Tellement la DÉTENTE - une petite enquête, beaucoup de thé et de gâteau, un soupçon de romance mimi, un vrai bonheur !!! 🐑

Vraiment la BEST saga de cosy mystery ! Entre les perso hyper touchants, le petit village perdu dans la campagne anglaise avec ses habitants aux tempéraments bien particuliers, et les vrais mystères qui tiennent la route, c'est un carton plein !
Je trouve les enquêtes hyper plausibles même si loufoques et aucune ne se ressemble de tome en tome ! Ici encore je n'ai pas vraiment vu venir la résolution, j'ai été happée du début à la fin et j'ai même trouvé ça assez émouvant. On est dans une enquête de mort non résolue et j'ai adoré déterrer le passé auprès de Delilah et Samson (d'ailleurs s'ils pouvaient passer la seconde et tomber dans les bras l'un de l'autre ce serait top hihi).
Trop hâte de lire la suite !

Quite a nice surprise = this series gets better and better – every family has a skeleton in the closet, especially dysfunctional families – everyone has a secret, some secrets being darker than others – Samson and Delilah are reunited in an enquiry to discover the body of a dead girl 24 years ago, but has Livvy really died ?
Good plot, some great moments of laughter, I really enjoyed this third instalment in the Dales detectives mysteries, and cannot wait to reading the next one

Aah I do love a dales Mystery and this is a great one! Julia's books are a lovely holiday - a break from crime fiction and gritlit and a jaunt into the past even though the books are present day.
Her books make me smile - very Agatha Raisin style mixed with a bit of Marple and good old fashioned sleuthing. It's always good when a nice little village turns out to have a few secrets and this book doesn't just bring them out, it drags them kicking and screaming.
I think Delilah and Samson are getting to be really good characters now - even better now I know them even better than before. Their nuances, banter and relationship develops nicely and Bruncliffe seems even more real. I wish it was! (Skipton is a nice real alternative)
The investigation takes them to Leeds and the case of a solicitor asking about a will turns and twists in ways noone, least of all me, expected. I would just like to say that Tolpuddle made this novel for me. That gorgeous dog sounds mad but so lovely! This series gets better and better and there's a lot to like with this one.

I picked up this book thinking that despite the twee cover, it wasn't cosy crime as it's over 400 pages long. That's quite a length in the cosy crime stakes. But I was wrong. The book is none the worse for that. It isn't much better, however being the story of a fictitious town in the Yorkshire dales where every one knows every one else's business. I think that said fictitious town is based on Settle and it's one where everyone knows everyone else's business. Having lived in a small town on the Yorkshire/Durham borders, such can be true to an extent, but not completely.It's the 3rd in a series - I haven't read the earlier tales. The main characters are a female who runs a dating agency and a tenant in her building, a Metropolitan police officer in hiding who runs a detective agency. They are hired by a town solicitor to investigate a will which leaves half the estate to a daughter believed to have been dead for 20 odd years. However, no formal evidence of that death can be found. The truth becomes fairly clear but our unmatched couple take ages to find it out.. The one thing I found preposterous was that the deceased lady lived in a tied cottage and had been widowed for many years. I'm surprised she had an estate that would amount to enough to employ a detective agency.

Je vous ai dit que j'adore cette série ? Non ?!! J'ADORE cette série !
Pourtant rien de bien compliquée à l'intrigue, on trouve même assez facilement de dénouement de l'histoire avant la fin. Mais voilà, le style d'écriture, l'ambiance... Il y a un truc dans ces romans qui nous empêche de le lâcher. Résultat, hier soir à 1 h du matin (donc ce matin en fait), je me suis dit qu'il serait peut-être temps que j'aille dormir.
Dans ce tome on en apprend plus sur Samson, l'intrigue de fond commence à prendre forme et à se développer. La relation entre Samson et Delilah s'intensifie, on les connaît bien mieux et on se surprend à apprécier tous les personnages secondaires.
J'ai trouvé ce roman plus travaillé, plus poussé dans l'intrigue et ce final, il nous laisse sur notre faim ! On sent que le dénouement approche, doucement, mais sûrement. On savoure chaque instant, c'est un délice.
J'ai hâte de découvrir la suite. (je vous ai dit que j'adore cette série ??!)

