Monstrous World #2.5

Changelings: A Fantasy Monster Romance: Volume 1

Rate this book
Nothing has gone as it should…

Balar led his band of five brothers from the warring savannahs in the south to the human land of Eirea on the promise of two safety and mates. In the growing village outside the human city of Dundúran, they’ve found the first. Yet, year after year, Balar watches as others find their destined mate, but never he nor any of his brothers. What could an orc or fae have that he, Balar, a manticore in his prime, does not?

Everything is starting to go wrong…

Imogen is a woman alone, and she likes it that way. Burdened with a large red birthmark upon her face, she’s kept herself apart from others. With just her dog, donkey, and goats, she’s built a good life for herself out in the wilds beyond the village. Everything is just as it should be—until one morning, she finds a big manticore sleeping on her land.

Life can change on a whim of fate…

Imogen doesn’t like people. Or visitors. And especially not suitors. Too bad for her, this overgrown housecat has decided she’s his mate, no matter what she says.
Balar hasn’t come this far, talked to this many women, and waited this long to be denied. He’ll have his mate, prickles and all. Now, just to convince her. And keep his nosy brothers in line long enough to woo her.

Fans of Ruby Dixon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and cat jokes will love this cozy, romping monster romance novella! Check sewendelauthor.com for content and trigger warnings. Mature content intended for readers 18+.
This is a novella in the world of the Monstrous World series. Can be read alone but best enjoyed after book 2, Ironling.

Who knew big cat dudes could be so swoony? Changelings has become my next favorite book in this series after Halfling (sorry Balar...Orek had my heart first). I loved this shorter format where we got to experience two characters falling in love without much angst or world building. It was a nice break in between the longer novels of this series.

We got to see some previous characters as well as meet new ones. The manticore brothers were my favorite and had me cackling. They're such a stereotypical group of brothers - always teasing but they're there for each other when they really need it.

Balar and Imogen's meeting was hilarious and adorable - although Imogen might not think so. But Balar quickly redeemed himself and showed that he was the best mate for her. I knew he was gong to become one of my favorite characters from the moment they met. When I wasn't laughing at his banter, I was swooning and melting onto the floor. This book is the perfect definition of courtship.

I'm so excited the author is giving us another manticore book next year. I'll be counting down the days!

**Thank you to the Author for the ARC; all opinions are my own.**

I really loved getting back into the Monstrous World with the first of Wendel's planned novellas! This one has more of a rom-com feel rather than like super intense plot and I honestly really needed that right now!

Balar is the mayor of the otherly and he has been looking for his kigara with no luck....UNTIL ONE DAY. Imogen and her animals cross his path and then it's all over from there 🤭 I absolutely loved how devoted Balar was (he is a bit pushy, but still respectful) and he is exactly what Imogen needs. I loved the character growth. I loved that Imogen and her sister understand each other more. And I loved getting to see older characters that have been mentioned previously! All in all a fun time and I cannot wait for the next part!!

So, I think I may have discovered the perfect birthday gift. Well, for me, at least. This one is truly special, not so easy to mail, given its size, but it comes with a handy advantage in the form of wings, so flying is definitely a perk.

Still, this gift arrives with a set of requirements: a space to bask in the sun, plenty of nice, fluffy pillows, and the occasional brushing with a comb. Oh, and it purrs and grumbles. This gift may come alone, or it may come in a pack, or should I say, a pride. Those additional gifts are also cute, funny, and fuzzy, including one that leans more toward the serious, reserved side. They may seem overbearing at times, but trust me, you'll get used to them.

Now, what is this gift I keep gushing about? Well, the gift I want comes in the form of a... manticore. Yup, I need a manticore in my life, someone as devoted and sweet as Balar, the MC of Sarah's Changelings, Vol. 1.

Someone just as persistent and steady. Someone who doesn't shy away from hard work. Someone who will gift you a fluffy blanket to share on a rainy evening. Someone who will look at you and truly see you as, not as a sum of failures or flaws, but as a whole person. Someone who will make you fall in love with yourself while you're fawning over him, too. And yes, he may look like an overgrown cat/lion to some (sorry, Balar), but to me, he is the epitome of what a partner should be, a true kigara, as he would say. Someone willing to learn and change. Someone who is there to stay.

