Please note this is completely revised edition of “The Lavender Lady Casefile” published under Faith Martin’s pen name Jessie Daniels.
Effie James, recently widowed, is asked by her friend Duncan to help his with his latest book. He wants her to join a group of paranormal investigators and be his ears and eyes. The leader of the group, Colin Fielding, will be co-authoring a new book on the psychology of ghost watching.
Meeting the group, she's very comfortable and their first assignment will be investigating the home of an elderly lady who has recently died.
Effie isn't a true believer ... but why does the scent of lavender seem to follow her around? Is the ghost trying to tell her something? Is she unhappy having strangers in her home? Or is she trying to communicate a deadly secret?
This is a cozy, psychic mystery, featuring a very likeable Effie James, but my favorite is the deceased's neighbor ...always bubbly, always gossipy. I thought there might have been a romance in the making, but alas, it was not to be. There was no excitement that kept me riveted to the pages, but the ending was satisfactory. This was an OK read for me.

A good murder mystery with the investigation of a cold case.
It started with a group of Ghostbusters who wanted to check our the house which was being haunted until the main character realized that there was actually a murder buried within.
My second book by author Faith Martin, I loved the whodunit with a hint of supernatural. The characters were varied and interesting. The plot well detailed with old fashioned atmosphere to the story.
Then came my niggles, it was too descriptive for me to really get the thrill of the story, so the characters too lost their steam. I hopped, skipped and jumped through the book to reach the surprise reveal of the murderer.
An okay read.

Review
Normally I thoroughly enjoy reading the books by Faith Martin, but this one I had a hard time with. To be honest it was boring, only in the last chapter was there anything really happening, plus the fact it ended very abruptly.

I found this book very hard going, only finished it because I hate to give up on a book. I found the central caracter very wishy washy and wanted to give her a good shake. The only action was in the last couple of chapters. Very disappointing

This was a mistake - on my part. When I find an author or series I like I'm rarely disappointed as I read my way through their books and I do like Faith Martin's books. The mistake I made was that having seen her name I didn't check out which of her regular heroines or heroes it featured and so read the first few chapters wondering when something was going to happen to warrant the intervention of Hilary, Loveday or Monica. I was a bit distracted from what was going on until I realised they weren't going to arrive.
Effie is a 40 year old widow coming to terms with having the freedom to do what ever she wants without worrying about what her husband thinks. She seems to have had a reasonably happy marriage but had given in to her husband's preferences on many things. Her good friend Duncan, a psychology professor, invites her out for lunch and her expectation that there is an ulterior motive is justified. He and his wife feel it's time she did something to get out of her rut and he has a great idea for what she should do. She should help him with his next book. Duncan is researching the paranormal and asks Effie to join a group who are looking for evidence of ghosts.

This was an enjoyable mystery where a ghost hunting team explore possibilities as a result of a recent death.
The characters suited the plot and it was engaging throughout.

Effie James has recently been widowed and is very aware that friends are trying to keep her time fully occupied. She is not unduly surprised then when old friend Professor Duncan Fergusson, an Oxford psychology don, takes her for lunch and asks her for help researching his latest book. It will involve her joining a group of amateur paranormal investigators led by the charming ghost hunter and author Corwin Fielding, and providing an impartial view on the proceedings. Effie has no strong feelings either way and so is readily accepted by the group members, a mixed bunch including a builder, a retired teacher and a student. They are about to embark on a new investigation, that of Lady Isabel Cadmund whose elderly mother Claudia Watkins has recently died. Whilst clearing the house, Isabel has had a strong feeling that her mother is trying to tell her something, accompanied by the scent of lavender, her mother's favourite perfume. The team, including Effie, having checked out the house and story, duly arrive one evening with all manner of recording equipment and camp out in various rooms for the night. With little findings except a few cold spots they arrange to come back but Effie is nosy and makes a return visit to the village in the daytime. She discovers more about Claudia who by all accounts was a strong willed lady and not adverse to putting a few backs up. Gradually it dawns on Effie that maybe Claudia's death was not from natural causes. Could the old lady's ghost be trying to tell them all something? The characters are all well fleshed out and the scene very well set, but this story seemed to move rather more slowly than others by this author. Faith Martin's stories are known for their gentleness and whodunit type of plot, but for me there wasn't enough build up in suspense with most of the "action" coming in a bit of a rush at the end. Well written and sure to be a hit with many fans but I would have liked more mystery and more spookiness! 3.5*

