3 "very meh" and disappointed stars. While I did read the previous mystery, this one was a big miss for me - way too many characters, a very messy plot and way, way, way too much focus on addiction and recovery, which can get awfully preachy and tedious to those without such issues. I only really liked the Cali road trip parts, which were fun and authentic, so gave a star for that and also liked the tie in to the tragic "Ghost Ship" fire in Oakland. I do enjoy the author & have loved a lot of her back-list, esp. "Nina Hill" but I won't be reading any more of these, sigh...

Deadly Does It is the sequel to Abbi Waxman’s 2025 book One Death at a Time.
This was another fun mystery full of witty banter and controlled chaos featuring Gen Zer Mason and ex-actress turned lawyer Julia Mann, along with a colorful cast of supporting characters.
Mason’s AA sponsor Alexa has been receiving threating letters and strange things have been happing to her and those around her. First a fashion show she’s organized is sabotaged by falling giant vegetables, and then attendees of a new restaurant’s opening night come down with food poisoning.
Alexa hires Julia and Mason to get to the bottom of what’s going on. It’s possible the threats have something to do with her checkered, pre-rehab past, but Alexa’s memory of those days are pretty spotty.
Julia and Mason travel to the Bay Area and the Central Coast for their detective work, and we get to meet Mason’s family during their travels.
This isn’t a fast-paced thriller, but it is a smart and insightful mystery with lots of warmth, heart, and humor. It’s helpful to read One Death at a Time before Deadly Does it, but it’s not 100% necessary.

The second book in the Mason & Mann mysteries series showcases the sensational chemistry of the core group of characters with a witty and fast-paced story.
The unusual sleuthing duo in this series is a hoot, and their banter is pure gold. Mason and Julia have a relationship that thrives on bickering and sarcasm. Their dynamic is humorous, but warm, and they truly care about each other. As a former film star and ex-con turned lawyer, Julia provides the strategic legal intellect, while Mason is the resourceful and fast-talking ground investigator. Both are recovering alcoholics in AA, and this mystery has them investigating threats toward Mason's sponsor.
However, it’s the secondary characters who nearly steal the show in this one. They are a quirky, tightly knit found family who mostly handle the tech and domestic needs of the crew. There's a new addition in Teddy, an experienced PI who mentors Mason, and I really enjoyed his character. The group, too, is in recovery, and everyone shares a deep bond, acceptance, and understanding because of that. The book takes a realistic but compassionate look at addiction and life in recovery.
The mystery is interesting, and it takes Mason and Julia on a road trip, which was fun. I did guess the culprit, but that didn't lessen my enjoyment, as I'm there first for the characters and to see them work the case. This is such a charming and entertaining group to spend time with.
Patti Murin does a sensational job with the audiobook narration. Her comedic timing and energy are perfect for the funny dialogue. She makes every character come to life, but I particularly enjoy her portrayal of Julia. Her ability to pivot between all of the wildly different personalities in each scene is impressive. Highly recommend this one on audiobook!

Both Mason and Julia are smart, funny and sarcastic, each with a colorful past. She is much younger than Mann, yet shares many of her qualities.

An excellent second book in the Mann & Mason series that does a great job of integrating & reminding you of all the necessary “stuff” in the beginning and onward (meaning a reread isn’t mandatory) without clunky info dumps. It just flows!
Another case to solve, still close to home, and all the fun and eclectic characters are back.. plus new ones too! Little more backstory here for some, some depth and layers and flirting there, and a whole lot of WTF danger in the middle. Sleuthing and clue-ing and gathering up and down California while Mason settles into herself a bit more with every step.
It’s an excellent story and arc from beginning to end BUT I will admit that the perpetrator is fairly obvious, the clues too glaring. That didn’t diminish my enjoyment though. The characters and their interactions are so strong that I was happy to go along for the ride anyway.
I did have one actual complaint about the baffling choice of a minor character, it really made no sense, but let’s avoid spoilers. Just had to make a note and come back to discuss after you read the book too.
Overall, though, an excellent follow-up and I’m already clamoring for more from this series.

