In the land of promise, can two lives fulfill one legacy with love?
1891. Lenna Adler—destitute but not desperate—becomes the prize bride in a drunken poker game to one of Chicago’s lecherous men, a man who will stop at nothing to collect what he’s owed. In a hastened escape, Lenna boards the Atchison, Topeka, and Sante Fe Railway to Verona, Kansas determined to carry out her parents’ dream, with or without God’s help. The reputation at the Elton Hotel and the small town provide safety and peace for Lenna at last, not to mention a budding fancy with an honest cowboy.Lee Ellis has ranched the Flint Hills since he was a boy. The rolling landscape dotted with cattle is his paradise. All that’s left is finding someone to share it with, and he’s sure God’s brought her on the noon train. But when forced to confront a past he’d rather forget, his character and trust with his newfound love, Lenna, are at stake. Will she be able to lean on her recently awakened faith and forgive his family’s history, believing the man he is...or will she soon be on the next train out of town?
Taryn Oakley was born and raised in Kansas. She has dreamed of writing her own novel since elementary school. Now, she is an elementary school teacher near her hometown, where she lives with her husband and children. Through her stories, she hopes to bring the joy of Jesus' life-changing power to her readers.
“When life goes wrong, you must look for the good, mein liebling. Look for God’s handiwork.”
This is a richly woven story of tenacity and love. It’s full of depth, emotion, and unforgettable characters who display the resilience of the human spirit.
Oakley invites readers to step into Kansas 1891, where she introduces us to her tenacious heroine, Lenna Alder. Despite her personal struggles, Lenna is determined to chase her dream - even when it means she needs to forgive to achieve it. I was with her as she waited for God to put all the details in place and show her that He had a perfect plan. Lenna had every right to be loud and confrontational, but she chose to be unwavering and focused. Her integrity and courage allowed her to push past fear and stand up for what was right.
I enjoyed Lee Ellis as the hero, too. Confronting his past wasn’t easy and it tested not only his faith, but also that of Lenna. They find themselves in a ‘valley’ where secrets from their past surround them and giving up is an easy option. I liked that it became a testing ground and allowed them to learn to appreciate the good and God’s plan. I loved that they understood that “often the answers we want aren’t what we get” and that “they will be what we need.”
This is an engaging story about living in the land of promise and fulfilling a legacy.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligaiton to provide a review.
This is an excellent book filled with suspense, intrigue and a tender love story! Each page brought something new and exciting.
Lenna is AMAZING! She is courageous, loyal, loving and compassionate. Her life has been difficult but she has a chance at a new future. Lee is 😍! He loves God, his family and his ranch! Not being in the spotlight is his favorite place to be. As their friendship grows, they realize that they have a lot in common. Lee's patience and compassion help Lenna make peace with her past.
My favorite quote is : "In all the years of fighting God on His plan, He had been faithful in guiding her to this moment, and would continue for many moments to come. He'd never abandoned her. His promise to bring forth new things was true."
Joining Lenna Addler in her escape to a better life, I appreciate that I had a front-row seat to her bravery and determination to follow her parents’ legacy. The sprinkles of German were a reminder that her family sacrificed so much in order for her to experience the American dream. As a result, it was easy to admire her persistence in mastering her work at the Elton Hotel while navigating challenging relationships. Having her encounter Lee Ellis—an earnest man shrouded in mystery yet desiring to do what is right—was a delight as it was evident that they both helped each other walk in integrity before God.
In reading the author's notes, I enjoyed learning more about the meticulous standards of hotel waitstaff and how hard Leena worked to serve others. Although she encountered hardships, loss, and threats, her attitude was refreshing as she and Lee worked through issues of trust and forgiveness. Coupled with powerful sermons at church, this book was a reminder that God does not have us walk through the darkness alone. If you enjoy reading about the hospitality industry, especially in late 19th century America, this sweet romance balances the toil of pioneer life with the joy of God's ultimate provision.
“God was watching out for you. All this time. He knew where to send you.” His lips pulled back gently. “I’m glad it was to me.”
This wonderful book by a new to me author was such a delight to read. It was packed with faith and history and had a little danger and mystery. All with amazing characters that you just can’t help but love and root for.