Encore une lecture réjouissante qui se lit sur un rythme peinard et pour le plaisir de renouer avec des personnages qu'on ne présente plus et une enquête de routine : Samson et Delilah doivent retrouver un certificat de décès pour une affaire d'héritage, sauf qu'il n'existe aucune trace du papier !
S'ajoutent les préoccupations usuelles pour l'un et l'autre - Delilah doit renflouer la trésorerie de son agence de rencontres au plus vite sous peine de banqueroute, tandis que Samson appréhende sa mise à pied (imminente) avec scandale à la clef car les habitants de Bruncliffe ignorent tout de ses déboires. Résultat, le duo piétine à force de cachotteries. Elle pressent qu'il n'est pas digne de confiance et lui veut la préserver pour ne plus qu'elle souffre comme avec son ex (qui la harcèle pour la garde du chien). Ça toupine, ça toupine... à tort ! Leur tandem est tellement plus efficace quand leur camaraderie est franche, spontanée et sans malentendu. Au diable les frissons amoureux... pas besoin !
Sinon c'est un troisième tome correct (on ne se fait pas de nœud au cerveau avec l'enquête en cours) et on passe un très bon moment dans le Yorkshire en attendant les prochains épisodes. L'épilogue est ouvert, la menace gronde pour Samson.

Finalement, 2 mois après le tome 2, j'ai décidé de revenir à cette saga cosy car je voulais retrouver les personnages.
On est sur un tome un peu mieux que le précédent, mais j'ai vu la solution à des kilomètres alors que ça n'a effleuré l'esprit de personne... et c'était d'une évidence !
Malgré tout, une enquête sympa avec les 2 protagonistes. Je suis toujours "agacée" (même si le mot est un peu fort) par les non-dits entre eux. Ils se cachent mutuellement des choses et pour moi, la communication est la base de toute relation saine... autant dire que la leur ne l'est pas du tout.
Mais je dois être sadique, je veux retourner à Bruncliffe alors j'enchaîne avec le tome suivant, faute aussi au fait que je n'ai rien trouvé d'autre à écouter parmi mes souhaits ou envies.

"Voilà une série qui fait désormais partie de mes petits plaisirs anglais récurrents, au même titre qu'Agatha Raisin, et j'ai été ravie de me plonger déjà dans ce troisième tome."
Dites-nous en un peu plus sur son histoire...
"Samson et Delilah se voient confier par le notaire de Bruncliffe une mission un peu inhabituelle mais qui ne devrait pas être trop compliquée : retrouver le certificat de décès d'une jeune femme morte il y a des années. Pourtant, cette enquête pourrait mettre à jour bien des secrets et ça ne plaît pas à tout le monde..."
Mais que s'est-il exactement passé entre vous ?
"Pour l'essentiel, mon avis est assez similaire à ce que j'ai ressenti pour les romans précédents, je vais donc faire comme l'auteur, me répéter ! Les personnages sont attachants, et nous sommes facilement projetés nous-même dans cette petite ville pourtant pas toujours très accueillante. En revanche ici, certains personnages m'ont manquée, comme le filleul de Samson par exemple, et je reste extrêmement frustrée que certains points ne soient toujours pas éclaircis. Heureusement, l'humour omniprésent me fait un petit peu oublier cela. J'ai particulièrement apprécié l'enquête qui, pour le coup, est originale et nous renvoie dans le passé. Cela permet de ne pas nous replonger dans le schéma récurrent de la petite ville où, tout à coup, le taux de criminalité explose littéralement. En revanche, les détectives amateurs écartent certaines pistes bien vite et la résolution est un peu trop évidente."
Et comment cela s'est-il fini ?
"La fin des investigations est extrêmement émouvante. Pour le reste, on aime déjà trop ce duo pour ne pas se séparer d'eux à regret. Malgré tout, les intrigues secondaires et les révélations restent, à mon goût, beaucoup trop lentes et en lisant les dernières lignes, je me dis que le tome suivant risque de beaucoup m'énerver ! Wait and see..."

