She escaped to survive. He taught her how to live again.
Stella
Leaving wasn’t the hard part—staying in a life that broke me was. After escaping an abusive relationship, I found myself in the quiet town of Love, Saskatchewan. I came looking for safety, but what I found was something a chance to rebuild, to breathe, and maybe even to belong. Surrounded by strong women who refused to let me fall and a community that embraced me as one of their own, I started to believe in second chances. And then there was Calvin, with his quiet strength and haunted eyes—he saw the parts of me I’d long buried. For the first time, I wondered if I was allowed to want more than just survival.
Calvin
I didn’t have time for complications—my family’s lumber farm was crumbling, and the pressure felt like it was on me to save it. But then Stella walked into town with her guarded smile and fire-forged spirit, and everything shifted. She wasn’t just strong, she was the kind of strong that makes you want to be better. I wasn’t looking for love, but now I’d risk everything to protect the peace she fought so hard to find. Even if the past came back to threaten us both.
This book is a beautifully tender story of healing, hope, and learning how to live again after surviving the unthinkable. Stella’s journey is handled with so much care and emotional depth. Her escape from an abusive relationship isn’t portrayed as the finish line—it’s just the beginning. Watching her arrive in Love, Saskatchewan, broken but determined, and slowly find safety, community, and self-worth was incredibly moving. The found-family aspect, especially the strong women who surround and support her, adds so much warmth and strength to the story.
Calvin is exactly the kind of hero this story needed. Quiet, steady, and carrying the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, he never tries to rush Stella or save her—he simply gives her space to heal and sees her for who she truly is. The connection between Stella and Calvin builds gently, rooted in trust, patience, and mutual respect, making their romance feel deeply earned. This is a soft yet powerful love story that proves second chances are real, healing is not linear, and survival can grow into something beautiful. An emotional, heartfelt read that lingers long after the last page. 💛
Received Safe Love as an ARC from Luna and the author. Safe Love is truly an amazing read, it’s so healing, emotional, cute and also very suspenseful. There were so many little twists and turns that made reading the book so much more enjoyable! All of the characters were very well developed, I can’t even pick my favourite character because I love them all, except the ones we definitely aren’t meant to like.
Jessica did such an amazing job on her first book and I can’t wait to read more from her!
I really enjoyed this book, especially from a debut author! This is set in small town Saskatchewan, where Stella lands after leaving her abusive ex. What she finds is a community with the kindest hearts, and a broody lumberjack.
The healing, the suspense and a man who isn’t afraid to show his emotions? Yes please!
TROPES: Small town Suspense Lumberjack MMC Found family She’s on the run
Safe Love by Jessica Pichula is a heartfelt small-town romance that blends healing, found family, and quiet strength with an undercurrent of suspense.
Stella’s story begins as she escapes a toxic, abusive relationship and finds herself in the small town of Love, Saskatchewan. What follows is not an instant fix, but a thoughtful, realistic journey of rebuilding—learning to feel safe, to trust again, and to believe she deserves more than survival. The supportive community around her, especially the strong female friendships and found-family elements, added so much warmth and emotional depth to the story.
Calvin is a steady, protective MMC whose strength lies in patience and consistency rather than intensity. Their relationship unfolds slowly and naturally, reinforcing the book’s central theme of safety. This is a true slow burn with minimal spice (between closed-door and open-door), where emotional connection always takes priority.
While this isn’t my usual darker romance preference, I truly appreciated Safe Love for what it is: a well-written story told with care, intention, and respect. The final chapters introduced unexpected tension and twists that kept me hooked and reminded me that healing isn’t linear.
A strong recommendation for readers who enjoy small-town romance, healing journeys, found family, and emotionally rich love stories with heart.
you wouldn't know it by the cover, but this story was so suspenseful and intense. while also being sweet and healing. Stella is finding herself after escaping an abusive relationship. in a small town called Love, of all places. her story was heartbreaking, but also rewarding watching her stand up for herself. fighting back. Calvin was simply the sweetest, instantly drawn to Stella from the moment he laid eyes on her. and no..it wasn't a fast burn or paced. it was a steady slow burn. and when the fire finally lit, it was all worth it. The town of Love is probably exactly what you'd picture. like a cute little hallmark town with hidden gems within. ☺️
seriously though, just when you thought the characters would get some peace...something more suspicious happens. it kept me hooked and turning those pages.
