Marzana was once death in the dark. Now she teaches others not to become her.

At Bloodlust Academy, hidden in the shadows of a world fraying at its edges, ex-assassin Marzana—Marz to those brave enough to speak her name—teaches young vampires how to control their hunger, power, and rage.

But when the academy is raided by human forces and her students are stolen for something far worse than death, the mask of peace begins to crack. War is stirring again and it’s coming for her.

In the chaos, a human soldier throws himself into harm’s way to save her. Everett Hill should be her enemy. Instead, he bleeds in her arms and against every instinct, she takes him in.

He’s searching for something too, the Council of Five, and the one among them who can wield the power of truth. Everett wants answers about what happened to his family. Marz wants her students back and maybe, for once, to stop running from who she was.

But as they draw closer to the heart of the conflict, Marz begins to fear that the end of the war won’t bring peace… only truths she may never be able to live with.

WE REIGNING!

One of my most anticipated reads of 2026 and I was blessed with an ARC!

Ophelia gave me what I needed in a badass FMC, the most serious, yet unserious MMC, a true ride or die bestie, and a villian who keeps a bit too close. A reminder of just how much found family sings to me.

My favorite hands down has to be Bunny, but you'll just have to jump in to see why. Right behind her is tied between Marz and Connie. I am always drawn to those who were dealt a not so lucky hand and rise against it and become the most resilient version of themselves.

EVERETT! The sweet soldier he is. Seeing him have his entire world rocked and try to find some new normal gave me life! I saw a lot of myself in him and his coping mechanisms and while I had to stop and reevaluate myself a time or two I just wanna give that man a hug and tell him we got this.

This is a banger. & if you get a chance to check out some of the art for this it just ties it all together sooooo beautifully. Excellent job my babes!

Thank you Ophelia for the ARC!

Wow. Honestly, the last 15% kind of has me .. speechless.

Marz, I LOVE. Bunny, my baby. Everett, 🫂. Benny, 🤨
Most of our core group had me invested from their first appearance. Like, the way this family gets found. 😮‍💨 Forced to face their trauma, then BOND? Please! ❤️‍🩹

Marzana is clearly a badass, naturally fierce protector. Every act she does ultimately laced with genuine care. All while her attitude screams “you should know better than to fuck with me” to anyone else. I’m so excited to see more on-page as she embraces her monster. Oh, & I am yeeeaaarrrrning for more Connie, too! My girl! 💛 I just really want to see everybody in full form— RAGING. 👿 Especially with that ending. 🥲

This read is an easy one to get into, but I would consider it a bit of a slow start. The builder book, 1 of 3, you know. But by the end, I’m definitely left wanting more. In a good way! 😏 I really can’t say more without getting spoiler-y. But I had a good time with this one. Even though my chest hurts rn. 🫠

10/10 no notes!

I loved all of the main characters and found myself giggling or crying (or blushing) the entire book!

I’m so excited for this series and highly recommend it.

It’s got vampires and witches and lots of depth. I’ll probably do a reread before book 2 and I am already looking forward to it.

Thank you to Ophelia Reign for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

"I was dangerous. I am dangerous. And I don't plan on changing anytime soon."

📚The Rundown: 📚
Rating: 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐
Spice Level: 3.5/5 🌶🌶🌶
Genre: Paranormal Dystopian fiction
Tropes: Found family, oppressive government, Assassin x Soldier, Enemies to lovers.

🚨Content / Trigger Warnings:🚨
Violence, psychological and emotional manipulation, trauma, On page open door sex (consensual), Possible grooming of a child (not on page, not even described, but I feel it was implied when events were revealed), Implication of SA (Not described, not explicitly stated but the story points to that in one of the Character's past).

📖The Story/Setting:📖

"…Frankly, humans taste terrible these days. Too much salt, too much protein."

This is book 1 of a trilogy and it is off to a VERY strong start! The Humans, Vampires, and Witches have been at War for over 300 years. Our Main Character Marzana (Marz) is a "retired" assassin who is trying to find absolution for the blood on her hands by assisting the newly turned young vampires in adjusting to life as a vampire. The world humans witches and vampires occupy now no longer has the boarders or climate we remember, and even though it does not have zombies, it does have abject poverty, military indoctrination, fascism, and betrayal. But even in these dire conditions, there is friendship, love, and hope.

In this world, All vampires awaken with a "gift"; an extra supernatural ability obtained once they are turned. Marzanna has one that is very unique.

👫Characters👫

Marzana (Marz)

"Watching centuries pass by does nothing but make you miserable."

