Imagine how my brain nearly exploded when it turned out that the fantasy sequence at the end of last volume was canon. I mean, that’s quite the approach to take to something that felt like a bonus.

It’s appropriate in its way - I have genuinely never read a shojo manga quite as bizarre as My Special One. From its wild antics, which make some of my personal faves seem tame, to jettisoning its main characters for other main characters, it has never lacked for shock.

Yet this final volume does kind of keep on rehashing its usual gags in pursuit of its finale. Miscommunications abound here and, while I was happy to have the little notes of judgement detailing when the characters were wrong return, we’ve seen this story.

And this time we see it twice, as Emika and Kanato end up on opposite sides of wanting to get married (except they aren’t) and then Sahoko and Kouta essentially repeat the same process.

Sometimes the surreal craziness wins the day. The joke about Kouta’s idea for proposing is as wickedly funny as it is stupid (albeit not to him) and the way it finally plays out pays the whole thing off for all it’s worth.

Honestly, a bit more zany would probably have made this hit a little harder. Like I said, this has been done and done before both in this series and several others. It was kind of a bummer to have Kouta and Sahoko come back yet end up in the same spot.

I mean, they’re all fun enough to spend time with as a whole and there are worse send-offs than what we got here, but the plane wobbles a fair bit on landing. Or maybe just loops the tower a few times, depending on my preference for the metaphor in question.

What really makes it all that stand out, honestly, is the bonus manga. Here’s something about a playboy and a girl who can’t be honest with one another and it tells a fairly satisfying story that wraps up in twenty economic pages.

Then back in the main pages we have all the usual back and forth and wanting one thing but saying another and then five seconds of conversation sorts it all out. I don’t hate the message of being true to yourself and loved for yourself, but still a long road to get there.

Overall, the series has had its ups and downs, but the ups have been admittedly very strong. I got some seriously busted gut from some of the gags in the various volumes and I didn’t hate the pairings. It just went long, that happens, yet it never felt too onerous.

3.5 stars - unlike last time, not enough jokes to make it worth rounding up, although that proposal gag IS something else. Not the strongest series, but it was a worthwhile read for what it offered.

Good ending! We got to wrap up both our couples and get them their HEA! The art is still very cute. I like how both couples really seem great for one another. But I was happiest to see Sahoko and Kouta, I have missed them. Kouta is so silly, I really have a hard time believing his age, he act like such a kid but that works cause Sahoko is pretty serious. He really appreciates her. He made me laugh so much with those animals. Kanato really gets Emika, I like when he gently confronted her about her anxiety. It was really sweet. I am gonna miss both these couples.