I really just enjoyed this. the story was sweet while also being full of suspense. there was so much healing and comfort mixed in with it all.
the ending was the sweetest. I couldn't get enough, and the sneak peek to book 2!!! 👀 immediately adding to my tbr. I can't wait to read it.
thank you Jessica and lunaliterary.management for the arc. 🫶🏻
Stella is on the run from an abusive marriage, desperate for a fresh start. She finds refuge in the small town of Love, taking a room at a cosy B&B while she figures out her next move.
The family who run it welcome her with a warmth she’s never known, but fear still clings to her. Loud noises make her flinch. Crowds make her panic. Trust feels impossible.
Then she meets Calvin — the rugged, soft-hearted lumberjack who slowly coaxes her back to life and reminds her how to smile.
But her ex-husband isn’t ready to let her go… and he’s willing to cross dangerous lines to get her back.
This one hit me right in the feels.
I have a small understanding of what it’s like to be in a situation like this, and it made every page feel that bit more personal. It’s a story about survival — about finding strength when you feel like you have absolutely none left. About being brave when bravery feels impossible.
It’s about learning to love again, even when your history with love has been painful and complicated.
More than anything, it’s a reminder that you can get through it. That the fear doesn’t last forever. That healing is possible.
Safe Love was a heart-warming and beautifully written book.
Reading this as a therapist made me pause and reflect. The trauma Stella experienced was real and powerful, but it never defines who she truly is as an individual. Instead, the focus is on what comes after the trauma: how you survive, how the journey can be overwhelming, and how the right support can help you thrive. It provides the reminder that healing doesn’t happen in isolation, but having chosen support and love can be anchors for the healing journey. I will 100% be using this as a reference in the future.
I’m so proud of Jessica Pichula for such a strong and meaningful debut. The characters felt real, and the care and effort put into this story truly shine. Every chapter reinforced why this was an easy five-star read for me.
A fantastic start to the series, and I can’t wait to read more 💗💗
What a beautiful story about Love on the prairies! When I saw this book was centered in Saskatchewan I needed to read it! Jessica has written a fabulous romance and I’m so obsessed with this quirky hilarious family. Stella escaping an abusive relationship is hiding in small town Saskatchewan. Love to be exact. She stumbles into an old bed and breakfast and immediately feels at home. While a little timid at first she starts to fit right into this amazing family. Calvin is a steady rock for his family. Always there for everything. He’s a fixer and is instantly captivated by Stella and can sense the darkness in her eyes. Their friendship grows and is slow and steady evolving into that true everlasting love. With a bit of drama and obsessed exs 😉 But that Gramma Trixie, now she steals the show she’s an absolute queen! What a fantastic book this was!!
What a pleasure it was to receive an early copy of this book — thank you so much!
This story was utterly healing in the very best way. I think second-chance romances might officially be my new favorite trope.
The warmth, love, and open arms that Stella is welcomed with by Calvin and his family is incredibly sweet. Watching her slowly find herself again — regaining her independence and strength — was beautiful to read. The slow burn between her and Calvin builds perfectly, and when the spice hits, it’s absolutely worth the wait. And don’t even get me started on Calvin — overprotective, a little grumpy, but so clearly soft where it counts.
If you’re looking for: • an adorable second-chance romance • an overprotective, slightly grumpy MMC • a FMC rediscovering herself • found family vibes • small-town charm • and some truly satisfying spice
This was a breath of fresh air! I loved the way the found family in this story made me feel. Calvin and Stella really showed up for eachother and it made me smile so big. There were some darker themes mentioned throughout so check content warnings first. I felt like those parts were done so well and really showed what kind of strength Stella had and also the patience and tender caring that Calvin showed. If you enjoy a small town romance with found family and a strong FMC this book is for you!🩷 Thank you so much Jessica and Luna Literary for allowing me to read this early! It was so beautiful!
I really enjoyed this story about found family and learning to love yourself again!
You're definitely pulled into and encapsulated with the story as you follow Stella on her journey of a fresh start.
