Hazel Lewis has a serious problem. The guy who hired her to conduct a seance before he died turned out to be a serial killer with a demonic contract, and the seance itself was a trap. Hazel escaped with her life, but not as she knew the bite of a demon is spreading through her body, letting the supernatural bleed into the world around her, and the now-dead serial killer is waiting to take over her body if she dies.
Hoping to contain the damage, Hazel moves to a small house in a remote location. She figures she'll stay on her own until she gets a handle on her new dark reality, but she soon finds out that she's not alone. There's the reporter demanding answers, the friendly neighbor with chemistry she doesn't need and problems he can't talk about…and the mysterious face she sees beyond her window, watching her every night with glowing red eyes.
Making her hunger.
Hazel knew a little bit about the world beyond the physical. Now she's learning how much she doesn't know, including who she can trust...and who she can become if she trusts herself enough to give in to the shadows stalking her dreams.
I devoured this book. I had such a hard time putting it down, and when I did, it consumed my thoughts. It was incredibly intriguing, and the strange situation alone was enough to grab me. Hazel is a medium, hired by a dying man to do a séance and winds up getting attacked by demons. As a result, Hazel finds herself slipping in and out of material reality and in grave danger. I loved Hazel. She's very shrewd, and a multifaceted character that is both brave and terrified, resilient and breakable. She was great. Ligat was fun, and I loved watching his arc unfold. The first half of the novel had heavy emphasis on horror, and Ligat can be a very spooky dude. Maxwell stole my heart. He's not actually a little guy, but this nerd is a certified Little Guy to me. Honestly, all of the characters were great.
If there's one word I would use to describe this book it would be visceral. Every action scene, whether it be a haunting, a fight, or a sex scene is a full body experience. Crowley's ability to set a mood, to create and atmosphere, and engage multiple senses makes everything feel real, even when what's being described is more surreal than anything. The scene with the floral wallpaper is going to live in my head rent free soley because of the sound. A lot of the gore in this is gross, but in the way gore is supposed to be gross. It's not over-the-top just for the sake of it. It is weird, though.
One thing I enjoyed was that not everything is spelled out for the reader. Characters will do things, make plans, and keep secrets without the reader knowing, and honestly it was refreshing. I knew where some of it was going, but there is a certain enjoyment in not having things confirmed until the characters act. I like when I don't know everything, it adds to the tension and raises the stakes (even though these stakes really couldn't be higher).
This was a great read. I had a lot of fun reading it, and it hit on so many of my favorite tropes. It's not a genre changer, but it knows what it wants to do and does it well. The book was solid from beginning to end, especially when it was stressing me out.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC that made this review possible.
This was moderately enjoyable. When I first started reading this book, I had to double check that there was actually going to be romance because the first 15 to 20% was extremely action packed and leaned heavily into horror. Overall, the story was enjoyable, but the romance itself felt underdeveloped. There was a strong insta-lust dynamic, but it was never really clear why the two main characters were so drawn to each other. There was very little emotional build up before they jumped into spicy scenes. That said, there were plenty of spicy moments throughout the book, though they never felt overly gratuitous.
The strongest part of the story was definitely the worldbuilding. The way the author intertwined demons, the dead, and mortals into one cohesive system was intricate and genuinely clever, and I found that aspect far more compelling than the romance itself.
My biggest issue was with the characterization. The main character did not feel especially unique or fully developed, and honestly, that applied to most of the cast. There were not many side characters, and while they did not play huge roles in the story, they still could have benefited from more depth and personality. I also figured out the plot twist very early on, so it did not have much impact by the time it was revealed.
Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the ARC!
I’m a sucker for a book that might actually be a horror romance. Although this isn’t exactly that, it was pretty dang close. I’d consider this one a paranormal romance first, but with some horror sprinkled in. Honestly, the first chunk of the story has some pretty horrific moments (but I like that in a book). There’s this whole thing with flowered wallpaper that did wig me out a little. Not like nightmare scary but def something that will live rent free in my head for a while.
One thing I really did love about this one was the world building. The author created something I hadn’t read before and props to that considering the sheer number of books I read. Also, bonus points for having a lead character over 30. Hazel was someone I could relate to even though she was an accountant by day (and a medium by night) which is so not my jam. The male lead was also interesting and I liked getting to see what his whole situation was. The romance was fairly solid (if a little rushed) with a fair amount of spice (but not so much is boring or lame).
Overall, this was a fun read and I’m curious if there may be further books in this world. I’d be pretty stoked if that’s a thing. And if you’re looking for a spooky paranormal romance, I’d give this one a whirl.
'Want Me, Take Me, Haunt Me, Make Me' by Isabel Crowley mixes elements of multiple genres, including horror, dark romance, and mystery to create somehign that will make your heart race and will stick with you long after you finish the last page. Our main character, Hazel, falls into a trap when she agrees to perform a seance for a client. The client turns out to be a serial killer with a contract with Hell. Hazel is alive but ends up cursed by demonic forces beyond her control. She's infected, and her reality is warping. The supernatural is merging into reality around her. This book is filled with tension and a slow creeping dread that something is very, very wrong. Hazel feels like she is losing control as the demonic influence spreads and feels like she isn't alone and being watched. Is it just paranoia, or can she not trust anyone? The pace is quick and grabs you at the beginning. The middle slows down a bit but still keeps its hooks in you, and the end speeds back up. This book keeps a constant tension in the reader. There is a constant sense of isolation and fear, and it just works! Im giving this book 3.5 out of 4 stars, rounded down. I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for my opinion.
I truly enjoyed this book, even though it was a bit of a journey for me. At times, the pacing felt a little slow, and I found myself struggling to push through certain sections, but the overall experience was absolutely worth it. The opening of the story was fantastic, and I deeply appreciated the "slow burn" approach. What really set this book apart for me was the strong focus on the horror elements; it didn’t just rely on the romance but created a genuinely eerie and unsettling atmosphere. That said, when the romantic payoff finally arrived, it was incredibly satisfying and well-earned. One of my favorite aspects was the aura of mystery surrounding every character. They don’t fully explain their motives or reasons, which kept me constantly guessing and intrigued. The vibe of the writing reminded me slightly of Anne Rice’s style… though the plot is completely different, it captured that same dark, atmospheric, and haunting essence that I love. This is definitely a book I would have purchased for my own collection, and I highly recommend it to those who like their romance with a heavy, mysterious dose of horror.

It’s peculiar because I had anticipated a dark romance, but this turned out to be an unexpectedly heartwarming and delightful story. I didn’t mind it at all. Be warned, though, it’s a slow burn. The romance is sweet and not overpowering. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and their banter is incredibly charming. I couldn’t help but kick my feet and giggle throughout the entire story. I highly recommend it. 4 stars.
*3.5 The writing was amazing, the characters were great, and the plot was soooo interesting and different. Ironically the only thing I hated was the Romance. Horrible title btw.