J’ai trop aimé. Avoir une intrigue autour d’un certificat de décès et du passé de bruncliffe, chercher à résoudre un mystère plutôt que de tenter de trouver un criminel a apporté un vrai vent de nouveauté.
J’aime trop Samson et Delilah et le fait que le mystère s’épaississe concernant l’intrigue de fond j’ai vraiment hâte d’avancer sur cette partie là mais surtout que nos deux zozios décident enfin à se rapprocher 👀
Même si l’intrigue m’a un chouïa moins embarquée, j’ai pris énormément de plaisir à la lecture (ou plutôt à l’écoute) et j’ai hâte de débuter le tome 4.
Mention spéciale pour les personnages secondaires de ce tome très touchants, et surtout Oscar qui m’a vraiment attendrie. Le petit plot twist de fin m’a fait vraiment plaisir 😌

J'ai préféré ce tome au deuxième ! J'ai été happée par l'intrigue, malgré le fait que j'avais déjà trouvé quelques indices, parce que je n'avais pas trouvé les raisons qui justifiaient des action commises. Une très très bonne lecture !
Par contre nos enquêteurs sont parfois longs à la détente !

Franchement y a pas à dire, les détectives du yorkshire est gentiment en train de devenir l’une de mes sagas préférées.
J’aime les personnages, la dynamique de leur petite ville, les intrigues, les mystères.

Un tome très plaisant que j'ai dévoré. J'aime beaucoup Samson et ses interactions avec Delilah. J'ai beaucoup apprécié l'enquête également et son dénouement.

Several things annoyed me about the book:
1. It was so obvious what the mystery was and when the characters were shocked at the reveal I rolled my eyes. I could tell the twist from the blurb. A bit more work on some twists and turns and maybe making it a bit less obvious to someone who had watched/read any murder mystery/whodunnit in the last 100 years.
2. We are in book 3 but Samson's backstory is still being drip-fed. And I mean drip-fed. We still have next to no idea what happened to him. The story is progressing soooooo slowly. Approximately how many books are we going to have to wade through before anything - and I mean literally anything - progresses?
3. The constant repetition. We get Samson and Delilah's backstory explained to us at the start of each chapter. I basically started skipping the first few pages of each chapter because it was so much repeated backstory (and it's not like the backstory was progressing so it was the same stuff every time). "Samson came home grrr he was a naughty boy! Basic Bitch Delilah (I mean, come on, she really is) got angsty and hypocritical..." repeat until we all die of old age...
4. This is personal but I find the 'interfering and everyone knows everyone' small town trope so overdone and it makes my teeth grind. This isn't a fault with the book, but it's another reason I didn't like it.

Another easy, pleasant enough read in the "Dales Detective" series but nothing to get excited about. The characters could be out of any rom-com & are obviously destined to be together, though how many books it will take them is anyone's guess! The mystery of the missing death certificate is an interesting one but the overall story was so predictable, there's no twists or surprises here - except maybe how on earth did it manage to spin itself out over 430+ pages?
Yes it's a longish read & as it falls firmly into cosy mystery territory this makes it, in my opinion anyway, far too long for this genre (though I guess I have to give the author some credit that it didn't make me feel like I was reading a lot of unnecessary padding!) Nothing else to say about it really other than it was a nice read with likeable characters.
It's the second I've read in this series but will it be the last? Well, I'm quite intrigued as to how Samson's career/suspension/court case is going to go but I won't be on the hunt for further books ...although if I happen on one I'll no doubt read it ;o)

Date with Mystery (Book 3 in "The Dales Detective" series) offers the reader an easy, witty “cozy” mystery set in the countryside of the Yorkshire Dales and in the small town of Bruncliffe.
In this instalment Samson and Delilah unite again try to find out what happened to a young Bruncliffe woman over twenty years ago and they uncover some nasty secrets about a dysfunctional family along the way.
The story is nicely plotted with buried skeletons coming to light, Delilah’s former husband causing a problem and Samson’s past is inevitable catching up with him.
The book can easily be read as a stand-alone and although I guessed the solution to the mystery well before the end, it was still entertaining to see how it played out between the (main and extended) characters in the novel.
This is a fun, light read and the final pages tantalise so, if you have come to like these characters, you will want to read the next in the series.

