It's difficult to know for whom this book is intended.

The chapters on formal dress, the difference between white tie and black tie, would already be known by those who move in the kinds of circles that don such apparel. The general reader will not be interested.

The chapters on table laying and the correct use of cutlery are more useful, though Hanson is limited in what he can cover. Many of his points on such topics as the correct way to eat spaghetti and dissecting various fruits prior to their consumption are better suited to the medium of his YouTube videos.

I would have liked more on the social history of food preparation and consumption – we get glimpses of this, e.g. the reason for the no elbows on table rule.

A charming book, but I think it is probably more rewarding seeking out Hanson's videos on YouTube.