I could go on gushing about Balar and his brothers, or about Imogen, the shyly soft yet prickly FMC, but it would never be enough. Trust me, gift yourself the magic of Sarah's Monstrous World series and meet Balar, Imogen, and everyone else. It will be a gift that keeps on giving.

Thank you, Sarah, for having me on your ARC team once again. It's a gift I will cherish forever.

I am forever grateful to be on the street team for S.E. Wendel, and getting to read the ARC for Changelings felt like such a gift. This novella has easily become one of my absolute favorites she just keeps outdoing herself with every release. 🥹💖 in this story Balar a manticore who’s spent years searching for the mate fate promised him ends up crossing paths with Imogen a woman who loves her quiet simple life far away from people. She’s perfectly content with her little homestead, her animals, and her solitude until she wakes up to a giant manticore sleeping on her land. Balar knows immediately she’s his mate even if Imogen wants nothing to do with suitors, surprises, or giant overgrown housecats claiming her. The slow burn, her fierce independence, and his determined (but adorable) attempts to win her over made this such a cozy monster romance treat. And of course his brothers add the perfect amount of chaos.Highly recommend diving into this one but for the full magic definitely read it after book 2. We don’t have to wait long either it comes out November 30th!!

I'm currently binging cozy romantasy books and this was really good! Very slow burn with Imogen learning to love herself and Balar being unrelenting respectful and supportive.

I was actually pretty impressed with Balar. He recognized that Imogen had deep seeded hurt and pain and that just because he loves her, that doesn't magically fix things. He put time and significant effort into winning her love. She was his mate and he had feelings from the get-go, but that never stopped him from doing the work. It took months for her to come out of her shell and it felt pretty darn authentic.

Love did fix things in the end but not magically, it just helped two lonely people heal and find each other.

The ending did drag a taddddd (Imogen really held out lol, Balar was soooo patient!) And it was a very low stakes and mellow love story without much action or adventure but it was still very sweet. I'm glad I decided to revisit this world and I am looking forward to reading each of the brother's books.

"To everyone who dreams of a quiet little cottage in the woods. And for a sweet, hunky hero to find them there."
Yes. Please.

Imogen prefers to be alone, in her little cottage sanctuary in the woods (life goals). She might come across as a grump, but she has her reasons. Fierce, independent, self-sufficient - I love her. Balar is the most adorable golden retriever sunshine kitty (OK manticore) who cares for his people and his town - I love him.

Balar encounters Imogen after a late night out and definitely not at his best, but he realises she is his kigara. The one he has been searching for. Not just a mate, but a home.

Cue the sweetest campaign of gentle courtship. Swoon. Such a sweet and cosy read, with plenty of laughs, a couple of tears and more than a few moments of strength and growth. The brothers are 1000% kitties at heart, even the stoic one, who can't resist naps in the sun and being all around adorable.

This book was just the warm hug with a hint of spice that I needed. S.E. Wendel's stories always feel like coming home, the writing is so comforting and easy with tales told that are full of emotions that will have your heart aching as much as it will have you feeling all the warm and fuzzies. All of the books in this series straddle the perfect balance between focusing on the two main characters and their relationship and the trial and tribulations that they must overcome that existed before the couple met and starts to escalate during the story. The love that forms slowly and gently over time in this book is so sweet and pure and genuinely was such a joy to read. Returning to this world was such an absolute pleasure, and I already cannot wait to go back and meet characters both new and old.

Bala left his formed home in the warring savannahs, leading his five brothers to the human land of Eirea on the hunt for two things, safety and a mate to spoil. Just outside the human city of Dundúran the manticore brothers decide to settle down in the growing village populated by halflings and otherly folks. However, as years pass, Balar watches those around him find their destined mates but her finds no luck and neither does his brothers, much to his confusement as who wouldn't want a manticore in his prime. Imogen lives alone and she likes it just as it is. With a large red birthmark on her face she isolates herself from others for fear of being targeted and singled out. With her dog, donkey and heard of goats she feels complete out in her small cabin in the forest. Everything in Imogens life follows an order, just as it should be until one morning she finds a massive manticore sleeping on her land. Let chaos and love ensue.