Terrific! I wish I could write like Ms Chapman. This was another charming, funny and well-done mystery in Bruncliffe. Looking forward to much more as I whizz on to the latest one. Intrigued to see how things turn out for Samson & Delilah, both professionally and personally, and am hoping against hope that sneaky Rick Proctor gets his comeuppance. In a very O'Brien way.

The Plot:Date with Mystery is a series of plots. The central mystery is the search for a missing death cert. And around it Chapman is building the suspense of Samson's departure from the Met Police; the intrigue around Proctor Development business dealings, Proctor is the village's golden boy and the machinations of Delilah's ex-husband.
The Protagonists: Samson is ex-undercover Met Police. He left Bruncliffe under a cloud and returns in disgrace. He is brash, broody and handsome. Delilah is a hearty Yorkshire lass, the only girl in a family of manly men. Delilah has two businesses sadly neither is making a profit as yet.
I was excited when I read that book three in this series was available and promptly bought it. It does not disappoint. The mystery is captivating. There are layers to the puzzle, and they are not all visible.
The sweetness of this series is the cast of characters. D&S are delightful. The contrast between them makes the story more engaging. I love how they pretend their businesses are thriving but are always available to accompany the other. And their simmering romance is the right blend of adult angst to sweeten the story.
The village setting provides a smorgasbord of characters, and Chapman writes like the village gossip. So, there is drama and humour all the way through. And the characters feel real so you can't help but buy into them. I did feel cheated that the book ended without me knowing whether farmer Clive got a wife!
The Dales Detective Series takes place in the Yorkshire Dales, and the snow scenes are beautiful. You too will want it to snow. There is also a lovely contrast between the rolling hills and the harsh grey quarry.
Date with Mystery is the best definition of a cosy. Readers of Agatha Christie and Robert Thorogood should be right at home.
My second excellent read of 2018. And I think I’m going to read it again.

4,5 C’était génial. Une cold case pour notre duo si charismatique Samson et Delilah. Super ! Un testament doit être retrouvé, mais rien ne se passe comme prévu et le duo plonge dans de vieux secrets et terribles drames. A côté de l’enquête, Delilah craint de perdre Calimero et Samson sent approcher le moment où tout le monde apprendra ce qu’il a commis quand il était agent infiltré. La cold case était intéressante, prenante, ce genre d’histoires tourne souvent dans un sens que je connais très bien alors le vrai plaisir était de découvrir comment l’autrice déroulerait son fil et comment Samson et Delilah découvriraient ce que j’avais deviné. J’ai adoré, impossible de lâcher le livre et quand la fin approchait, j’ai vite réservé le tome suivant à la bibliothèque. Je ne veux pas quitter Bruncliffe. Il y a l’intrigue du tome et les intrigues de fond de la série, il y a les personnages qui sont toujours plus attachants et le décor, l’hiver dans les vallons du Yorkshire. J’adore cette série de cosy mystery.

C’était agréable de retourné dans les vallons avec Samson, Delilah et Calimero. Un trio tellement drôle et réconfortant.
Meme si j’avais compris ce qu’il en était du mystère j’ai apprécié suivre les péripéties. Le fait qu’il y ait la suspension de Samson en fil conducteur me donne envie de savoir ce qu’il va arriver, plus que la romance qui va à coup sure se concrétiser.

Quel régal, mais quel régal !
Encore un savant mélange d’ambiances qui m’a tenue en haleine. Entre enquête noire et humour, on ne s’ennuie pas bien que j’avais deviné le plus gros du dénouement, la dernière pièce du puzzle m’a quand même mise sur les fesses.
Le trio fonctionne à merveille et la suite promet un feu d’artifice de révélations et de mains sur les hanches, aye 🙌🏼

Please.
It was written in 2018. Don't tell me that Facebook was still a thing. I refuse to think that the Yorkshire is so remote that they still use it.
I call it now, Ida's cousin will marry the stinky farmer.
I don't know what I'm doing with these books. I don't love it. I don't hate it. But it's the third one I read in a row.
I think I'm not challenging myself enough.