Marz is going down as one of my favorite FMCs of all time. She is deeply complex, and layered with melancholy, a healthy dose of cynicism, kindness, and surprising softness. She is so well balanced and I love to see her discover truths, plan, and interact with the other characters. Her friendship with Constatine (Connie) is one of my favorite friendships to read about. Surviving the trauma of being turned, having the unique and invasive power she has, discovering betrayals and plots, all while trying to keep it together under the watchful eye of Alexander, her "Boss" makes her so compelling and very relatable.

Constantine (Connie)

"Seduction is a powerful tool when used the right way. Persuasion is an even stronger tools, especially if you can fool people into thinking it's only seduction."

Connie is a cold, stand-offish, somewhat solitary vampire, and very old. No one gets close to her, except for Marz. Their friendship has seen them both through a lot of difficult times, but they always have each other to lean on.

My Reading Experience
🤔
I highly recommend this book if you want a character driven story, because the characters really shine in this book, even the "side" characters; honestly I struggle to classify any of these characters as "side" characters; they are all vital to the story and each other's development.

Ophelia's world building is so much fun, so easy to read, and fun to jump into. The pacing was excellent to me, there was action or development throughout the book and it kept me engaged the whole time.

I also love the way we can make parallels between the way certain groups of people are treated today, and the way Witches and Vampires are treated and used. I think two quotes sum it up wonderfully:

"Witches aren't people here, and human rights were for humans in their eyes."

"For a Country that hates to see witches living their lives, they sure love to use the weapons they create."

What I liked😊
· The friendship between Connie and Marz is my favorite thing ever.
· The feminine rage
· Bunny ❤
· The growth of Emmett!
· Marz learning about her past
· The entire world, the setting, the buildup to the main event/standoff.

What I didn't Like 🙁
· Alexander. That is all!

🌟Standout Moments 🌟

****Light spoilers ahead!****

Favorite dynamic:
Connie X Marz; Best BFFs in Book History.
Benny X Connie
Bunny X Marz

Scene that lingered:
The Entire last 20 pages. I will never forgive Ophelia for the way she threw my emotions in the air and waved them like she just don't care.

Favorite Quote:
Bunny to Marzana: "You're too good for this world, Marzana Popov. No Matter what evil you harbor. You. Are. Good."

Final Thoughts
I cannot WAIT for the next installment. This book gave me everything I needed; Black Vampires, Best friends, found family, reclaimed power, Dystopian desolation, fighting against fascism, action, and good pacing.

3.75 🌟

I was frothing at the mouth to read this based on artwork & vibes alone for MONTHS, and it was such a fun read.

We've got witches, vampires and magic in a future dystopian post war world setting. There's a unique magic system in place regarding how vampires develop their powers and a lot of political intrigue in the world building that I absolutely cannot wait to see develop out in the secondary installment. The last two percent of the book had me bawling my eyes out, please come console me if/when you all read this. I'm not okay 😭

I'm obsessed with how of putting Bunny is made to be when witnessing the use of her powers- she very quickly became my favorite character. I'm also just here to say... Marzana, the woman that you are 🫰🏻💅🏻

Enjoy a bunch of my favorite quotes to sum up what really drew me in 🫶🏻

• • •

"I never wanted to hurt anyone. I never wanted to be what they made me to be. They just never gave me a chance."

"Like the earth is screaming for the slate to be wiped clean, but humans are fighting Mother Nature for control. I can't think about it too long, it I will stand in this spot for days, unable to stop." Realest shit I've ever read tbh- something like this comes out of my mouth once a week bare minimum iykyk.

"But you are so very naive to think you aren't manipulated every day from the small pieces of propaganda you are fed." "When you control the narrative, you control the mindsets of the people who are engaged with whatever you're putting out." PERIOD ! The commentary that links to today's issues is fantastic. Never forget that reading is political.

"I'd rather burn for eternity in whatever hell awaits me than witness the slaughter of more of my friends."

"Monsters need to stick together."

"Hope is being this sad but still wanting to be better." Why am I sobbing? 😭 Too relatable.

"I'll be a monster one more time, but this time for my own reasons."

I had the absolute pleasure and privilege of being one of the ARC readers for Before We Burn by @authoropheliareigns 🔥

Can I instantly fall in love with the FMC, the drama, and the tension from the very first pages? Hell yes — especially when she’s a badass vampire.

