Demon Hunt

Rate this book
Auren longs for adventure and a break from her tedious life on Appolia. It's the start of summer, and she is looking forward to her yearly camping trip with her foster father, Kado. She believes these trips are for fun, but when they arrive on Luten Isle, Kado informs her that she is a shadow stalker, and she is in training.

One morning, Auren decides to take her training into her own hands. She only means to practice seeing the veil to the shadow world, the world of the shadow people and the source of their power. Instead, she opens the veil releasing a demon, a guardian of the shadow world, into the physical world.

With the deadly beast loose, she and Kado don't have long to hunt it down and return it to where it belongs, or many innocent people could die.

This is a book I just got hold of after I have already read the Shadow Stalker series but I really enjoyed reading this short prequel and feel that it really needed to be read as it filled in some good details which needed to be filled in. Maybe it would be best if this is read at the start of the series but in fact it can be read at whatever time one feels like adding it in during the read of the series. I particularly enjoyed seeing a different aspect to the relationship between Auren and Kado, he is still very much the disciplinarian even in this book but he is not so hard on her and when she does something which caused a lot of harm to others around her, he was as hard on himself as he was on her cause he felt he carried the blame. This puts Kado in a different perspective which I had of him and I am glad as I did not like him so much during the rest of the series. Renee wrote one hell of a series, now mine is complete!

I've read the first two books and really enjoyed the prequel. I was reeling from the demon, the intelligence it possessed, and its attack on the island! It was enlightening to read about Auren and Kado's training in self defense and survival skills. I felt like Renee Scattergood expressed Auren as a person of strength and character before her life was upturned. I also look at Kado in a different lighting now that I understand how much he cares for Auren and protected her as she matured. Well done!!

If you like the Shadow Stalker series, you’ll love this. It gives great perspective to the series and insight into Auren’s camping trips. *SPOILER-ish There’s some awesome mind manipulation going on if you were wondering why Auren’s never been told about being a Shadow Stalker before. *SPOILER-end There’s action-packed adventure with demon chasing, mountain climbing and cave exploring. There’s emotional scenes with guilt, anger and pain. And it’s all enclosed into a nice small read. Also if you are curious about Drevin you’ll love the end as there’s some detail on the big bad guy and his evil lair.
