Dr. Charles F. Stanley is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta, founder of In Touch Ministries, and a New York Times best-selling author who has written more than fifty books, and has sold more than nine million copies. He demonstrates a keen awareness of people's needs and provides Christ-centered, biblically-based principles for everyday life.
Charles Frazier Stanley was born September 25, 1932, in the small town of Dry Fork, Virginia. The only child of Charley and Rebecca Stanley, Charles came into the world during a time when the entire nation felt the grip of the Great Depression. To make matters worse, just nine months later, his father Charley died at the young age of 29.
However, Charles refused to let the Great Depression or the difficulties of his life define him. Instead, like his father and grandfather before him, he clung to God’s Word and took up the mantle to preach the gospel to whoever would listen.
Dr. Stanley’s motivation is best represented by the truth found in Acts 20:24, “Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God's mighty kindness and love.” This is because, as he says, “It is the Word of God and the work of God that changes people’s lives.”
Dr. Stanley’s teachings can be heard weekly at First Baptist Church Atlanta, daily on “In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley” radio and television broadcasts on more than 2,800 stations around the world, on the Internet at intouch.org, through the In Touch Messenger, and in the monthly, award-winning In Touch magazine.

Pastor and bestselling author, Dr. Charles F. Stanley delivers a powerful book of faith, hope, and perseverance, with Waiting on God: Strength for Today and Hope for Tomorrow.
As a former pastor of mine at First Baptist Church – Atlanta, GA for years, as well as his outreach ministry—In Touch, Dr. Stanley is highly respected and have always enjoyed his heart felt messages, strong leadership, and numerous Christian books over the years, as well as his strong faith and wise counsel.
In his latest book, WAITING ON GOD, Stanley dives into every believer’s continuous question of why God does not seem to hear prayers. When the “nevers” of life are discouraging, this is the book for you. Dr. Stanley reiterates to anyone facing problems and darkness, that hope, even though it is not always on our terms or time, He is listening with a bigger and better plan in mind.
There is meaning and hope in these times of waiting on Him to respond. He demonstrates through the pages of the book, that the only “never” you should focus on is that God will never let you down (Deut. 31:6,8). Our heavenly Father is working in the unseen on our behalf and we are not just waiting around for nothing.
No one likes delays. We lack control over our circumstances. None of us are alone, as we all face a common faith-building challenge of Christian life, and trusted pastor Dr. Stanley offers us guidance to endure victoriously. God has his own very specific schedule—vastly different than what we expect.
He reminds us through His message and scriptures, God has a purpose and plan and sometimes we need to wait and be patient in order to fulfill His ultimate plan. We need to learn to be directed by God's timing and wisdom not our own, as an important lesson to be learned as believers.
The message, The Lord has very special plans for us and the way He most often prepares us for them is through times of directed, purposeful, active, and courageous waiting. Of course, herein lies the most difficult task of all, to wait expectantly.
Dr. Stanley gives us timeless, biblical teaching and practical wisdom that will help you make the most of the delays and follow the Father’s lead to the blessings you long for. He offers encouragement by drawing on personal experience and biblical principles no matter where you may be on your spiritual journey.
What we can draw from all this is that waiting on the Lord signifies an expectant endurance that is demonstrated by a directed, purposeful, active, and courageous attitude of prayer. Claiming God’s promises by actively expressing faith in the delays, as the example he points out of working in the gym, this time of waiting is an opportunity to develop our spiritual muscles—faith, hope, and perseverance.
Perseverance is key for receiving the very best God has planned for us. Therefore we must endure—no matter what happens or how long it takes—staying on track when the view becomes dark, as we survive the wait with courage.
Turn the joy of waiting and reaping the rewards by humbling yourself before the Lord and focus on Him versus the desire, remain obedient to His will, and have faith that God will do as He promised and be courageous.
•Accept God’s Direction •Value God’s Timing •Prepare for His Blessings •To Strengthen our Faith •To Sift our Motives and Desires
How do we seek His guidance? •By Reading God’s word •Through Prayer •Through Godly Counsel •Through Circumstances
WAITING ON GOD is an inspiring book of hope for all ages, offering prayers, scripture, easy to follow steps and guidance, combined with steps and Points for Active Waiting.
WAITING ON GOD answers the question, "Why God doesn't seem to answer my prayers?" Charles Stanley admits that it is a challenge to wait on God. "It's the ability to keep hoping when the numbers of life bombard us." First of all, keep your focus steady: "There is absolutely nothing more important than keeping your focus on God rather than dwelling on your circumstances."
