#1 New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Publisher's Weekly, and Amazon Charts bestselling author Freida McFadden is a practicing physician specializing in brain injury who has penned multiple Kindle bestselling psychological thrillers and medical humor novels. She lives with her family and possessed cat in a centuries-old three-story home overlooking the ocean, with staircases that creak and moan with each step, and nobody could hear you if you scream. Unless you scream really loudly, maybe.
Note that I am maxed out on friends, so I apologize in advance that I can't friend anyone back!
Both The Housemaid's Secret and The Housemaid is Watching plunge readers into the unsettling undercurrents of domestic life, where secrets lurk beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary households. Yet, each book approaches this theme with a unique style and tone, delivering distinctly different reading experiences.
The Housemaid's Secret is a classic mystery that thrives on intrigue and suspense. Set in a grand manor, the story revolves around a seemingly flawless family concealing a dark past. The arrival of a new housemaid, who harbors her own hidden motives, disrupts the fragile equilibrium of the household. The author expertly builds a sense of claustrophobia, trapping readers within the manor's walls alongside the characters. The narrative focuses on unraveling a long-buried secret, with a strong emphasis on the "whodunnit" aspect, keeping readers guessing until the very end.
In contrast, The Housemaid is Watching leans into psychological horror. It follows a young woman who grows increasingly suspicious of her new housemaid, spiraling into paranoia and madness. The author crafts a pervasive sense of unease through the protagonist's unreliable perceptions and the eerie, oppressive atmosphere of the house. The story delves into the psychological toll of fear and mistrust, blurring the boundaries between reality and delusion, leaving readers questioning what is real.
While both novels explore themes of secrets and deception, The Housemaid's Secret adheres to a more traditional mystery framework, centered on solving a crime. The Housemaid is Watching, however, offers a more psychologically intense and unsettling journey, delving into the darker aspects of human nature and the corrosive effects of paranoia. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on whether the reader prefers a classic mystery or a chilling psychological thriller.
My Quick Review: I bought these books after hearing and seeing all the hype. Not my typical read, but I took a deep breath and dived right in. 🤿
I'd been told these books were easy reads. Most definitely. I smashed them out fairly quickly. ⏩️⏩️⏩️
Part of the hype that I'd seen was that these books are full of twists. And when you think you've figured it out, there's another twist that you don't see coming and it's mindblowing. 🤯 This is true, to a point. I wasn't completely gobsmacked like I was expecting to be. I saw some of it coming, and other twists I was kinda close to guessing. But as someone who typically sees things coming in books, movies and TV shows, dont feel bad if you didn't. It can actually be slightly annoying, as it takes a lot for me to be genuinely shocked and surprised. 😩
I also found there was a little bit of repetition within the books. Sometimes the exact same phrases, sometimes written differently but the point had already been made earlier. Again, more of a me issue than anything. 🫠
Besides these few little niggles, the stories were actually pretty good. I did end up enjoying them more than I had expected to. Out of the three and a half books (the third is a very short novella), I definitely preferred the first two. Overall, a fun and easy read. 😁
I ain’t gonna lie, we gotta give McFadden her props. This series was completely trash. She’s been consistently writing trash, let’s give the queen of popcorn thrillers her props.
- If McFadden has a million haters, I'm one of them - If McFadden has 5 haters, I'm one of them - If McFadden has 1 hater, that one is me - If McFadden has no haters, I'm no longer alive
All of her books follow the same script, and I lose brain cells that I didn’t even know I had each time I read one of her books. This series made my blood pressure high, like how does McFadden have a fanbase. A 5 year old can write better than her. Twist after twist which makes absolutely no sense and negates 99% of the plot. I’m fully convinced she uses ChatGPT to write her books, there’s no other way to write this many repetitive “books”
The is the Third book in a series. The first book is the best in the series because combines shocking situations and events with some very dark humor. This book lack the humor the story opens with Milly and Enzo buying a house and there are no blinds in the house. Mc Fadden seems like she could have written all kinds of scenarios about this ^ but she just forgets about it. And makes the living “on Long Island” joke enough but a house without blinds. (And who hasn’t been there at some point) forgotten. She then brings in the children which is rough and she tries to carry the outrage but it falls flat a bit because it gets confusing at the end. In this series anyone maybe murderous for a variety of reasons. Not as good as the first book,
5 stars First book: perfect and was just as intriguing as never lie
4.5 stars 2nd book: not as good as first, but really liked our main characters growth since the first. Was somewhat predictable but still left u unsure of what exactly was going on.
4 stars for 2.5: takes place between each installment and was a nice short story.
3 stars or 3.5 for 3rd and last: I’m sad to say I wasn’t impressed or excited with this book. I wish I could say it was just my mood at the time, but I agree with what others may say and that there were indeed many boring elongated parts that weren’t needed. I found myself wanting to skip over sections. I would still read it because it wraps up people’s stories but not most important to rush to. Should’ve been duology
I really enjoyed how their hidden secrets were gradually revealed.
However, I didn’t like the ending—especially how Andrew’s death was simply dismissed as an accident. It felt unrealistic, considering his parents had the resources to investigate and uncover the truth. I also suspect that Robert and Evelyn were hiding something.
Overall, the book was excellent. The suspense kept me engaged from start to finish.

The Housemaid, The Housemaid’s Secret, The Housemaid Is Watching. I enjoyed all three of the books although for me, by the third book things got a bit predictable. These aren’t great literature but that is not the intent. They are fun, quick reads that gets you to root for the housemaid and hiss at those who cross her. So, mission accomplished. Can’t wait to see the movie!
Absolutely ate this series up!!! Easy & entertaining read with crazy plot twists!! Immediately bought the following book after I was done with the first one!! So excited for the movie adaptation with Sydney Sweeney.
The 1st and the last were my favorites amongst the 3. The chemistry between the protagonist and her partner is beautifully showcased. It kept me holding after completing 1/2 of the book till the end. over-all a good read.
Me parecen increíbles, aunque al principio van un poco lentos al final te hacen darle la vuelta a tu propio cerebro, recomendadisimo para la gente a la que le gusten los libros de misterio.
Such a great series, once I picked the first book up I couldn’t put it back down. I got that feeling with every book in the series and look forward to reading more of her books.
So good you won’t be able to put down. I loved the first one The Housemaid and The housemaids Secret. a lot. The only one i wasn’t sure about was The Housemaid is Watching.
My sister and Emily recommended this book, it was riveting and I could not stop reading it. The twist was a surprise and I will continue to read her books.
