Lost on Dark Trails

Rate this book
Following her journey in "Off the Beaten Path", Shivah continues her hunt for the vicious raiders who destroyed her village and have since continued their reign of terror across the country. They are joined by the men of her village who turned on their own people, including her husband.

Continuously haunted by a spirit bent on pushing her down a path of vengeance, Shivah has begun to question whether chasing revenge is worth throwing her life away, or if there's a better future ahead of her, and a chance at real peace… the most elusive quarry of all for a woman whose heart is consumed by grief and anger.

Hard-hitting and powerful.
If the first book was a little rough around the edges, this was much better crafted. The descriptions were better, the characters more rounded, and the world more fleshed out. Everything about this book was better than the strong foundations set by the first in the series. Certainly looking forward to reading more.

Brief review: Thoroughly enjoyed this book - it's somewhat more action-focused than the first installment in the trilogy (which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your perspective) but I enjoyed seeing the continued growth and independence of the main character, Shivah, as well as the advancement of the relationship between Puck and Ransom. There are still some grammatical errors in the writing (i.e. mixing up imply and infer) but otherwise the world and characters continue to be engaging and thought-provoking as well. It's an emotional roller-coaster ride for sure (I had to take a brief break from reading when certain events occurred) but definitely a solid 4 star book.

The action in this book began on page 1 and didn’t let up until the final page. All said, I think it’s one of my favorite books in the Red Lantern universe so far! The friendship between Shivah, Puck, and Ransom grew a lot, and there were some really beautiful, emotional conversations between the close friends. This was definitely one of the more emotional books in this series so far. I look forward to seeing how Shivah’s adventure ends, but I’ll also be sad to see her and her friends go.

Indeed interesting sequel to Off the beaten path. The improvement of the characters' feelings towards one another is really well conveyed.

This was a wonderful follow up to the first book and a fantastic sequel in its own right.

After Ransom and Puck are reunited it's time to figure out what to do next. A confession from Puck is surprising but also gives them an opportunity to settle the matter of Rourke and the raiders.

However while Shivah's thirst for revenge is somewhat sated, more questions and problems arise to replace old ones. Old companions become enemies and enemies turn out to perhaps be not as bad as originally thought.

Ransom and Puck are a lot closer and more honest with each other in this book and Shivah grows closer to Grant as well.

As their relationship develops Shivah does open up a bit more about her past to him as well as what her husband did to her. Because of her history she's developed a pretty warped view of love, relationships, and most of all intimacy. In this book Shivah addresses this head on and while this is an understandable part of her character arc those who would rather not have to read through the two sex scenes that result can easily skip over them as I did without fear of missing the rest of the story plot.

Shivah has a nice character arc throughout this book as we see her quest for vengeance get back on track and then see it realized. Unfortunately she comes to realize that vengeance and revenge doesn't bring true happiness or real satisfaction.

This is her story but the other characters she comes across prove just as interesting. The truth behind Rourke and the raiders is a shocking one and will no doubt bring some real life history to mind for many people as the allusions are pretty apparent.

The first book had a nice twist towards the end and this one is no different. The truth behind what's going on was very well done and also gives Shivah and her group a new direction to go in. The final book in the series is coming out this summer I believe and I look forward to reading it and seeing how this saga ends.

Rukis is my favorite author in the furry fandom. The emotions I experienced reading this book hit me like a truck. All the characters are complex and no one is completely good or bad. Can’t wait to read the final chapter!

Ow, ow, my poor characters, they hurt.

I had a few niggles about the writing style in this book, but all in all the story felt engrossing enough that I was willing to overlook them.