Lenna is brave and determined. I loved that she went after what she wanted and did everything she could to fulfill her father’s dream. I loved her journey back to faith and discovering the life-changing power of Jesus. I loved her friendships with Marty and Nora. I also loved how Marty helped her to see where her thinking may have gone astray. I loved that she wasn’t afraid to admit that she was wrong and accepted Lee for himself in the end. Lee is gentle and patient. I enjoyed his banter and fun with Benjamin. I loved his pride in his land and what his family had built but that he was humble and kept to himself. I loved that he accepted his attraction to Lenna and started getting to know her right away. I loved their friendship and the sweet romance they found. I loved how important his faith was to him and that he was always encouraging Lenna to see that God had a plan for her life, that every step led her to where she was supposed to be. Lenna and Lee faced some twists and trials but they found a beautiful happily ever after.
Another quote: “This problem isn’t resolvable.” “Sure it is. Unless your plan is to live out your days without him.”
This book was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
This is such a sweet and heartfelt story, one I thoroughly enjoyed.
I loved Lee and Lenna’s relationship. It was steady and gentle, but not without some struggles. There were misunderstandings, unspoken fears, and pieces of the past that shaped their journey and influenced the choices they made.
And as much as I adored their story, I also loved the friendships woven throughout this book. Our friends are often the ones who help us see clearly when our hearts are struggling, and that truth is present throughout the story.
One of the main reasons I read faith-filled books is because they reflect biblical truth in a way that connects with everyday life, and this one did that beautifully.
Set on the Kansas plains, this is a tender story of love, resilience, and finding where you belong. Definitely one I’d recommend.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and share your book.
I just finished Home on the Range and really enjoyed it! Such a sweet, heartfelt love story. Lenna is the perfect mix of gentle and strong—I loved her from the start—and I think I fell for Lee almost immediately. Their story felt real and tender, and I loved how faith and forgiveness were woven through it in such a natural way.
It’s a wholesome read with small-town charm, a bit of adventure, and plenty of heart. If you enjoy historical romance with a message of hope and redemption, you’ll love this one.
4 ⭐️ This is such a sweet, Western historical fiction! When Lenna finds herself in danger in Chicago, she flees to the dream out West that her parents shared with her before their death. Difficult life circumstances have made Lenna angry and bitter at God for abandoning her. She can’t understand how her parents trusted God when He had seemingly abandoned them time and time again. This novel beautifully explores the question: is God good and loving even when life circumstances and even other people aren’t? I loved the beautiful faith themes and use of Bible verses throughout this book. It felt genuine and real, not forced for a plot point. The romance between Lenna and Lee was sweet. He was a true knight in shining armor several times throughout the book. The city of Verona and Lee’s ranch made such a beautiful setting filled with unique characters who all added their unique quirks, humor, and perspective. There were some plot twists I didn’t see coming, and I was excited to see how they would work out in the plot. Overall, a very sweet book that was well-plotted and interesting. No bad language; sweet kisses only romance. If you enjoy historical fiction or cowboy novels, I definitely recommend this one. Thank you to @tarynoakleyauthor for providing me with a copy of your book to read and review. This is my own honest opinion of the book.
Set on the Kansas prairies in the late 1890’s, Home on the Range is a sweet read by Taryn Oakley.
I appreciated that it was squeaky clean (no spice, language, or gore), that it was well-researched, and that the characters grew in their faith as the story unfolded. I particularly identified with Lenna’s struggle to believe in God’s goodness when viewed through her circumstances.
There was a plot twist near the end that I truly didn’t expect, which made things more interesting! And fun for me was the use of familiar German words and that the MMC and my husband are both named Lee 😊
(Thank you to the author for the ebook! All opinions expressed are my own).
New-to-me author alert! I love finding new Christian authors to read and recommend! Taryn’s book was well written, faith filled, with a sweet romance and a side of danger and suspense. Home on the Range shows how we should always trust God’s plan, even when the way is fraught with heartache and disappointment. All things work for His good and in His time.

You may be surprised to learn that this romance does not include kisses, yet the story is so well told—their relationship and challenges so well developed—that it does not feel missing.
With a strong opening chapter, the story immediately grabbed my attention. We meet Lenna in a precarious position. Her loss and the danger she faces instantly creates the feeling of needing to know what happens next.
