous. I found some of the themes pretty repetitive which is why I gave it three stars but the most of the characters were likeable. The story lines are mostly predictable and you pretty much know what you're going to get. There's a bit of over the top dialogue and drama to perk things up a bit but they were light sports romances. The predominant theme of the books were women that had a sad/traumatic backstory that made them not want a relationship and the hockey players that wanted to be with them and protect them and had to overcome this hurdle. This was in every novel in this boxset.

One theme that I didn't like that ran through the books was derogatory comments towards females to add extra drama (I assume this was the reason for their presence anyway). While it wasn't heavy throughout the series, it was noticeable and I hate it when authors have their characters make backwards comments towards and about women. LIke, HATE IT. Name calling, women being tramps, for want of a better word, because they're chasing hockey players, women being called classless because of how they dress (the men like modest women - yawn), pretty much every other female character in the book desperately wanting the hockey players regardless of what role they played in the story (even the random nurse that was hired for a character was trying to sleep with one of the Heroes while his pregnant wife was in the next room - sheesh). There was one comment from a male character about how nothing turned him off like a woman who thought so little of herself that she'd flash her boobs to a stranger. Pretty sure before the character had this epiphany that he'd found a special woman that he would have been into said boobs. And yet no derogatory comments about the hockey players who went through women like toilet paper. Yuck, gross, vomit. The 1800s called. They want their ridiculous gender standards and inbuilt misogyny back, please and thank you.

Book 1 - Bound - Kate and Jason. Trigger warning - this book and the next touch on the loss of a spouse and late term miscarriage. Jason and Kate meet via grief counselling. He's attending after losing his wife of only a year or so and she's there after losing her 18 week (or so) old pre-term baby. Jason is taken with Kate straight away and after finding out that she's in need of a job, offers her the position of his personal assistant even though he doesn't really need one. I found this strange as he's a high profile and in-demand athlete so you'd think he'd be a bit more cautious, but there you are. I didn't mind Jason even though he would occasionally sulk and/or be moody because Kate kept throwing up road blocks to hinder any potential relationship. He was pretty much a nice guy, though, who wanted to take care of Kate.

I liked Kate to start with, but I was pretty much over her by the end of the book. Her character was extremely repetitive and started to cross well over into annoying town. If you weren't aware she had a miscarriage, difficulty with intimacy as a result and more hang ups than a Tillandsia, you certainly have it drummed into you by the end of the book. There was a lot of her body wanting Jason desperately but her mind telling her NOOOOO in big shouty letters because she'd given into desire before and look how it ended, yada, yada, yada. This got really old, really quickly. This unfortunately made the story line equally repetitive as the plot was basically Jason trying to chip away at her defences, her being into him and throwing up road blocks at the last second that sent mixed messages and then the whole thing starting over again. He had the patience of a saint.

Kate also had a tendency at times to show what I think was meant to be an attempt to be strong and assertive but it mostly left me rolling my eyes because he was her boss. He'd thrown her a bone by giving her the job so getting snappy made her seem like a bit of a tool, to be honest. On top of this, she tried to make it clear she wanted things to be professional between them but would still go into bouts of jealousy and throw tanties his way along with a good dose of 'It's fine. I'm just being stupid'. You sure are, matey. Just to be clear, his actions were always above board making her carrying on annoying and ridiculous. And then after allllll of that nonsense, she was surprised that he liked her. Geez, Louise, how old is this girl again? Does she need help tying her own shoelaces? A lot of her story line revolved around her miscarriage which didn't leave a lot of room for character development. She'd lost her friends, who she was, etc. Which was strange since she went on a camping trip with friends (that she apparently didn't have earlier) and they played... wait for it... kiss or shot. It's a complicated game worthy of many a thirteen year old. You have to do a shot or kiss someone you haven't kissed before. GASP. So of course there were scheming women there just waiting to get their little mitts on our Hero. Then as per usual, Kate would get jealous, they'd argue and she'd retain her mantle of Queen of Mixed Messages. Blech. So yeah, I wasn't the biggest fan of Kate and her high maintenance and penchant for woe is me syndrome.

There was also a bit of the cliché authors use when there's a deceased partner. Yes, they were in love at one stage but we don't want the reader to get hung up on that so we make it clear that the ex wasn't really a very nice person so it's okay for the lead male to move on with his life. There was also the 'I'm not like other women'. Of course you're not, love. You're uber special.

