The Big Bad Wolf is about to find Little Red Riding Hood... in the corner office.
“My scorching, anonymous one-night stand from the Halloween party? Yeah, my new VP. Now she wants to pretend it never happened. Adorable.” — Josephine ‘Jo’ Blake, Business Analyst & Professional Boundary-Crosser
“The decision to promote her was made before the party. The fact that she's also the 'Dark Wolf' who had me begging on Saturday night is a catastrophic, unprofessional, and completely irrelevant coincidence.” — Alexandra ‘Alex’ Morgan, VP of Operations & Definitely Not Spiraling
Alex tries to lock down their connection in an HR-policy-shaped box. But Jo has other plans. She’s seen the passionate woman beneath the power suit, and she's not letting go. What begins as a relentless pursuit of coded emails and inside jokes becomes an exploration of power, control, and forbidden desires that could destroy everything they've built.
Chasing Red is a sizzling sapphic workplace romance that proves the only thing more dangerous than mixing business with pleasure is trying not to. Features competence kink, praise dynamics, and steamy encounters. Guaranteed HEA. Contains mature themes.
the writing in this was good, but there were minor inconsistencies that i just couldn’t help notice. for example, they go to a work party that has an open bar, yet a pushy male character mentions paying for drinks. another example is that alex has a book on her kindle about an heiress and her assistant she’s excited to read about, which is a pretty similar concept to the actual plot of this book. it kind of felt like the 4th wall was broken a few times within the first 20%, BUT all of this can easily be fixed with an editor! i really did enjoy the romance, the characters, and i had so much fun with the plot!
I didn’t like this too much. I felt it had potential to be fun and entertaining but it fell short. I didn’t like the over use of the nicknames and I felt Jo was harassing Alex after their encounter. It wasn’t right. Jo behaved like those other men in the workplace and could have benefited from those harassment trainings they were all against. I wish the story developed differently. Not for me.
An excellent sapphic workplace romance involving a sexy and spicy Halloween party and a number of exceptionally written scenes. It's clear Ms. Marren has a background in the kind of work her characters do, but it's presented in a way that doesn't detract or take away from the story. And the spice level is extraordinarily off the charts in the best of ways. Definitely worth a read.
This book is sweet, spice no 3rd act breakup and has a Happy makes you smile ending. It does have some long winded office stuff but still so worth the read.
Pretty disappointed with this story, especially since it has a really good rating.
It’s a 245 page book but nothing really happens except for in the beginning at the company Halloween party. Which, was the best part about the book and the only time I felt like the characters connected.
This feels like a short story or a summary for a book instead of it actually being one. There were so many instances of things being repeated-a character saying something, and then the next main character repeating that as an internal monologue and vice versa.
It also felt weird to continuously say “come undone” or “fall apart” so much. But I particularly dislike when authors use those phrases. There are so many ways to say: come, climax, orgasm, etc.
At one point, when it comes to the “kink” factor in this story, Jo actually felt a bit out of line imo. But I blame that on the author because the characters never had a conversation about it to build understanding and trust of the dominant kink. At the party it worked. They were disguised and playing a part but at the office, Alex set clear boundaries that Jo over stepped. Again, bc the author never gave them the opportunity to grow and establish a power play. It was just assumed both women were into it when neither discussed sub/dom tendencies.
Idk this definitely fell flat for me, unfortunately.
I really enjoyed the flip-flop of dominance between the main characters — it kept the story dynamic and interesting. The plot itself was pretty good and held my attention, but I would’ve liked to see more character development. I wanted to understand more about why the characters are the way they are, their backstories to help explain their motivations. I also felt the relationship could’ve used more development, especially around the obstacles they faced before it became official. That extra buildup would’ve made their connection feel more real. Overall, still a good read will like to see future books.
I went into this book having no idea what my expectations should be and I absolutely loved everything about it. As someone who works in corporate America - the nods to standard mediocre incompetence had me rolling quite frequently. The first three chapters were enough to pull me in with quick texts to my other corporate friends, "you HAVE to read this book!"
This book was equal parts steamy/sultry and meaningful/profound. I loved that at the heart of this story were two women looking to prove themselves in a male-dominated industry for all the right reasons, and coming out on top. I quite literally inhaled this book, and I only read my sapphic novels on my Peloton, so saying I pedaled quickly is an understatement.
The only thing I would have changed about this book, would be for it to be longer. While it was perfect length and the brief epilogue tied up all the loose ends, I'm a sucker for domestic bliss and would have loved more insight into their relationship after the Cognitex meeting, but that's just me being selfish.
Moral of the story, as someone familiar to this world, it checked all of the boxes while maintaining professional, realistic and still nailing the Happily Ever After. I was rooting for these two from the very beginning and I'm so happy I took a chance on this book. Should the author ever choose to revive Alex and Jo in another book (or novella) - I would be happy to reconnect with these two!
This was an enjoyable short novel with the foundation of a strong story. While I felt there was room for more character development, the core ideas were compelling and showed a lot of promise. I would have loved a bit more insight into the characters’ backstories and lives, the kinds of details and idiosyncrasies that really help characters come alive on the page.
