What if your doubts were never real to begin with?
The Doubt Illusion reveals the secret behind obsessive and overthinking loops — not as evidence of danger or moral failure, but as tricks of the mind.
Drawing from Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT), Dr. Frederick Aardema shows how obsessional doubt is built — and how easily it collapses once you see through the illusion.
Through vivid metaphors, sharp clarity, and gentle humor, Aardema guides you beyond the usual advice to “tolerate uncertainty.” Instead, you’ll learn to see through the illusion itself — the mental sleight-of-hand that turns imagination into “proof,” feelings into “facts,” and possibility into “urgency.”
Written as a compact and highly accessible guide, The Doubt Illusion distills decades of clinical research into clear, intuitive language. It is designed as an introductory entry point to I-CBT and is suitable not only for individuals struggling with obsessive doubt, but also for family members, caregivers, and teenagers seeking to better understand how these doubts arise and why they feel so convincing.
This compact guide distills decades of research into clear language for anyone who finds themselves trapped in “What if?” spirals — whether or not you’ve ever been diagnosed with OCD. You’ll

Really educational read. For anyone who struggles with OCD or loves someone who struggles with it, please read this. It’s so so helpful. Fredy Aardema is the real MVP.
I'm almost positive this entire book is an AI summary of the introduction and perhaps a few chapters of the previously released Resolving OCD series. I could not get more than 30 pages into The Doubt Illusion without being distracted by the strange writing style. I skipped to the Resolving OCD books, which are much better. They are by the same author but written completely differently, which adds to the AI theory. I've found several reviews similar to mine in regards to being written with/by AI. I recommend skipping this and going straight to Resolving OCD unless you want the most awkward barebones primer possible which to me felt completely unnecessary and may only serve you if you know literally nothing about OCD and don't want to read a textbook (which are Resolving OCD books are).
I loooove ICBT but this feels very AI written. Even if it’s not, it had the repetitive and shallow writing style that’s an AI hallmark. Could potentially be a useful first glance at ICBT, but the resolving ocd series is much richer and more useful.
The Doubt Illusion is a clear and engaging introduction to Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT). It explains obsessional doubt in a way that feels simple without being simplistic, showing how imagination can drift away from reality and create doubts that feel convincing even when nothing supports them. The metaphors, especially those drawn from magic and theatre, really land and make the ideas easy to see. At times, it feels like a light being turned on in a dark room.
It’s a short book, but it doesn’t feel rushed. Rather than asking you to fight or tolerate doubts, it shows how they are put together in the first place, which makes them feel far less mysterious and much less powerful. It also fits naturally with the Resolving OCD series, working both as a strong introduction and a helpful complement. A small book, but a meaningful one. Five stars.
This book does what it says it’s going to do. It’s a compact introduction to ICBT, and it does that really well. It’s full of metaphors that are really helpful. It’s meant to make the core ideas of ICBT understandable, and it does a great job of that. It’s a great starting point for people who are new to ICBT. If you want something more detailed, the Resolving OCD books by the same author go much deeper. Overall really helpful and well done.
Excellent book full of fresh and highly useful insights into the nature of OCD. The ICBT approach expands on other treatment strategies and really gets to the crux of why OCD causes so much anguish and offers simple strategies on how to effectively take the best path toward recovery. I believe this book will help sufferers understand what is happening for them. Highly recommend.