This book offers hope for the believer facing dark times. Dr Stanley reminds the reader that "The father has an awesome plan for you--purposes that are fantastic, perfectly suited for you--and that will give ultimate meaning to your life."
He gives a touching example of his granddad, whose plans seemed to be amiss. Grandad kept praying, "Lord, you called me to preach and know how much money I need for a tent. This is the best I can do, but I know you can help me. Father, please show me what to do." Later, the granddad would receive an a surprising gift of 300 one-dollar bills exactly what he needed for his ministry.
♦ Dr Stanley points out that we sometimes have to wait. "Waiting is sometimes necessary for you and me as well. Learning to be directed by God's timing and wisdom not our agenda is one of the most important lessons we ever learn as believers."
♦ Dr Stanley points out that one of the most frequent questions he receives is, "How do I know what the Lord wants me to do with my life?" He lists 4 ways:
(1) The Bible is the first way: "The main way he reveals His purposes for you is always through scripture." (2) Secondly we have to seek the Lord's will through prayer. (3) Thirdly God uses circumstances to help us discern is well. (4) Fourthly God expects us to seek godly counsel.
To help confirm God's will, the author suggests a 7 step process. For example, is it consistent with the Scriptures; and, is this a wise decision?
♦ This book includes a wonderful story about the great philanthropist J.C. Penney and how we came to trust in God after a terrible financial set-back (stock market crash and the Great Depression.) J.C. Penney became a born again believer listening to the classic hymn, "God will take care of you."
√ WAITING ON GOD is an uplifting book--it's one that gives hope, thoroughly grounded in the Bible. This is also a practical book. For example, at the end of each chapter are some activities called points for active waiting.
For another excellent book by Dr Stanley, my favorite is, "Success, God's Way."

NOTE: A COPY OF THIS ARC WAS GIVEN TO ME THROUGH NETGALLEY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.
Love Charles Stanley! Everything he writes always makes me feel better and gives me hope. I've been in a "waiting" season with the Lord for awhile now and, at times, have been wondering where I've gone wrong. Reading this book provided me with the determination to continue to wait however long I need to until the Lord tells me what do and where to go. This book contains wonderful prayers that somehow express everything that I've been feeling and Dr. Stanley always provides relevant scripture that corresponds with his writing. It's another wonderful book that I'll be adding to my "Charles Stanley" collection!
If you are like most people you are well acquainted with waiting. It can be the most annoying thing in the world, especially when the end result is something much anticipated. When you are waiting on God your anxiety can creep up to a whole new level.
In Waiting On God Dr. Stanley presents a way of waiting that is meant to decrease your anxiety and actually change that stress into positive actions. Dr. Stanley opens the book with examples from the life of David. Talk about someone that spent a good portion of their lives waiting on God! Another example that he uses is Abraham and Sarah. Abraham was 75 years old before God even told him he would become a father. It would be another 25 years before the promised child would arrive. Can you even begin to fathom the agony of waiting that long?
Through the use of biblical examples Dr. Stanley leads the reader on a journey to discovering how waiting can actually be a time of preparation. So often we think that when we don't hear from God immediately we are being punished. But what if you changed your point of view to that of anticipating His answer rather than assuming He is either ignoring or chastising you?
Not one thing in this book is a new principle. Every single thing that Dr. Stanley presents comes from the Word of God. The difference for me was actually reading what had been written thousands of years ago with an expectancy of hearing from God.
Dr. Stanley is an author/teacher that I have long trusted. His words speak truth and always point the reader to the Bible and the God who authored it. I always come away from his books with a stronger understanding of Scripture and a deepening love for my Savior.
I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.
Unquestionably one of the most encouraging books I've ready in years both as a business book and a personal life book. We're all struggling with goals and dreams, whether it is to find a new job, a mate or raise your kids right. Sometimes it seems as though we face only obstacles and obstructions. It gets a bit complicated when we try to determine God's will for us -- which of course includes a healthy family, a job that provides for our necessities and a myriad of other good goals. Charles Stanley, in his neighborly, kind way leads the reader to see how waiting on God is a valuable exercise as we move toward godly goals. He describes the process for determining God's will, and then how to develop and exercise the faith, courage and determination to reach the goals that are not immediately accomplished. From the business perspective, this book fits in with books by Napoleon Hill, Darren Hardy, John Maxwell, Shawn Achor and Jeff Olson about determination, patience and delayed gratification. Stanley writes about developing the courage to stay on track by adjusting the focus of your life, to look not at the problems and obstacles, but at the outcome and the omniscient God who can bring you to a place you didn't know you could reach. I read the book in about a week, it's a good read, well-written and very touching. Since I've read it, I've provided it to at least two other people whom I know that are "waiting on God."