3.5.5. Just like On Death at a Time I really enjoyed the banter and wit in this book. The characters were likable and the humor brought a lighthearted-ness that is often missing from book like this!
It took me a few chapters for me to warm up into the book but that is a me problem, not a writing issue.

I really enjoy Abbi Waxman's particular brand of charm: witty banter, warm and complicated characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and a little bit of controlled chaos. *Deadly Does It*, the second book in the Mason & Mann Mysteries, delivers all of that while expanding the world of the series across modern California.
Mason and Julia are back, this time investigating threatening letters and escalating harassment directed at Mason's AA sponsor, Alexa. What begins as a mystery involving Alexa's past quickly becomes much more dangerous, taking the team from the Bay Area to the Central Coast and bringing in more of the colorful characters who make this series so much fun.
The mystery itself is enjoyable, although I did figure out the general direction of the solution fairly early. That didn't diminish my enjoyment, though. The characters and their relationships are strong enough that I was happy to go along for the ride. There are plenty of clues, twists, danger, and WTF moments, but the real appeal for me is watching this eclectic group of people interact.
I especially enjoy the relationship between Gen Z Mason and Julia, a former famous actress, convicted murderer, and now lawyer. Their relationship is difficult to categorize: not quite family, not exactly friends, but something that feels very real and increasingly meaningful. I also enjoyed getting to know Mason's family and seeing more of the supporting characters, including Archie, who I would happily have seen more of in this installment.
This book does meander a bit in the middle, but not in a way that bothered me much. Some of those quieter sections don't necessarily move the mystery forward, but they do give us more of the characters, their histories, and their relationships. And I am always willing to spend more time with a well-written cast of characters.
I also appreciated how Waxman handles the series backstory. While I think *One Death at a Time* is worth reading, this book does a good job of giving readers the information they need without clunky exposition or requiring a reread.
Overall, this is a smart, warm, funny mystery with a genuinely enjoyable cast of characters. Abbi Waxman clearly understands how to balance humor, heart, character development, and a mystery that keeps the story moving.

I don't know if I have the right words to describe how phenomenal Abbi Waxman's "Mason & Mann Mystery" novels are. A year ago, I begged for more. The unholy cross between the Matthew Scudder novels of Lawrence Block, the Spellman books by Lisa Lutz and a hundred other classic detective novels and shows with a band of misfits that are beyond perfect. Not only do we get more banter between Mason and Julia...we get more Claudia, more Will, more Phil. We get a new character, Teddy. We get more of Mason and her family. I love that the characters have to deal with everything they deal with...AND sobriety. I might not be an addict (I'm not even that much of a drinker) but there is a certain level of "realness" (a word I'm inventing) to how they have to navigate their lives.
All of this combined with the expanded setting of modern (and past) California. In all it's glory, glitter, glamour and warts. Waxman is clearly enjoying what she's writing - maybe more than she ever has before - and it shows on the page. It is littered with laugh-out-loud moments, tender bits and deep character development. Plus a fun mystery that...yeah...I'd kind of guessed at what was going on, but it was fun to watch the characters get there.
It is an almost perfect book. I felt it needed more Archie, but maybe we'll get there in a third installment. I also felt that while I'd figured out the mystery earlier, the characters sort of figure it all out right at once and I got the feeling that Waxman had maybe written herself into a corner and had to figure a way out. It meanders a bit in the middle - not in a bad way (gods no - like the first book, there are portions that don't truly advance the plot too much that are, nevertheless, delightful for what they reveal about the other characters).
This book series is now an auto-buy for me. I recommend them to anyone who loves fun, mysteries that are kinda "feel good" and don't hesitate to show the world as it really is. 4.75 stars (mostly because I deperately wanted more of Archie) - rounded up for GR. EXTREMELY recommended.