Book 2 - Captive - Kate and Jason...again. They're now married - the wedding was skipped which annoyed me a bit. The quickest way for me to explain my feelings towards this book is to read the paragraphs above about Kate and then multiply it by one thousand because by this stage, I started to skim the story because I'd had a gutful of her repetitive character. I do believe I remember thinking 'Here we go again', because that's pretty much what it was. There was very little character development as the paranoia set in about her falling pregnant and losing a child again. Understandable, but made for extremely monotonous reading. She'd have states of depression and then highs when something clicked for her, e.g. her wanting to go down the adoption route. The story, unfortunately, was pretty much the same where Kate whined, didn't want sex (which put a dampener on a romance book, just for the record) and Jason spent his time chasing her and enabling her drama.

Book 3 - Edge - Luke and Dell. Luke was dropped back into the minor league after an injury. Dell's his trainer, the daughter of a tough and successful coach who's an icon of the game and she has a son. You don't know the identity of the son's father but it's pretty predictable who it's going to be. There was also more melodrama in this book similar to the two above where Dell assumes Luke is playing around with other women so she over-reacts, gets angry and stomps her feet....for no reason. Apart from this it was an easy read with a cocky but mostly likeable Hero. I'll mention that there's attempted sexual assault in this one. It's very brief and made less serious, unfortunately, because the victim became aroused shortly after it happening. I thought this was pretty poor form as far as plot devices go. Pretty sure most women don't go through a traumatic and violent experience only to be wanting sexy times shortly afterwards.

Book 4 - Drive - Niko and Sadie. Sadie is Dell's (from the previous book) best friend who moves to Chicago with her. Niko was on the minor league team Dell previously worked for and Luke played on while recovering from his injury. Sadie meets Niko just before the above couple's wedding rehearsal where he pretends to understand little English (he's Russian but has lived in the USA since childhood) in order to pick her up. Gross with a capital G. I ended up liking him and the story, but thought this was pretty yuck. He's a successful hockey player. Pretty sure he doesn't have to pull out deceitful tactics to pull a woman especially after we're told what a player he is. And if he does do this so he can get them into bed and pretend not to really understand them - gross again. There was also the predominant trope throughout this series where the 'uninterested' female gets jealous and starts an argument about the guy seeing another woman which, AGAIN, they hadn't. Niko's family had a bit of trouble with a debt collector and Sadie's family had died in an accident so she was anti-relationship.

Book 5 - Release - Orion and Sam. This was my favourite book of the series and the reason I gave the boxset three stars (I probably would have given this book 4 stars on its own). I liked both of the main characters. Orion was a small town sweetheart who went to school with Samara (Sam). They ran in different crowds but he wasn't a jerk which was very refreshing for a jock. She had trauma (of course) about getting into a relationship because of a violet ex-boyfriend which is what some of this book's drama is built around. She refers to a secret and doesn't let Orion know about her issues until towards the end which I found frustrating. Orion had come out of long term relationship where his ex (from the same small town) had slept with his best friend from school. Don't worry, she comes crawling back so there's this book's dose of other-woman drama. When you find out Sam's secret, you've probably put the pieces together yourself already so it's a bit of a non-event. The characters from the other books aren't really in this one much because it's the off-season for a majority of the book so Orion is home for the break. It was a sweet story that ended differently to how I would have predicted. And FYI for the author - your kidneys aren't in your chest :)

I loved this series, I binge read it in two days! I love hockey stories and this author writes lovely ones. There’s sexy times but they are mostly sweet and heartwarming stories. The characters have their layers and their issues but in common they all are honorable, kind, good friends. This series chronicles the lives of four hockey players in the Chicago NHL team, and the women they fall in love with.

BOUND and CAPTIVE - Ryke & Kate

Kate and Ryke meet in a support group for people who are dealing with tragic loss. Ryke lost his wife to a car accident and Kate lost her unborn baby at 10 weeks of pregnancy. Both also feel guilt because Ryke’s marriage was having problems even though he loved his wife deeply. Kate’s boyfriend left her when she got pregnant, and when she lost her baby, she had to deal with two losses. She was just getting onboard with the idea of having a baby when she lost it so she’s mired in feelings of guilt. Their story spans two books in this series because their issues were so strong and prevalent. Even though they were attracted to each other from the first moment they met, Kate was very fragile and lost in her grief. When a second tragedy befalls them, their road back to happiness was even bumpier than at first.