I did a devotional version of this on the Bible app with a group of ladies, but I have a feeling that it wasn't the whole version of the book because at the end of the Bible app version, it had a link to purchase the book if you wanted.
I did enjoy Charles Stanley's book on Heaven, but I've been discouraged by other Bible app studies lately. So, before I did the study, in trying to decide whether or not to join the group, I read Goodreads reviews of this study.
One said that the book began by sounding like the prosperity gospel, but it wasn't really, the further one got along in it. The prosperity gospel, or the "health and wealth gospel," is mistaken view that you can get whatever you want by praying for it hard enough, or believing hard enough. That reviewer held a fair assessment.
Having been forewarned by its start, I refrained myself from commenting to the group about it, waiting a little more patiently to see where it was going, and there were good things. It was worth doing, as long as one doesn't jump to conclusions.
Day 1: "From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for Him." - Isaiah 64:4. Beautiful.
Day 2: "Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world." - 1 Peter 5:9 KJV. We are not alone in our suffering, even when we feel like we are. I'd also add that the Holy Spirit is with us: Romans 8:26, "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."
Day 3: "Because when you focus on what you lack, it inspires despair in your heart. You obsess over your own limitations, which reinforces the bondage within you. Remember you sin when you try to meet your needs in your own way rather than the Lord's. So as you fixate on what you don't have, you enslave yourself more to the sin nature, which eventually leads to destruction (Rom. 6:23) It's a disheartening and vicious cycle. But when you single-mindedly set your sights on God, you realize the incredible strength, wisdom, and power that are being employed on your behalf."
An interesting idea - that focusing on our lack causes despair and obsession, and that trying to do it our way is sin, enslaving us more tightly.
It reminds me of the C S Lewis quote, "God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it's not there. There is no such thing."
Day 4: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all they ways acknowledge Hi, and He shall direct thy paths." - Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV. I think that difficulties and insecurities can reveal our idols, and understanding can be one of mine.
Day 5: "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go; I will guide thee with mine eye." - Psalms 32:8 KJV. A beautiful promise. I also love the imagery of the sheep following Jesus' voice.
Day 6: "For ye ... took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward." Hebrews 10:34-35 KJV. The context of this passage of confidence and receiving of promises is heaven, not earth. Some promises are fulfilled not here, but there.
We do have some promises for the journey, however. "I am with you always." "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in time of trouble."
Someone said recently that putting the promises into context (for whom, when, etc) was "don't-get-your-hopes-up theology." I said that it was important so that when crisis comes, we aren't disillusioned into thinking God broke promises He never made, and don't think God has abandoned us, or that we didn't pray hard enough or believe hard enough.
But when we are in crisis, it is more soul-nourishing to reflect on the promises we do have now.
I came across this quote on promises elsewhere: "When discouragements arise like mists in the morning, oh that God's Word may shine them away with the beams of His promises." - Charles Spurgeon
Day 7: This devotional reminded me of a season in my life where sickness and surgery made me have to spend an extra year in graduate school, and I became discouraged over it. I came across a proverb that explained the depth of how I felt succinctly: "Hope deferred makes the heart sick ..." -Proverbs 13:12. I was heartsick, although in retrospect, yes, good did come out of it, in understanding that my life included more than just schooling, I learned to treat myself more gently, the way I would've treated a sick friend, instead of with frustration, and I remember studying the Biblical differences between worldly wisdom and God's wisdom, and seeing the selfish ambition in my own.
I loved this devotional's section on "Fires of affliction" making us useful and effective, teaching us understanding, compassion, and priorities.
A beautiful prayer for me now: "The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands." - Psalm 138:8 KJV
Day 8: "But as it is written, 'Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.'" - 1 Corinthians 2:9 KJV. "Neither have entered into the heart of man." Something so good I can't even imagine it.
I thought of this verse when I first saw the moonbow at Cumberland Falls. I certainly never would've imagined such an ethereal, silvery looking thing as a moonbow existed. And God has other, better things in store for believers that we could never have imagined.
I read a different book today that talked about what our resurrected bodies will look like, wondering, of all the strange things to wonder, whether eunuchs will be healed, or whether they would prefer to be as they had been, especially as there's no marriage in heaven. I thought it's senseless to speculate. Only God knows, and whatever He chooses to do will be good.
But beyond that, whenever we are resurrected, we will be so in awe of God that we will be thinking of Him as the "so good we can't imagine," not thinking of ourselves. Of course, we might eventually get around to self-contemplation.