Both Stella and Calvin and honestly most of the characters are so relatable in their own way and have such lovable personality! I really enjoyed this story and how there was romance but it was on the back burner of the story as Stella has a past that she has to work through with the loving help of Calvin.
Thank you Luna Literacy and Jessica Puchula for the Advanced Reader Copy of Safe Love.
Do you ever read a book description and see the tropes for a book and just know you need to read it ASAP? That was Safe Love for me.
WHAT TO EXPECT 💚 Found Family 💚 Emotional Healing 💚 Romantic Suspense 💚 Slow Burn 💚 Caretaking 💚 Heroine in Hiding
After escaping a life that nearly broke her, Stella arrives in the quiet town of Love, Saskatchewan, looking for nothing more than safety and a place to breathe. What she finds is a community of fierce women and a second chance she never thought possible.
Focused on saving his family’s struggling lumber farm, Calvin has no room for distraction. That is until he meets Stella. Her fiery spirit challenges him to be better, and her presence turns his world upside down.
As Stella learns that she deserves more than just survival, Calvin realizes he’ll risk everything to protect the peace she’s worked so hard to build. But with the shadows of the past looming, can they find a way to live happily ever after?
I was absolutely not expecting the plot twist at the end. I usually can guess how a “mystery” is going to solved, but this book kept me guessing until the end. I like that although this is a romance book, it didn't overtake the whole plot. The whole premise is a feel good book about second-chances, survival, and finding the people who will love you for you.
This book was well-written and had an interesting plot, but it wasn’t my favorite. Stella, fleeing an abusive boyfriend, ends up in the small town of Love, where she befriends a local family and falls for Calvin, who’s trying to save his family’s farmland. Stella starts a new life in Love, seeking safety and self-discovery. The story includes a found family with their antics, a slow-burn romance between Calvin and Stella, and a suspenseful side plot. While it was a good story, it didn’t captivate me throughout. I found it difficult to read in one sitting and had to return to it. I love slow burns, but this one was too slow, and their relationship lacked the depth and connection I was hoping for. It was an emotional and solid read, but it didn’t wow me.
A heart-stealing, soul-healing small-town romance!
From the very first page, this book had me in a chokehold—and honestly? It never let go.
Stella’s story is raw, emotional, and deeply authentic. After escaping an abusive relationship, she finds herself in the quiet town of Love, Saskatchewan, searching for safety, but what she discovers is so much more. A place to heal. A place to belong. A place where strong women lift her up, a community wraps her in warmth, and second chances feel possible.
And then there’s Calvin. OH. MY. HEART. A quiet, protective lumberjack with a soft soul and cat-dad energy? Say less. Calvin is the kind of MMC who doesn’t just protect, he sees. He never tries to fix Stella, only supports her as she learns how to live beyond survival. Their connection is gentle, powerful, and beautifully earned (with a couple of ups and downs!).
This book delivers some truly top-tier tropes: Small-town romance Suspense Found family Hurt/comfort
The found family aspect is immaculate. I immediately wanted to be adopted by the Hart family. Every interaction felt warm, real, and full of love, making the town of Love feel like a character in its own right.
The heavier themes are handled with incredible care and authenticity. You can feel that this story was written by someone who understands trauma and healing on a deeply personal level. The suspense keeps you hooked, but never overshadows the emotional journey, you’re fully invested, turning pages without even realising how much time has passed.
This book is completely bingeable, emotionally satisfying, and one of those rare stories that leaves your heart feeling full. While I haven’t personally lived Stella’s experience, I know many women who have similar experiences, and this story resonated deeply. I was right there with her; every step of her journey toward reclaiming herself.
I am officially obsessed and cannot wait to read the rest of this series.
Highly, highly recommend 💖📚
Thank you to the author and Luna Literary for an early copy. All opinions are my own.
Safe Love by Jessica Pichula is a well written small town romance focused on healing, safety and second chances.
While this isn’t my usual type of read…I typically gravitate toward much darker romance…I can absolutely appreciate this book for what it is: a strong story told with care, emotion and intention.
Stella’s journey after escaping an abusive relationship is handled thoughtfully and respectfully. The themes of rebuilding, learning to feel safe again and finding belonging are central to the story and the supportive community around her adds real warmth and depth. The female friendships and found family elements were especially well done.