The story does feel quieter at one point, but in a way that you just know something is going to happen. The suspense elements are layered, which makes for an interesting read.
This book is clearly well researched, bringing to mind the feel of a classic novel, but the Faith themes are the heart of this story as they take a look at accountability and trust in the Lord in the midst of heartbreak.
In conclusion, the title brings together everything that I really liked about this one!
I really connected with the themes of forgiveness, trust, and second chances. Lee’s struggle with his past felt genuine, and the slow-building relationship added depth. This book left me thoughtful and surprisingly moved.
Very well written. I loved the time-period and location of the story. The characters were very relatable. I was drawn into the storyline and couldn’t put it down!
I don't typically go for westerns but I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I'm so glad I did! It helped that it was a romance too.
Taryn Oakley's, Home on the Range was great. I liked how she based the town and hotel off of actual places. That made it more real in my mind.
A young lady is running away from something and trying to follow the path her parents wanted for her. She lands in a small town and meets a tall, cute stranger, who happens to own a ranch a little ways out of town. They start to spend time with each other and soon fall for each other. But soon, both of their past comes back. Can their love for each other and faith in God be enough?
I loved watching Lenna find her faith as she steps out into a new place. I like how Taryn incorporated the theme of trust and hope.
If you like these tropes; - romance - small town - cowboys - clean Christian romance I suggest you pick up Home on the Range.
This was a new author for me and I couldn't resist a book with cowboys set in Kansas. Lenna boards a train to escape Chicago and heads to the place her deceased parents had always dreamed she would visit. She gets hired as a waitress at the local hotel by a rigid matron who isn't exactly thrilled about it. But there's a handsome cowboy named Lee who's caught her eye. His family name carries weight in town, and not always for the best reasons.
What really drew me in was watching these two navigate their budding courtship while dealing with secrets from the past. I appreciated the character development and found the dialogue believable. Each character felt unique and well developed. I wasn't prepared for how deep those past secrets went when they finally emerged. Both Lee and Lenna have things they need to confront, and watching that unfold in the second half kept me hooked until I finished the book. It's truly a journey of hope and trust for both of them.
The historical aspect was such a fun bonus. This Kansas town was a railroad stop where travelers would rush off the train for a quick meal at the hotel before boarding again to continue their journey. At the end of the book you learn the town and hotel were based on a real place, which made the whole story even more interesting. I loved this peek into that part of Kansas history combined with a sweet romance.
"Home on the Range" has something to offer for everyone - mystery, romance, action & adventure, humor, and hope. I enjoyed the rich and vivid imagery Taryn used throughout the story. Each character was brought to life as the plot continued naturally to build and develop. I am truly impressed and amazed by the amount of research and time Taryn put into crafting this beautiful novel of historical fiction.
Taryn Oakley’s Home on the Range is a heartfelt romance that blends sweeping Kansas landscapes with themes of resilience, faith, and the quest for belonging. Set in 1891, the novel follows Lenna Adler, a young woman who escapes a forced marriage in Chicago and heads to the open prairie of Kansas in search of a new life. What she finds instead is a rugged world of hard work, unexpected friendships, and the possibility of love, and redemption, in the most unlikely places.
Oakley’s strength definitely lies her descriptive writing—the rolling grasslands, dusty trails, and fledgling towns of the American Midwest which feel as vital as any character in the novel. The harshness of pioneer life is balanced by moments of quiet beauty: the golden hue of wheat fields at sunset, the cool hush of dawn before the workday begins, and the gentle reassurance of prayer before a difficult decision. Kansas is not just a backdrop but a crucible that shapes Lenna’s journey and those of the people she comes to care about.
Lenna is a compelling heroine because she embodies the contradictions of her era. She is determined and capable, yet still vulnerable after years of uncertainty and fear. When she first arrives on the range, she finds not only unfamiliar geography but unfamiliar expectations for what a woman should be. Over the course of the story, Lenna learns to trust her own strength and her ability to shape her destiny.
“I came here to find freedom, but what I found was the courage to become the woman I never knew I could be.”