Balar and Imogen are two sides of the same coin. Balar is loud, larger than life, but hugely caring and protective and will do nothing for his mate once he finds her. However, Imogen is not the challenge he anticipated, with her quiet, shy nature and absolute insistence that due to years of bullying that no one could want her because of her prickly personality and the birthmark on her face, she is not one to be wooed easily. Balar quickly realises that his outlandish displays of affection won't go down well when it comes to Imogen, and that instead a different plan must be put in place. It is from then on that we see Balar's dedication to Imogen, and his determination to make Imogen his mate. Imogen is such a sweet personality, her isolation due to the feelings she has about her appearance due to her birthmark makes my heart ache. I enjoyed reading as Balar brings Imogen out of the shadows and into the light, how under his care and persistence she begins to shine brighter and find her confidence. Their love is sweet and hard fought for, demonstrating how love for someone isn't conditional of looks or specific actions but instead understanding, patience and care.

This story itself had its claws in me from the start. I always thoroughly enjoy learning more about this world and its characters. We get to see some old faces again as well as some new ones, those that exist in both Balar's and Imogen's friendship circles. Reading as Imogen's tiny circle gets bigger and bigger as she finds herself and adjusts to a life outside of solitude with the company of her animals. S.E. Wendel makes it clear that their is nothing wrong with taking what you need from the world and having some time alone as you need, but instead how the right people can enhance this, how they shouldn't expect you to change to best fit them but to want you to be at your happiest. I am already ready for Soren and Maeve's story, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of the manticore brothers and I am ready for more of their banter and antics.

Thank you so much to S.E. Wendel for sending me an e-ARC to read and review early.

3.5 - ⭐⭐⭐💫

"You're right, urisa, I am yours."

Changelings is an interconnected standalone novella in the adult monster romance series, Monstrous World. Written in dual first person POV, the story follows Imogen and Balar, a human and a manticore who find themselves dancing around a courtship neither expected. Imogen has spent her life pushing people awhile, having accepted her life is centered around the animals she cares for. Balar, the newfound mayor of the Otherly and elder brother of six, has yearned to find his mate, his kigara and when he finds Imogen at his weakest moment he refuses to let her fall through his fingers. As they find each being drawn to each other again and again Imogen begins to wonder if she can accept someone in her life...and Balar wonders if he will finally have the life he always dreamed?

This is a cute slower burn romance for monster romance lovers!

Imogen is a woman used to being rejected by others and, as such, has pushed people away. She sees her birthday mark as a curse and has accepted a life of being alone. She has grown into an independent and strong female and you can see she struggles to accept support as a result.

Balar is a manticore who has dreamed of finding the one and when he does he refuses to lose her. He is goofy and cheesy and so very determined. I loved seeing him navigate Imogen's boundaries and also his protective nature. He is open and honest and the breath of fresh air that Imogen needed.

This book is about 4 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There are approximately 3 spicy scenes with the first appearing around the 82% mark. The spice is explicit with knotting, oral pleasure, and dirty talk. Imogen is inexperienced and is taught by Balar to enjoy spice which adds some fun to the spice. As such the spice level is given because of the nature of the spice, not because of the amount of spice. Also, Balar is a Manticore so...yeah XD

The story itself is low stakes and fairly easy to follow. There isn't any real tension as it is mainly focused on our two main characters navigating their feelings and facing their pasts. I liked exploring Imogen's relationship with her sister and the shenanigans of Balar's brothers. I felt the romance was cute but the build up was very drawn out - Imogen specifically has a lot of hang ups she's still actively working through. Balar is just adorable but naive at times. I would have liked more tension to keep things moving but overall enjoyed the read! The epilogue is very cute!

Overall, if you loved this series this is a fun read to tide out over until the next book!

This was read on Kindle Unlimited.

This was only 260 pages, so in theory it could've taken me a day. But I really wanted to savor not only the romance, but Imogen's healing journey. So let's fucking have it (if you know, you know 😜):