This is the second book in the Mason & Mann Mysteries, but if like me, you missed the first book, worry not! The author does a great job of giving the reader plenty of backstory on the characters, so you don’t feel lost. Mason and Julia have an interesting relationship, not quite family, not really friends, but somewhere in-between. I enjoyed the interaction and banter between them, as well as all the secondary characters, including Mason’s family. The story takes lots of twists and turns, which left me thinking I knew who the villain was, but then had me second-guessing myself on more than one occasion. I was totally invested in this story and loved the ending! As I mentioned, I didn’t read the first book, but it is now on my TBR and I will definitely be on the lookout for the next installment of the series!

Abbi Waxman does it again! If you enjoy Catherine Mack or Benjamin Stevenson, and you like a bantery hilarious book that also just so happen to have a mystery involved, you need to read this series. While I think this edition would work as a stand alone, I highly recommend you add the first in the series, One Death at a Time, which was one of my favorite mysteries last year.
Mason and Julia are back and this time helping Mason's sponsor Alexa. Alexa's past has come back to haunt her, and she is getting typewritten anonymous threatening letters and someone is going after her sponsees. Mason has agreed to help and has enlisted Julia's help.
I really love the relationship between Gen Z Mason and her much older employer Julia, who was a golden age movie actor and unjustly accused and convicted of murdering her husband. She became a lawyer in prison so now she acts as the law in the duo and Mason acts as the amateur private investigator. The references to AA are perfect and exactly like they are in real life, some people who got sober during covid are zoom babies and now there are AA meetings literally every single hour of the day on zoom. It is one of the great things that came out of the pandemic.
I am 14 years sober in AA and the authenticity of Mason, Julia and Alexa's program is a huge reason why I love this series so much. But someone outside of recovery will still love the dialogue, the fast pace, and the blend of plot twists with deeper observations of human nature. I have already pre-ordered and I will re-read as a treat for myself when it is published.

This was an excellent mystery dealing with themes of loss and addition. Julia Mann, former movie star, recovering addict, and current lawyer takes a case for one of her employee's sponsor, Alexa. Mason, the sober employee, has been working as a sort of private eye/boots on the ground type employee to help Julia solve cases. The job seems almost too good to be true, as Julia provides housing, pays well, and serves lavish meals courtesy of Claudia, an associate of Julia's during their shared time in prison. This story was a testament to second chances - almost everyone had made mistakes in a prior life and is looking to be more productive. Alexa is now an event planner, but when pelted by giant vegetables at her meticulously planned fashion show, Alexa turns to Julia and Mason for help. Alexa is also receiving threatening letters but claims to have no idea what it's about. The story takes the reader both through this present day mystery and one in the past at the site of the Albatross fire. Alexa was there but feels that she wasn't involved and that the two cases are entirely unrelated. The investigators aren't so sure, as witnesses from Alexa's past place her there with potential impacts. The mystery will take the reader from the smoggy streets of LA to the rolling hills of Berkeley, both to track down witnesses and meet with Mason's family. Mason's dad has recently suffered a heart attack due to a junior faculty member trying to push him out, adding a side story to the already complex murder mystery. I liked the tone and storytelling, and it kept me turning the pages to see what happened next! I did not guess the murderer but it was a fitting ending. I'd definitely recommend to mystery fans!