The continued Little Red Riding Hood and Big Bad Wolf thing, didn’t quite work for me personally, though that’s more a matter of individual taste than a reflection of the writing itself. Overall, I enjoyed the read and would be interested in picking up another book from this author.
Great book. Good character discriptions. You really understand them. This book kept my interest from first to last page. I look Forward to reading more from this author.
I’m normally not a big fan of first person writing but the way this author did it was absolutely fabulous. After reading the synopsis I had a notion in my head of how the book would start and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was different. The spicy scenes were done wonderfully. I also really enjoyed the story with the split views throughout. Amazing job. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
I’ve read a lot of debut novels, and I must say that this is probably up there as one of the best ones yes. Quick paced, good grammar and a great balance between spice and story The timeline of everything did feel a bit rushed but if anything that’s mainly because I wanted to read more and learn more about them
The concept of using little red and bad wolf was done impressively well,
Overall great debut novel, looking forward to reading your next one already
Duel 1st Person POV. 4.5🌟 2🌶️. 245 pages Now if you know me, you know that despite not being a fan of contemporary romance, I fucking love an Ice Queen and a workplace romance. Chasing Red however does the ice queen trope differently, with the fact she’s only an ice queen to men (still loved it). This was a fun little steamy read, not as spicy as I was expecting but still good.
Jo and Alex are both enjoyable characters and their story is enjoyable to read. Their story starts off with an anonymous hook up at the office Halloween party and spirals on from there.
If you are looking for something quick and steamy, give Chasing Red a read!
Must Read if you Love: ✨Sapphic Romance ✨Contemporary Romance ✨Workplace Romance ✨Forbidden Romance ✨Boss + Employee ✨Anonymous Hook Up ✨Ice Queen (but only to men) ✨Steamy
Honestly great book! I finished it in one day, it’s sweet but spicy and doesn’t follow the usual 3rd act breakup. The story line and the way the characters interact with each other on day to day things is so sweet and caring. The way they do little check ins and just do little things to support and take care of each other is heartwarming. I love the spice between them and how this book has a good balance between both. It’s the perfect book if you want to follow a happy relationship grow while also getting the spicy scenes as well.
This is a fantastic debut novel, the characters were very likable, the story moved at a great pace, I throughly enjoyed it. Can’t wait for more from this author. My only, not complaint but comment, about the character Jo, definitely gave masc or maybe soft butch energy, but I think was fem? Not really sure but it threw me every time it mentioned her in a skirt or something girly because definitely masc energy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, what a debut! Loved the chemistry between the characters and the premise in general. It was a great quick read with plenty of spice and I was hooked from the start. The only thing I could really say is, I’d love more backstory to the MC’s and even their friends etc in future, however I don’t feel it detracted from this story at all. Well done and look forward to reading more books by this author!
Wow. What more is there to say? I adored the characters and loved the writing style. I could not stop smiling throughout this read! I cannot wait to read more from this author. Spice level was perfect. Not too much and well written. Makes me feel like I need a corporate job where I can lust after a woman in a power suit. Thank you for the enjoyable read.
unfortunately this book was not my cup of tea at all. the characters felt very flat and i couldn’t connect with them at all. everything happened so fast (even for lesbians) and the story was 95% smut with 5% corporate bullshit. the whole little red riding hood analogy kept making think of the scene “i wolf you” and not in a good way.
Oh my gooooddess, this is a modern *masterwork* in sapphic lovestories!! The dichotomy in Alex's mind over her love-life vs work-life dynamics, and the *incredible* highlights (both of her intellectual thrill over the challenges in her work & the emotional roadblocks of that same workplace) for Jo beneath her "fine-for-now as a background lacky" demeanor. And, *not to be understated* -> competency and praise kinks, not overdone, in characters w/ a possessive & possessed relationship? YES
I loved their dynamic, the fact there was no drama and the happy ending we all hoped for. But I wish we got to see more of their relationship, the moving in together and learning each other’s routines and habits.
For a first novel I’d say this was a really good start and can’t wait to read more
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! Alix Marren nailed the banter and witty dialogue. I loved how they met through the Halloween party and how our heroines are dismantling the corporate patriarchy. I truly look forward to reading their next work!
Is the hunt or the catch the goal? Two confident and smart women meet for a one night adventure. But a twist of fate have both women crossing paths daily. Can wit, spice and chemistry lead to HEA? Perfect read for a Friday night.
As a debut novel this was incredible. It’s a feel good read that makes you want. This story was cute, sexy, and felt raw. Alix Marren just gained a loyal reader! I will read anything she writes.
im gonna give it a four stars i loved it so much and had fun watching it. the only thing i didn't like was it being fast paced and we didn't get many explanations about the characters like background and stuff.
2.5/3 ⭐️ Quick read. Didn’t love or hate. Felt like I was reading a summarized book. Things were being repeated a lot. Especially the word competent. Wanted more character development. Overall, still enjoyed.
This was ok. I enjoyed the romance but there were things lacking in this book for me. Felt like Jo pursued no matter what was being said which is unrealistic to me. No means no even if " the connection" is there.