-Balar the love-sick manticore and his less-than stellar intro to Imogen.
*He loses a single feather while drunk off his ass, and she finds him passed out on her way home.
*The guy comes to the next morning like "Holy, shit, she's my mate... don't know her name but gotta find my mate... again!" and shows up trying with a slightly chagrined optimism of "sorry we couldn't have met under better circumstances".
*Imogen goes "nope" and slams the door. I get it.
-Imogen having to learn she's made herself a permanent victim/faces her fear of getting too in her own head.
*Not getting personal here, but I felt that. I like that she and Neomi have a heart to heart where Imogen's been so isolated/overthinking her own smaller worry of "oh, a nice man whose taking the time to get to know me actually likes me 🫨?!?!" that she doesn't even realize Neomi and Collin have been struggling to conceive. Being isolated could only serve Imogen for so long. Love that Neomi called her out for essentially gate-keeping tragedy/anxiety. We all need that person.
-This needs to be Seven Brides for Seven Brothers situation... in that I need Soren's story. It's got BATB written all over it!
-Fuck you and your heinous traps, Dermott!
*Balar got a hold of him and the tone changed for that whole chapter.
-Their courtship/physical relationship was the definition of a slow burn!
*And not the boring kind either. No, a slow burn should make you want to take time.
-...I am curious about one smutty moment. And no, I will not elaborate.
-Balar not only accepts her birth mark, but compares Imogen to a goddess because of how they are marked in a similar style 💗.
-Not the manticores gettin' pissed because Imogen compares them to lions 🤣.
*I mean, they are literally fighting over the sun spot in the meadow...

Overall, I loved the cozy fantasy feel of this book. And I'm very picky about cozy fantasy. My one con: I wanted a bigger emotional epilogue for both Neomi and Imogen. But just the image of the manticores finally having a family by extension after that emotional gut punch of a prologue and Balar got the girl, and Imogen got her peace... could it be any less than 4.5? Nope.

Changelings is Volume 1 in a set of novellas set in the Monstrous World Universe by SE Wendel. Volume 1 follows Balar, the oldest of the manticores who have found their home with the Otherly community in the books. Balar is the definition of charismatic. He is the mayor of the Otherly village, looks after his brothers and cousins that live there with him, has compassion for his fellow Otherly residents, brings major golden retriever energy, and just wants to find a mate to spoil. After a night of drinking in a pub, he falls asleep in an area he is unfamiliar with. This is where Balar and the readers meet Imogen, an introverted and reclusive human woman. Imogen stumbles upon a hungover manticore on the side of the road first thing in the morning. Due to Balar being a manticore with an internal “beast”, he knows immediately that Imogen is his mate. The only problem is that Imogen has secluded herself from others and never thought she’d have any sort of romantic relationship. Imogen has a large, red birthmark on half of her face that led to relentless bullying by her peers, including the man her sister later married. Imogen has a cottage in the middle of the woods with her herd of goats, donkey, and pet dog & prefers her seclusion because it is safer. Balar spends DAYS hunting down her cottage to properly introduce himself & from that point on he continues to literally and metaphorically show up for her. Since it was a novella, the story wasn’t as involved as the rest of the Monstrous World books, but it was still very much enjoyable nonetheless. I loved the charisma that Balar brought & the dynamic with his brothers and cousins that develops with Imogen. I always love the cameos of the previous couples in SE Wendel’s books & the pet companions bring such a unique flair to these books. I can’t wait to see more of the manticores in Soren and Maeve’s story next

I loved this book. As a spin‑off from the Monstrous series, it hits all the cozy, slow‑burn, found‑family notes I wanted, and now I’m fully invested in getting stories for the rest of the brothers.

Balar is the town’s beloved mayor ....the kind of man everyone trusts, respects, and genuinely likes. His brothers follow his lead, the community adores him, and everyone knows he’s been searching for his mate for years. One night he has a little too much to drink and ends up passed out in the woods… where Imogene finds him.

Imogene is the town’s prickly hermit. She lives deep in the woods with her goats and her dog, mostly because people were cruel about the port‑wine stain on her face when she was younger. She’s not fragile — she’s just tired of people. And honestly, I loved her immediately.

The moment Balar sees her, he knows she’s his mate. She wants nothing to do with him. And instead of pushing, he just… waits. Shows up. Gives her space. His patience and gentleness are some of the sweetest parts of the book.

What really worked for me is how the story handles Imogene’s birthmark. To her, it shaped her whole life. To Balar, it’s simply part of her — not something to overlook, not something to pity. Watching her slowly realize that the thing she feared people would judge her for isn’t actually this huge flaw? Beautiful.

And the best part: she stays prickly. She doesn’t magically become soft or social. She’s loved exactly as she is.

It’s tender, slow, healing, and worth every page.