As soon as I saw Deadly Does It was coming out, I had to add it to my TBR. I enjoyed reading book one in the series, One Death at a Time, last year, so it was a no-brainer. And I’m so glad that I got to read it.
Deadly Does It picks up six months after the end of One Death at a Time. As such, the main group of characters is still getting to know each other. The group consists of Hollywood movie-star-turned-lawyer Julia Mann; Mason is Mann’s AA sponsor and the team’s newest member. Then there is Will, the “brains” of the team, who is all about technology and behind-the-scenes research. Archie is Mann’s friend and lawyer and has a thing for Mason. And you can’t forget about Claudia, Mann’s housekeeper and chef. New to the group in this book is Teddy, Claudia’s on-again-off-again boyfriend and a freelance private investigator.
I had my suspicions about who the culprit was behind everything going on in the story. And I was partially right. My suspect was guilty, just not about what I thought they would be guilty of. In the end, there were multiple mysteries in Deadly Does It, and I only solved one before I even knew it was a mystery. For me, that’s a win! I hate reading a mystery and solving it before the end of the book. Throw some red herrings at me; try to confuse me. And that’s what Waxman did!
You could easily read Deadly Does It without having read One Death at a Time, but why would you? You would miss out on the growth of the relationship between Mann and Mason. Why would you want to miss out on that?

This book probably does assume you’ve read the first book to establish character dynamics, but if you haven’t or if you’ve forgotten, it does a good job of clueing you into what’s going on. And the book has a good balance between a complicated yet not too deep mystery, humor, and quirky characters. If you’re a fan of light mystery series like Catherine Mack’s Vacation Murders or Nita Prose’s Molly the Mad series, you will likely enjoy this series as well.
Patti Murin’s narration is particularly great with the humor, and at bringing the characters to life with distinct voices when each character is speaking. I alternated between the audio and the ebook though mostly stuck with the audio. Abbi Waxman is so sweet that when she heard I was denied on NetGalley she sent me a draft PDF so I even did a bit of simultaneous reading/listening which I don’t usually do but was fun here because I could see where slight word changes/edits had been made.

Mason and Julia are mystery solving colleagues even if they are a most unlikely pair. Julia is a beautiful and fashion-obsessed former movie star of a certain age, recovering alcoholic, lawyer and served prison time for the murder of her husband (which she claims she did not do). Mason is a tough 20 something recovering alcoholic who’s pretty, kinda punk, very smart and very stubborn. They teamed up in the 1st book in this series and continue their working relationship. There are other members of Julia’s team and they take on some cases for funding and some for fun…..mostly for people they care about. In this case, Alexa, Mason’s beloved and longtime AA sponsor is receiving threatening notes and they need to find out why and who is sending them. There are a fun set of side characters and some serious bits too…this case’s key is loosely based on the deadly 2016 Ghost Ship Warehouse fire in Oakland, CA. Although one of the bad guys is easily identifiable…it’s kinda a red herring and the guilty party is to so easily guessed. There are ongoing plots from the first book and some new info about the characters’ backgrounds. This is a fun series. Thanks to#netgalley for the ARC of this book.

I am absolutely THRILLED that Abbi Waxman continued this cozy mystery series because I adored the first book, and somehow the second one is even better?? Like… how??
This book was pure chaotic joy. It had me laughing, stressing, and fully invested all at once—but in that cozy, comforting way where you just never want to leave the story. It’s messy, funny, wholesome, and honestly just SUCH a good time from start to finish.
And the characters??? I love them SO much. Mason especially has my whole heart. She is such a cutie and I just want to wrap her in a blanket and protect her at all costs. Watching her reconnect with her family hit surprisingly deep, and you can’t help but feel for her. It made perfect sense that Mann took her under her wing—truly the best decision ever.

Thanks to PRH Audio for the gifted copy of Deadly Does It! This is book two in the Mann and Mason series by Abbi Waxman, and while you’ll definitely pick up on more if you start with book one, you can absolutely jump in here and have a great time. I’ve been a fan of Abbi’s since her Nina Hill days and I love the pivot into mystery. This one's even better than the last!
It has everything I want in a mystery: a wide cast of quirky characters (spanning every living adult generation), genuinely hilarious moments (there are flying giant vegetables, yes seriously), and a mystery that kept me guessing the whole time.
I hesitate to call it a cozy because there are some heavier aspects, but it never feels gritty. I do think cozy mystery readers would still really enjoy this.
Audio: The audiobook is narrated by Patti Murin, the absolute legend. I could listen to her read her grocery list. She brings so much emotion to the story and the way she uses different accents and tones really helps each character feel distinct. It’s such an easy, enjoyable listen and one I'd definitely recommend!

