Urilqii

Arrival

Rate this book

Life for Liam Sinclair used to be easy. Raves, work, sleep. Lather, rinse, repeat. Yet all of that changed with the arrival of the Urilqii...space aliens, technically, although they looked like everybody else. But if that wasn't freaky enough, they arrived on Earth to thwart a global usurpation by beings they called The Targolt. Climate change, long-denied, was proof of the invasion.

Although at first Liam was as skeptical as everyone else, he couldn't deny one fantastic truth--those space-faring alien dudes were hot, Hot, HOT! Still, despite their smiles and affable natures, despite the continual coverage of their actions by the media, the aliens have been strangely close-mouthed, even after many months on Earth. And Liam, like most humans, can't help but wonder--what are they hiding?

He is about to find out.

First Sergeant Mike, a member of the Urilqii race, lost his love in the last battle with The Targolt and lives with the pain and guilt of surviving while his adored partner did not. But with Liam's sudden arrival into his life and into his heart, will Mike be able to accept or even admit his growing feelings for the handsome human?

This is an amazing book that swept me up in its world on page one and didn’t let me go until it ended. I knew from the blurb I was interested, since it’s got aliens arriving on Earth, another space enemy about to kill all humans so they can have the planet for themselves, an extremely hot alien falling for a human but being held back by having lost a lover before… the list goes on. And with Michelle Robbins, who is a new author to me, weaving all of these elements into an action-packed novel that contains drama and a hot romance on top of some wonderful cross-cultural insights and fascinating interspecies issues, I was totally hooked.

Liam happily drifts through life, like many other humans, until the day the space aliens land. These ones are not out for conquest, but are trying to help humankind defend Earth against a common enemy. At first Liam doesn’t really care one way or the other, but as he learns more about the enemy and how they camouflage their invasion by using climate change until planets are what they need to survive, Liam gets worried. And then he encounters one of the “hot alien dudes”, the one called Mike, they exchange a kiss, and Liam’s life changes forever. He is suddenly determined to find out more about Mike and so does everything he can to get close to him again.

Mike, who isn’t really called Mike but no human can apparently pronounce his Urilqii name, has a leadership position amongst the Urilqii forces sent to Earth to help the woefully underdeveloped human species fight back the evil Targolt. Mike lost his bonded partner to the Targolt, and he is more than reluctant to accept that the one “friendly” kiss he exchanged with Liam has apparently set in motion some events that will change human and Urilqii culture forever. In fact, he fights the growing attraction hard enough to put both their lives in danger.

Liam and Mike’s story is fascinating, and the clash between human habits and ways of communicating, ways of seeing reality, is significant. Both Liam and Mike have to learn how to relate without inadvertently hurting each other in the process. Their struggles are believable, the world building superb, and I can’t wait to find out more about them and the rest of the Urilqii.

If you like science fiction that is truly “out there” yet presented in a very believable and realistic way, if you enjoy stories about men who come from different species and have to relearn the basic if they want to make their relationship work, and if you’re looking for an intense read that won’t let you go once you started, then you will probably enjoy this novel as much as I did.

Author "Michelle Robbins" had a good idea with her new story and Liam's dry humour is pulling.

What I did not like is romance between Liam & Mike. Start was great but the culture difference and Mike's avoidance is very negative aspect.

So, all in all it was fun read but it could be better.

I'm disappointed, sure the main idea for this storyline and actually even the way it started, was pulling, but as soon as Liam got to alien compound everything fell apart for me. We didn't get to know anything about Liam, did he have a family, a job, something other then this mad attraction toward Sergeant Mike. And the way this story ends, it's incomplete and boring. Is like "yay they had sex, bounded and then it ends, BORING!!!
REALLY DISAPPOINTING!

This was an ok story.
Unfortunately not that memorable.
I also would like to know what will happen to Earth. Will they be able to fight back the invasion?