Not our usual mystery from this author. It has a recent widow joining a paranormal team who are ghosts investigators. She does this as a favor for friend who is a writer. She is to report back to him with the findings of the group and he hopes to be able to use her input in his newest book.
It is quirky, interesting and riveting all in the same instance. It starts off with the team being asked by the daughter of a deceased mother to investigate odd occurrences in her mother’s bedroom. It seems when she enters this bedroom, the scent of lavender, her mother’s favorite fragrance, can sometimes be smelled even though there is no reason for the scent of this fragrance as it is warm and house windows are open for ventilation. Also, when she is in the bathroom, she becomes very cold; again without apparent reason.
There are many unusual signs as the ream of paranormal investigators schedule several work sessions using infrared cameras, thermometers, voice activated equipment, and personal observation to document these odd occurrences.
Join along with this team as they observe, document, question, and check out their findings. Why is all of this happening? Why only the one cold spot and always in the same place? Why belligerence and scoffing from several of the deceased’s family members? What really happened and why?
Reading this unusual mystery will provide all your answers. I like the premise of this story, but yet the leader of the team while urbane, smart, good looking and a good investigator does need a bit of polish in writing his journal entries. Why did he hire Effie if all he does is question her abilities, her being a recent widow and how accurately she will relay information to Duncan, the man writing the book and how he will use this information. Corwin has been given the right to read anything the author uses and can have a voice in its presentation.
I would like to see more books in a series by the author as this is a fun read and the book ends with the hint of another case.

June 10, 2021If you want to read a spooky mystery this book is NOT for you! Notice I didn't leave a rating; that is because I couldn't figure out how to leave a negative one. Why? Because as for the "spooky" or "ghost" the book mentions a cold spot and smelling some lavender once or twice. That's it for the spooky ghostly part. As for the "mystery" part; well, it's all about the main character who's mind wanders constantly about everything but the story line, she whines about everything, can never make up her mind about what to wear, should she go out or stay home, does her hair look good and why she worries about all this type of stuff. Turns out her late husband put her down all the time so now that he is gone she has no self esteem. Then, in the next to last chapter, she has a sleepless night and begins to play a "what if" game: what if the grass were purple, what if she changed her name back to her maiden name, what if the lady who died and supposedly came back as a ghost was murdered? And BAMB! We get to the mystery part. She decides in the middle of the night to investigate exactly how the lady died, stirs up trouble and in the last chapter is threatened by the killer, who just happened on to her and her theories. Of course, while they are talking he admits everything, because hey, why not? But of course she happens to have a voice activated recorder in her pocket, just in case the ghost, who never makes an appearance in ANY way, talks to her, so she gets it all on tape. And then she goes to the police the next day. All's well that ends well... So, no ghost and only a mystery in the last two chapters. Life is too short to spend it reading books this bad. I'm throwing this one away. 'Nuf said!!