This was so so cuteeeeeee! I was so excited to see another edition of the Monstrous World Series and this did not disappoint. And we finally got to see the Manticore brothers; big cat monster men are my weaknesssss. I loved how patient and soft Balar was when he was with Imogen. He was protective and dedicated, willing to give her as much space and time she needed while also proving he was here to stay. I loved that he lead his brothers with a firm hand but also the sweetness of real family. I loved their dynamic so much and I hope to see more of them! Imogen was such a heart wrenching case, with so much hurt inside her because of her mark. Between problems with her sister, the trauma of being bullied and closed off from everyone and just taking care of herself, she was a tough nut to crack.

But when she finally opened up to him, it was so sweet and soft. I loved that they really took it slow between them. From months of domestic sweetness, cooking and baking together to taking it slow in the bedroom to make sure Imogen was comfortable, it was so so cute. Seeing Imogen’s confidence grow and Balar just become even more devoted was great. I really enjoyed them and I hope we see more manticore brothers in the future!

How does one describe yet another absolutely fantastic story by SE Wendel when her writing is the stuff of your dreams? When her prose leaves you aching in your heart and feeling swept up in her characters and their plight?

This story is absolutely lush and breathtaking love, the kind you scour books for until you find it and can’t let it go. I’m so serious.

Balar and Imogen have a masterful dynamic, he’s headstrong and brash, she’s more timid and guarded. He’s learning to be worthy of her, she’s finding herself. He’s got FUR AND WHISKERS AND DEVOTION AND MUSCLES.

DO I NEED TO SAY MORE.

okay I LOVED this. I loved Balar and Imogen so much. They were so sweet and I loved that they took their time and it actually felt like they fell in love. Imogen had a lot of self love to work on and Balar was in her corner the minute he met her.

this should have been a 4/5 star read for me easy, as all S.E. Wendel books have been. However there was one aspect that I just.... cannot get over. It's not even *that* pertinent to the overall plot, but like.........

I would NEVER have forgiven my sister for marrying my tormentor/bully. Ever. I wouldn't even be in her life. I don't know what Neomi was thinking, or what even the point of it was. Especially since Collin gave no REAL proof that he changed, nor did he ever apologize. Imogen was honestly a real sweetheart for even dealing with it in any capacity. I do appreciate Neomi calling out Imogen for being in her own bubble, and not noticing her struggles, but I can't help but ask like... why would she? You married her bully. She grts constantly reminded everytime she is at her CHILDHOOD home.

I feel like maybe a another and bigger heart-to-heart could have fixed this?

From sun-bathing, happy go lucky Balar to prickly pear, secluded Imogen, I absolutely LOVED every moment of their love story! I'm always a sucker for a grumpy sunshine trope, especially when the sunshine character reeeeally has to work for it. Balar was such a patient and loveable character! I also really liked Imogen! While her birthmark held her back from a lot, Balar saw past it to the beautiful person within. I loved how his love and steadfast presence helped Imogen gain reassurance and confidence, slowly but surely. I really adored how they were just a ying and yang dynamic. Their personalities couldn't be more different, but in the end they compliment each other so well!

Beyond Balar and Imogen, I really enjoyed the side characters in this story! To say that I'm eager for all of the Pride to find their own love match is a total understatement! I loved how different their personalities were and how they were just overgrown cats chasing sunspots through Imogen's meadow!😆 Maybe I'm off the mark here, but I'm kindof rooting for Naomi (Imogen's sister) to end up with a manticore of her own.🤭

Overall, this was such a fun and cozy read!

I loved this one! I’ve enjoyed all the books in the Monstrous World Series, & Changelings 1 is no exception. This addition is a lower stakes, cozy novella featuring Balar & Imogen. And I adore these two!

Balar is the manticore mayor of the town where the supernatural beings of the land reside. He’s definitely the golden retriever / sunshine of this duo. Imogen is his (very) reluctant fated mate. (She’s the black cat / grump.) Imogen is definitely not sure what to make of Balar - especially after his less than stellar first impression.

There’s a lot to love here: from the banter between our leads to the softer moments. Balar’s unwavering faith that he and Imogen are meant to be. Imogen’s secret soft side. The two slowly falling for each other. All in all, I just love it when there’s the trope of he falls first & harder but she isn’t sure what to do with him.

If you want a shorter cozy fantasy with some romance, add this to your tbr! Also many thanks to S. E. Wendel for the eARC!

Favorite Quote:

“Now, I unfortunately only have the morning to give you, so tell me all about what you’ve done and how much you’ve missed me.”

“That won’t take long.”