Can an author make you gasp out loud with plot twists so intense you need to grip your seat? Absolutely, if it’s Ophelia 🖤

I fell in love with Marzana (the name!! 🔥) right from the start: self-control at 100%, kind and caring despite the heavy past constantly hanging over her head. And of course, she gets the funny, cute, caring guy. Beautifully written.

And Constantine… all I can say is: I wanna be her when I grow up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The chemistry between her and Benny? Mouth-watering.

The characters are so well written I can't wait to know them better!

And the hot scenes? So steamy I need to wipe the screen of my phone while writing this. 🥵

This book is incredibly engaging and easy to read, while still delivering a complex and layered story. Past trauma, lies, deception, political manipulation — it has everything. I was gasping, laughing, and there was even my classic “nonono, please no” moment… and maybe a few tears too.

To put it simply: set in a dystopian future, a rising political power is trying to take over using witches, vampires, and werewolves. Slowly uncovering the truth about themselves and their history, this vampire/human version of Scooby and the gang (sorry, but the minivans are everything🤣 ) might just be the ones to start a revolution.

And in the words of the author: “It’s political, it’s violent, but every revolution is."

❗ As always, please check the trigger warnings before diving in — and go pre-order Before We Burn 🔥

I honestly don't know where to start... this book was just amazing simple as that 😭😭

I'm upset it took me 5 days to finish because I was being pulled every which direction every single day!

The lore, the connections, the tension, I was here for it allllll!!
I was so glad to see Nadiya and Ciro make an appearance!! I've missed them tremendously and seeing them here made me incredibly happy!

I loved the political aspects here! I'm not gonna say too much because I fear I'll spoil it and I definitely don't want to do that cause y'all not about to cuss me out 😂

The Characters:
Marzana: omgggg you know how you have that one friend who always has to be strong on the outside but you know inside, she just wants love and affection as much as everyone else? That was Marz to me! I felt for her so much because I could relate to her in so many ways!! (I wish I could say we were both vampires.. but I'm just a human 🙁) but I truly, truly loved her character with my whole heart!!

Everett: I won't lie at first he annoyed me because sir??? But he won me very quickly lmaoo so did Benny!!

Bunny: Outside of Marzana ofc, Bunny was probably one of my faves! She was so different/off to everyone in the story and it somehow made her stand out to me even more.

Connie: I know a baddie when I read one! That's it that's all!!

I literally can't wait for book two!! I'm beyond excited to see how the story progresses from here!

If you're looking for a paranormal, dystopian read with romance aspects, black witches and vampires, and secret identities - look no further!!

I’ve been anticipating this ARC for months! I am grateful to have the opportunity to read and review it. This is my honest review.

Where do I begin? I’ve so much to say.

Let’s start with the romance. While they move quickly for the short time they all spend together, it makes sense within the context of the vampire lore. I’m not mad at it. The smut was good too. Spicy, emotionally intimate, and didn’t overshadow the plot. Very well done.

The characters are so diverse! Each character is unique in their own special way. Even the side characters. I have never seen anyone write about a vampire with they/them pronouns before. Everyone stands out! It adds to the found family aspect of the book.

I enjoyed uncovering the backstories and motivations of everyone as the story progressed. I must say, I wish I had a little more time with some folks in the story, as we don’t always see things from their perspectives unless Marz is reading their mind, and she doesn’t read all their minds, though I understand that choice was likely intentional. And for that reason, I like the book even more.

The ending was expected…yet unexpected at the same time. I can’t explain here. I’m still processing it all. Lol I just finished the book moments before writing this review.

Just go pre order the book and find out for yourself! I quite enjoyed this book and will be recommending it in my book club this fall when it’s released.

there was a lot to this story that i really truly enjoyed. i really like marz a lot as the fmc. i loved her thought processes, her backstory, how she interacted with other characters. she was truly incredible and probably my favorite part of the entire thing.

i loved the concept of the plot and thought it was really unique and an interesting story in the paranormal world. i got…really confused on quite a bit, though. it felt like things were said or told to us that i was expected to just know or recognize without further explanation. like what exactly is a soul tie? why did onyx sacrifice his pack and what would his son have done to him? how/why do the council have human kin?

i dont need to be explicitly told every little detail, but it felt like i was missing information that wasnt fleshed out.

i also wasn’t a super big fan of the romance, unfortunately. it moved a little quickly from enemies to being very wrapped up in each other and caring when they really hadn’t had much time to be feeling that strongly.

i think this story really shines with the characters individually. particularly with bunny and constantine. i loved every bit of time these two had on the pages and couldn’t wait for more.

even though this didn’t quite land for me, im def interested in what happens next in the series !!