What an encouragement! If you're anything like me you struggle between waiting patiently for God to open the right doors, and kicking open the ones that make sense in the moment. Whether in business or personal life, it can be difficult to wait for (and sometimes discern) God-opportunities instead of barreling forward with the many "good" opportunities available.
From start to finish the author does a phenomenal job of shedding light on the value and divine purposes of waiting on God for His best. If you are questioning whether God has a good purpose and plan in your time of waiting, the answer is YES!
I highly recommend reading this book, for in it you will find scriptural truth and a treasure trove of inspiration and confidence to wait on God actively, purposefully, and expectantly!
The book dedication says, "To all who wait---that you will take heart and continue to trust the One who never fails." Other than the Bible, I believe I would rank this as my favorite book. Charles Stanley is so encouraging and faith-filled. If you are waiting on anything in your life, even something extremely painful like I was, read this book and hang on to the truths of the Scriptures that he shares. It will get better---it did for me!
I feel like this should be required reading for everyone! The author offers such am incredibly encouraging perspective on our seasons of waiting, no matter what we are waiting for or for how long we have been waiting. I borrowed this from the library but will likely purchase a copy to own so I can reread it or offer it to others who need some encouragement.
Dr. Stanley was one of my mom's favorite authors. He emphasizes the importance, but painful reality of waiting....waiting for God to move in your life. Everything in the Christian life.....causes you to endure. Very well written.
Is there any good in waiting? Waiting requires patience, so if you get a little anxious waiting in lines in the store, or to get your food, or to hear news that you are waiting for, chances are you have not reflected on the good of waiting. Charles Stanley in his study of waiting takes you in an in-depth study of the benefits of waiting. In his black and white but always friendly way of sharing the truth of the word of God, you will be encouraged, strengthen in your faith, and welcome the waiting as you learn more and see the glory of God revealed in your life.
With seven chapters starting with How Long O Lord, we are hit with the cry of our heart. Never! How many times have you said that to yourself in a crisis?
Chapter 2-Assured in God’s Character-fixing our eyes on the author of our faith. Instead of what we don’t have, we enslave ourselves to despair and anxiety. In fixing our eyes on him, we begin to understand who He is and our relationship to Him. We never lose by waiting upon Him and by waiting we are more aware of his presence.
Chapter 3 Surrendering our Focus... This can also mean for us to focus on God’s ability to answer our questions and concerns with his goodness. Waiting usually means waiting for God’s best. Waiting is honoring God. Surrendering our Focus can also mean understanding where our security and confidence is rooted in. Are we heaven minded or earth minded?
Chapter 4- Discerning God’s Will … God created us for a purpose. In the waiting or during a crisis, we seek God and to discover what our purpose is. It is drawing to God and worshipping him in Spirit and in truth in which we were created for. Bringing glory to Him, we show the goodness of God to an unbelieving world.
Chapter 5- Claiming God’s Promises… This is not a claim it or a prosperity Gospel. Claiming God’s promises is ultimately understanding God’s redemptive plan and expressing faith in Christ’s work. There are the general promises of God and the limited promises of God. God’s promises are meant to strengthen our faith in him, not undermine it by disobedience.
Chapter 6 – Staying on Track When the View Becomes Dark … Courage in waiting and standing firm in the faith.
Chapter 7 – The Joy of Waiting- Reaping the rewards. God is our reward. Enough said.
Each chapter Pastor Stanley always challenges you with questions in your waiting and with point by point tied to scripture; you are guided by the truth of the word. With examples from the great men and women of faith in the bible, you have insight to what faith looks like. Each Chapter ends with memorizing scripture and encouragement to bring that scripture to mind as you walk thru your faith. A review and application summarizes each chapter that ends with a thankful heart to what God in working out in your wait. I love how Pastor Stanley can teach on hard truths, but he also is concerned for the people of God to understand and see the joy of their salvation in Christ. Pastor Stanley teaches as a friend. Very encouraging and insightful study of God’s word.

Dr.Charles Stanley is a spiritual mentor like figure to me. He is one of very few men of God, God has used to encourage me to have a closer relationship with Him. Even though I have never met him before, in fact I am from other part of the world, India, his Sunday sermons and writings are such a blessing to me. Another reason for my respect is he is one of very few pastors who never compromised the word of God to satisfy the masses which is a lesson for many megachurch pastors and evangelists all over the world.