Calvin is a steady, protective MMC whose strength lies in patience and consistency rather than intensity. Their relationship develops slowly and naturally, fitting the tone of the book and reinforcing the overall theme of safety.
The romance is soft, comforting, and emotionally driven, with a spice level that sits somewhere between closed door and open door…present, but not the main focus.
Although this wasn’t a personal favourite in terms of trope preference, it was a genuinely good book with solid writing and an engaging story. The teaser for the second book particularly intrigued me and left me curious to see where the series goes next.
A strong recommendation for readers who enjoy small-town romance, healing journeys, found family and gentle love stories with heart.

Book Review : 4.5⭐️ Spice Level : 2 🌶️
Guys, to say I’m obsessed with this story is an understatement. I want to say Thank you to Jessica Pichula and Luna Literary Management for trusting me to be apart of her team and for the opportunity to get an ARC of this book!
Some stories don’t just tell a love story, they hold your hand while you heal. This book was exactly that.
Watching Stella escape an abusive past and slowly learn that she’s allowed to want more than survival was emotional, raw, and incredibly empowering. Her journey felt honest, the fear, the quiet strength, the way healing isn’t linear. I loved how the women in this town wrapped around her and refused to let her fall.
Found family always gets me, and this one delivered.
Calvin was the perfect steady presence, quiet, loyal, carrying his own weight while never trying to dim Stella’s fire. Their connection grew softly but deeply, rooted in safety, respect, and choosing each other even when the past threatens to creep back in.
And listen… Grandma Trixie? Absolute ICON. I loved her so much. Every scene with her added warmth, wisdom, and that kind of no nonsense love that makes you feel instantly at home. She was hands down one of my favorite parts of this story.
If you love small town romance, emotional healing, strong women, found family, and love that feels earned.. add this one to your TBR immediately.
I was so blessed to receive this book as an ARC! I crushed out the first half in one sitting and if not for work and children, I would have finished it the next day. THIS BOOK YA'LL! 🫣🥲❤️🩹🌸💗😱🥰 I adored this story!
The town of Love is whimsical, welcoming, with just a hint of 'too good to be true' wonder. The characters were well fleshed out, Grandma Trixie healed my inner child with her words of wisdom, Melody and Olivia warmed my heart with their acceptance and support, and oh boy if Calvin ain't the perfect Canadian man! The setting and general plot give me major Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon vibes. The goals of these games are typically: Find your place in a new town, make friends, fall in love, save the community. And although this book is so much more than that, the basics are the same. I DEVOURED IT. As a huge fan of these cute farming simulator games this book gave me something I never knew I needed! I mistakenly thought this would be a simple romance, but I was so wrong. Safe Love is cozy, romantic, inspiring, and suspenseful! The town of Love was possibly my favorite part. It was vividly described, filled with charm, and every store has a cute love themed name! I want to be strolling down those streets right now! Bottom line this book made me smile, cry, blush, and gasp in shock. I highly recommend it. 💐🪓
Huge thank you to the author and to Luna literary management for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest review!
Safe Love follows the story of a girl who overcame her fear and fled from an abusive relationship in hopes of finding herself again. After driving for what feels like ages, she comes upon a town called Love. Love was the farthest thing she was looking for at the moment but soon enough this little town and all the people in it prove to her that love can exist as well as a sense of home.
I loved the writing of this story. I felt like it was done so beautifully and it really handled the topic of abusive relationships pretty well. I felt like Stella’s character was written with so much love and care that she became one of my favorite characters of 2026. I also love that Calvin and his entire family accepted Stella into their lives and were all so protective of her. Stella found the best town for her as well as the best people to be surrounded by. Seeing them all let her be herself, even when she was jumpy and scared, I loved how attentive everyone was and gave her the safe space she needed to heal. Calvin and Stella were the absolute sweetest together and I enjoyed their story so much.
I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book to review, thank you to the author and Luna Literary.
A fast paced, heartwarming, small town romance with suspense!