I loved the heart wrenching moments of vulnerability and moodiness that Kate went through, and loved that Ryke was frustrated but accepting. He was so committed to loving Kate that he was willing to go through hell, just to be with this woman that he loved so completely. In spite of her many character swings, her defensiveness, her flings into deep depression, she loved Ryke with all her heart and she fought against her grief and her depression so she could be a good girlfriend/wife.

This was a passionate and angsty story and I loved every minute, even though I sometimes got impatient with Kate. But grief is a different road for everyone and she was a valiant soldier in following through her recovery.

EDGE - Luke & Dell

Luke is Ryke’s best friend, and a total player; he was a blond, blue-eyed hunk, very accustomed to the constant one-night-stands in the life of a famous hockey player. When he injures his knee and has to transfer to a minor hockey league to rehab after recovering from his injury, he meets the team’s trainer, a beautiful redhead called Dell. The immediate attraction for Luke was the total indifference in Dell’s look and the fact that she was a no-frills woman. Totally gorgeous, pint-sized and fiery to match her red hair, she was very knowledgeable about hockey, excellent at her job, and loved as one of the guys in the team. Due to the league’s no-fraternization policy, they had to take things slow, once Luke got over Dell’s restraint.

Dell has a little five-year old boy, Kyler, who is her whole world. She didn’t want to have a man in her life due to past relations and her hectic work schedule that involved being on the road with the team. But Luke is persistent and too charming and he got away with it. Both Dell and Luke had over-bearing fathers. Luke’s was a drunk hockey has-been who hounded Luke over his playing and Dell’s is a hockey team coach with a reputation for being an a-hole. Both parents interfered and made their being together a challenge.

For Luke to fall in love with a woman and forsake his man-whoring ways was a big deal, but Dell was the one and he was hooked. It was adorable to read their banter and their serious times, to see Luke dealing with Tyler, Dell calling Luke “Blondie” and all of their sweet and sexy moments. I loved seeing Luke man up and become a family man.

DRIVE - Nico & Sadie

Dell had a best friend from college, Sadie, who lives with her and Kyler. Sadie was her roommate in college, close like a sister and she helped Dell raise Kyler. When Dell has to leave on the team’s away games, Sadie is the one who stays with Ky. Sadie has abandonment issues because she lost her parents and little brother in a plane accident when she was in high school. There was an aunt who moved from Europe to help her finish high school but moved back to her home when Sadie started college. So, except for Dell and Kyler, Sadie has no family. She’s a successful journalist and has a column similar to Sex and the City, except it’s about her adventure in singledoom.

Nico comes from extreme poverty and is playing in the smaller league where Luke did his rehab. They became good friends and when he’s called to play up in Luke’s team, he still feels insecure of his place in the team. He works hard so he can help his family now he has a much better salary. When he meets Sadie, he fakes being a Russian with little knowledge of English. Sadie had to go but gave him her number, then surprise! They meet at Luke and Dell’s wedding, where Sadie is maid of honor and Nico is one of the groomsmen. And Sadie finds his English very much improved.

Their future squabbles are fun to read, the zingers Sadie sends over only work to increase Nico’s sexual attraction to her. This story was a little more straighforward once both opponents sheathed their swords and accepted their attraction and hot chemistry. Their issues were mostly Nico’s family issues and Sadie’s fear of giving her heart away and suffering a crippling loss again.

Nico was very cocky and Sadie very snarky so they were a match made in heaven!

RELEASE - Orion & Samara

Possibly my favorite read in this series. Orion Caldwell was such a nice guy! He loved with his whole heart, he trusted completely, and he would do anything for his family. Crushed when his girlfriend cheated on him with his best friend, the last thing he wanted was to go back home. In spite of this, he did because his mother and sister needed his help. His brother-in-law suddenly left and abandoned his family and Orion needed to help his struggling sister.