This is the first book from Stanley, I have read. I have been kept on God's waiting room for more than seven years for my marriage. At first when things start to fall well before my own eyes, I was clueless, hapless and helpless. When I looked around for some comfort, God talked to me through this book. I have to go through each of the steps part of this process and this book at least ensured that I am on the right track. Despite all the agony, suffering, disappointments, shame and pain I had to go through, I still believe God will one day move me out this gruesome waiting room to His wonderful blessing He has kept for me. I do not want anyone else to go through the pain am going through, but if "waiting" is God's plan for you, this book will help you to large extend. Know one thing for sure: this will grow you up both emotionally and spiritually as a man f you are absolutely waiting on God. And that is one of the purposes, God usually keeps people waiting on Him for long time. If you want to receive some more truths from him on this subject, please listen to his two-part sermons titled "Waiting on God's timing".
So this book and particular approach isn't my cup of tea, but that said (as a Christian reviewing a Christian book), I did find Dr. Stanley's words on waiting on G-d interesting, thought-provoking, and something to keep in my heart. At first I did not like the direction the he was taking -- that if you just ask G-d for what you want and wait, you'll get it -- I am no fan of the so-called "Prosperity Gospel." But Stanley, though I wish he had emphasized it more, did mention that what you want may not be what G-d wants for you -- that you should always keep G-d first in all things, and ask why it is you are waiting for X and Y to occur. This book is probably more for people who are going thru a life event, e.g., loss of job, loss of relationship, hard times, etc. There are some good verses, practical exercises, Biblical examples and places for notes. Even though I have some theological issues with him, it's not a bad read if you're on the issue of G-d's purpose for you and what's going on in your life.
Another winner! This book is all about what the title says and will encourage you, teach you, and grow your relationship with the Lord. I recommend this book to all Believers, especially those who have trouble waiting on God's timing and trying to take everything in-control. This book is definitely worth the read!

This is an excellent book for anyone discouraged because of waiting on God. Stanley looks at Scripture and helps readers understand why God might have us wait. He covers the lessons we can learn and the benefits we can gain. He helps us identify idols and helps with spiritual warfare. He gives many examples illustrating his principles, both from his own life and from Scripture. He has prayers throughout the text and action points at the end of each chapter. A very good book. See my complete review at http://bit.ly/1Ie0NR3. I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
This is an excellent exposition on Waiting for God in your life. At the moment personally I am waiting for God's direction for my life and future ministry and while it is hard at times to wait, Dr Stanley brings encouragement in knowing that while we don't see things happening in our lives God is working in the back ground for our good. Many times I felt like giving up, but once again I was encouraged not to give up as so many people just as they where about to receive God's blessing and best for their life and ministry. I highly recommend this book and will be recommending it to those I meet who are seeking God's will and guidance in their lives.
Waiting is not my strong suit - I'll admit that freely. And waiting for prayers to be answered is one of the hardest things in the world to do. Dr. Charles Stanley addresses this problem in his latest book, Waiting On God: Strength For Today and Hope For Tomorrow.
Using Scripture, personal stories and gentle yet firm commitment, Dr. Stanley guides the reader through the process of learning patience, of learning to wait for prayers answered, and learning to leave the future up to the One who made us and who guides our way.
This was a wonderfully comforting book and it was also very uplifting. I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks answers to the Waiting game.
My first Charles Stanley book. Solid faith-based Christianity that is realistic and not church-y. Dr. Stanley deals with our reluctance to give God the control and understands that we humans find that very hard. (At least I do.) Many Bible verses to support his discussion of how we can achieve the faith that "passes all understanding." Personal prayer and a section for the reader to write his/her reflections at the end of each chapter. This is a book to buy and read again...and again.
Charles Stanley is one of the greatest teachers of all time. He truly walks in the office of teacher. In this book he pierces the heart of every person that is waiting on God for something, and gives practical advice based on spiritual principles. Charles Stanley exhibits the father heart of God as he gives reasons why we wait, what to do while we wait, and what happens after we have waited.
So encouraging when life just hits you...I read this book while my grandmother battled brain cancer. This book helped me let her go, and surrender her to God. She is no longer suffering. I love how Dr. Stanley addresses his readers as "friends", it's just like his sermons. He also has an application and reflection after every chapter.
Charles Stanley uses Scripture to encourage those who are in periods of waiting. It helped change my perspective on my time of waiting; I can see how God is using this time to teach me. This is a book I will be reading over and over again!
I highly recommend this book! If you feel like you're ready to break down, or wondering if God will ever answer your prayers, Dr. Stanley will point you to God's word to encourage you to stay strong during your time of waiting.
