This is an entertaining tale with misunderstanding and miscommunication, a long-term grudge, snowed in together, bi-awakening, and a family Christmas gathering, featuring step-brothers Nathan and Eli, two young men with a rocky relationship due to overheard comments which hurt Eli five years ago, comments he cannot forget or forgive. Because of that event, Eli has hated Nathan, uncomfortable around him at family gatherings, reading looks and words through his own lens, regardless of Nathan’s meaning. When Eli needs to ride with Nathan to the family Christmas holiday at a cabin in the woods, he is surly and resentful, not wanting to be stuck in a car with Nathan. Things get worse when they have car trouble during a snowstorm while on a short detour to Nathan’s uncle’s cabin. Stuck overnight, Eli gets himself in some trouble and Nathan ends up taking care of him, confusing Eli and not fitting in with the picture he has held of Nathan for so long. Things between them start to thaw, and once they get to the family cabin, they thaw even more, with Nathan finding he is attracted to Eli in more than a brotherly way, until Eli gives Nathan a kiss, and suddenly there are feelings which get out of hand, leading to late night conversations, cuddles and more. Returning home, Eli and Nathan must decide where the relationship can/will go from here or will it come to a stop. Navigating Nathan’s work schedule and whether to admit to family how the relationship has changed becomes the next hurdle, one which resolves itself in its own way, leading them to a HEA in the future.
The characters are believable and relatable, the situation based on misreading an event with incomplete information is realistic, discovering a side to Nathan that Eli never let himself see, and giving into what has obviously been a long term attraction kept me engaged all the way through. Eli went from grumpy to seeing Nathan in a totally different light, Nathan discovered /realized things about himself he had never considered before, both engaged in communication and learned more about each other, correcting a situation which had gone on far too long, and both found the one that they needed all along. It is a sweet, low-angst read with humor and seriousness, short enough for an entertaining afternoon read.
I read the book while listening to the audiobook at the same time, something I had never done before. It was interesting to have the different voices rather than the ones I would create in my head, taking the story to a different dimension. I also deliberately turned off the audio at times to compare the length of time to read a chapter without the audio versus the length of the chapter with the audio, wondering if one way was faster than another. I found that for me, I read faster without the audio, but got more enjoyment with the various voices with the audio, so I will probably try this method again. However you choose to read the book, it is a sweet story, one I think many readers would like, and a definite yes if you are a Rye Cox fan.
I received an ARC and audiobook from the author and this is my voluntary review.
