I'd give this one 3 1/2 stars overall. The concept behind the book, honoring fallen officers, is a worthwhile one, as is the donation of proceeds to a good cause. As with any anthology, there are stories better than others. These were all written by police officers, and their knowledge of the arena comes through. However, many of the stories were sorely in need of better editing, and that lack made those reads less compelling than they could have been.

Kathy Bennett wrote a great short story with the perfect balance of not leaving you hanging and wanting to read her entire series.

Overall I would give this Anthology a 5 Star rating, the stories I rated lower were primarily due to writing styles that are not my personal preference. The proceeds go to a great cause and I would recommend this book. It was interesting to peek into the minds and prospectives of former officers turned writers.

A Deadly Second Chance:Kathy Benett
5 Stars
I really liked this story. The multiple POV’s was great. The Supervisor was an idiot, and unfortunately I don’t think that’s an uncommon occurrence in real life. The story touched me and I teared up when they entered the building.

Obligations: Michael A. Black
5 Stars
Another really good story. There’s been a lot in the paper lately about police brutality and it’s wrong, always. However it’s just as wrong when someone commits a crime and a shyster lawyer gets them off on a technicality. Great story showing the frustration felt by Good Cops and Attorneys when a few bad ones don’t follow the rules, someone always pays.

The Verdict: Robin Burcell
5 Stars
Another great story, this one has me crying as I write this because it hits too close to home. On Monday a jury in the next county will deliberate and decide the fate of two men who beat up a 20 year old “friend” (who went to school with my kids) and knocked him out, then burned his body, to hide the evidence, while he was still alive. Juries scare me, forensic evidence is only as good as the testimony presented by the “expert witness” and which version of it they decide to believe. This story very eloquently shows that flaw in our system.

Borders of Morality: Marco Conelli
5 Stars
Good story. I enjoyed the look inside the mind of a detective tracking down leads to close a case. I can only imagine the level of frustration detectives must face trying to do their job and appease the police bureaucracy and public.

The Forever Team: Suzie Ivy
5 Stars
I originally bought this collection because of Suzie, I first was introduced to her a couple of years ago when I read her book about going through the academy and I’ve followed her and all of her identities ever since. I loved this story, I laughed because I love her snarky, strong female characters and I cried, at the domestic call, at the visit with Suii’s former partner’s family, in the alley, by then I was crying so hard my husband asked if I was okay, when I laughed and said I was reading a sad story, he told me I should probably stop reading. Ha, never! Thank you Suzie for always touching my heart with your words.

Fleeing the Wicked: Rick McMahan
4.75 Stars
I enjoyed this story. There was a lot of suspense in this storyline and I enjoyed seeing how that played out. Incorporating the Officer memorial in DC was a great tribute. I took a little off because there were quite a few grammar issues in this story and it did distract a little from the story.

A Bad Day: David Putnam
2 Stars
The writing itself was fine. I’ve read this story twice and I still don’t have much of a clue what it’s about, I have some guesses but this one was just to weird for me.

Death Notice: Mike Roche
3 Stars
I liked the basic story line but I didn’t like the writing style. It’s a personal preference and others will probably find it acceptable, but for me it was very stilted and I struggled to finish reading to the end.

Blue Love Lines: L. Scott Silverli
3.5-4 Stars
This story was okay, it was well written, the storyline was good and the focus on domestic violence was unfortunately all to real. I didn’t care for the ending, again this is personal preference. I’m sure people who regularly read this genre would rate this book higher.

Who Could It Be? David Swords
3 Stars
This story had the same stilted writing style that I don’t care for, it also had no breaks between scenes which made it hard to follow the progression of the story. The overall story idea was interesting and thought provoking.

What a privilege to have found this book that so succinctly honors our husbands, fathers, brothers who serve and have served us all.

All of thee stories are riveting and I couldn't stop reading once I started a story. I have bookmarked most of the authors who have contributed to this collection of stories and can't wait to read their individual books. All of the stories make me more than thankful that my husband has come home from a long day of serving for over 20 years. I hope that many others will read these stories and go on and support the authors by buying their books as well. Thank you for collecting these stories for us to read!

10-Code Written by Cops, Honoring the Service

The stories of the partners of fallen cops. How they handled losing their partner, and/or friend and how they continued on the police force. One began working with K-9's. It also explains how officers handled doing the investigations into their friends death. The stories show the human side of police officers that a lot of people don't want to believe they have. I would recommend this book to everybody to read not only is it good, but all the money from the sales go into the Officers Memorial Police Fund.

I enjoyed this collection, some more than others, but they were all quite readable. Some left me teary (thank you k9 stories), some left me wanting to read more about the characters, and some left me wondering if I'd ever know what really happened (thank you Scott Silverii). The fact that all the authors had careers in law enforcement gives a real authenticity to the stories. The fact that each story is dedicated to a fallen officer (or officers) and that all proceeds of the book are going to a fallen heroes memorial fund makes me feel even better about purchasing and reading the book.

A nice collection of short stories about law enforcement officers who've lost their lives while honoring their oath to serve and protect.