After solving their first case together, Natasha Mason and Julia Mann are helping Mason's AA sponsor, Alexa Rousso who has been receiving threatening letters. As they attempt to solve the case, they are drawn back to the Bay Area. In this novel, the reader learns more about Natasha's back story particularly her childhood. As they dig into Alexa's life and her journey to AA, the reader comes to know and appreciate the growth and character development that has brought them to the current position in life.
I enjoyed the character development of the supporting cast. Each of them bring something uniquely their own to the table to help the novel move forward. Additional characters are brought in to create a well developed cast and fully round out the novel. This mystery thriller had me turning the pages well into the night with its twists and turns. Well done. I can't wait to see where their next case takes them.

I love Mason's voice, both her irreverent humor and her clear-eyed self-knowledge (at least when it comes to her alcoholism--she's CRUSHING sobriety, by the way!). There was a lot of character development in this second installment of the Mason and Mann Mystery series. We explore Mason's familial context and relationships a lot more, as well as Julia's love life. The nuanced concepts of addiction and sobriety--and their inextricable link to each addict's past--are also further explored. Several of the secondary characters were also seriously fleshed out more, which makes for a more colorful cast. I felt that this book was richer in these areas and a bit slower plot-wise than the first book, but I don't think that is unwarranted, especially if we are going to be seeing more books in this series. For all that Mason is a realist, she's also hopeful for the future, and as a series fan I join her in hoping for more adventures to come for Mason and Mann.

The author does a great job developing her characters, both those on the investigative team as well as potential suspects and victims. The plot moves along at a brisk pace but takes the time for the scene-setting, both in the present and events in the past which are a lead in to current day crimes. The banter between some characters is wonderful.
Although the plot is a bit convoluted, it became obvious (to me) which way the story was going and why certain characters were acting strangely. Perhaps this is the author's intention, but it took a little fun out of it for me. I still enjoyed it, but wish certain details were a little less obvious to figure out.

I first fell in love with this author when I read The Bookish Life of Nina Hill. Since then, I’ve read several of her books and this newest novel is a sequel to her previous mystery novel, One Death At a Time.
Mason and Julia are back again to investigate strange happenings with Mason’s AA sponsor, Alexa. From threatening letters to falling giant vegetables at a fashion show to food poisoning during the opening night of a restaurant, Alexa is convinced that someone is out to get her and destroy her business.
With the same humor, wit and banter that is characteristic of her novels, Waxman has crafted another fun mystery with memorable characters. And a bonus for me is that it is set in the Bay Area and so many of the locations felt so familiar to me.

Mann and Mason are back! Julie, an Oscar winner, lawyer, and convicted murderer, and Natasha Mason are running a business that keeps getting Mason beat up. But when her AA sponsor is threatened, they start investigating what in shady past could lead to murder.
All these characters are in recovery, which is such an interesting place to work from. It’s a good mystery and there’s lots of sarcasm. I was disappointed in a decision Mason made at the very end, but overall a good sequel/probably book 2 in a series.

3.5 stars. Abbi Waxman will forever be an auto-buy author for me. I love her wacky plots, snarky dialogue and quirky characters. This one kicked off with a very strange event which led us into the new case. I can't say I got fully invested in this one for quite awhile. Once it picked up, it moved quickly and I enjoyed it.

A mystery to solve combined with some great humor. An AA sponsor is receiving scary notes and turns to one of her sponsees and her crime lawyer boss to take the case. A hazy past of drugs and petty crime follows the victim and might lead to the person writing the cryptic notes. A great read with many interesting characters.