The hero, Lee Ellis, is a rancher whose quiet strength, integrity, and deep love for the land set him apart. He has tended the Flint Hills since boyhood and carries an abiding faith that grounds his choices. In many ways, Lee is the story’s emotional anchor—steadfast, compassionate, and sure of his calling.
The romantic arc between Lenna and Lee is gentle and gradual, rooted not in instant infatuation but in mutual respect and shared struggles. Lee’s steady presence begins to chip away at Lenna’s fear, helping her to open her heart again and, perhaps more importantly, to reconsider her relationship with God.
Oakley’s integrates faith into the narrative without sermonizing. Unlike some historical romances where religious elements feel tacked on, here faith is woven into the fabric of daily life. Prayer, scripture, and shared worship become sources of comfort and moral guidance for characters facing doubt, loss, and longing.
The historical details—everything from chores on a ranch to the social expectations of the late 19th century—are woven in seamlessly, illustrating the author’s expansive research and attention to detail. However, at times I thought the story arc could benefit from increased tension that would help move the plot a bit faster.
Overall, this was a rewarding and uplifting read. One I’m sure fans of Christian historical fiction and character-driven romances will find enjoyable.
I was given a PDF copy of this novel by author. I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Tender Western Romance Rooted in Hope Star Rating: 5
In the land of promise, can two lives fulfill one legacy with love?
Set in 1891, Home on the Range by Taryn Oakley gives us a heroine who is strong in spirit even when her circumstances are anything but kind. Lenna Adler—destitute but far from desperate—finds herself unwillingly promised to a dangerous man after a drunken poker game in Chicago. Determined to protect her parents’ dream and her own future, she flees on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway to Verona, Kansas, unsure whether she’s running toward independence… or away from God.
What unfolds in the quiet safety of the Elton Hotel and the rolling Flint Hills is such a beautiful contrast to where her story began. The small-town setting feels peaceful and grounding, and the budding romance between Lenna and rancher Lee Ellis is steady, heartfelt, and deeply rooted in character. Lee has loved the land his whole life and believes God brought Lenna to him on that noon train—but when his family’s past resurfaces, both his integrity and their growing love are tested.
What I appreciated most was the emotional depth beneath the romance. This isn’t just about attraction—it’s about trust, forgiveness, and whether faith can truly anchor you when the past threatens your future. Lenna’s journey, especially her wrestling between self-reliance and surrender, felt honest and relatable.
The love story unfolds gently, with vulnerability and growth at its center. It’s swoony in that quiet, safe way—the kind that feels earned rather than rushed. And the ranch backdrop? Absolutely immersive. You can almost feel the wind across the Flint Hills.
If you love: 🤎 Historical Western romance 🤎 Clean, faith-threaded love stories 🤎 Strong heroines rebuilding their lives 🤎 Small-town safety + cowboy charm 🤎 Emotional growth and forgiveness arcs
Then this one is absolutely worth the ride.
A tender, hope-filled story about finding home—not just in a place, but in a person… and in God’s faithfulness. ✨
I had the privilege of receiving a copy from Taryn Oakley, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to experience this story and share my honest thoughts.
Taryn Oakley’s latest book is a historical fiction-a story about Lenna Adler and Lee Ellis. We follow Lenna as she escapes a terrible past and finds hope in a new place. The new beginning is marred by some elements in the past, that threaten to destroy her new found hope and love, but in the end everything works out for good. The book is very predictable in its outcome. It is clear from the page that Lee is introduced that Lenna and Lee will be a couple. It is a cozy read for wintry days like a Hallmark Christmas movie. The spiritual journey in Lenna’s and Lee’s life is very relatable. Lenna, who had lost faith after the incidences of the past, learns to trust God again. Lee, who is strong in his faith, is challenged by the circumstances that unfold. It was interesting that the settings and incidences that were described were well researched and gave a fairly accurate picture of life in the late 18th and early 19th century in Kansas. The book is a great gift for anyone who likes a nice slow paced historical romance.
Just when she is close to her HEA (happily ever after) Lenna Adler faces turn after turn of events leaving her perplexed and doubting God’s goodness. Filled with colorful characters, masterful descriptions, and intriguing story, the author’s smooth narrative placed this reader smack dab in the middle of the story as if sitting at the cinema. A great read that tackles several moral issues.