Stella is fleeing an abusive relationship and finds herself in the small town of Love, Saskatchewan. There she finds the chance to not only escape but to rebuild her life. What she didn't expect is the quiet but strong lumberjack, Calvin, that becomes ingrained in her life. Stella didn't come to this aptly named town to find romance, but it sure found her. Along with the friends she makes, Stella becomes to feel safe and part of the community. That is until her past comes to her new life and threatens to ruin everything she has worked for.
This was a great debut novel by Jessica Pichula and a fantastic example of romantic suspense! The way she interwove the characters and the story will keep you on your toes! I also loved the strong female representation in this book. While a lot of the characters have gone through hardships, they have only seemed to make them stronger and uplifting of the other women in their lives. I now want to move to Love, Saskatchewan and attend the harvest festival and that speakeasy bookstore!
This small-town romance was a suspenseful emotional read full of healing and a slow-burning romance that built to a beautiful love story.
This was my first read by Jessica Pichula and she succeeded in giving me all the feels and chills and left me feeling happy in the end.
Stella and Calvin are so well written. I loved every bit of how their relationship developed. I wanted nothing more than to befriend and give Stella the biggest hug, she's such a resilient FMC with the biggest heart. And Calvin was the biggest green flag hero with a dirty mouth ever! Not only did he take care of her but the things he did for her were so thoughtful. I just love an MMC who's down bad and falls first and hard.
I love the small-town found family great group of friends vibes. These side characters were fantastic and added another great layer to the story.

I'm looking forward to more from this author and series.
Thank you Luna Literary and Jessica Pichula for the opportunity to read this book.
Firstly, thank you so much to the author and literary agency for an ARC of Safe Love! I was super excited about this one as a Sask girl myself!
Safe Love was a darling debut novel! Taking place in a small Saskatchewan town, this novel has all the sweet homey feels you want in a small town story. The descriptions of the scenery, the fun local businesses, the characters... it all blends together to make a wonderful picture of small town life in Saskatchewan.
This story is a romantic suspense novel so you are going to get those sweet moments of falling in love, but there is a decent amount of tension as well as Stella navigates leaving an abusive and toxic relationship and the odd (and sometimes.es downright sinister) things that keep occurring to her. As with any suspense story, there is a twist. I (sorta?) saw the twist coming but it didnt occur in the way I thought it would. The players were expected, the outcome was not, which made me very excited! I love being able to be surprised by a story.
Admittedly, the pacing of the story felt a bit off at times. There were moments that felt too rushed and others that I felt could have taken less space on page as I personally felt they didn’t add much to the story or were adding details that felt unneeded to the outcome and plot.
I did really enjoy the characters and can clearly see who we may get books about in the future! Definitely some characters I need MORE of 👀
Safe Love, Jessica Pichula's first book in the Love and Lies Series, is engaging, emotional, and suspenseful. The story features numerous twists that enhance the reading experience.
Stella’s story is handled with care, emphasizing that escaping abuse is just the start of her journey. Her arrival in Love, Saskatchewan, and gradual healing through support from a found family—especially strong women—add warmth and strength to the narrative.
Calvin is a calm and reliable hero who gently supports Stella as she heals, never pushing her. The trust and respect they build form the foundation of their slowly developing romance, making it truly believable. This touching love story shows that everyone deserves a second chance and that recovery is rarely a straight line. Its emotional resonance lingers well after the last page is turned.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories that include healing, new beginnings, and small town romances.
I finished reading Safe Love late last night. What was supposed to be a short read before bed turned into me reading the last 60% of the book because I could not stop. I was hooked. And I NEEDED to know what was going to happen next. In my head I had a predictions as to what was going to happen Well, let me tell you... things happened I did not expect! My husband was sleeping beside me and it took a lot of will power for me to not shout "WHAT?!?!" This book filled me so many emotions. I laughed, I cried, I was angry, I had hope, and I felt her strength.
I whole heartedly believe Safe Love contains poweful messages. Messages that I think people need to hear. Although the story was fictional, Stella's story is a reality for so many women.
Thank you Jessica and Luna Literary for the early copy of Safe Love.
I wanted to love this book, but unfortunately it wasn't for me.