When he goes to buy milk for his mother, he meets Samara, who graduated with him from high school. He was friendly, she was not, even though she checked him out. She used to be a goth in high school but now she was fresh faced and gorgeous. He was intrigued by her look and her indifference and a little miffed that she was so unfriendly. So of course, he came back for more!

He chanced upon Samara again when he took his niece and nephew to the library for story time and found that Samara was the one reading the story, doing the voices, smiling at the children, delighting in what she was doing. She was a completely different person from the gruff indifferent woman he met at the Supersaver. Determined to know more about her, he goes on the offensive, asking for a date, being his charming self.

What I loved about this story was the unfurling of Samara. She was awkward, shy, uncomfortable around Orion at first. It was obvious to me she had been victimized earlier, but Orion’s gentleness, his wonderful manners, the way he cared for her and his family, were successful in opening up her defenses. Little by little, a wonderful, generous and caring woman is revealed, who wins over Orion’s family and friends.

Orion’s ex makes several appearances and I loved that Orion takes no prisoners and tells her off, no kindness allowed. Call me spiteful but I enjoyed that!

The final part of this story was a little dramatic and emphasized Samara’s and Orion’s huge hearts.

Overall, what I loved about this whole series was the handsome men and their awesome women. Each man and each woman had their own kind of gorgeousness, all were honorable, kind, generous. All four couples made for a very closed knit group of friends and they appear in each other’s books as supporting friends. The women from the first books accepted the new girlfriends and welcomed them into their hockey world. I loved the togetherness, the family spirit among friends, the joking and the camaraderie. It felt good to finish but I will miss them!

Reading this complete series was great! Each story could be read as a standalone (in my opinion) or one right after the other, as they connected characters from each book.

Title: Fire On Ice Series
Author: Brenda Rothert
Genre: Contemporary Sports
Romance
Rating: 4/5

This is a really good series if you like a sports romance centred around hockey players and the woman who bring them to their knees then I highly recommend you read this.

This collection features a different couple in each book apart from the first two they're based around the same couple, I suppose you could read them as standalones but once you read one you'll want to read the rest.

Bound & Captive are based around Ryke & Kate who meet at a support group they've both experienced tragedy and are trying to find a way forward.

Drive is Luke & Dell's story, Luke finds himself being sent to a minor league team as part of his rehab after suffering a bad knee injury Dell is the team trainer & therefore off limits but the more time they spend together they get to know each other and when the time comes for Luke to return to his team they decide they're going to pursue whatever it is that's been blossoming between them, of course it's not all plain sailing when obstacles are thrown their way. I did enjoy this one but out of them all it's my least favourite, I suppose there has to be one.

Drive is Nico & Sadie's story he was Luke's teammate in the minor league before being moved up to the major league to play alongside him & the others & she is Dell's best friend, you could say their first meeting doesn't go as planned but it sure made fun reading. This was my favourite the bad boy manwhore brought to his knees all in the name of love.

Release is Orion & Samara's story he's back in his hometown spending some downtime before camp when he meets Samara they had originally went to school together but now they're spending time getting to know each other on a whole new level. Orion is a total bad ass on the ice but off it he's a total sweetheart unless you're messing with his family or those he loves. This was my second favourite in the series I loved Orion he was a complete sweetheart but he certainly had a touch of alpha-male about him and he totally rocked it.

Like I've already said this is a brilliant series those who love a good sports romance will not be disappointed it's not all mushy lovey-dovey stuff there's plenty of hockey lingo too, I certainly learned a thing or two. I believe there's going to be a spin off series which I'm looking forward to reading.

A solid 4 stars out of 5.

Got this bundled series of books as a gift from a book buddy. She loves Brenda Rothert's books and thought I would too. She was right! Took me awhile to read them all because I had to interrupt a number of times to read ARCs and a few other books, but I kept picking up where I left off and didn't seem to miss a beat enjoyment-wise. Brenda Rothert was a new author to me. The books are wonderfully written with well-drawn, engaging characters and interesting story lines throughout. This series kept me turning page after page. I highly recommend these wonderful books and look forward to reading more from this author.

Loved from beginning to end

I just have to say that I loved this series from beginning to end. Yeah, Kate really annoyed me but Ryke more than made up for her. Then we have Luke and Dell. I love a strong single mom and Dell was that. With a goofy, hot Luke lusting after her. Next, we have the sexy Russian Niko and his strong willed Sadie. Loved their banter. Last but not least, Orion and Samara. The old fashioned boy and the lost girl. I loved all the books and I'm looking forward to the next set.