“Very well, then I will tell you all about mine, and I did miss you very much, so it might take all morning.”

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review.

This was a great and quick read. This is best read after Ironling due to some spoilers to Halfling and Ironling. We got glimpses of Ballard and his brethren in Ironing and very excited to learn some more about Balar. The way he met Imogen wasn’t the best first impression, but I enjoyed the wat this man protected her and land on the second time he saw her. I related a lot to Imogen and how she used self isolation to help make her feel safe. It was very adorable to watch Balar offered to take things slow with Imogen because he understood that the thought of being a life mate can be very overwhelming to take in for a human when they don’t feel the bond themselves and it helped Imogen to warm up to the idea. We got to see our favorite raccoon, Darrah and meet Shadow and Chestnut. I love the animal side characters and are always my favorite to meet!

I highly recommend reading this and the entire Monstrous World series!

Love this world and Author

Wendel has a gift for giving the reader a sweet ride of feels. I always find myself truly empathizing on a deep level with her characters. This extension of the Monstrous world is lovely. I’m a little confused why they’re separate from the main series, perhaps because it’s shorter, less in depth in terms of tying into the greater overarching plot, but that’s not a negative, more of me just wondering.

S.E. Wendel is simply an amazing storyteller, consistently executes incredible writing, and masterfully takes the reader on an emotional voyage with a sweet ending that leaves the reader walking away with higher dopamine levels due to high cuteness (and steam 😉).
I cannot forget to mention, M/F, open door romance that contributes to the development of the characters and story, not simply unfounded sexual escapades.

Highly recommend this book, all related books in the Monstrous World and any books by S.E. Wendel, you will not be disappointed.

I absolutely love this world Wendel has created and I am so excited to get more stories from this place.
This one followed Balar, he is a manticore and he and his brothers came to the human city Dundúran for the promise of safety and in search for a mate. But after two years he still hasn't run into his one. Imogen is a woman alone and she likes it that way. Burdened with a large red birthmark upon her face, she’s kept herself apart from others. She lives with her dog and farm animals deep into the forest. One morning she finds a sleeping manticore on the road, so things for her start to change. When she used to be alone she is now courted by Balar and his brothers help around the house. Balar hasn't come this far just to give up at the first sign of trouble. Can Imogen keep her distance or will she fall for Balar.
I really loved this story so much. Balar is such a cutie and wants everything to be perfect for his mate but their first meeting is everything but so he has so making up to do. Imogen has kept to herself for so long she needs a push from people to change her view on life and of herself. Seeing Balar be so understanding of Imogen was so cute. He wants her to be happy. I also loved all the banter between the brothers, especially the youngest manticore.
So if you are looking for a cute fated mate, manticore X human romance this is one for you!
Thanks to S.E. Wendel for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Man, it felt good to be back in the Monstrous World series. I absolutely adore all of our characters that we meet, and Balar & Imogen were not any different.

Imogen is a standoff-ish 'I live in a cottage in the woods away from anyone else' kind of girl. Balar is a fun, lively, flirty manticore who is on the hunt for his kigara (mate).

When Balar hilariously meets Imogen and realizes who she is to him, his courting ensues. But- will she have any part of it?

This story was so cute. I cannot wait for Vol 2, to meet more character that I'll surely fall in love with.

If yall love cozy reads with swoony men and fiesty women who hold their own and some slow burn heeeeat, totally dive into Sarahs backlog. Her stories never disappoint.

Now I knew I was going to like Changelings because I'm already a fan of the series but I didn't realize I'd LOVE it. It's technically a novella (esp compared to the series longer novels, it's less than 300 pages), but there's still so much included.

Our FMC has a port wine stain on a good portion of her face that's caused her insecurities and she's chosen to lead the life of a hermit in the middle of the woods to escape the judgement of others. This story hits kinda close for me bc my dad has a port wine stain over his eye that he was made fun of for as a kid.

This story however is a beautiful tale of seeing past someone's perceived flaws and never giving up on love.

There's no way you're gonna read this and not be moved. Unless you're a soulless asshole. Which you might be, who's to judge.

