Unbreakable: The Remarkable True Story of a Holocaust Survivor's Six-Year Journey from Nazi Labor Camps to Buchenwald

Rate this book
Two fathers. One day. Inside one of history’s darkest places.

On April 17, 1945, inside Buchenwald, a young man lay barely alive after six years of unimaginable hardship. Just beyond the gates, an American combat medic arrived with the liberating forces—stepping into a world that defied comprehension.

They never met.
Nearly eighty years later… their sons did.

Two years later, that responsibility became Unbreakable.

Unbreakable tells the true story of Rafal Kantor, a Polish teenager forced from his home and pushed through ghettos, deportations, and Nazi labor camps before arriving at Buchenwald. Drawn from Rafal’s written testimony, this is a story of endurance in its most human form—of small choices, fragile hope, and the will to live when everything familiar has been stolen.

This is not just a book—it is a memory someone fought to keep.

Readers are
“This felt like something that could have belonged to my own family.”
“This reminded me how many others were never told.”

You are not just reading his story—you are helping carry it forward.

If you were moved by The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Night, or We Were the Lucky Ones, Unbreakable offers a deeply personal true story of Holocaust survival, loss, and the courage to live again.

“A literary act of remembrance that breaks your heart—and then gives you the courage to carry the story forward.”
—Jackie Congedo, CEO, Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center

“Unbreakable is not just a book—it’s a warning, a memory, and a call to never look away.”
—Melissa Hunter, author of All She Lost

Extremely Well Written Account of a Holocaust Survivor

A deeply disturbing yet accurate account of one man’s harrowing journey and survival through the Holocaust as a young Jewish man in Poland. The book is an extremely well written and accurate. This book covers the life of a young Polish Jew, and his family, from the early days of the war through liberation and relocation to the USA with compassion, honesty and accuracy about the absolute devastation that the Shoah inflicted.

Wow

My heart breaks for all the people who survived but lost their families. This book draws you into the horrors of the holocaust that only the ones who experienced it can truly understand. The will to survive without losing all hope is remarkable. The story of Rafal and his family, is sadly repeated for millions of families who went through this nightmare. I'm stunned. Truly stunned. A must read.

A fascinating story that reminded me of The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom and The Diary of Anne Frank. To see the Holocaust through the eyes of someone who was around my age when he experienced it makes it a little more real. I’ll never be able to comprehend the horrors the Jews endured, but this book definitely made an impression that I’ll not forget anytime soon.

One of the finest and most detailed memoir that I have ever read! I cannot say that I enjoyed the read but it was spectacular in that I felt like I was there and living this most hideous life. Many kudos to the author who wrote a book for the ages!! Outstanding!!!

I enjoy reading history but I will need to take a break and read something uplifting after this.

Simply unforgettable

This is, in this day and age, a story that is almost too horrific to be true. At the same time, so graphically accurate. Thank you for sharing Rafal Kantor’s story so that history will not repeat itself!

Sad

I say sad because my heart broke. I was just a young girl when the war was happening totally unaware of what was happening to the people the Germans were killing. This account of facts is mind blowing. I will never understand why!

Amazing story!

I read this in 2 days. I could not put it down. I can not imagine anyone surviving this horror. I am amazed how this happened and the world did not notice.