This is the first Faith Martin book I've read, so cannot compare her style to her other books, be they by this pen name or her others. ( Yes, she's a prolific author, and has also written under the names of Maxine Barry & Joyce Cato.)
I've read a few of the reviews in Goodreads and based on my rating I'm in line with many others . . . and cannot understand why some out there gave it a low, low rating. It must be because they are used to her style in some of her other books. I did not find this a slow go or tedious, in fact it moved right along. I did, however, find the main character, Effie James, to have an up and down personality. One minute she is extremely self-deprecating and the next full of confidence.
Effie James, whose husband, Michael, passed away a year ago, is just beginning to come out from under Michael's control. For example, he only wanted her to wear dark trouser suits and seemed to pooh-pooh her thoughts and ideas. So it's good he's no longer in the picture.
Effie gets roped into joining a ghost-hunting group and although this novel is supposed to be a standalone, at the end one can see how a series can be developed, which would be good. We would see how Effie develops and if anything develops between her and Corwin, the leader of the ghost-hunting group. She was welcomed into the group from the start, even though they knew she was there as a "spy" to find out what they were all about, from a psychological perspective, as a favor to her friend Duncan.

The Lavender has a very creative and surprising ending; however, to takes a long time (177 pages to be exact) to realize its potential as a scary spooky story. Effie James, a recently widowed woman of 4o, takes her friend's advice and agrees to be an impartial observer of a group of professional ghost hunters. The leader of the group informs her that she should not expect apparitions to jump out in front of her or scare her. Instead they record document paranormal experiences by sound recordings, visual mists, or abnormal odors. The group has been hired by a woman whose mother has recently passed and who now feels her spirit is trying to contact her. She has felt cold spots in her bathroom and smelled lavender, one of her mother's favorite scents. I honestly didn't want to finish it because it felt as if I slugging my way through molasses. The transition from their preparations to solve the mystery and to the climax was so abrupt that I was sure that I missed a chapter. My friend who recommended it to me urged me to read the last 50 pages, which I would have done anyway because I always feel compelled to finish. Had I not finished it I probably given it a 1 or 2 rating, but the cleverness of the outcome of the ghost hunt was both exciting and interesting so I rated it a 3 which implies I liked it. The ending yes; the first 177 pages not exactly.

Recently widowed Effie is asked by her ex professor if she would do an independent review of some ghost hunters cases for his upcoming book. Although she isn't initially too keen, when their next case happens quickly after she agrees, Effie gets caught up in the world of the supernatural but still is able to maintain a cool head - an advantage for her. She is asked along with the team to check out a house where an old woman has recently died suddenly. The daughter feels a cold spot in the bathroom plus a strong smell of lavender there too. After the team's first night of observation, they concur that there is a temperature difference plus they could all smell the lavender too. Supernatural or is there a valid explanation? Whilst other family members condone the team's work -mainly due to them wanting the house sold off - Effie sets about trying to get answers for the old woman's daughter.

A brilliant spooky mystery
When I heard Faith Martin had written a one off spooky mystery I had to get it, as she is one of my favourite authors.
Was I disappointed?
No I wasn't.
Effie is asked by her psychoanalyst friend Duncan if she will join a group of paranormal investigators for a book he is writing. He wants Effie to be an outsider with no knowledge or interest in the paranormal. But what Effie doesn't realise is that her life is about to change forever.
Faith Martin has written another brilliant book. It is easy to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
If you enjoy reading mystery novels and want to add a dash of spookiness to the mix, then The Lavender Lady is the book for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. A completely different storyline to the normal mysteries.
The main character is a recently widowed lady. Her friend of long standing, a phycologist, wants her to take part in a paranormal event. Ghost hunters.
I was a bit sceptical at first but as the storyline unfolded I was totally immersed in her journey. She has a lot of baggage from her marriage and is finding herself during this story. However it fits in well with the story and doesn't jar or overcome the mystery.
I don't like spoilers so will not give out the storyline. Just say be prepared for an emerging mystery solver. I would love to continue the journey with her.

A Heart Stopping Scent of Murder
I bought this book as a recreational read; and it is. It's a good little mystery. The plot is around Ghostbusters, the newbie being the one who works out that a murder has occurred. It's a clean book - no sex, no overt violence, no winking and nudging in between the lines. It's a leisurely read suitable for a rainy day or stop and go reading if you use public transport. I enjoyed it and hope Faith Martin is inspired to write another stand alone book like this one.