Stella is running from an abusive boyfriend and ends up in the small town of Love, where she befriends a local family and falls in love with Calvin, a sweetheart who just wants to protect and provide for his family. The town felt too perfect for me; even though the appeal of books set in small towns is the sense of community and belonging, Love just felt too perfect. Stella becomes friends instantly with everyone, and the only person who doesn't like her is Calvin's ex. The characters also felt one-dimensional; Stella and Calvin felt like they wouldn't exist outside of each other.
It's a good story with a clear villain, a couple of twists and turns, but unfortunately it didn't work for me. But if you're in the mood for something light with a little bit of tension to escape reality, you might like this.
Thank you Luna Literary and Jessica Pichula for the early copy.
Found family 👨👩👧👧 Overprotective mmc 💪 Lumberjack MMC 🪓 Grieving 💔 Leaving an abusive relationship
After escaping from her abusive ex, Stella finds herself in the town of Love. She falls right into the arms of Calvin who is also grieving over the loss of his father and struggling with a Lumberjack company that has seen better days. Stella and Calvin are both perfect when it comes to finding balance and having that special person. While Calvin and Stella are both trying to come up with a plan to get the town and Calvin's family business back on the map they slowly start to learn about secrets that come to light. If you like Catherine Cowles you will love Jessica's new story as it has the perfect blend of small town suspense with a found family and slow burn mix!
Thank you so much for the ARC! I truly enjoyed how sweet Calvin was and I loved seeing how resilient Stella was after leaving such a terrible situation
Loved!!!! This had me hooked from the very beginning. Stella is leaving a very toxic/abusive relationship and she stumbles upon a small town called Love where ends up at a small bed and breakfast. The owner Trixie is the best! She’s so full of wisdom and I’m not going to lie I was highlighting so much of her advice. Her family slowly starts to become like family to Stella and of course there’s our lumberjack Calvin who does everything to prove to her she’s stronger than what she came from♥️ this is definitely a slow burn with very little spice but the found family in this is absolutely amazing. The last few chapters had me at the edge of my seat with some good twists!!! So good!!! I will 100% be continuing this series💖
Thank you so much Jessica Pichula and Luna Literary for this gifted ARC!
3.5 stars - I received this book as an ARC and my honest review is below.
Stella is one of the strongest most caring FMCs that have ever been written. Her love for everyone around her and willingness to go above and beyond were amazing. I loved the relationship between Stella and Trixie and how quickly Trixie became a grandmother figure to Stella. Calvin falling head over heels for Stella immediately was a little bit much for me, but I loved how well he navigated the scars from her past. While I love a romantic suspense, I feel like . I did love the girl gang that formed in this book and am looking forward to watching their love stories unfold as well.
When I say I fell in love with Safe Love, I am not lying. I literally devoured this book. I stayed up to finish it because I just couldn’t help myself!
Stella just got out of a bad relationship and is wanting to get as far away as possible. She left Utah and went to Love, Saskatchewan. At first she was skeptical because why would a small town that she happened upon be called Love when she just got out of a horrible situation. Upon arrival at the local bed and breakfast, she is automatically welcomed and made to feel at home. Trixie is the bed and breakfast owner and she is like everyone’s grandmother. She makes Stella feel at ease right away.
Calvin works with the family business and occasionally helps his grandma out when she needs it. When he was asked to bring Stella’s bags up he did it without question and when he first saw her he was immediately attracted to her.
Stella is very jumpy in the beginning, but Cal and his family help her out along the way and make it known she is safe with them.
Things start happening to Stella and her belongings and it puts everyone on high alert. Cal will do everything in his power to make sure Stella is okay and unharmed, but will that be enough?
Safe Love is a small town, romantic suspense that will keep you on your toes and will make you want more! Definitely worth the read and I cannot wait for the next one in the series!
Safe Love by Jessica Pichula Book 1 of Love and Lies
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this. It is so good! I love a small town romantic suspense. The setting is like a Hallmark small town scene where everyone is friendly and kind. Stella runs away to the town, Love, and finds it be everything she could ever hope for. The people, environment, and scenery is just the right fit. She meets Calvin who is the complete opposite of her ex boyfriend. She thinks she can finally be happy, until her past comes back to remind her that things might not be so easy. I really loved this book. Everything I love about a small town romance with a little bit of suspense. This is my first read from Jessica, and I already can’t wait for book 2.