I loved being back in this world and it was so much fun to have a shorter (I love the big boys SE Wendel writes, but it was nice to have a much shorter one!) novella to get to see more of Balar, his brothers and the otherly. These giant manticore ( more like cats) had me giggling so much! Balar was such a cinnamon roll and did so many cute little things. The dynamic with him and his brothers was so much fun and how they supported each other and Imogen was so beautiful to see. Seeing Imogen slowly take to them and grow to realize that she is worthy and beautiful was fantastic! This one was delightful and although short I didn’t feel disappointed, Wendel did such a great job developing the romance and characters as well as giving us more of the world!

“Indeed. We shall rectify that then, with the courting.” Straightening, he regained his beaming smile, the one that showed off the full length of his fangs. “Put me to work, kigara. Let me prove what a man I can be to you.”

He wants to prove his worth and love by helping around the cottage, absolutely yes!

Everything about this novella is a yes! The banter, yes! Her snort laughter, yes! His nobleness to win her heart, yes! The wings, oh yes! The swoony flirting, yes!

Flushing, she said, “Yes, but I don’t have a pretty pelt.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that…”

This is exactly the book I needed this week. What she hides away, he finds beautiful. This book is so heartwarming and full of fluffy feel good moments.

This is the sweetest romantasy!

It follows Balar, a manticore, and Imogen, a human woman. Balar is such a sweet and affable male. He has been waiting for his mate for years and when she finally stumbles upon him, it is a hilarious meet-disaster. Balar is nothing but devoted to his new mate and he is determined to win her over.

Imogen isolates herself from others due to a large birthmark on her face. She has thick walls around her emotions and Balar slowly chips away at them with his charm.

• mates
• manticore x human
• reverse grumpy/sunshine
• cozy village setting
• novella & low angst

If you’re looking for a sweet romantasy, read this book! It is a perfect mix of fantasy and slow burn romance that still brings the spice.

I won’t lie I’ve been reading a lot of books just to hit my reading goal since it’s the end of the year. I’d forgotten who this author was until I saw the words halfling, sweetling, and ironling and was delighted because everything I’ve read by her I’ve loved. This was a pleasant surprise after a fucking SLEW of mediocre or shitty reads. I don’t think the author deliberately wrote the fmc as autistic but as someone on the spectrum I couldn’t help but see it there. And then seeing Balar’s wholehearted acceptance? Made me think of the speech Burke made in greys anatomy with the AND and not a but (iykyk). Didn’t think a cozy and comfort read would make me feel and cry so much but it did. Honestly this might be my fave from this author.

This was such a sweet novella in a world I love so much! Balar and Imogen's story was the perfect low-stakes, cosy story. I love a himbo who is down bad from the very beginning as he tries to win over his more reticent mate. Balar was the most perfect himbo manticore and I just wanted to give Imogen a big hug. I loved their sunshine/grumpy dynamic and the way they gave each other the space needed to grow together. And of course the book had cute animal friends! It is an SE Wendel Monstrous World novella! I really had a fun time with the animals' personalities, and laughed out loud at some of the cat/Manticore jokes. This is a perfect, cosy, low-angst read!

“I’m beginning to worry you may not be as pleased to see me as I am you.”

the dedication at the beginning says "To everyone who dreams of a quiet little cottage in the woods. And for a sweet, hunky hero to find them there." and honestly I feel like that really sums it up. who hasn't gotten fed up with the world, and the cruelty of humans and thought to themselves "I'm gonna go live in the woods and become a swamp witch." ?
that's me like, once a week at least.
she's strong and independent and doesn't need a man, and this book isn't about proving her wrong, but more to say that even the strongest amongst us need help sometimes, and for all those other times, it can be nice to have help when you ask.
as always, there was great care taken in this book for moments of trauma responses, and the MMC, while a little overzealous, has such a kind heart and puts forth a lot of effort to make sure she's okay and comfortable.
I love them both.

minor spoilers,
I hope her sister leaves that man tho.

Back to the Monstrous World I go; I adore this series.

Changeling is a two-part book consisting of two novellas. This time we got Manticores, lots of em!
This first novella is Balar and Imogen’s story, and I absolutely adored it.
Balar is a big cinnamon roll: sweet, charming, and loyal. He can be a bit forward for Imogen’s liking, but once she gets to know this sweet oversized winged kitty, he melts her heart. I mean, he melted mine. I think Balar might be a new fave MMC after Hakon (Hakon is still my number one).

This novella is sweet, cozy, a bit spicy and filled with all those swoony S.E Wendel moments. The next installment cannot come fast enough.

Thank you, S. E. Wendel, for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