An Unexpected Suspence Story
Faith Martin is so very good at creating dimensional characters and her range is truly amazing! Effie is shy, unsure of herself and tries so hard to not embarrass herself, so unlike her other heroines who have self-confidence in abundance. The other characters are each well-defined, reminding me of similar types of people one has met.
Lavender Lady is hard to put down as it zigzags forward to its unexpected conclusion at a good pace. I am hoping this is one of more books with Effie, but if not, it's well worth enjoying as a stand alone mystery.

Bravo Effie James
Well, I enjoyed this interesting story of a grieving widow and a possible haunting in a small town outside of Oxford. Effie is an interesting character and I enjoyed the slow revelation of her relationship with her deceased husband. Watching her fledgling evolution, helped by a group of dedicated paranormal enthusiasts was fun. I hope I get to meet them in another book.

As always, I loved the characters and story. The paranormal element is written from a more realistic perspective. It is how I would imagine a real paranormal investigation to be conducted.
My one complaint is why isn't this a series? The characters are great and scream for another mystery to solve. Do Effie and Corwin ever realise and do something about their attraction? So much to explore and the ghost side makes for great reading. More please!

Recently widowed Effie James has joined the C-Fits to help her friend get information for his next book. She is not real sure she wants to be hunting ghosts but is willing to give it a try. As she works with the group she is not so sure the lady they are looking into died a natural death. Maybe she is better at discovering her death? As time goes by Effie really seems to fit in with the group. Do they find a ghost? Time will tell.

The book is a bit slow moving so it took me longer to read than it should have as, honestly, I kept getting sidetracked. Things really picked up towards the end which definitely improved my spirits. The clues were definitely left here for the reader to determine the who, what, and why so I felt quite proud of myself that I had figured it out quite a bit before the denouement. The book is a standalone but I’m left wondering what else might have happened with Effie and her new friends.

Maybe ghosts do tell
Even though originally written some years ago as a one off under a pen name this is well up to Martin's regular series in plot, twists, and characters. One hopes that there can be more featuring the characters as the whole concept of ghost story with a "reason" does fit whole concept for why ghosts (if they exist) "walk". May they do want to " tell" and get their story across. Bravo for a double genre tale. 😶

May they do want to " tell" and get their story across. Bravo for a double genre tale. 😶

Very Unusual!
Entertaining and different from other Faith Martin series. It could be the start of a new series. Effie, recently widowed, joins a group that investigates paranormal activity. Group participants are enjoyable and skills complement each other. Definitely a cozy mystery.

Well to be honest I am not sure about this book, I love all Faith Martins other characters in her other books so was expecting a bit more than I got (I think). I found it really slow to get into this and was probably about half way through it.
Whilst the characters and the backgrounds were woven in the authors normal writing in style I found it slightly long winded.
Having said that the new character is an emerging butterfly from a cocoon of a dead control freak husband. That in itself makes the book worth reading and I do confess to not getting the culprit until almost the end.

Faith Martin Fan
Faith doesn't disappoint with this new cast of characters. I am hoping this is the beginning of a new series. Surely she wouldn't leave us dangling in suspense over Effie and Corwin?! I really enjoyed getting to know all the members of the ghost hunting group and hope to read about them again.

Should this be a one off?
As I like Faith Martin I thought I'd give this title a read. For me the characters were more engaging than those solved by the vicars' wife. The plot a little more credible than some and the story flowed nicely with the right amount of tension. I can see Effie making a comeback, which would be most welcome.

Not really spooky, but a great story
I'm just going to admit it, I really enjoy Faith Martin's books. This one is off the beaten path, but is surprisingly good. I'd actually like to see some others of the "c-fit" crowd, it was a fun read, and you can see glimmers of Hilary in the actions of Effie, well worth it.
