The Bloom paved the way for an invasion. After the battle for Offutt, the Corwins and the Reeds think they’re safe. They couldn’t be more wrong.
A silent mothership now looms over Omaha—the beings who seeded Earth with spores have arrived.
As answers begin to emerge, one truth is crystal a military base is a bullseye, not a refuge.
Forced back onto the roads, they cross a nation that’s tearing itself apart—civilians and soldiers at war, the infected evolving by the hour, and Bloom Towers pulsing across the heartland like a heartbeat.
Paula can feel that pulse. Changed by her brush with infection, she’s tethered to the Bloom—visions and night terrors reveal why the invaders came… and maybe, how to stop them. The trail points west, toward a clandestine facility steeped in secrets.
At last, they discover why the invaders have come, and what it will cost to stop them. But the pulse of the Bloom is a countdown, and time is almost up.
They’ll have just one chance to pull humanity back from the brink before the unraveling is complete…

About three fourths through the book I thought that I wouldn't like the direction the book was going and nearly stopped reading. The book does a very good job of putting in the gritty way people would act during an alien invasion, apocalypse. There are definitely heroic people as well. So the ending was much better then I imagined it would be. So the Corwins and the Reeds family are very believable dragged through the major events that are happening during the spore invasion. They end up at the military base in Omaha, Nebraska where a swap of lucid infected are traded for a human captive. However, the aliens don't think like we do, they have a hive mind, where one is all and all is one. The aliens are after one whom our government has and our government has been torturing trying to get information. The way that the hive mind works, if you torture one you are torturing all of them. The aliens give them 72 hours to give them back this prisoner or they will exterminate all free life on earth. However, can the aliens be trusted.
You need to read the 1st in the series for this one to make sense. It's the ending of a story of alien invasion, that appears there is no way to fight. Humans are infected with a "hive mind" and none of our weapons do damage to the alien ships. How will Nate save his family and those of his best friend? He never gives up and never sleeps! The story is gripping. The ending is totally unexpected. And it was fun that part took place near where I grew up. My only disappointment was that Max, the dog, and young Jonah didn't step up. They were there in the story all the along, but just seemed to be hindrances all the time. I'd like to have seen them do something "heroic". The other characters were interesting and well fleshed out. I especially liked the gutsy daughter, Riley. Don't start this series unless you can go without sleep for a few days.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Unraveling by Jasper T. Scott - book #2 in the Darkening series. Nate and his family are trying to escape the Bloom, humans turned rabid, and aliens. Nowhere is safe. Humans can not hurt the attacking aliens as they move to take over Earth and mind control everyone the Bloom comes in contact with. Interestingly, the Bloom made it possible for the Aliens to control the rapid humans with a "hive" mentality, doing their bidding. Unlike zombies, these rabid humans can shoot weapons and drive tanks to battle those not infected.
Fortunately, the humans have a plan that could defeat the aliens. Now, they needed volunteers to carry it out.
The story is well-written with loads of action. The ending is surprising and fulfilling. Don't miss this series. I don't recall anything like it.
The Unraveling, sequel to the stellar (no pun intended) The Darkening, picks up immediately where The Darkening left off, with the alien ship just becoming visible. The book flies along at breakneck pace, which perfectly fits the plot. The characters truly reveal who they are in this book, flawed, self sacrificing and likeable. The book is more reliant on character than imagery like The Darkening was, though that is a glib simplification. Overall, there is simply nothing to criticize in this book. 5/5 stars, highly recommended for fans of science fiction, thrillers and especially fellow fans of the hybrid sci-fi/thriller genre, or any audience above about 12!
So much pain, fighting, distrust combined with love, trust, loyalty all in one action packed book. Superb characters and such a twisting, somersaulting story with side stories coming and going. Jasper Scott’s writing almost compels you keep reading as you want to know what happens next. Humans infected by an alien cloud worldwide and so many things change. Interaction and relationships between the main characters reveal much about our resilience, ability to show love amid huge trauma and so much more. There is some happy moments here and there but this is one for those who thrive on intensity. Enjoy!
This is the second book in this series and it does not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a book that was hard to put down.
The story is about the Corwins and the Reeds escaping from the people affected by the Bloom, the invaders and the mother ship. They finally discover why the invaders have come and what they want. They now have a limited time to persuade the authorities to comply before the invaders destroy everything. It is a race against time.
The Unraveling follows Nate, his family, and their friends as they flee the Bloom, a cosmic spore that activates in the dark and with water, turning humans into feral animals. They are embedded with the military now, but are their allies friends or foes? And now the alients are here, how can humanity defeat an enemy so much more powerful? nate and his family are strong characters, put through hell and back. He is a devoted family man, and his spirit and determination don't waver, even against near-impossible odds.
The Unraveling is the marvelous second and final installment of The Darkening. Master wordsmith, Jasper T. Scott has again brought to life a greatly entertaining sci-fi thriller. The main characters are very well developed and created in me an empathy with their calamitous lives. And, the storyline is incredibly intense. I was blown away by the finale and highly recommend both books, enjoy!
Disclaimer: I received this ARC from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
What a fantastic book. Winter comes early on Earth. Like during a summer bbq for the Corwin family. Their friends all left early to deal with the sudden change in weather. But that wasn't snow coming down. It was the beginning of a terrible time for Earth. The Corwins have many hardships to face and it makes you wonder if you could handle things as they did. Thank you, Jasper T. Scott, for writing such a mind-blowing tale for us to read. Was worth the wait.
The Darkening series is one of Jasper Scott's best!
The sequel to book 1 is really good SF. Lots of action, scares, and surprises but what I loved is his consistency with his main characters. The devotion to family including the dog. He captures the trauma of running for your life with children so realistically. Scott ties everything together to a very satisfying ending. He created aliens with a whole new twist. I'd love a book 3.
Mr Scott continues to evolve as a writer. This duology is a magnificent journey. The story arc is very creative and well crafted. Starting in Montana, USA, to Nebraska and ending in the skies above Colorado, the tale has many twists and pivots testing the characters and their relationships as they try to survive. An enthralling read.
This second book was amazing. Action from beginning to end. He couldn't have written in a better cast. I even shed tears in the end. This series was great. I couldn't hardly put it down. I recommend reading this to all that love science fiction. Don't want to say too much, I'd give it away. Trust me just read it!
Some books are interesting in the first book but the second usually drifts Not these books. The E first just warmed me up for the second with lots of action . The ending was seamless working in with the story. It was a very nice reading.
Another amazing story that won’t disappoint I was completely immersed in all that was happening with the characters. I definitely felt as if I was a part of the story.
This book had me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last page. I cried when Riley got her eyesight back and Aiden told Paula that they could cure Nate😭😊❤️❤️