Humans , vampires and witches have been at war for over 300 years. This book is set in a dystopian post war world . Our main FMC Marzana is a trained assasin who has done many bad things and wants to absolve herself of her sins.

She takes a job at Bloodlust Academy assisting newly turned vampires (Bloodlings) and helping them adjust to their new immortal life. But when humans take over the academy and kidnap young vampires., MARZANA takes it upon
herself to set out for revenge

In this world, all vampires have a unique gift.

Marzana is no exception to the rule.

I WILL ADMIT THIS BOOK WAS SLOW GOING AT FIRST . AFTER HALFWAY I WAS GRIPPED. THE LAST 10% I WAS SHOUTING AT MY KINDLE.

I LOVE THE CHARACTERS. MARZ IS A COMPLETE BADASS, AND I LOVE HOW EVERETT BRINGS OUT HER SOFTER SIDE. EVERETT I WASNT SURE ABOUT AT FIRST BUT HE PROVED HIMSELF WHEN IT MATTERED

BUNNY IS SO COOL AND PROBABLY MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER

CONNIE IS JUST A QUEEN !!

IF YOURE LOOKING FOR A POST WAR DYSTOPIAN PARANOMAL READ WITH STRONG BLACK CHARACTERS THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU 100%. IT HAS A NICE AMOUNT OF SPICE BUT IT DOESNT TAKE OVER THE PLOT

dystopian world

vampire academy setting

Paranormal monsters

I loooooooved this book. Currently trying to decide how many copies I need for my shelf!

Okay so let’s get into it. Our FMC, Marzana, is a bad ass ex-assassin turned teacher. Once a name whispered in fear, now she helps new vampires cope with their new abilities. Some of which are unique and go beyond the typical speed and strength. By all accounts it seems like her assassin days are behind her but some new students have Marz asking questions and feeling a bit like something is coming.

Everett is our unexpected MMC who is a member of the military. During a raid on the school, Everett steps in to save Marzana’s life. Taking a bullet meant for her because he thought she was fine as hell. I’m sorry but that’s so fucking hot 🥵. And also he’s not wrong, she is drop dead gorgeous. Anyway, so Marz is like well damn he saved my life I should save his and that’s how our FMC and MMC find each other but this isn’t a love story. This is a paranormal dystopian story about found family, enemies to lovers, unexpected alliances, & secret identities.

Ok so… we got a witch, vampire, and human war. And it’s INTENSE.

There’s a whole human army dedicated to taking out witches and vampires. They are fueled by hatred and the need to eradicate the witches and vampires. They've got crazy complicated weapons. Like, UV weapons for the vampires.

Then there’s a quaint little school where Marz works where she helps newly turned vampires adjust and become good, well-functioning vampires who are in tune with their feelings. They figure out what their vampiric skills are and how to use them and how to be good vampiric citizens. Spooooooky.

So, what happens when a human from the army and Marz who teaches at the school cross paths?

You get fantastic world building, a unique take on vampires, witch lore, and other magical elements. I was literally going OH MY GOOOOOOOOD every few chapters with action, adventure, tension, and twists that were OUTSTANDING!

The ending had my jaw on the ground and clicking my Kindle like no, there has to be more. Give me more RIGHT NOW.

🔥Monsters need to stick together.🔥

I genuinely couldn't put this book down. A dark dystopian story with mental health rep, found family, secret identities and a whole bunch of hot ass vampires, witches and humans?! I WAS SO SAT the entire time.

I absolutely LOVE Marzana and Connie, like with a passion. These are some of my favorite characters I've read. Marz's strength and no nonsense attitude, Connie is so damn funny and dangerous. The back stories for all the characters are so heartbreaking and the the way they're all such unlikely allies is the best part. And the plot twists in this???? My jaw was on the floor 🙌 you all know I love to be genuinely shocked from a twist. There were a few of them and I was loving every single one. With the way this ended, I am simultaneously nervous and so ready to see how the next book plays out. Highly recommend this one, immediately add to the tbr.

This book was such a tease, I kept thinking we were getting a war but it will happen

I love that Marzana treats Bunny with kindness especially as everyone else sees the vamp child as "offputting". I wish we had more backstory for Bunny but it wouldn't be possible as when you turn vamp you lose your human memories. Nevertheless, Bunny was a fun insertion into the narrative, really the entire reason that Marzana was propelled into changing from being an educator into a leader.