Icy heat!

After another author I love went on and on about this series, especially when it went on sale as a box set, I couldn't help but snagging it up. And it was worth every dime and minute spent.

While Ryke and Luke are my favorites, each of these soft hearted hockey studs stole the show in their own books. The author created characters with stories you care about. Realistic and somehow relatable, even though few can actually relate to being a hockey stars romance interest.

Definitely an author I'll look for more from.

Overall pretty good

I've had book 1 of this series for a while but hadn't read it due to not wanting to have to buy the rest of the books. Was excited to get the whole series for $.99. Books 1 & 2 were a little cumbersome to work through the issues in my opinion. Books 3-5 were much better to get through. Loved the characters. Glad I finally got to read the series.

I highly recommend the Fire on Ice Series. I rated each book in the series either 4.5 stars or a full 5 stars! Overall, I give this series 4.5 stars!

Bound
Bound is the beautiful, at times heart-wrenching love story of Kate and Ryke. Both have had to endure substantial losses and suffered through the grief. Although most of the book is fun and flirty, at times it is emotional. That is normally normally not my kind of read, but this is SUCH a beautiful love story that I would highly recommend it! My favorite line from the book..."Sometimes from darkness can come light."

Brenda Rothert's writing, together with the story line and her depth of characters makes for one amazing read! Ryke has to be one of the hottest and most patient heroes in all of the romance novel world! This is only the 2nd book of hers I've read but I'm already a huge fan! A solid 4.5 stars!

Captive is the continuing story of Kate and Ryke. It picks up where book 1, Bound, left off. Kate is helping others as a grief counselor, and Ryke, well he's still the hot, sexy hockey player! Their story still has it's ups and downs; some that had tears streaming down my face and others that made me smile and warmed my heart! Oh, and parts of it are hot as hell! I love their story SO much!

Brenda did such an amazing job of telling their story! Another solid 4.5 star rating from me!

Edge
Edge is the story of Luke and Dell. Luke is a teammate of Ryke's who gets injured and has to rehab in the minors...where he meets Dell.

Edge has it all...forbidden love, angst, steamy love scenes (the shower scene was my favorite), drama, and of course heart-melting romance!

I loved the first two books in this series and didn't think it was possible to like this one more...but I was wrong. I completely adored this book!!

Drive
Drive is the story of Sadie and Niko. She is Dell's best friend and he was Luke's teammate in the minors. There's is an intense and passionate love story. This story is filled with angst, passion, and heartwarming love. I loved it almost as much as I did book 3 of the series, Drive. Overall I give this book 4.5 stars.

Release
Release is the story of Orion and Samara. The 5th and final book of the Fire on Ice Series. Orion is the teammate of Niko, Luke, and Ryke. As I've read the books in this series, each has become my favorite. And this one is no different. This is such a sweet love story, I absolutely adored it! I give it 4.5 stars!

Hot Alpha Hockey Men

And the women who melt their hearts. Four players from the same team, Ryke, Luke, Niko & Orion. Brothers by the love of the game. Four women, Kate, Dell, Sadie & Samara, each with their own stories. We all have a past, either good or bad, but it's what we do with our present and future that defines us. Each couple, unique to their story let's you see that regardless of their celebrity status, the boys have their own past hurts. Ms. Rothert writing brings everyone's emotions to the surface and you can't help but feel them as if they were your own. Can't wait for the spin off series, On The Line.

#1 BOUND is the 1st book in 5-book series. NHL forward Ryke lost his wife of a year to a drunk driver. Psychology major Kate lost her unborn child shortly before graduation. They meet in a grief support group. Both have serious baggage and commitment issues. But Kate needs a job and Ryke needs an assistant. It's about small steps in a long journey. This book kept my interest. Looking forward to #2---but may need to take a break 1st :)

5 stars for The Complete Fire on Ice Series by Brenda Rothert

What a great read. I loved reading the complete series in one book. Excellent characters. Easy to read and fall in love with hot sexy hockey players and their strong and significant others. Wanted more. Can't wait for the next series based on the Fire on Ice crew. Hopefully we can catch up with some players.
