Remembrance And Reflection: The Birmingham Pub Bombings

Rate this book
The evening of Thursday November 21st 1974 began as any other in the run-up to Christmas. There was late night shopping in Birmingham and for many it was the weekly ‘pay day’. The city centre was bustling.

Then everything changed when bombs exploded in two packed city centre pubs, the Mulberry Bush and the Tavern in the Town. Twenty one people died and over 200 were injured.

Over half a century later the ripples from this horrific event, England’s biggest unsolved mass murder of the twentieth century, are still felt in the city.

Although the Provisional IRA is widely believed to have carried out the bombings, the real perpetrators still haven’t been held to account for their crimes, leaving a deep sense of injustice. Six men accused and convicted of planting the bombs had their convictions overturned after spending over 16 years in prison.

Here survivors, bereaved families, members of the local Irish community who suffered a backlash at the time, trauma experts and others impacted by the bombings share their moving stories.

An important piece of Birmingham’s history that should never be forgotten.