Marzana is an emotional mess which is completely understandable given what happened so I was just happy to be along for the ride. I think it will be interesting to see her growth further in the next book especially as she's already opened herself up to friendship and love in this one.

Everett may be our love interest but I'm still getting off vibes, in my heart I feel a plot twist coming and I think it will be at his hands that we see destruction.

Overall, a fun thrill of a read!

Thank you to the author for the ARC! So grateful fr 🖤

Alright so first of all…. Bunny is my lil baby. Period. She brought me such deep levels of joy, you won’t understand until you’ve read it. Also VERY deeply in love with Marz and Constantine… like get the rings.

Now there were some things I wasn’t quite satisfied with— It felt like it could’ve been fleshed out just a bit better, and the pacing felt a little off to me for something that is the start of a series. Regardless of that though, the dynamics between everyone and depths of the characters, the bonds, the trauma healing, the world build and magic system, BLACK VAMPIRES? just…. Yeah. I’m sat, antsy for the next one, and also heartbroken because that last 10% went 0-100. I can’t go into too much detail without spoilers, but it was a good timeee chile. 4/5 stars.

Ophelia is truly a gem and I need the second book IMMEDIATELYYYY.

Wow!!! I really cannot wait for the second book. This was so well written, the world building phenomenal. The characters and development written beautifully. The connections to characters, turns and plot twists were outstanding.
The ending absolutely perfect; I am left dangling from the cliff. We have a supernatural story here with vampires, wolves, witches, and humans. Complicated history and disastrous futures. I never saw that ending coming and I can’t even imagine what it all means for the next book. But I’m ready!!
This is a story of a former assassin turned teacher to new vampires, the humans are hunting them all to rid the world of the vampire race. Witches are helping g the humans and we find out that the, what is thought to be extinct wolves are also helping them. What I Marz (the lead FMC) to do but try and save as many as she can.

I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGSSSSS AND I NEED BOOK 2 ASAP. That ending was probably the most stressful yet iconic cliffhanger I could think of. Literal goosebumps reading the closing scene.
Not many reads make me say “I’d slap my momma” but this one is a read that will literally have you saying yeahhhh my momma can get slapped🤣.
Bunny scared me but was so intriguing. The found family trope in BWB literally had my heart gushing (real ghetto of me) and a SLUTTY CHAIN???! I demand a clawfoot bathtub be installed in my bathroom immediately.
Idk idk, this vampire dystopian clusterF was everything you need in a read and going even deeper into the complexities of society today and trauma…10s across the board. I said what I said.

4.25 ⭐️ - This book hooked me from the very first page and never let go. ARC Read.

With witches, vampires, betrayal, lies, feminine rage, and plenty of twists, this story had everything I wanted in a fantasy read. The world was immersive, the stakes kept getting higher, and I was completely invested in seeing how everything would unfold.

I absolutely loved the characters, especially Bunny, who quickly became a favourite. Watching everyone navigate the danger, secrets, and shifting alliances kept me turning the pages, and I was constantly wondering what would happen next.

The atmosphere was dark and addictive, the tension built beautifully throughout, and the ending has me counting down until book two. I can’t wait to dive back into this world!

Honestly, the male vulnerability and FMC’s in this book were iconic.

This story was everything I needed it to be. A quick & bingeable read with Vampires vs witches vs humans vs corrupt leaders. It really scratched the political intrigue itch as well.

Everett and the vulnerability we see from him is something I would love to see in all MMCs. The ability to be tough, protect those he loves, but also not be ashamed to break down. Perfect.

The women in this book, Marz, Connie & Bunny are the perfect feminine rage trio and I couldn’t get enough of them.

Thank you so much to Ophelia for the ARC of Before We Burn! ✨🔥

This book hooked me from the very beginning and did not let go. We’ve got witches, vampires, betrayal, lies, feminine rage, and so much more woven into the story perfectly. I absolutely loved the characters — especially Bunny 🖤 — and I was so invested in following their journey the entire time.

The atmosphere was addictive, the tension kept building, and there were so many moments that had me desperate to know what would happen next. I already cannot wait to see what book 2 will bring!

Ophelia Reign sucked me in with this one.
There was mental health representation, hot vampires (we know how I feel about vampires), found family, and passion. Each character holds you down and makes you feel something:
—Bunny gets treated with a gentle hand by MarZ, do I want more of Bunny? Yes, yes I do.
—Marz is pissed off, determined but willing to change (just a little)
— Evertt is a guy on a mission. He needs answers (even if he gave me weirdo vibes)
